       Nothing strange ever happened in Hawkins. Even cycling through the woods from school back to her house, as was her route every day since the start of middle school, was so uneventful that the worst thing she could imagine stumbling across was a bear — and that had never happened in Roane County. But Robin had heard about the Byers boy going missing a few days ago — his brother Jonathan had been putting up posters all over school, and she could only imagine how angry her mom would be with her for taking this route home — and now maybe, face to face as she was with an unfamiliar girl, wearing a hospital gown with a spaced out look in her eyes, she had to concede that maybe, this November, her comprehensive assessment of Hawkins as a tiny speck of nothing, lost in the Indiana wilderness... was no longer quite true.

       Robin nearly stumbled back as the girl's finger pressed between her eyes. She blinked. “ OK, uh...” Her brain was struggling to comprehend what she meant by in there. “ Seeing as I haven't yet mastered the language of telepathy, I could... take you back to my house? ” It sounded like a terrible idea even as she said it. How was she going to sneak another fully grown teenager into her bedroom? “ There's a phone. You can use it to call your parents? Tell them where you are? ”

i won't judge you. i just need to know what happened. ( from robin! )

alice is a very smart girl. she's been told, it's been brought out of her with needles and prodding and hurting, so much hurting. she doesn't trust people. she doesn't trust anyone. big glassy eyes stare at the girl, robin, robin like the bird. she says, i won't judge you. and she doesn't seem like the type to, in the sense that alice knows the judges of the world and robin doesn't fit there. and she asks, what happened? and what happened. the fire. the fire happened, and the thinkering, the prodding. the hurting. she swallows, doesn't remember the last time someone, anyone, someone else, talked to her.

alice clears her throat. speak alice! use your outside voice, the one you do not recognize. need. such a curious word to use, isn't it? for me to tell you, what happened, well, i need to trust you. bracing for the fall, thinks alice. and she does that much better, thinking rather than talking. "not here." she says plainly, because it is never safe. outside, he can hear her. on the outside. "-we need to talk somewhere else." eyes piercing, when she lifts her hand, index finger pressing in between robin's eyebrows, "-in here." she states.

okay so it took only one set pic of gaten for me to want to launch into a lengthy meta but here we go lmaooooo. i'm not tagging this post as spoilers but you can find them below the cut !

right so to preface, this is purely based on this set photo that has popped up in recent days, along with the official first pic of gaten here. obviously i will be theorising a lot here ( and i do really enjoy theorising and seeing whether i end up being correct or not ) but what these pics concretely tell us: in the first pic dustin is seen in front of eddie's grave. eddie's grave has been defaced, dustin has grown his hair out to look a lot like eddie, he's wearing his hellfire shirt ( which is ripped... we don't know yet what has caused this ), he's wearing rings ( eddie's rings ? ), he's pulling the exact face eddie pulled in s4 in the official pic which i'm sure is not a coincidence. basically, we are putting together a picture here that dustin has not only been affected a lot by eddie's death, as i'm sure we all expected, but also that he is now trying to become a lot like him. we obviously don't know whether dustin has begun to imitate eddie's behaviour yet, but appearance wise it's fairly obvious lmao.

now, as another preface: i don't necessarily think that imitating an older role model is a bad thing. dustin has been influenced by steve in the last few seasons and that has had a noticeable impact on him and his character since s2 ( i.e. continuing the use the farrah fawcett hairspray, dustin becoming more confident in himself etc etc. they're subtle signs, but they're there ). but i will say that under these specific circumstances, dustin looking like eddie here is a big red flag for me because it's tied in with eddie's death and therefore seems to me like a trauma response.

if it's not bad enough that dustin will no doubt feel a lot of survivor's guilt over eddie's death, eddie is also ( very clearly from the graffiti ) still considered a murderer and the cause for all of hawkins' woes ( assuming that the hellscape depiction at the end of s4 still stands; obviously we don't quite know yet what the time skip will be between s4 and s5, people are speculating s5 will take place in '87 or even '88. so this could be nearly two years on from eddie's death and his name is still tarnished in the town ). dustin therefore has the added weight of knowing the true eddie and no doubt wanting to clear his name. i can see that being dustin's major motivation going forward, and probably a part of the reason why he is still wearing the hellfire shirt and why he's grown his hair long and has modelled his appearance on him. partly out of resistance against those voices who still blame eddie, and partly out of his own sense that he's continuing eddie's legacy or memory by imitating him in this way.

so my tl;dr; here is that i don't think dustin being super inspired by/almost "becoming" eddie in st5 is a good thing, and i am nervous about whether the writers/the duffers are going to properly delve into dustin's psychology in why he is acting this way, or whether they have just decided that since eddie isn't going to be in st5, they need the next best thing ( someone who acts like eddie ). which also just makes me wonder why tf they didn't keep eddie alive in the first place. but y'know. this is what they're doing.

so let's be honest, i'm gonna complain no matter how st5 goes, however if there's one simple thing i request ( considering that hawkins is presumably now a hellscape and the army have moved in ) it's to not continue pretending like robin & steve's parents don't exist

       Robin was just about to spare Sarah a reprimanding glance ( one that would probably remind her way too much of her mom if she'd looked in the mirror at that moment ), but she was spared from having to question her so called "big breakfast" when the other girl looked down at her tray and then across to her again. “ It's fine, take it. I promise I haven't taken a bite out of it yet. There are no germs or anything. ” She looked genuinely grateful for the alternative to her cafeteria mac n cheese special, and Robin smiled again. Sarah seemed nice. How had she not even found a chance to talk to her before? It seemed she'd been missing out.

       At the compliment, that smile quickly turned into a laugh. “ Yeah...? I mean it's only PB&J, but I make a mean PB&J sandwich, OK. ” She was mostly joking; Robin didn't know if Sarah was just paying her a compliment simply as a thank you for the free food, but there had been no finesse or technique in the way she'd cobbled her sandwich together this morning while Steve waited impatiently in the doorway to drive her to school. “ I could probably enter, like, the championship PB&J sandwich making contest if I wasn't so busy playing the trumpet and trying to passing that super hard biology class, you know. ”

    ROBIN LAUGHS JUST A LITTLE,  &  sarah can’t help but notice the way a few small creases appear across the bridge of her nose with the expression.  all at once, the sour look on her own face brought on by the unappetizing display at the other end of the table has all but melted away, the other girl’s smile contagious.  ❝ can’t blame them when it’s the only option, i guess.  but i personally think we deserve just a little bit better. ❞  given her lunch bag, it seems that robin had wisely thought ahead to spare herself the indignity of today’s cafeteria fare, choosing instead to bring something from home.  &  sarah is just making a mental note to herself to make a sandwich for herself before leaving the house next thursday, when robin offers one of her own.

❝ oh.  um, i’m ok.  i had a big breakfast, ❞  sarah protests, but her stomach chooses that moment to loudly disagree.  &  when she glances back down at her tray, she knows that the sticky orange glob of already congealing pasta just isn’t going to cut it.   ❝ i mean, unless you really don’t want it. ❞  &  as she accepts the generous offering, pushing her tray aside in favor of unwrapping a ham sandwich, sarah finds herself wondering why she hasn’t really hung out with robin before now.  ❝ thanks — this is like, really nice of you. ❞   to not only remember to bring your own lunch on mac-n-cheese day, but also to be willing to offer half of it to someone who hadn’t, robin must be both smart  &  kind  —  a combination which was a real rarity amongst the students of hawkins high.  thoughtfully, sarah takes a bite of the sandwich,  &  as she chews, her eyes go wide.   ❝ oh my god, this is amazing, ❞  she says even before her mouth is empty, one hand raising as if to cover her bad manners.  ❝ did you make this ? ❞

This was also why Dustin was trying to be encouraging, instead of too harshly critical, of the only idea he'd had so far for his character. “ You do realise that as a paladin you'll mostly be wearing a helmet though, right? So nobody will see your hair? ” He had to at least point it out. “ And paladins are holy warriors sworn to uphold their oath and protect the innocent. Vanity is... really not their thing. ”

       It was so weird, to be walking up to Chrissy Cunningham's house after all time, dropped off by Steve Harrington before he headed off to his late shift at Family Video. She had her best suit on — one of her dad's old ones to be specific, that he'd let her keep and she'd altered with her mom's begrudging help to better fit her. Why don't you ever wear a dress, Robin? she'd always ask, and Robin would always reply They're too uncomfortable, mom. As a kid she'd had little choice when her mom had put her in a dress — like on the first day of kindergarten, or the end of year band recital in fourth grade. But they'd always felt wrong on her even then.

       She hesitated as she reached Chrissy's front door, hand hovering over the doorbell. Steve had joked that she ought to sneak round the back and climb in through her bedroom window, if this was the date he was proclaiming it to be — but Robin wasn't nearly daring enough to try that. She shouldn't even be this nervous: this was just her coming over as a friend to help Chrissy pick out her clothes for tonight. So she pressed the buzzer and waited, taking a deep breath.

it's easier to breath. the change of pace, the change of people, it does wonders to someone. but it doesn't fix everything. and chrissy feels the overwhelming insecurity that seems to plague her thoughts. thinking that being in the spotlight for so long would've fixed something. she is glad robin is here, she had gotten all overwhelmed, close to crying and that might be the last thing she wants to happen.

chrissy lights up when robin agrees to come help her. she wouldn't want robin to feel pressured to do anything but. this is different. it would do both of them to spend more time together, at least that is what chrissy thinks. "that's fine, i can do dresses for the both of us." suddenly the night doesn't look so scary. suddenly it seems like she could have a good time. "-oh but thank you, i promise i'll make it fun." chrissy hates to disappoint. half of the day has already come and go. "i can see you at my place like later, and like seriously thank you." she doesn't know how else to express her gratitude but it immediately excites her, she's missed feeling normal.

       Daylight was streaming in through the small window in their studio, but Robin had learned weeks ago that the usual passage of time meant nothing now. The sun being in the sky had always been a sign that they needed to head to bed, getting as many hours of sleep in before they headed back over to Staten Island for another night of trailing a vampire coven around in search of yet more footage that would end up on the cutting room floor. That was what had been keeping them up well past dawn lately — Steve had even headed off to work today and they were still awake — and, as Robin crossed the room to hand Jeremy a bowl of ramen, it didn't look like anything had improved in the ten minutes it had taken her to shove this into the microwave.

       She arched a brow at the screen. Sometimes she had to remind herself that exposure to the likes of Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja had desensitised her too all kinds of things that would shock others — and get them swiftly taken off the air. “ They do say there's a kink out there for everyone. ” Still, joking or not, Robin didn't want to give up that easily. Staring blearily at the computer screen, she ate a spoonful of her own ramen. “ I really think we need to focus on the mundane. The things that make them just like us. Not only will that keep us in the good books of the TV execs, but it'll also make the three of them easier to like, you know? It's a documentary, but we still have the power to push a particular narrative. ” She shared a look with Jeremy. “ They do it all the time with true crime documentaries. ”
