Before I started watching Star Trek Discovery, the number one thing I heard people dunking on was the spore drive, and the mycelium network.
Before I ever knew anything about Discovery, I had watched a lot of documentaries on, and read a fare bit of fungi related materials. Within the material appeared the real Paul Stamets (mycologist), and I was very interested in everything I was seeing. More specifically the science of it all, while the medical properties of such is wait and see.
Needless to say, when the spore drive and the mycelium network showed up in Star Trek, I thought it was one of the coolest things Star Trek has ever done. I still do. I don't give a shit what anyone else has to say about it, it's an amazing piece of science fiction to me. And I won't defend it, because there is no need to defend harmless fiction you enjoy.
You're fine with subspace, but think the mycelium network in space is unrealistic? Make it make sense.

falls down the stairs as I’m talking AND ANOTHER THING, how FUCKED is it that the only people we see the Vorta regularly or EVER come into contact with in the Dominion are Jem’Hadar, a species that lives like 15 years if they’re LUCKY and you’re gonna TELL ME theres not for a REASON youre gonna teLL ME the founders didnt do that on purpose they didnt make the vorta basically immortal and give them, as their only social interaction, a species that LIVES LIKE A DECADE… there is a reason. there is a reason for this. the. the layers this has. the manipulation. indescribable how fucked up they are and the ds9 writers simply?? didnt notice what they were doing??? did they not see what they did?? because where is the resolution where is the acknowledgement I will gnaw off my right foot for just one ds9 guy to say yeah. the vorta and jemhadar are victims of a cult. duh. sorry we never resolved it but yknow. budget cuts. :/ or SOMETHING… anything. pls guys look what you’ve done to them. look what youve wrought.

I’m imagining a scenario in which Boimler meets Worf and introduces himself as Ensign Boimler, and Worf says he recognizes him and Boims gets excited for a second until Worf explains that he recognizes the name Boimler from the brand of prune juice that comes from Bradward’s family’s vineyard.

These two really are two opposite sides of the same coin
They are both hybrids of human and the opposite of human, trying to reconcile these two incompatible parts of themselves, while living among humans and trying to fit in... which means suppressing the non-human part of themselves that is considered "undesirable"
But they're at opposite ends of the same spectrum, because what could be more different than a Borg than a Klingon is??
And if you think about the other aliens on the ship... Tuvok, Neelix and Kes don't need to act "more human" to be able to function as part of the crew, but Seven and B'Elanna do. A full Borg or a full Klingon wouldn't be able to be a part of the crew. They are fundamentally incompatible with Starfleet.
Even Worf, who is full Klingon, was raised by humans, and that was the only reason he could be a Starfleet officer. A Klingon warrior could not. A Borg drone could not.
Seven and B'Elanna very much face the same identity struggle, just on opposite ends of the spectrum.
The only real difference is that B'Elanna has been trying to suppress her Klingon side her entire life. Seven isn't really motivated to suppress her Borg side, she just doesn't have a choice.

again journeys end really dropped the ball by not mentioning first duty. because they’re trying to write wesley like he’s just grown up now and is acting a bit angsty. but you cant do that narrative when the last time we saw him was after first duty and the horrible trauma of letting his teammate die and losing everything at the academy. you cannot look me in the eyes and say ohh journeys end is just wesley being edgy for no reason. THERES A REASON!!! there are so many reasons. it’s a whole different story when you take that into consideration. and you know they didn’t forget about nova squadron because we brought it up 5 episodes earlier with sito jaxas death which might have. you know also. maybe. have had a negative impact on wesley. there’s a huge difference in saying wesley is depressed and becoming remote and defensive and withdrawn because he’s “going through a phase” when actually two of his only friends died horribly which he was incredibly torn up about and he stopped caring about the singular good thing he had in life (starfleet). like the implications are really bad guys! it’s bad!!!

me explaining to my dad how the new star trek show writing the gorn off as a purely evil species with an innate want for violence and no possibility of communicating with them goes against what star trek's all about

Can I just say I love Julian’s little “my bestie needs help so im gonna point this out” speech when miles tries to build keiko an arboretum after the school closes and so Julian says “you can’t turn her career into a hobby, how would you feel if someone asked you to do that?”
10/10 for Julian and the writers drinking respect women juice right there

Kind of surprised Star Trek has never done an "ET in reverse" premise where one of the crew gets stranded on a pre-warp planet with no universal translator and local kids need to hide them. Seems like the kind of plot that they could have used Data for.

do you ever just.. think about how the kids playing that floor pie game with the Protostar's transporters is likely some of the first healthy enrichment fun they've ever had.
do you ever think about how Zero loving mystery holonovels is probably the first time in years they've ever genuinely played, like a kid should.
do you ever think how Rok enjoying that cutesy animal nursing holo is probably her first ever experience playing with something like a toy.
Do you ever just think about how whenever we see the Protostar kids acting like actual kids, that it's quite possibly some of the only times in their entire lives they've ever gotten to actually do that. To act like the kids they are.
do you ever think about that.

So…that’s a Naruto run.
Kayshon has been picking up on things from his human colleagues, evidently.
Look at him go!

Something about seeing little nerdy academy Mariner makes who Mariner's friends are now make so much sense. There clearly are other badass fighters on the ship that she could befriend, but Mariner chooses to hang out with a bunch of soft squishy nerds (I mean Tendi isn't all that soft and squishy but she would like to be) and protects them in every way that she can.
The thing that keeps Mariner in Starfleet is surrounding herself with people who exemplify it's ideals. People who remind her of who she was when she first joined the Academy.
She clearly feels that it's her job to buffer all of them from the harsh realities of working for a pseudo-navy that she lived through, and that's part of what makes everyone coming together to protect her during the final so touching.

considering symbolism behind Janeway's hairstyles and hmm... her wearing the bun of steel for so long because it was the epitome of professionalism and there was a clear delineation between "Captain Janeway" – at work with bun present – and "Kathryn Janeway" – off duty with hair down – still making a semblance of division between her and her role. cutting her hair off in Year of Hell is a symbol that she can no longer maintain that distinction and must act as Captain all the time rather than just another person and Year of Hell.... is sure an episode to do that in.

People who recommend you start with ds9 are so... what are you talking about? Like, yes, it is the best one, but it's good precisely because it deconstructs the story as it has been presented to us in tos and (mostly) tng. It's not like you can't watch it without watching those first, but it loses so much of it's impact if you don't come in already believing in the story of the Federation as a utopia. Why are you trying to undercut your own fave like that, bro?

It's insane that no one talks about how the same guy who invented 3d chess for star trek also invented the rubber duck. Like THE rubber duck. They don't even mention it on memory alpha. Like I feel like that should be common trekkie knowledge anD YET!

One of the things I'll miss most about discovery once it's gone is the Incredible 'i am so Done with this shit' faces that Michael makes. SMG truly makes them an art form.

still losing my mind at Discovery making an episode that was basically the lovechild of "Shattered" and "Relativity" and throwing in references to "Year of Hell" for good measure. The were right to do it because they're the best Voyager time-travel episodes but also, holy shit
