Lyra has a nightmare and Lee isn't around. Who does she go to? Who's the one she's closest to after Lee?

Um...so I can’t imagine Lee not being around, but if he wasn’t, I’d say she’d go to Usnavi first-you guys are going to get to see her interacting with all of them one on one very soon, but Usnavi is already raising a kid so I’d imagine he’d know how to comfort her the best. They are all going to be stand-in dads for her. Trust me. These are HER boys.

Who cooks meals? Do they cook their own food? Or is there a designated cook? I know Alex cooked for Pippa but is he the one to ring the suppertime bell? And who is the best cook?

They pretty much cook their own food, but Alexander’s a great cook and if he’s cooking something that smells really nice they pull the whole toddler “I like *insert whatever it is*. 

Usnavi is also a great cook and if he’s cooking they’re definitely eating it. He is also the designated coffee maker.

Ruben is more of a baker. He knows how to cook, but he’s better at baking-learned from his mom and so did the Marcado sisters. He can make super delicious homemade cinnamon rolls, cookies, and knows how to make butter believe it or not. He also taught them the trick of separating egg yolks from whites with a water bottle and said, “science”. They were all impressed.

Alvie can burn toast. That’s about it. He knows how to cook a frozen pizza and use the toaster, but if he has other people cook for him...

Lee knows how to smoke meat, dry meat-the outdoorsy survival kind of cook. He likes to grill. He does make delicious steak and eggs, though.

Should we expect smut in Rochambeau? 🙈 What is a "turn on" for the boys? Does Lee Scoresby have a romantic/sexual interest?

So...no smut in this one, just some hints of stuff (b/c this fic was originally written for my eleven year old niece who came up with the idea) but that’s not to say we can’t have separate parts for ‘missing’ pieces of the story as a separate work. 

We can indulge the other part of your question though.

- Lee is pretty hard for us to ship him with anyone b/c his focus is Lyra. I can’t really picture him putting attention on anyone else, but that’s not to say he probably doesn’t get out and get laid once in a while. He’s just not really interested in a committed relationship right now.

So....Alexander, I’d say his turn ons...back in the day, he probably got laid every week and you know then Eliza was never not pregnant so every time she sneezed was probably a turn on. After his life with Eliza, it’s not realistic to think he took to celibacy. He probably even attempted to start over a few times, but he just couldn’t get over Eliza. He probably had sex though, just meaningless sex. This will shock everyone, but I think he’s honestly kind of vanilla-y. I think at this point in his life, his biggest turn on is love and stability. 

Usnavi, of course, has Vanessa and he’s happy. They live together and get to be parents to Sonny basically. Usnavi likes to be dominated. He’s a bit on the submissive side of sex-and don’t forget he has the cheat factor of telepathy so he knows what Vanessa wants. He’s a “Yes, Dear” kind of guy in every sense of the way. I promise you he’s been pegged and probably doesn’t care who knows.

Ruben’s pretty easy. He’s turned on by affection. Not necessarily a ‘dominate me’ (he’s had enough of that in Jamaica), but a ‘please make the first move’ kind of mentality. About to get a little bit dirty from the RACD side (my other fic series if anyone’s interested) but Ruben’s what Alvie calls a unicorn and can basically ‘finish’ without ever being touched. He’s pretty happy and satisfied just to have intimacy and kissing and cuddles and good love making. 

Alvie and sex are a little tricky because he’s used sex a lot to get by. Sometimes hooking up with a dude at a bar meant a place to shower and sleep for the night. He’s extremely sex-positive and is more scared of the emotional aspects of a relationship than sex. He does like to get a little rough now and then (get tossed on the bed, held down, tied up, biting) but Ruben’s not totally into that (yet) but no worries because Alvie is turned on by just about anything. Good coffee? Sure. Cute laugh? Sure. SpoilernotSpoiler he’s also really turned on by Ruben being in control of his powers and taking bad guys down. 

I’ll attempt Lee, but like I said, I only see him as a loveable cowboy dad. I feel like Lee would kind of like to be dominated and take on a submissive role in the bedroom, but don’t call him Daddy. That’s weird.

@break-so-beautifully has her own opinions (as we are two different writers) so here are hers:

I agree with Alex.  The whole thing.  He's old fashioned and vanilla.  He's never had another real relationship other than Eliza.  He's been with other women, but it just wasn't the same, so he's sort of given up on ever finding real love again.

Lee - fairly similar , but I think he'd be more dominant but would not be opposed to being submissive every so often.  I think that Lee's primary focus is Lyra and I absolutely do not ship him with anyone as a result.

Ruben just wants to be loved for who he is.  He doesn't want to be dominated, but he's not opposed to someone else taking the lead.  Also, he's not opposed to experimenting with new things either.  He's a cuddler after going so long with people just using his and not really taking his feelings, wants, and needs into account.  And he's loyal like a dang puppy.  

Alvie is way more sexually experienced than Ruben and that's not necessarily a good thing.  Alvie's been hurt, rejected and used which only complicates his sometimes fragile mental state.  He's always game to try new things and as such, he keeps Ruben on his toes.  At the end of the day though, he's also loyal like a puppy dog.  

Ruben and Alvie sort of see each other as their lights at the end of the tunnel.  Ruben thinks Alvie saved him and Alvie thinks Ruben saved him.  They just work.  They shouldn't, but they do.  This is further evidenced by the fact that their abilities and control of said abilities are enhanced when their together.

That leaves Usavni.  Usnavi is VERY content to be at home with Vanessa.  Like Eliza is for Alex, Vanessa is his one true love.  He'll do anything for her.  I agree that he's more submissive in the bedroom, but he also sometimes like to show her that he can be the protector.  I would imagine they have some interesting role play that would probably involve wresting for control.  He lets her win.  Or at least that what he tells himself.

Who sings in the shower? Who leaves the shower a mess? Who uses the most expensive products? I can't imagine all of these dudes sharing a bathroom and not wondering these things.

So the barracks are three story. They don’t necessarily have to share a bathroom b/c there’s only a handful of them and this was made for multiple people so they probably have a regular bathroom they use. Alexander and Usnavi are clean freaks. You won’t find anything out of place where they shower and Alexander Usnavi shower. 

I don’t think any of them use overly expensive products. Ruben has to use stuff for sensitive skin via damaged skin. Alvie likes to smell good so you can bet he has the green apple shampoo and tropical paradise body wash and stuff. Usnavi uses pomade because his dad always did.

Alvie leaves stuff everywhere-towels on the floor, hair in the sink, floss picks all over the place-Ruben kind of trains him to be neater. 

Lee forgets he’s sharing a space and leaves stuff out or his towel on the floor. You can bet the first time he buys stuff for Lyra-it’s the clueless dad off brand everything that leaves your hair feeling dirtier than it was before you washed it. He basically would be fine using dish soap to shower. He does however learn from Lyra what kind of soaps and shampoo she likes because Lawless did spoil her a bit and got the best stuff.

Alexander is an in out of the shower in five seconds kind of guy- no time for singing. Usnavi definitely sings in the shower, and Alvie.  Lee when he’s in the mood. Ruben has epiphanies in the shower. It’s where he’s going to discover the formula that wins him a Nobel Prize someday.

Ruben and Alvie are the ones that conserve water-they shower together most of the time.

Alexander: Realistically...he’s a couple of centuries old, but he places himself late 30s to 40 ish

Usnavi: 26

Ruben: 28-30 ish. Give or take

Alvie: 23 or 24

Lee: Late 30s. 36-39 ish

Do the Rochambeau Guys Look Identical?

Okay so we’ve gotten a few questions about faces. Namely, how do the Rochambeau guys look alike and not question it. This is up to the reader, really, but realistically, they wouldn’t look alike. To them, they don’t look alike. We picture them all as Lin b/c that’s what we’re used to as viewers. The more I write these characters, the less I see them as Lin which sort of helps b/c then my brain isn’t constantly thinking “CLONES” or something. I’m going to kind of talk about how I envision them and if you have a particular faceclaim for one or more of them, we’d love for you to reblog and add it to this post because we’re curious as to what you guys see-even if it’s Lin at different ages. Remember, whatever YOU envision is correct. That’s all that matters. I just decided since we were asked three times to kind of give an idea of what I see when I’m writing, but LOVE to know your ideas :)

Alexander: So Alex being the oldest, I get this sense of maturity and looking older than the rest of them (not necessarily Lee). I do see a lot of Lin b/c you can’t have Hamilton and not think of Lin. @break-so-beautifully​ has really molded him into this seasoned veteran wise badass that I adore and the more I tried to to think of a face for him, the harder it was b/c I see Lin but also just this handsome, suave guy who’s going to do whatever it takes to protect his new family. Definitely older Lin vibes.

Physical Description: On the shorter side-no taller than 5′8, and this is important to me because I’ve never been a fan of guys trying to make themselves bigger b/c height is something you can’t help anyway, and a short man that owns his height and is unapologetic about it is a plus in my book. Alex definitely owns his height. He’s lean and fit and has short hair (he’ll grow it out back to Ham style later) and is very Lin in those soulful kind of eyes and has a mild New York accent. No scars due to his condition. 

Usnavi: I definitely get young Lin vibes from Usnavi, but I picture Usnavi being on the thin side-like he’s extremely lanky and is probably still ID’d out at bars. He’s on the darker side of skin shade (being Dominican) and has thick hair (you just can’t tell b/c it’s under a hat) which he keeps short. He has braces (didn’t get them until he was an adult) and looks younger than he is. 

Physical Description: Lanky, average height. Thick hair and soulful eyes, but definitely tired looking with dark circles under them most of the time. Has the darkest shade of skin out of all the guys. Little scars here and there just from life. Braces. Almost always wears his hat. 

Not exactly, but I have this kind of look about him in my head (the hair, thick eyebrows, facial hair, and thin boyish look about him)

Ruben: *sighs* Here we go-my baby. So...Ruben is also on the darker side of skin tone. He has that sweet, soulful-eyes Lin look to him, but his hair is curly. Like, when his hair gets long enough you can put that shit in a ponytail in no time. He has marks all over his body from his traumatic experience in Jamaica-burn marks, scars from being hit with an extension cord and a belt, a stab wound scar in his abdomen from an accidental stabbing, and Ian’s name branded into his chest from a hot coat hanger (check out RACD to really delve into this). On his face, he only has one visible scar near his jawline 

Physical Description: Average height. Scars all over (wears long sleeves all the time and mostly sweaters and collar shirts), curly hair that can get absolutely out of control if he doesn’t tame it, big soulful eyes, soft spoken, stutters a lot-and the stuttering is extremely important. This isn’t stutters once in a while. This is a more frequent than not kind of thing. Even in regular conversation, he can be trying to push one word out for several seconds (don’t worry-none of the boys call attention to it). Second darkest shade of skin out of the guys.

Luckily I have a faceclaim for Ruben and his cute face and curly hair.

The hair: level unbrushed and untamed

Alvie: The baby of the group (unless you’re counting Lyra). Alvie is the smallest, definitely on the thin side and has just this boyish, scrufy look about him. I picture him having kind of a really soft voice with a slightly raspy texture sometimes (plays in well to his power involves sleep so he might sound tired a lot). I have a faceclaim for him for sure. In my headcanon, Alvie’s half white and it sort of worked with him struggling to fit in growing up. My face claim for him is Alexander O’conner (Rex Orange County). He has the right boyish look to him.

Physical Description: The smallest of the guys (but also the youngest) and def still looks like a teenager almost. He’s half white and looks more white than Hispanic (but he does tan in the sun). He has a gap between his front teeth and doesn’t grow facial hair as well as the rest of them. He has self-harm scars on his wrists (from his teenage years) and a small scar on his left temple from a botched ETC session at Rochambeau. He has thick, straight sticky-up y hair. He doesn’t particularly know how to (or care to) to tame it and in Rochambeau they kept his hair short for ETC treatment so it would have gone from this:

Lee Scoresby: He kind of ties with Alex on the Lin faceclaim only he’s not short. Lee is definitely the tallest of the bunch. I think b/c he’s the newest character I can’t picture anyone but Lin, but he definitely screams ‘tallest’ in my head.

Physical Description: The tallest of the guys with a mustache and thick hair quiff. He’s right on the level of fit with Alexander only he does have scars-just cuts and nicks here and there. It’s important to me that he’s tall b/c he can tote Lyra around when she’s hurt or tired like a mother koala bear.

Lawless: Honestly since he’s not a Lin, I did not have to struggle with him. He’s just Leslie Odom Jr. I picture him almost exclusively always in a suit. Even when he goes to bed. Even when he showers.

Pippa: Same. She’s just Phillipa Soo. 

Lyra: Dafne Keen only slightly younger Dafne Keen b/c she’s eleven in this story and I feel she’s small and can fit in tight places to hide and spy and she has those little kid long toothpick legs that are not in proportion to her body yet. More legs than torso.

i'm nervous! never sent an ask for a fic before-only canon fandom. I am intrigued that Rochambeau is very 420 friendly. Does anybody besides Alvie smoke weed and if so will it be included?

Don’t be nervous! This is a great question. Alexander most likely outgrew smoking a few centuries ago (he may once in a while just to ‘be one of the guys’ but it probably doesn’t do much for him). Ruben probably only smokes it with Alvie. Alvie smokes it on the regular b/c it helps him with stress and to sleep. Lee probably smoked it once not knowing it wasn’t a cigarette and then decided he didn’t like being sleepy/hungry and likes to be on his game. Usnavi probably smokes it with Alvie more than Ruben does, but it’s probably not a regular thing for him. We might throw in a scene or two of Alvie and Usnavi smoking together and talking about life.

What are they guys (and Lyra and Pippas) favourite late night snacks?

Usnavi likes Takis and cucumber slices with tajin, Alexander likes coffee all hours of the day and night, Ruben likes chamomile tea, Alvie likes popcorn and m&ms, Lee likes actual meals. If he's up at 12 am, he's not going to eat Poptarts and cereal, he's going to make a bacon sandwich or cook steak and eggs, Lyra loves Poptarts and cereal (especially Lucky Charms bc Alvie introduced her), and Pippa likes tea and cookies.

Alexander: Plain old boxer briefs 

Usnavi:  A boxers kind of guy. Also, he and Sonny just mix up their laundry so half the time they’re not even sure whose is whose

Ruben:  A boxers boy, but he likes the plaid

Alvie: Come on, you know he has the best undies

Lee: This just looks like something a balloon cowboy would wear under his pants
