An interesting radio documentary about women explorers. Including archeologist Anne Stine Ingstad, who excavated the Viking site at L'Anse aux Meadows and Mi'kmaw midwife Mary Webb.

Hi everyone!
For my final project in Anthropology, I’m doing research on the K-Pop fan community! As a part of my study, I’m conducting a general survey on experiences within it. I’m trying to get as many responses as I can right now, so please pass this along to others!

I don’t think a lot of people really understand that ecosystems in North America were purposefully maintained and altered by Native people.
Like, we used to purposefully set fires in order to clear underbrush in forests, and to inhibit the growth of trees on the prairies. This land hasn’t existed in some primeval state for thousands of years. What Europeans saw when they came here was the result of -work-

I think the only universal experience amongst archaeologists is that we have all, at least once, enjoyed digging a really nice hole and then gotten very sad when there was nothing in it.

I follow a lot of archeology blogs (my favorite is definitely @chaotic-archaeologist) because I literally cannot remember a time when archeology wasn’t my dream career. I grew up watching archeology documentaries with my grandma and vividly remember telling her that I wanted to do that someday. It’s something that I truly believe I was meant to do.
Unfortunately, my physical health has gotten to the point that I’m probably never going to work in my dream field. With the damage to the nerves near the lower part of my spinal cord, physical activity is dangerous for me. These days, I’m lucky to walk to my bathroom and back without going numb and being in extreme amounts of pain. And it hurts. Like, I didn’t know I could be this crushed by something before. I think about tiny Arsinoe who was so certain that she’d be an archeologist someday and my eyes fill with tears because she lost her dream. And yeah, writing is awesome. I love my books and the characters I create. But it can never compare to archeology.
I’ve known for a while that I wasn’t likely going to be able to work as an archaeologist, but I think the reality of it finally just hit me as I was reading a post from an archeology blog I like. Teeny Arsinoe who would read about archeology and dream about her future career and talk about it so much is devastated. And adult me is just as crushed. This is the one thing I have always known I wanted and having it taken away is... I’d compare it to losing a limb. I don’t know what the hell kind of happiness I’ll find in a career that will always come second best.
But also, thanks to the blogs like @chaotic-archaeologist and @archaeologysucks for at least just being brilliant blogs that give me all the archeology content my heart desires. We’ve never interacted but your blogs are amazing.

A human rights group at the University of Toronto is calling for a ban on tear gas as a riot control agent, arguing police often misuse the chemical weapon and that it can often harm peaceful protesters or innocent bystanders.
In a report released Thursday, the University of Toronto’s International Human Rights Program (IHRP) calls for all levels of government to issue legislation banning the use of tear gas, to destroy current stockpiles of the chemical weapon and to halt all imports, exports and manufacturing of it.
“It has an inherently indiscriminate effect and is really abused against peaceful assemblies and against vulnerable populations,” Vincent Wong, a research associate at the IHRP and co-author of the report, told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview.
[…]
In June, NDP MP Matthew Green began a petition to ban the use and manufacturing of tear gas in Canada, which has since amassed more than 9,300 signatures. The deadline for signature is Sept. 8.

The Romans and Friends in Quarantine
Caesar: working from home, all day and night. Is trying to multi-task seven things at once. If the virus doesn't get him, overworking himself will
Antony: Is drunk 24/7 and bored out of his mind, starts many projects and finishes none of them, plays far too many video games, takes up twelve new hobbies that he subsequently forgets
Cleopatra: is discovering that she'll lose her mind if she's quarantined with Antony one more day, has a secret stash of wine that she drinks in the bath
Brutus: spends his time writing poetry that he later crumples up because he thinks it's all shit, lies awake at night haunted by every awkward thing he's ever said or done, cries in the shower
Pompey: gets drunk and tweets shit he thinks is profound at the time, complains constantly about having to wear a mask
Cassius: rearranges his entire house, organizes everything down to the sock drawers, orders way too much on Amazon
Octavian: argues on social media all the time, has a shelf full of books he's "definitely going to read next" but keeps buying more online instead

I’m an Indigenous archaeologist but I’m not very active on Tumblr anymore. There’s several of us over on Twitter but I’m not aware of anyone with a blog.
Do you have any recommendations for archaeology blogs run by Indigenous people? I haven't been able to find any, but I thought that you might know of one
Unfortunately I don't. But I do follow @finding-my-culture and I would encourage you to check them out.
