If you're lamenting the fact that you used to be able to shoot through a 500-page novel in like a day when you were in middle school and now you can't, it's worth bearing in mind that a big part of that is because when you were in middle school, your reading comprehension sucked. Yes, mental health and the stresses of adult life can definitely be factors, but it's also the case that reading is typically more effortful as an adult because you've learned to Ponder The Implications. The material isn't just skimming over the surface of your brain anymore, and some of the spoons you used to spend on maximising your daily page count are now spent on actually thinking about what you're reading!

i know labels are not something that one can just stop worrying about whenever they want to (i too struggle with this. quite a lot, actually) but i feel like this, in particular, is not a label worth worrying about?

like... at its core, whether you are or aren't a lolicon has no bearing on how you interact with real people — it's just a label about whether you enjoy a certain variety of fiction. and it's also not a label you're obligated to use, if you don't want to!

have you ever found the descriptions and discussions you hear of a creative work to be more interesting or enjoyable than engaging directly with the work itself?

not that i can think of! there are occasions where discussion becomes as enjoyable as engaging with said work, but it's pretty rare?

one that comes to mind in that realm of things is homestuck, actually — talking with my now-wife about it and various fucked up aus was honestly a big contributor to us getting together. which i think says a lot about both of us.

homestuck has also contributed to... god, i think all but my very first relationship, which is kind of hilarious because that first one is also the only one without an amicable breakup. god.

(speaking of wife, yesterday actually made 12 years of being together! yay!

the whole premise of a fated and inevitable and unchangeable soulmate has so much potential for horror and i just find them so. fucking boring. when they're played entirely straight, without tapping into how incredibly fucked up it probably would be to actually exist in one of them.
