what really gets me about columbia threatening to sic the national fucking guard on protesting students is like. literally Last Semester there was a scandal where UCF's official athletics dept twitter posted, in response to beating kent state in a football game, "SOMEONE CALL THE NATIONAL GUARD". and the university had to apologize for that because obviously it was unbelievably insensitive... whereas now it's just. Fine. for columbia to literally do that exact thing to its own students for protesting the palestinian genocide.
nothing has made me feel the passage of time like coming to fob fandom at 30 and realizing that a lot of people are now too young to remember just how much the alt/emo/etc whatever look was gender nonconforming in the early/mid 00s lol. I only heard skinny jeans referred to as girl jeans for yeears and that was about boys in my high school who were wearing them never mind what people I knew personally and what the culture at large was saying about boys in bands who wore 'girl jeans' and straightened their hair and wore eyeliner. Which turned into 'guyliner' specifically to try and avoid the gender bending slant of it all! Idk if I'm expressing myself well but tl;dr your tags about needing to view pw 00s fashion and gender thru an 00s lens is IT
literally nodding along to everything that you're mentioning here — i think it's so strange when people try to diminish or express that this kind of look was "normalized" amongst people in the 2000s like...no?? lol. a specific subsect of people were into this kind of look and there is something to be said about how pete DID help to popularize and was one of the celebrities who made the kind of quintessential emo/alt/punk look more mainstream but it def is like............ um. idk man, most guys would have got a LOT of flack for dressing like that at least in the area where i grew up and im from a fairly liberal area of chicago! like you said, i remember seeing a vid recently detailing how the emo/alt/etc look was one of, if not THE, designated look for gender nonconforming people and it's just a bit dissonant to see something like this not considered when people want to talk about the intersection of gender and fashion, particularly with pete.
the essays i could write about how pete has always pushed the envelope of gender presentation with regards to his fashion sense and how that gets ignored or swept under the rug or mocked because people think his fashion sense is ugly or cringe… like regardless of how you feel about his aesthetic you have to admit that out of his peers he has almost always been most often playing in the intersection between fashion and traditional gender presentation. the skirts aren’t new. even the eyeliner and (women’s) skinny jeans existed as a similar symbol back in the day
when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes
