The whole “Alicent is just protecting her children” argument is really getting old.
If her main priority truly was the wellbeing of her children, she wouldn’t have spent years turning them against Rhaenyra.
The only way she could have protected her children would have been to do the exact opposite: attempt to bring them and Rhaenyra close together.
But that’s not what she did. She made herself Rhaenyra’s enemy, not only by bullying her, but also by controlling Viserys, turning her children against their half-sister, and constantly gossiping about the parentage of Rhaenyra’s boys.
Didn’t she realize that as soon as Rhaenyra became Queen the fate of her children would be in Rhaenyra’s hands?
What did she hope to accomplish through all those foolish acts?
The only possible answer: she didn’t care about the consequences, because she knew that as soon as Viserys died, she and her “Green” party would usurp the throne.
All of Alicent’s actions resulted in the deaths of her children as well as her grandchildren. She is the only one truly responsible for the downfall of her family.

“The whole point of the story is that both Rhaenyra and Aegon were unfit to rule.”
Wrong.
The point of the story is that in a patriarchal society, women would get usurped regardless what they do, and what kind of people they are.
Rhaena (firstborn child of King Aenys)
Rhaenys (only child of Prince Aemon, eldest son and heir of King Jaehaerys I)
Rhaenyra (firstborn child of King Viserys I)
The Dance of the Dragons is about how Rhaenyra Targaryen was usurped by her evil and greedy stepmother in favor of her own son (the story was originally called “The Princess and the Queen”).
This is an absolute monarchy. More than half of the monarchs who sat that throne, were unfit to rule. Nobody cares about that.
It’s about who is the rightful ruler.
The rightful ruler was Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (just like Empress Matilda had been the rightful Queen of England).
And as a plus, out of all of King Viserys’ children, Rhaenyra is obviously the most qualified/most competent to sit the Iron Throne. There is no question about that.

Also, he wasn’t “sharply questioned”, now was he? I didn’t see Rhaenyra grab a weapon with the express intention of hurting him. I didn’t see her repeatedly INSIST on it and have a complete and total breakdown when it didn’t happen. Rhaenyra knows her father, she knows he would never have his child tortured. The threat was empty, designed to put pressure on Alicent, and we have zero evidence that Rhaenyra would have done ANY follow through.
Unlike Alicent, who literally grabbed a dagger and rushed Rhaenyra’s child to gouge his eye out, and DID in fact stab Rhaenyra and could have fucking killed her.
Actions speak louder than words y’all.
People will understand Alicent’s fear of Rhaenyra for demanding Aemond be “sharply questioned” but forget the ten years of context in which Rhaenyra had to fend for her children against Alicent’s dangerous threats/attacks + how—in one fell swoop—Harwin is murdered, Otto is promoted, and Larys becomes Lord prior to this event…
Oh, but Rhaenyra grasping the opportunity at Driftmark to make Alicent stand down once is “proof” that she is wantonly dangerous?? Please, Rhaenyra was backed into a corner for the majority of S1 and had more substantial reasons to be fearful of Alicent.
Unlike Alicent, Rhaenyra has ten years of definitive proof that Alicent does not care about directly endangering her or her children. Alicent, on the other hand, founds her fears on one lie.

TGs will really be like, "Actually, the Greens did win the Dance because they succeeded in making the world a worse place."
Okay... I'll concede. What a win.

Greenies can’t even handle the idea that Alicent was cruel for having a newborn baby ripped from his mothers arms moments after birth. They froth out the mouth defending her trying to stab a child in the eye. I think they might grab literal pitchforks and hunt you down for this op, it’s not worth it😭 (they’ll never not be delulu).
I swear if people keep coming at me with that bad faith "Rhaenyra coerced Cole" nonsense that they 100% refuse to be reasoned out of I WILL explain exactly how Alicent weaponized her status, exploited Larys's disability, and held her knowledge first of his brother's crimes and then his own crimes over his head in order to force him into subservience whilst simultaneously humiliating him over his disability.

Bro you can’t just leak spoiler footage from the last season of HOTD like this😭😭😭
Leaked Alicent footage from the end of the Dance
youtube
Alicent, abandoned by her allies who flocked to her cause only out of opportunism and bigotry, living with the knowledge that all her children died in the war she chose to start, demands that her only living grandchild risk her life and sacrifice her position to murder Rhaenyra's son so Alicent can convince herself that she won her personal lifelong vendetta against the stepdaughter she abused.
Jaehaera refuses. Alicent reacts.
Viserys's ghost makes an appearance at the end.
Addendum: I've been informed that it's possible this is actually the original footage from Alicent demanding the eye of a child even after both she and her son escaped consequences for treason.

That’s why Rhaenyra’s allies continued to fight in her name after her death, whereas Aegon’s allies murdered him. The very nature of their conflicting claims means that all the honorable oathkeepers sided with Rhaenyra, and only the untrustworthy treasonous oathbreakers sided with Aegon.
Sometimes I get the feeling that people in this fandom don’t understand the meaning of an oath.
The Asoiaf world may be fantasy, but it is still based on real-life medieval setting.
In European medieval times, the values of the Church were held in high regard, and a person’s word actually meant something. When someone made a promise/an oath, especially a noble, it was expected of that person to honor it. Failure to do so resulted in dire consequences.
It’s not like it is now in modern 21st century, when everyone makes promises they end up breaking eventually and it’s like *shrug* “oh well, too bad” and no consequences follow.
So, when the Lords of the Realm swore oaths to uphold the ascension of Rhaenyra Targaryen on the Iron Throne, they were not at all “stale” or “meaningless”, as Otto Hightower tries to argue (that’s modern mentality and kind of poor writing on the part of the showrunners). It’s a pledge made in the name of a House.
And just because some of the Lords who swore those oaths died, that doesn’t mean that those oaths died with them (as the Lannisters, who have no honor whatsoever, try to argue). The oaths were made on behalf of Houses, not individuals, and therefore, the Houses as a whole were expected to respect them.
The reason Rhaenyra Targaryen had most of the Realm on her side is because the majority of Westerosi Houses understand the meaning of an oath. They also acknowledge that with the absence of an actual succession law, Rhaenyra Targaryen is the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

Daenerys is such a slay. In order to ruin her character, they had to also ruin everyone else’s. Queen said you take me down I’m taking the whole show with me💅

Honestly, I’ve never seen someone who is TB yet hates Daenerys (not saying they don’t exist, but I’ve never seen them). It seems to me that TG and Dany antis are much more the same factions— that is, Targ haters who see them as nothing more than one dimensional colonizer villains (except for Aegon + Aemond for some reason..............).
As for myself, my love for Dany is WHY I love Rhaenyra. I’m not saying they are the same, obviously Dany is way more of a progressive liberator fighting for the common folk whereas Rhaenyra is mostly just fighting for her own claim and her family. But it’s about the way that the both refuse to bow down to the oppressive standards of their time. Even if Nyra is fighting for herself, she is still defying patriarchal beliefs that says she should be a meek and obedient baby maker for some lord husband her father picks out. As a woman in Westeros, she IS oppressed, period. Her (peaceful) ascension to power and successful rule would set a precedent to allow other women in Westeros to rise to positions of power. It’s nowhere near comparable to Daenerys’s relentless crusade against injustice, but they both share that same rebellion and refusal to accept the messed up and evil norms of their time/place.
Basically after the shit show that was S8 GOT, I saw a young Targ lady fighting against oppressive bullshit ideals and said “well, you remind me of Daenerys, so let’s go Queen I will defend you till my dying breath.” I don’t care if Rhaenyra is not perfect— no man has EVER had to be to claim the throne. I’m not saying TB and team Daenerys automatically go together, but to me they very much do.
Dany and Nyra are my Queens❤️🖤
TB hating on Daenerys is so WILDLY INSANE like don’t play yourself cause I will get nasty real quick.
Daenerys, 14 yo, former sex slave, was killing oppressors and trying to destroy the institution of slavery, and one of her closest friend and advisor is a young Black girl.
Rhaenyra, 38 yo, a privileged white woman who never know hunger and poverty (unlike Daenerys), was HUNTING AND TRYING TO KILL a teenage Black girl.
Rhaenyra would call me a dirty monkey and Daenerys will advocate for me to get reparations and kill descendant of slavers. They are NOT the same. Daenerys is closer to Nettles than she is to Rhaenyra.
It's actually crazy to me how anyone could hate Dany, much less those who like the blacks, Rhaenyra, or are team black.
I have many...many...(you don't want to know how many I have have) posts defending some of Rhaenyra's decisions against the misogynist people I had to block, but in the long run, Rhaenyra's actions towards Nettles really make her difference from Dany so apparent. [the links i give were the most recent ones and have links in them to other posts of this topic]
I do also say that superficial-politically, the throne should have gone to Rhaenyra...if only to set the necessary precedent. And that if Rhaenyra hadn't done that to Nettles, I'd be 100% behind her emotionally since I can relate to her and like her fashion. And love her relationship with Daemon, their dynamic. But unfortunately, yeah.
Oh, and I get annoyed by both the "dettlers" (nettles x Daemon shippers) who say Nettles was somehow Daemon's best or better relationship AND those who say Nettles somehow wasn't important to the story or to Rhaenyra's cause...like wtf?! How could such polar opposing groups of people be so wrong at the same time?!

Honestly, I do rather like Aegon III x Jaehaera. There's just so much potential to explore in that ship, and while I think in canon it would have never had worked (and Aegon III x Daenaera is excellent), it's interesting to think of an alternate world where Jaehaera lives and they genuinely come to care for each other.
And just like... the aesthetic (that pic of the two kids getting married that so Aegon x Jaehaera coded <3), the angst, the coming together of rival factions, the trauma but also the potential for healing. "All that was left of the mighty House Targaryen, two scared children spouting oaths they didn't understand". Like damn y'all.
If only the content about them weren't so heavily from Team Green stans who like it because it's a "win" for Alicent's bloodline. Like Aegon III x Jaehaera is cool, but I swear if I see ONE indication that Aegon disavows his mother or forgives any of the Greens, I'm noping out of there SO fast. My boy loves his mom and despises the Greens and he damn well should. Jaehaera can be the exception because she is genuinely innocent, but that's IT. And honestly the same with the reverse, it would make no sense for Jaehaera to sympathize with or agree with the Blacks. Which is why I think the ship ultimately would never work, both of them are just way too attached to the family they lost and would never see eye to eye about the war AKA the most sensitive and critical subject to them. The best they could do is just ignore any Green v Black talk and simply support each other through their trauma, but could either of them ever be with someone who believes the person who destroyed their life and forever traumatized them was justified?
I think a portrayal of their relationship (to me at least) would really need to delve into the complexity of their feelings towards one another. The knowledge that the other is innocent of wrongdoing warring with the fact that they will eternally be a walking reminder of their trauma and losses. Wanting to put the past behind them and find peace, but being so wholly unable to do so. Any portrayal where they just easily bond and love each other, and have a happy relationship of healing just feels... disingenuous to their characters.
Idk, I'm rambling. Anyway, keep making your fanart Aegon III x Jaehaera shippers, because it slays.

Aegon III has his mother and father’s sassy and complete contempt for the Lords of Westeros, and really is that not the most important trait to inherit?

I have spent my Saturday afternoon dedicated to these two, my beloved Viserys and Visenya Targaryen (George, I will never forgive you for considering her to be Viserys's wife and deciding for her to die 😭). So yes, this is an AU that I would love to be a reality, Viserys would have had a happier life and a better life partner without a doubt.

I have never in my life seen so many people defend a faction that are so obviously the villains. Greenies will hate Daemon for being an evil person, then turn right around and stan Aemond. The level of delulu🥴
Tumblr media
.
“The Blacks are on the same level as the Greens.”
“There are no sides to choose, they are all equally bad.”
“I’m the people’s team, but says mostly pro-green things.”
“I'm team Greens because they care about the people !”
Tumblr media
Besides I note that out of 4 crimes out of 2 really counts in my eyes.
Blood and Cheese was a response to the murder of Lucerys, caused by the Greens, and the taxes were the fault of (well get that !) again the Greens who had emptied all the coffers !
Which means that only crimes number 2 and 3 are real crimes for me. And I don't know about you, but they always seem less serious than those of the Greens.

The first gen Of Targaryens born after the Dance is such a mid-life crisis for the dynasty as a whole. Are you more "let's get crazy let's grab every opportunity follow our hearts we're 150 years young 🤪" (Aegon Daeron Daena) or are you "welp we've lost everything we based our personality on time to rebuild our sense of self entirely around whichever higher power makes us feel superior to the dirty youngins 🙏" (Rhaena Baelor Naerys Aemon)
