People seem to miss the point of Naruto not being about winning. He often states he doesn't know how to win or fulfill his promises in Shippuden, but that he will keep looking for a way to do so.
The manga is about staying hopeful that one can better the world, and that each new generation renews that hope.
Naruto didn't win over Sasuke, as he says himself: he gave Sasuke hope the world could get better, and saved him from self-destructive despair.
There's something I want to clarify because I see people saying it a lot: you can't lump Kakashi and Naruto together when it comes to their reaction to Obito's story about itachi.
Let's look at Naruto's character first. This will be a bit long because I'm bad with words!
This is how his personality is described on his wiki page: "Naruto is relatively naïve and slow to understand principles or situations. He often requires an oversimplified analogy in order to grasp explanations and can even prove forgetful."
This is the manga panel used to support this description:
Tumblr media
But there are other situations that also prove his general "slow on the uptake" nature:
-Some chapters prior, Naruto sees Kurenai coming out of a hospital and Shikamaru has to explain that she is pregnant and not just fat. Naruto is seen at Asuma's funeral so he almost certainly knows they were in a relationship (although if he didn't know, that would prove the point even further)
-Naruto comes to understand how to swirl the Rasengan only after stirring ramen
-He forgets in the middle of his battle with Madara that only sage jutsu works, then forgets in VOTE2 that Rinnegan can absorb chakra (despite learning this with Pain/Nagato)
To put it simply-- Naruto is someone who works off the essentials and not complexity. If he's not thinking about it, then he's not thinking about it. This is evident in his jutsu, the way he fights, and most importantly how he relates to other people. He has one piece of knowledge, works off that until he gets something he can fit into that knowledge and then expands. This is also the foundation for some of his conflict with Sasuke.
Tumblr media
And this lack of understanding is something that PLAGUES Naruto. He is not proud of it and it isn't something he sees as "conviction in his ideals". He is distraught and ashamed that he cannot understand Sasuke so he can help him. He repeats that he cannot become Hokage if he can't save Sasuke, that he's not a good enough ninja, he is constantly trying to figure out what Sasuke is doing and thinking and feeling.
Tumblr media
A big part (if not the biggest part) of Naruto's character arc is turning his compassionate nature into empathy. Figuring out how to make his ideals compatible with the viewpoints of others. This starts with Zabuza and Haku, continues to Nagato/Pain, then Obito, and culminates with Sasuke. As a kid he can get away with just yelling at and brute forcing opponents who are totally unfamiliar with his values like camaraderie or kindness/humanity such as Zabuza or Gaara, but with people like the rest who were raised with his values and rejected them, he needs to figure out how they think and bridge the gap. Enter a complete different Naruto: one who thinks, asks questions, then acts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that conversation with Obito. At this point Naruto is extremely confused as to what the fuck is going on with Sasuke because he was convinced Orochimaru was manipulating Sasuke into leaving so when Orochimaru died Sasuke would come back, then he realized that Sasuke is focused on Itachi but when Itachi died Sasuke STILL wasn't coming back. At this point Naruto learned from Pain just how shit the world is beyond how he was treated, so he doesn't know that there's more to "pain" than just fixing the problem that caused it.
And it's not like he's like Sakura (sorry girl), who grew up with loving parents in a safe household with no strife or hardship and had the privilege of choosing who to associate with, and therefore is choosing apathy to uphold the "shinobi way". He grew up with almost no human contact aside from violence from the village people. He has nothing opportunity to relate to other people, and that forces him to be indoctrinated with the idea that the only way he can relate to people is fighting and winning. He's learning the intricacies of alllll that other stuff from none other than Sasuke.
So yeah, I would also be confused if the person I was learning love from filled themselves with nothing but hate. I would not be able to understand it and I would deeply struggle to follow from A to Z what happened because not only is it something I am only learning to understand, it's coming from the person who I was learning from. Naruto is doing exactly this BEFORE Obito even shows up.
Tumblr media
We now get to the event in question. Obito tells them about Itachi and Kakashi says "This makes no sense." as if the whole thing is irrational. Obito says Kakashi and Naruto know nothing about Sasuke. Naruto does refute this saying that Sasuke is "an avenger" (cue the cowboy banjo), BUT then he starts asking questions.
Tumblr media
He asks Madara/Obito if he's manipulating Sasuke because he was just told that Madara/Obito was manipulating Pain. Naruto is also told that Madara/Obito was responsible for the Kyuubi attack. Naruto now knows Madara/Obito orchestrates events for the sake of manipulation and pushing people to hatred and anger. He gets his answer:
Tumblr media
Madara/Obito says "Sasuke chose for himself" and Naruto calls this out as a lie. This is where I think people are getting confused. I think the assumption is that Naruto is saying "Sasuke didn't choose because he cares about Konoha deep down" when actually he's saying "Sasuke wouldn't have chosen to be filled with hate on his own (because Sasuke isn't a hateful person)." Which makes more sense as Naruto is right about this, and this is supported by a few things:
Sasuke gave up his path to revenge to save Naruto's life multiple times. Naruto knows instinctually and that at his core, Sasuke doesn't want vengeance (Itachi's quote that "You know what kind of man you are when you're dying" comes into play here, as the first time we see this it's Sasuke dying to save Naruto while forsaking his plans of revenge with a smile on his face).
Sasuke isn't a cruel or irrational person. He wouldn't choose to kill a bunch of random people who have nothing to do with what happened to him for something small-minded like blood for blood. This is proven by the fact that he doesn't hang on to that rationale for long, and in the end explains he's doing it because the shinobi system as it is needs a mfing reset so this never happens to anyone else. The only times Sasuke really insists on the revenge point is when people try to downplay what happened to him and essentially tell him to "get over it". He reminds them that his brother destroyed both their lives for the right of the citizens of Konoha to laugh, and that he lost his entire family for some dude who put their eyes in his arm and just forced himself into the position of Hokage.
The rest of the conversations that happen afterwards.
Naruto asks "Why did this happen to him (Sasuke)? Why did he choose revenge (instead of just living his life)?" Again, the wording here is specific and intentional for reasons that become clear after. Naruto sees the burdens on Sasuke as things put onto him by external factors. This is the same as Naruto, who was turned into an orphan jinchuuriki because he was born in the wrong place at the wrong time to the wrong people, and the fact others make him responsible for the problems of the world. This is mentioned in the chapters leading up to this discussion when Sai rightfully calls out Sakura (and everyone else), and it is also a point Hinata brings up before she tries to fight Pain.
Tumblr media
A side note here is that I believe this is another callback parallel to when Naruto says that Sasuke had a look of anger while they were fighting as kids, but it wasn't directed towards Naruto. I believe Naruto is angry when he thinks about Sasuke, but not because he's angry AT Sasuke.
Anyways, for the rest of the conversation Naruto does not make anymore statements about Sasuke, he simply asks questions for Obito to clarify what he's talking about. This is when Madara/Obito summarizes the story of the SO6P and his sons. Kakashi dismisses this by saying it's nothing but a myth, but Naruto doesn't say anything. This is where the panel where Naruto is saying he will wait to communicate with Sasuke before committing to any one action or plan, even though literally every single person he knows is telling him he's a POS for not wanting to kill Sasuke, comes into play-- Naruto has not made a decision, which means he considered the perspective Madara/Obito gave him about Sasuke's position, recognizes that Madara/Obito is an unreliable narrator for Sasuke's feelings, and will not make assumptions about Sasuke's feelings because he wants to understand them. This is why when Naruto finally goes to stop Sakura and Sasuke, there's a lot of frames having to do with their eyes meeting. Naruto is looking into Sasuke's eyes to understand his feelings as he said he would.
In the meantime Kakashi AND Sakura are pretty much patronizing Sasuke by acting like they're doing something noble by killing him and that he's hurting them by not letting them or something. Naruto makes a comment about Team 7 and Sasuke reminds him he doesn't give a fuck about Team 7 (he only cares about Naruto at this point), and Kakashi tries to patronize Naruto as well but Naruto just ignores him. But more importantly, the single most important panel that proves that Naruto does not have some authoritarian, Sasuke-must-submit-to-me-bc-hes-WRONG mindset comes:
Tumblr media
I would like anyone who thinks that Naruto is some fascist who wants to indoctrinate Sasuke into his ideology why Naruto would talk to an enemy who wants him dead, ask them open-ended questions about Sasuke, say he's going to look into Sasuke's eyes and figure out what's going on before he does anything, look into Sasuke's eyes and then empathize with Sasuke in front of people important to him that Sasuke just tried to kill. What's more likely is Naruto came to understand Sasuke after finally having all the pieces he didn't since he was 12 (maybe even 8 or however old they were when they had that spar), and by understanding Sasuke his resolve strengthens and he understands what he has to do. Imho this is the climax of Naruto's character arc. Everything after this is just how he resolves things with the decision he made. Kakashi once again patronizes Naruto, and Naruto just ignores him and keeps staring at Sasuke. And when Kakashi moves, Naruto asks if he's going to kill Sasuke. Naruto pushes Kakashi out of the way and physically restrains him from killing Sasuke to "trade blows" with Sasuke and they enter their mind space. Naruto confesses his feelings to Sasuke about how the same they are, how he feels less alone when he's with him and that he's happy he met Sasuke. About how he was hateful and wanted the revenge because he was a jinchuuriki.
Sasuke responds:
Tumblr media
Which I think is valid. Sakura and Kakashi have been talking about how Sasuke has changed, he's irredeemable, he's bad now, whatever boring shinobi cope they have. Sakura, who claims to love Sasuke unconditionally and be okay with him being "evil" so long as she can be with him, just tried to kill him. He is right to be distrustful of Naruto's appeal to emotion as well. Even the people who make the assertion I'm addressing about Naruto think that Naruto's intention is to "fix" or "change" Sasuke. It's actually the opposite, he's trying to protect Sasuke from blocking himself from all the things he wants and person he is.
Sasuke tells him to choose: kill him and be a hero OR die by Sasuke's hand and lose. Naruto doesn't even address the villagers Sasuke says he's going to kill lmao. He skips straight rejecting the options Sasuke has presented him.
Then comes the infamous double suicide proposal, but I think the frames before it make it even more clear what Naruto is trying to say:
Tumblr media
Remember that Madara/Obito just told him that Sasuke's burden is not just based on what happened in his life, but is a divine fate he has no control of as a reincarnation curse that some God caused. He also implied to Naruto that Naruto is destined to "win" over him as Ashura did Indra, and Hashirama did to Madara. Naruto's unique life circumstances require him to win the favour of the community to develop his bonds through protecting his village as a jinchuuriki, to fulfill his role as Asura's reincarnation and gain strength. If Naruto abandons the village at this point, he cannot get stronger and Sasuke WILL kill him because Sasuke has more hatred. If Naruto dies, Sasuke will be left alone again and Naruto doesn't want that to happen. Sasuke doesn't even want that to happen, if he did he would've killed Naruto multiple times over by now. He wants his family back because he doesn't want to be alone anymore. He wants to end the shinobi world so he can once and for all stop suffering, and no one else has to suffer like him again. If Naruto kills Sasuke because the village people tell him to, Sasuke is again alone (and so is Naruto) and Naruto doesn't want that. The only solution is that they either die together or that they live together. This is where the story stops being about "Naruto trying to get Sasuke to the good side" and more like "Naruto trying to get Sasuke to stay with him by his side." This is also the only way that the plot makes sense. If the SO6P's failure was separating the sons based on birthright, then the only way it can be undone is if they stay together as equals. This is why Naruto looks so happy when he says they can both die together and shed their mortal circumstances and just be together, and even after VOTE2 and Naruto "won", Naruto AND Sasuke are both happy when they meet in the afterlife, and when Sasuke offers to end his life Naruto gets mad again.
Naruto is not trying to prove he's right about Konoha or the shinobi system, he is trying to prove he's right about the nature of his relationship with Sasuke and prove their need to be together.

SAKURA’S TOXIC LOVE
Sakura’s “love” towards Sasuke has never been a positive thing either for Sasuke or Sakura herself. When introducing Sakura, Kishi described her as a person who pursues “selfish love”.
Tumblr media
誰でも内なるサクラのような心の声を 持ってますし、それに自分勝手な恋な んかも含めてリアルな人間らしさがあ っていいと思っています。 “Everyone has an inner voice in their head like Inner Sakura and I think her pursuing a selfish love is very realistic.”
The word used here is 自分勝手な 恋な, (jibungattena koina) which means selfish/self centered/egoistic love. It’s a negative word.
Now the argument from stans would of course be that Sakura and her love “matured” but this is not the case and Kishi made it very clear. He was really consistent in how he drew Sakura’s confessions and Sasuke’s reactions to them, and to her.
Tumblr media
Notice how Sasuke only reacts when Sakura refers to herself. He’s amused. At first, Sakura makes sense, but the self centered person that she is, she just had to make it about herself. She could have left it at “revenge for its own sake won’t make you happy” but she’s not that kind of person or character. And Sasuke knows this. Since the beginning, Kishi showed Sasuke as someone who is extremely perceptive of people. He could tell multiple times that Naruto wasn’t the real Naruto but a fake, when Sakura couldn’t. He could tell Sakura was acting off while Naruto couldn’t. He could tell Naruto was changing. He knew there was something off about Kabuto even when everyone else had accepted him and trusted him. He could have cared less about all the fangirls and their shallow infatuation on him. When Sakura spoke cruelly about Naruto, Sasuke was angry. When she implied she immediately wants to give up on the bell test, Sasuke was angry. Sakura’s lack of honesty and resolve as well as her selfishness and ignorance annoy him. Her taking her family for granted annoys him, because family is everything to Sasuke, it’s his character motivation. However, when Sakura starts to cry and talk about loneliness and family, he tries to comfort her calmly, telling her that they have different paths and it’s time to part. But this sets Sakura off.
Tumblr media
Not only she starts to confess her love in order to sway Sasuke, despite the fact not only he has never given her any reasons to think he returns her feelings, he has also told her that he won’t change his path for her sake. This whole conversation has been all about Sakura being wrong, having complete lack of tact and compassion by insisting even if she has a family, Sasuke leaving her would leave her feeling just as lonely as he is, and talking about how SHE hurts. Literally how dare she? Regardless, she goes on, and makes it worse.
Tumblr media
She not only does not try to understand Sasuke’s reasons, but she completely flips on what she just said a moment ago about how revenge won’t make Sasuke happy and shows that at the end of the day, it is not about Sasuke’s well being or needs but about her and her selfish desires to have Sasuke be with her. And Sasuke knows. This is why he was amused before when Sakura added his revenge won’t make her happy. And after her showing her true colors once again, Sasuke says this:
Tumblr media
A direct translation would be “I knew it (yappari), you are annoying.” But both definitely fit Sakura’s character. It’s not a coincidence both of these “I knew it” come after she makes it about herself. And Sasuke is again amused because he was right about her. That she’s insincere and selfish. Him thanking her doesn’t change this, it’s simply Sasuke being kind and trying to leave on good terms.
So in part 1 Sasuke saw Sakura as a comrade, but in part 2 of the manga Sasuke and Sakura do not have a relationship at all. When Team 7 first sees Sasuke, Kishi shows Sasuke only looking at Naruto, they have direct eye contact for multiple pages, and Sasuke is constantly addressing Naruto as well. Sasuke only acknowledges Sakura by saying her name when he sees her, but not further, they do not have a conversation. In the Kage Summit arc Sasuke treats Sakura like any fodder ninja. He’s not at all surprised Sakura has come to kill him nor does he hesitate to kill her in retaliation. Again, Kishi shows only Naruto having an effect on Sasuke when he arrives to save Sakura and gets through to Sasuke.
I mentioned all this because it’s important to acknowledge Sakura hasn’t gotten a real reaction out of Sasuke throughout the whole part 2, when her second confession comes.
Tumblr media
Not only does she once again degrade herself in front of Sasuke, which to anyone possessing any emotional intelligence is not a sign of love, but she also makes it about herself again, her “place” in Sasuke’s heart. First of all, degrading yourself to your “loved one” is to make them feel pity or guilt. Secondly, she does not address Sasuke’s reasons, or try to understand them. She talks about how things can go back to the way they were, but Sasuke doesn’t want that, he knows he used to live a lie when he didn’t know the truth. She thinks crying and asking Sasuke to think about HER would make Sasuke sway just like during her first confession. Please point out to me where is the change in the dynamic? There is none. She acts like she understands at first, but then she turns irrational, she degrades herself, she howls and cries and begs. And makes it about herself. She is still selfish. And Sasuke again acknowledges that he has always been right about her.
Tumblr media
And what does Kishi has to say about Sakura’s “love” after the ending? The link to the full interview is here but I will crop it because the image is so big. The part I’ll bring up is near the end (which is on left):
Tumblr media
そうでtね・でも サクラはサスケ中毒で Sakura is addicted to Sasuke.
Kishi uses 中毒 to describe Sakura’s feelings/addiction.
Tumblr media
I’m showing the details because addiction itself doesn’t even cut it how negative the word is. Is pictures of skulls and bones what you’d expect when you google this word? Because it’s used for general poisoning and drug addiction. If he wanted, he could have used a more light-hearted word (there are those) for addiction but he didn’t because that’s not how he sees it. Obviously, some jp fans on forums were offended too, said Sakura sounds like a crazy stalker who should be locked up in mental asylum.
And finally, Kishi’s NYCC 2015 interview:
Kishimoto: Sakura… she’s kind of a hard woman. (laughs) Interviewer: (laughs) That’s Sasuke’s problem now. Kishimoto: (laughs) Yeah you’re right. Interviewer: (laughs) He deals with it by not being home. (everybody laughs)
Is it surprising Sasuke does not want to be around Sakura? He looks miserable and uncomfortable around her in Gaiden, while he is smiling and looks relaxed around Naruto in Boruto movie, both written by Kishi. And Sakura looks tired the whole manga and like she has resigned to her fate, she knows things aren’t completely okay but she would rather possess Sasuke in any way she can. Because her love is toxic.

Naruto has a good heart
So many people misunderstand Naruto's character. Let's look at some of the absurd claims;
"Naruto only wanted his face on the mountain, he wants people to worship him, his goal is selfish"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Naruto made this goal for himself, he was younger than 12. As an orphan child who is ostracized from society, this was his way of trying to become liked, so he could become part of the society. Aside from hermits, most humans desire connections with other humans. It's normal. And Naruto being a child sees that the Hokage is someone who people approve, and becoming Hokage would be a sure way to have such connections. It makes sense for a child to rationalize it this way. People completely forget the context, many other characters also desired connections such as Haku, Kimimaro, Gaara etc. It's a common theme in the manga. Kishimoto wrote neglected children very believably. So to write this off as "Naruto just wants people to worship him like he's God, what a narcissist" is dishonest and poor reading comprehension.
Not to mention, Naruto's mentality changed pretty fast, and he wanted to become someone who saves and protects people, someone people could rely on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Already in the first arc he had that desire to help others. He's always been a good boy. Eventhough Naruto was pissed off at Inari's comments and wanted to tell him off, he realized there's a deeper reason for Inari's cynicism. So he decided to help him instead of starting a fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Part 2, Naruto's responsibilities grow massively, especially after the Pain arc. In the end, everyone ends up putting all the burdens on Naruto's shoulders. Everyone expects Naruto to protect them and basically do all the impossible things.
His goal to become a Hokage started out as a need for acknowledgement, yes. But his transformed drive to become Hokage and bear all the responsibility in Part 2 came from his need to fulfill everyone's expectations for him and also him thinking he owes to the people who support him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not that Naruto never had any resentment for how everyone treated him. He just repressed it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the end, he put it all aside, in order to become the hero for everyone. No I don't think it's entirely healthy. But it's not selfish that's for sure.
"Naruto is shallow, selfish etc."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naruto was always grateful for the connections he was able to make and treasured them heavily. His relationship with Gaara gives even more insight to that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naruto acknowledges Gaara was alone for longer than him. How can you call him a narcissist? Naruto is shown to be upset at the fact Gaara was viewed as an undesirable and a tool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He always had genuine empathy and care for others. To claim otherwise is just bizarre. He blames himself too a lot of times. Then there's his relationship with Sasuke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike certain Naruto stans who hate Sasuke, Naruto himself has enough empathy and humility to consider he could have ended up the same as Sasuke, if some things would have been slightly different.
A lot of people also complain about the way Naruto behaved in Vote1, eventhough that was Kishimoto's plan, Naruto was supposed to not understand Sasuke fully at that point (and still his behavior was understandable, considering Orochimaru is a predator who wanted to wear Sasuke's skin). Naruto himself acknowledges he didn't. Naruto always tried to use his own experiences to understand the world and others better.
"Naruto just projects onto people because he wants to talk about himself"
Actually no. Pain and Obito both projected onto him first, and told him they were similar, which is also why Obito wanted to convince Naruto to join him. Naruto responding to them and trying to show he understands them to a degree is not a crime. It's basic empathy. I don't think I will even bother explaining it further than this.
My point is, Naruto is a good boy/man. There's no need to twist him into a narcissistic sociopath just because you don't personally like him.

Itachi: I’ll murder our clan and have you avenge it
Sasuke: Yes, nii-san
Itachi: By the way, I’m going to torture you over it, since you’ll never kill me if I don’t
Sasuke: Yes, nii-san
Itachi: … Twice
Sasuke: *aggravated sigh* As you say, nii-san
Itachi: *Infamous head-poke* Good. Now this is settled, I’ll go after Naruto
Sasuke: Over my dead body, you mother-killer
i complain alot about fanon narusasu especially in fics where they get their characterization so twisted but honestly. itachi and sasuke’s relationship in fanon is so baffling i cant even take it seriously. like why so many modern aus will have sasuke hating itachi while itachi is this perfect compassionate brother who always gives the best advice as if their relationship isnt itachi being a control freak over sasuke’s life while sasuke unfortunately having to suffer that, still doesn’t hate itachi despite having reasons to. if anyone is too much of a good brother its sasuke??

In the same vein, I’ve seen people portray Sasuke as a school bully when, in fact, Naruto was the one who kept harassing him for no apparent reason (envy). Everyone noticed, even Sasuke, who was quite patient with him given that Naruto even abducted and tied him up at some point…
Naruto does start as a wild fox capable of destroying Konoha, and learns to accept his own pain and rage to tame it, while Sasuke starts as a kind boy willing to keep order in Konoha by joining its police force, but learns to rebel against unfair rules.
They reconcile when they both agree to disagree, while still supporting the other and learning from them rather than choosing a definitive side.
i feel that so many people seem to take the basis of naruto and sasukes characterization and switch them…. i see too many people infer naruto is made of happiness and love while sasuke of hate and anger but i have always seen naruto as a character that is full of hatred and anger and he has to let go of that with the love of others. sasuke as a character is so full of love yet he has to follow that through with grief and anger and learn to bear others hatred.
naruto never really had the heaviness of love in his heart until he went through the process of controlling kuramas chakra and had to confront the hatred inside him. frankly it says it blatantly that he had always held hatred in his heart for the situation he was forced into and the way the village treated him because of it, until he was able to accept and move past that hatred and have love for kurama and his dad and the people of his village. so i genuinely don’t understand where this notion that naruto is just pure sunshine and happiness came from. sasukes whole story starts out with wanting revenge on his brother because he loves his family and his clan so much. it’s a constant clear notion that he hurts so bad from his brother’s betrayal because he loved his brother, and that his rage against konoha is because he loved his clan that konoha sanctioned a genocide of. it’s constantly stated that the uchiha hold intense love in their hearts.
it’s sasukes connection with the people around him that formed his love where it’s the lack of that connection that formed narutos hate…. the way they expressed their emotions is very different because they’re both in insanely different scenarios no matter how much they understand the others pain. narutos hatred makes him want to finally receive the love that the village never gave him, but sasukes love makes him want the village to experience the pain that they inflicted upon him and his clan… maybe sasuke expresses his love more negatively and maybe naruto expresses his hate more positively, but that doesn’t change the fact that sasukes actions came from a place of love and narutos actions came from hate. they just needed each other to balance the other out….
