If you are an SEO professional like me, then you might have come across the terms- Impressions, Clicks, and Average Positions used in Google's Search Console. But what are they, exactly? And how do they affect our website's performance?
In this post, we will explain the basics of Impressions, clicks, and average positions and see how they can help you improve your website's performance.
What are Impressions, Clicks, & Average Positions?
Impressions, clicks, and average positions are the data provided in the performance report of Google's Search Console. Impressions, clicks, and average positions are calculated for the canonical URL of the link.
Impression: An impression is counted when a user has seen your site's link in the search results or news feed.
Click: A click is counted when a user clicks the link to your site.
Average Position: Average position is the relative position of the link of your site on Google. Positions are only calculated for Google.
When the clicks are divided by Impressions it results in a click-through rate (CTR).
What is The Importance of Impressions, Clicks, And Average Positions?
Impressions- Impressions are important because to visit a site, a user must first see the link of the site to click it. However, it is also necessary to remember that the quality of the impression is more important than the number of impressions.
Simply clicking on by users who are not interested in the content of the site is a negative marking for your website's ranking.
Clicks / Click-through-rate- Click-through-rate is important as if your website is ranking low on a search result page, but it is getting a high CTR, automatically indicating to Google that your content is what searchers are looking for.
Optimizing CTR can help in improving the organic ranking, which in turn will increase the number of clicks. An increase in the number of clicks means more traffic to your site.
Average Position- This metric shows the highest position a link to your website holds on Google's search results page. A link needs to make an impression to record its position.
The average position is impacted by many factors like device type, location, search history, etc. Any changes in the average position may indicate the algorithm change, query expansion, or seasonality. Therefore, tracking website analysis by analyzing average position may prove tricky.

Search engine marketing and types
Search engine marketing, or SEM, is defined as a digital marketing tactic in which business owners bid to display ads on various search engines or implement SEO to increase their websites’ reach and popularity. 
There are two ways by which search engine marketing is carried out. They are paid ads and SEO. 
1. Paid ads- These ads are displayed either at the top or right side and at the end of the search result page. Search engines like Google and Bing have advertising platforms called Google Ads and Bing Ads respectively. These advertising programs let advertisers bid for the keyword according to their budget to display their ads across the search engine. 
Paid ads work on a pay-per-click mechanism in which an advertiser is charged every time a user clicks the ad in search results. Display ads, search ads, and responsive ads are some examples of paid ads.
2. SEO- It is a process of increasing the visibility of a website in search results organically. Unlike paid ads, SEO is all about naturally optimizing a website, so that it gets visible for the given search query.
SEO is carried out by two methods, that is on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page optimization is optimizing processes within a website for crawling purposes, whereas off-page optimization is optimizing outside a website to improve the ranking.
