There are multiple slugcat species, and the slugcats we play give us a glimpse into the lives of each.
Survivor, Monk, and Gourmand are all part of the same species. All of them could eat larger meat but Gourmand was the only one strong enough to bite through critters w/o tool use. Survivor and Monk didn't want to spend too much time when they could be moving while they were on their journeys to find each other so they just decided not to cut any meat.
Hunter and Artificer are also part of the same species, whose primary diet is obviously large prey. Artificer's ancestors gained a symbiotic relationship with a type of bacteria and it passed down to them. It did to their own kids too, but y'know...
Rivulet is part of an amphibious species. They can breathe underwater unlike in the game because why not. They're similar to Surv and Monk in the way they could eat larger stuff if they cut it but they just don't because of time.
Saint is part of a more arboreal species. They don't eat meat of any kind, big or small, due to religious reasons (I'm the same person who sent that one ask a while ago lol). Their frail ass probably couldn't cut any out even if they wanted to. They do eat things that haven't hatched yet however like blue fruit (bug pupas), and eggbug eggs.
Spearmaster is obvs engineered, so they aren't part of any one species. I think their base species was Survivor's though considering their smallness.
I'll wait til Watcher comes out to add them to any species!!

Every slugcat has short fur and a thin layer of mucus, except for the Saint who is just many layers of fur and the Rivulet whose more blubbery and is generally wet.

I think that, given enough time and patience, a scavenger or slugcat could learn how to read a pearl.

artificer meets hunter when they鈥檙e almost dead. the mission is done. they just need to rest now. barely lucid, they struggle to hold on.
artificer is a mother at heart.
she takes care of this young, sickly, scrawny thing. makes a den warm and cozy, gets the best food she can, makes their final moments loving and peaceful. she holds their hand as they pass away.
just鈥rti mothering hunter in their last moments.

Saint has multiple more abilities that they are capable of/can learn besides flying and ascension. I imagine after many multiple loops of going from waking up in Windswept Spires to the Rubicon event, they can learn to stop time, teleport, use telekinesis, and other things by merit of them being all echo-ey and stuff. It takes a hell of a lot more concentration to pull these things off than their base two abilities, but they're possible.

I Never actually play rain world (I just like the lore) so this might be inaccurate but I always thought in the cycle when you woke up after death it wasn鈥檛 a repeat of ur current life but a reincarnation into the next life?? And that the repeat was just a game mechanic. That鈥檚 why arti鈥檚 pups aren鈥檛 still alive they鈥檙e in the next one. Is this explicitly disproven anywhere or
we never get confirmation of how the cycle works [and frankly i just woke up from a terrifying 1 hour dream while writing this so excuse any mistakes], but i think its hinted you just reincarnate? common fanon seems to be multiple branching timelines - but i've also seen a theory that the deaths we have are just dreams we have. the post linked goes much more in-depth into it and i doubt i'm doing it any justice.

what I hc each scugs age to be, descending order, translated into human years. Will be at the time they are playable.
Saint - Very, very old. Has been alive since maybe even before Spearmaster鈥檚 time, dying and rebirthing and never being able to break the cycle. Never bothering. An Echo, A God, whatever you call it, this thing has lived long before you were here and will live long after. Nightcat/Watcher - We don鈥檛 know much about them yet, so this could change, but I鈥檒l put them here. They鈥檙e akin to an Echo, maybe blessed by those things, struggling to survive in the aching world they found themselves in, yet unable to die. Younger than Saint, most definitely, young enough to be it鈥檚 disciple. Maybe it鈥檚 shadow. Inv/Enot/Sofanthiel/???/Paincat/Gorbo - This thing defies age, or maybe even time itself. It could鈥檝e been born a second ago. Maybe it鈥檚 lived forever. They鈥檙e everything and nothing at the same time. - Artificer - A little older, definitely well into adulthood. There鈥檚 a few gray furs on her, mostly from stress, but that doesn鈥檛 mean age won鈥檛 cause more a few years down the line. Gourmand - Around the same, give or take a bit. Wise from experience, old enough to rear young. He鈥檚 probably nearing the age where he鈥檚 gonna go infertile, but it doesn鈥檛 really matter. He鈥檚 fathered several litters already and he still takes care of many pups in his colony, even if they aren鈥檛 his. Spearmaster - Just a tad younger than both Artificer and Gormand. 2-3 years, maybe? 5, at the most extreme. They probably have a shorter lifespan than most due to their heavily mutated/purposed body. They started adventuring early to take advantage of what time they have. - Rivulet - The wild card. On the younger side, maybe like 25-27 in human years? They still hold the energy of youth inside them, bright and bouncy and loud. Their body has yet to deteriorate with age. Hunter - unfortunately, their body is deteriorating even without age. They won鈥檛 live long. Around Rivulet鈥檚 age, but the opposite in demeanor - they were never afforded the energy of youth at all. - Survivor - one of the youngest, but not a kid by any means. A fairly fresh adult. They were ripped from their family before they became one, but that only means they鈥檝e learnt to be strong - very self sufficient for their age. Early twenties. Monk - the actual youngest. 18-20. Not too far behind Survivor in many means, though. Self sufficient as well, though to a lesser extent.

slugcats do have fur, but it's short and all slicked up with a cleaning agent they produce on their skin that picks up dirt and grime as they travel.
the reason why saint is able to be so fluffy is because their slugcat genome adapted to the cold (duh), stopping the overproduction of the cleaning agent, and growing a double coat.
this also means that Saint sheds.

hunter鈥檚 rot makes them sick but it also makes their body the consistency of a stretch armstrong. the more it progresses the more it feels that way until they finally perish from it

The inside of an Iterator sounds and feels almost like PHONK.
I just think it's funny, literally no grounds behind it, I'm just here to have fun, and Iterators being giant speakers for ancient phonk is funny as hell.

Note
hunter is stuck reliving the rot taking over their body due to the cyclical nature of life and death. they fight their sickness, yet never well enough.
maybe the tiniest bit of relief as they "die", but then again trying to control their limbs as the rot takes them over, consuming everything in its way with hunter powerless.
