Happy Birthday to astronaut Deke Slayton, born on March 1, 1924 in Sparta, Wisconsin. After being selected as one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, he was grounded in 1962 before he could travel to space because of an atrial fibrilliation, an irregular heart rhythm. He then served as NASA’s Director of Flight Crew Operations for almost a decade from 1963 until 1972 when he was granted medical clearance to fly. At age 51, Slayton flew on the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission, becoming the oldest person to go to space at the time. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 69.

APOLLO 1 - JANUARY 27, 1967 - AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
Crew: Command Pilot Virgil I.“Gus” Grissom, Senior Pilot Edward H. White, & Pilot Roger B. Chaffee
“It was perhaps the defining moment in our race to get to the moon. The ultimate success of Apollo was made possible by the sacrifices of Grissom, White and Chaffee. The accident profoundly affected everyone in the program. There was an unspoken promise on everyone’s part to the three astronauts that their deaths would not be in vain.” - Gene Kranz

Michael Collins (b. October 31, 1930), the poet laureate of the Apollo Program, was born 89 years ago today!
“I really didn’t appreciate the first planet (Earth) until I saw the second one
. I cannot recall (the Moon’s) tortured surface without thinking of the infinite variety the delightful planet earth offers.” - Michael Collins

also one thing i wanna highlight is how great michael trotter is as gus??? like probably my favorite portrayal of gus so far (i do love shea whigham’s gus in first man tho...) but god michael is so perfect as gus??? like just great casting and he nails gus’ accent (i think a lil more gravelly than gus’ but i love it omg)
