Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Simon Stock, pray for us!⁣⠀ ⠀ Simon Stock founded many Carmelite Communities, especially in University towns such as Cambridge, Oxford, Paris, and Bologna, and he helped to change the Carmelites from a hermit Order to one of the mendicant friars. In 1254 he was elected Superior-General of his Order at London. Simon Stock's lasting fame came from an apparition he had in Cambridge, England, on July 16, 1251, at a time when the Carmelite Order was being oppressed. In it, the Virgin Mary appeared to him holding the brown scapular in one hand. Her words were: "Receive, my beloved son, this scapular of thy Order; it is the special sign of my favor, which I have obtained for thee and for thy children of Mount Carmel. He who dies clothed with this habit shall be preserved from eternal fire. It is the badge of salvation, a shield in time of danger, and a pledge of special peace and protection." The scapular (from the Latin, scapula, meaning "shoulder blade") consists of two pieces of cloth, one worn on the chest, and the other on the back, which was connected by straps or strings passing over the shoulders. In certain Orders, monks and nuns wear scapulars that reach from the shoulders almost to the ground as outer garments. Laypersons usually wear scapulars underneath their clothing; these consist of two pieces of material only a few inches square. There are elaborate rules governing the wearing of the scapular: although it may be worn by any Catholic, even an infant, the investiture must be done by a priest. And the scapular must be worn in the proper manner; if an individual neglects to wear it for a time, the benefits are forfeited. The Catholic Church has approved eighteen different kinds of scapulars of which the best known is the woolen brown scapular, or the Scapular of Mount Carmel, that the Virgin Mary bestowed on Simon Stock. His feast day is May 16th.⠀ ⠀ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #mass ⁣www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CAQsX5lDBuk/?igshid=1g231wtm63tk1

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Isidore the Farmer, pray for us!⁣⠀ Isidore has become the patron of farmers and rural communities. In particular, he is the patron of Madrid, Spain, and of the United States National Rural Life Conference. When he was barely old enough to wield a hoe, Isidore entered the service of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from Madrid, and worked faithfully on his estate outside the city for the rest of his life. He married a young woman as simple and upright as himself who also became a saint—Maria de la Cabeza. They had one son, who died as a child. Isidore had deep religious instincts. He rose early in the morning to go to church and spent many a holiday devoutly visiting the churches of Madrid and surrounding areas. All day long, as he walked behind the plow, he communed with God. His devotion, one might say, became a problem, for his fellow workers sometimes complained that he often showed up late because of lingering in church too long. He was known for his love of the poor, and there are accounts of Isidore’s supplying them miraculously with food. He had a great concern for the proper treatment of animals. He died May 15, 1130, and was declared a saint in 1622, with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri. Together, the group is known in Spain as “the five saints.” ⁣⁣⠀ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #religious #latinmass ⁣www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CAN6gnUj5TK/?igshid=1smvwcz6y25n3

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Epiphanius of Salamis, pray for us! The "Oracle of Palestine' the bishop of Constantia, Salamis, Cyprus. He was born in Besanduk, Palestine, in 315, and he became an expert in scriptural languages. He spent time as a monk and as a hermit. In 333, he was ordained and made the abbot of a monastery at Eleutheropolis. He became the bishop of Cyprus in 367, a foe of the Arians. After a series of disputes, Epiphanius concentrated on writing. He was an authority on Mary and taught the primacy of Peter among the Apostles. He is considered an outstanding Church defender. Epiphanius of Salamis was the bishop of Salamis, Cyprus at the end of the 4th century. He is considered a saint and a Church Father by both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. He gained a reputation as a strong defender of orthodoxy. He is best known for composing the Panarion, a very large compendium of the heresies up to his own time, full of quotations that are often the only surviving fragments of suppressed texts. According to Ernst Kitzinger, he "seems to have been the first cleric to have taken up the matter of Christian religious images as a major issue", and there has been much controversy over how many of the quotations attributed to him by the Byzantine Iconoclasts were actually by him. Regardless of this he was clearly strongly against some contemporary uses of images in the church. #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CAFut-sjVLe/?igshid=xu1x2qu22alk

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Damien of Molokai, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ When Joseph de Veuster was born in Tremelo, Belgium, in 1840, few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy, Hansen’s disease. By the time he died at the age of 49, people all over the world knew about this disease because of him. They knew that human compassion could soften the ravages of this disease. Forced to quit school at age 13 to work on the family farm, Joseph entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary six years later, taking the name of a fourth-century physician and martyr. When his brother Pamphile, a priest in the same congregation, fell ill and was unable to go to the Hawaiian Islands as assigned, Damien quickly volunteered in his place. In May 1864, two months after arriving in his new mission, Damien was ordained a priest in Honolulu and assigned to the island of Hawaii. Damien soon volunteered to remain permanently, caring for the people’s physical, medical, and spiritual needs. In time, he became their most effective advocate to obtain promised government support. Soon the settlement had new houses and a new church, school, an orphanage. Morale improved considerably. A few years later, he succeeded in getting the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by Mother Marianne Cope, to help staff this colony in Kalaupapa. Damien contracted Hansen’s disease and died of its complications. As requested, he was buried in Kalaupapa, but in 1936 the Belgian government succeeded in having his body moved to Belgium. Part of Damien’s body was returned to his beloved Hawaiian brothers and sisters after his beatification in 1995. When Hawaii became a state in 1959, it selected Damien as one of its two representatives in the Statuary Hall at the US Capitol. Damien was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2009. #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism https://www.instagram.com/p/CABTeNQjjJi/?igshid=17gnhk5oh1uf9

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Pachomius the Great, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ St. Pachomius was born about 292 in the Upper Thebaid in Egypt and was inducted into the Emperor's army as a twenty-year-old. The great kindness of Christians at Thebes toward the soldiers became embedded in his mind and led to his conversion after his discharge. After being baptized, he became a disciple of an anchorite, Palemon, and took the habit. The two of them led a life of extreme austerity and total dedication to God; they combined manual labor with unceasing prayer both day and night. Later, Pachomius felt called to build a monastery on the banks of the Nile at Tabennisi; so about 318 Palemon helped him build a cell there and even remained with him for a while. In a short time, one hundred monks joined him and Pachomius organized them on principles of community living. So prevalent did the desire to emulate the life of Pachomius and his monks become, that the holy man was obliged to establish ten other monasteries for men and two nunneries for women. Before his death in 346, there were seven thousand monks in his houses, and his Order lasted in the East until the 11th century. St. Pachomius was the first monk to organize hermits into groups and write down a Rule for them. Both St. Basil and St. Benedict drew from his Rule in setting forth their own more famous ones. Hence, though St. Anthony is usually regarded as the founder of Christian monasticism, it was really St. Pachomius who began monasticism as we know it today. #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_-DMfgjfoL/?igshid=7xudffezdniu

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Peter of Tarentaise, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ There are two men named Saint Peter of Tarentaise who lived one century apart. The man we honor today is the younger Peter, born in France in the early part of the 12th century. The other man with the same name became Pope Innocent the Fifth. The Peter we’re focusing on today became a Cistercian monk and eventually served as abbot. In 1142, he was named archbishop of Tarentaise, replacing a bishop who had been deposed because of corruption. Peter tackled his new assignment with vigor. He brought reform into his diocese, replaced lax clergy, and reached out to the poor. He visited all parts of his mountainous diocese on a regular basis. After about a decade as bishop, Peter “disappeared” for a year and lived quietly as a lay brother at an abbey in Switzerland. When he was found out, the reluctant bishop was persuaded to return to his post. He again focused many of his energies on the poor. Peter died in 1175 on his way home from an unsuccessful papal assignment to reconcile the kings of France and England. ⁣ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_7j0eQjZ0m/?igshid=1ram6cpoxdlt7

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Dominic Savio, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic Savio, the patron of choirboys. Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined Saint John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed Don Bosco with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic, would, in 1859, join Don Bosco in the beginnings of his Salesian congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven. As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he called “my distractions.” Even in play, he said that at times, “It seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do something that will make the other boys laugh.” Dominic would say, “I can’t do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God.” Dominic’s health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last Sacraments. Saint John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life. Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. Saint Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954. ⁣ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_3RBJPD5p_/?igshid=hkd7newsowz6

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Florian, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ The St. Florian commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on May 4th, was an officer of the Roman army, who occupied a high administrative post in Noricum, now part of Austria, and who suffered death for the Faith in the days of Diocletian. His legendary "Acts" state that he gave himself up at Lorch to the soldiers of Aquilinus, the governor, when they were rounding up the Christians, and after making a bold confession, he was twice scourged, half-flayed alive, set on fire, and finally thrown into the river Enns with a stone around his neck. His body, recovered and buried by a pious woman, was eventually removed to the Augustinian Abbey of St. Florian, near Linz. It is said to have been at a later date translated to Rome, and Pope Lucius III, in 1138, gave some of the saint's relics to King Casimir of Poland and to the Bishop of Cracow. Since that time, St. Florian has been regarded as a patron of Poland as well as of Linz, Upper Austria and of firemen. There has been popular devotion to St. Florian in many parts of central Europe, and the tradition as to his martyrdom, not far from the spot where the Enns flows into the Danube, is ancient and reliable. Many miracles of healing are attributed to his intercession and he is invoked as a powerful protector in danger from fire or water. His feast day is May 4th.⁣ ⁣ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_xb5lVju2e/?igshid=15yypxpz8mypu

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - SS. Philip and James, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and, of course, the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, “brother” of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater.⁣ ⁣ Philip: Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (Jn 1:45).⁣ ⁣ Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to realize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip where they should buy bread for the people to eat. Saint John comments, “[Jesus] said this to test him because he himself knew what he was going to do” (Jn 6:6). Philip answered, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (Jn 6:7).⁣ ⁣ On another occasion, we can almost hear the exasperation in Jesus’s voice. After Thomas had complained that they did not know where Jesus was going, Jesus said, “I am the way. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (Jn 14:6a, 7). Then Philip said, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us” (Jn 14:8). Enough! Jesus answered, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (Jn 14:9a).⁣ ⁣ ⁣#catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_ueNe2jclI/?igshid=1jwlhrtfqq7ht

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Athanasius, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an outspoken critic of a new movement growing in the East—Arianism.⁣ ⁣ When Athanasius assumed his role as bishop of Alexandria, he continued the fight against Arianism. At first, it seemed that the battle would be easily won and that Arianism would be condemned. Such, however, did not prove to be the case. The Council of Tyre was called and for several reasons that are still unclear, Emperor Constantine exiled Athanasius to northern Gaul. This was to be the first in a series of travels and exiles reminiscent of the life of Saint Paul.⁣ ⁣ After Constantine died, his son restored Athanasius as bishop. This lasted only a year, however, for he was deposed once again by a coalition of Arian bishops. Athanasius took his case to Rome, and Pope Julius I called a synod to review the case and other related matters.⁣ ⁣ Five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity. During one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peace—reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal to which he was greatly devoted. His dogmatic and historical writings are almost all polemic, directed against every aspect of Arianism.⁣ ⁣ Among his ascetical writings, his Life of St. Anthony achieved astonishing popularity and contributed greatly to the establishment of monastic life throughout the Western Christian world.⁣ ⁣ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_r_1tLD750/?igshid=193vdhhf7dmhp

Reposted from @churchmilitantcom Today's saint - St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!⁣ ⁣ Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in 1955. This feast extends the long relationship between Joseph and the cause of workers in both Catholic faith and devotion. Beginning in the Book of Genesis, the dignity of human work has long been celebrated as a participation in the creative work of God. By work, humankind both fulfills the command found in Genesis to care for the earth (Gn 2:15) and to be productive in their labors. Saint Joseph, the carpenter and foster father of Jesus, is but one example of the holiness of human labor.⁣ ⁣ Jesus, too, was a carpenter. He learned the trade from Saint Joseph and spent his early adult years working side-by-side in Joseph’s carpentry shop before leaving to pursue his ministry as preacher and healer. In his encyclical Laborem Exercens, Pope John Paul II stated: “the Church considers it her task always to call attention to the dignity and rights of those who work, to condemn situations in which that dignity and those rights are violated, and to help to guide [social] changes so as to ensure authentic progress by man and society.”⁣ ⁣ Saint Joseph is held up as a model of such work. Pius XII emphasized this when he said, “The spirit flows to you and to all men from the heart of the God-man, Savior of the world, but certainly, no worker was ever more completely and profoundly penetrated by it than the foster father of Jesus, who lived with Him in closest intimacy and community of family life and work.”⁣ ⁣ #catholic #catholics #catholicfaith #catholicsaint #catholicsaints #todayssaint #saintoftheday #romancatholic #romancatholics #romancatholicsaint #romancatholicsaints #catholicsaintoftheday #religious #latinmass #mass #fssp #church #catholictradition #traditions #tridentinemass #jesus #christ #feastday #catholicism www.churchmilitant.com⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/B_pYJHzDuAh/?igshid=my8elijiool6
