Sensex and Nifty Retreat After Scaling New Heights: A Market Update
In a day marked by historic highs and subsequent profit-taking, the Indian stock market witnessed a slight dip as both the Sensex and Nifty settled lower after hitting record peaks earlier in the session.
The BSE Sensex, comprising top 30 stocks, edged down by 58.80 points or 0.08 per cent to settle at 74,683.70. Earlier in the day, it had surged to an all-time high of 75,124.28, breaching the significant 75,000-mark for the first time ever. Similarly, the NSE Nifty saw a decline of 23.55 points or 0.10 per cent, closing at 22,642.75 after touching a fresh peak of 22,768.40.
The market saw profit-booking activities particularly in stocks like Titan, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, and others, which weighed on the indices. Conversely, companies like ICICI Bank, Infosys, and Bajaj Finserv contributed to the gains.
While Asian markets showed mixed trends, with Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong ending positively and Seoul closing lower, European markets traded mostly in the red. Wall Street had a mixed session the previous day.
The slight retreat in the Indian market was attributed to profit-booking at higher levels, with investors also eyeing the upcoming US inflation data which could impact future rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve. Recent better-than-expected US economic data has raised concerns about a potential change in rate cut expectations for the year.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were observed offloading equities worth Rs 684.68 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed slightly to USD 90.54 a barrel.
Despite today’s minor pullback, the overall sentiment remains positive, with the BSE benchmark settling at a new closing peak of 74,742.50 on Monday and the NSE Nifty also closing higher at 22,666.30.

The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has issued a warning, stating that a cold air mass from the northwest is set to collide with an existing cold front this Saturday, leading to a rapid decrease in temperatures across northern China. The impact will be most pronounced in the sparsely populated deserts and grasslands of northern Inner Mongolia, where temperatures are expected to plummet on Friday and continue to drop from Saturday onwards.
From next week onwards, many parts of the northeast are anticipated to witness maximum temperatures plummeting into single digits or even below freezing. This abrupt reversal from the recent “big warming” trend is unusual for this time of the year, even though freezing temperatures are common during the colder months.
This sudden weather change follows a period of unseasonably warm weather, with parts of northern China recording record high temperatures exceeding 30°C. However, as the seasons transition, the abrupt drop in temperature has taken many by surprise.
China has been experiencing an increase in extreme weather events in recent years, causing substantial damage to urban infrastructure and farmlands, leading to significant economic losses. The country has also been grappling with concerns about the pace and impact of global warming. This summer, China faced historic rainfall due to typhoons, causing severe flooding in regions unaccustomed to tropical storms.
In response to these challenges, authorities are planning to issue 1 trillion yuan ($137 billion) of sovereign bonds to rebuild areas affected by floods and enhance infrastructure to better cope with future disasters.
Additionally, the upcoming winter may bring its own surprises. A moderate El Niño, a natural climate pattern associated with the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, is expected. El Niño occurs every two to seven years and typically lasts for nine to 12 months. Jia Xiaolong, deputy director of China’s National Climate Centre, has cautioned that winter temperatures could fluctuate significantly during El Niño, despite the sea surface temperature in the east-central equatorial Pacific expected to exceed 0.5°C in November.

Nearly 200 Income Tax officials conducted simultaneous searches in Chennai, Thiruvannamalai, Karur, and Coimbatore. The properties targeted included residences, offices, and educational institutions associated with individuals linked to EV Velu.
This is not the first time that Income Tax officials have probed properties related to EV Velu. In 2021, during earlier searches, discrepancies were reportedly found in the operations of sand quarries.
EV Velu, a senior leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, currently serves as the Minister for Public Works in the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
The raids have drawn condemnation from the DMK, with party spokesperson Saravanan describing them as a response by the BJP-led Centre to counter the growing influence of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties.
