Since I’m involved in drawing things in exchange for Project for Awesome pledges, I though I’d share some things I’ve done so people know that I can do more than throw paint at a piece of paper(even though that’s super fun)

Give me something to do at work while I wait for giant CAD drawings to load! I’ll draw, or at least attempt, anything I can do with pencil, ink, pastel, and/or watercolor.

This year for the Project for Awesome, a bunch of creative Tumblr people including myself are offering to do requests for art, writing, or songs in exchange for pledges to donate to the P4A. A few of us did this last year and it was a really popular idea! The people participating are listed below along with what types of requests they are taking.  

To submit a request, send them a message like “I’ll donate $10 to the P4A if you draw a puppy-sized elephant eating pizza” with any amount of money and whatever you’re requesting. If they post what you requested, then you donate (I’ll update the donation link when donations open). I’ll be tagging my request posts with #P4A Requests and I encourage the other posters to do the same.

Basically what I did last year and what I’ll do this year is that I’ll write articles about the animals of someone’s choosing. I keep ADAD to dinosaurs only (so descendants of the most recent common ancestor of Megalosaurus & Iguanodon, which includes birds); but for P4A I offer to do entries about any organism someone might choose - such as other extinct animals (pterosaurs, plesiosaurs, et cetera) or animals alive today which aren’t birds (like mammals, other reptiles, et cetera).

Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.

These are the names of the 14 women who were killed on this day, 26 years ago, at École Polytechnique because they dared to be educated and trained as Engineers.

They lost their lives because a fragile man, whose name deserves no mention, couldn’t dare think that women deserved to be Engineers. He viewed Engineering as the realm of men, and men alone.

He was wrong.

Many of us in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics community take time today, December 6th, to remember what happened and reflect on the work which is still required to be more inclusive for women in these fields - in all professions, really.

I say it each year: To the women currently studying and working in STEM fields. You belong here. Some days you may not feel you do. Some days your colleagues and coworkers can make the school or work environment feel toxic. It is every bit your right to be working in these fields which you love and find interesting. You are every bit as qualified and gifted. It is a better world because you persevere.

One Of The World’s Last Remaining Globe-Makers That Use The Ancient Art Of Making Globes By Hand

In the modern age, with the advent of GPS in addition to the abundance of mass-produced globes and maps, the art of globe making has fallen by the wayside. Only two workshops in the world still make handcrafted globes; one of them is us….. Bellerby & Co. Globemakers, a studio based in Stoke Newington, London.

Founded by Peter Bellerby in 2008, the artisan studio was born when Bellerby struggled to find a quality globe for his father’s 80th birthday present. Faced with a choice between a cheaply made modern globes or a fragile, expensive antique model, Bellerby decided to spend a few months and a few thousand pounds making his own, instead. The process turned out to be more complicated, costly, and time-intensive than he thought, eventually leading to the creation of his own globe-making studio.

Now, we have a small team of dedicated Globe-makers constructing high-quality, handmade, artisan globes that are as much works of art as they are scientific instruments. From the stand, to the painting, to the mapmaking, each piece is expertly crafted in-house using traditional and modern globe-making techniques.

Calling all Nerdfighter artists!

The Nerdfighter Art perk is going to be a thing again!

This year, the Project for Awesome will be taking place December 11-12.

We, as always, will be raising money to give to charities. However, some people have more time and talent to give than money (you know who you are) so we’d like to recruit you to provide creations for reward tiers in our Indiegogo campaign. You create the artwork and it will be and sent to a fellow nerdfighter who claims the perk!

Ideally, you will be making 15+ items and you will be shipping them to Missoula, Montana to be distributed to the people who claimed the Nerdfighter Art Perk!

We’re looking for small, easily shipped items. This can include jewelry, knitwear, small plushies, small drawings and paintings, digital art prints, etc. Nothing super-big or super-fragile.

The pieces of art do not need to be nerdfighter-themed but it is highly encouraged!

The estimated worth of the art should be about $25-30 because the perk will be sold for $40. That’s not a strict amount, just keep it in mind when making your proposals!

If you’re interested, please email [email protected] by November 4th with an example of what you have/will be creating and what quantity. A picture of it for us to see would be extra helpful when sorting through everyone’s submissions!

We will let you know if it’s reasonable and provide additional information as soon as we can after that, giving you about a month to create your pieces.

We’re very excited to see the awesome things y’all create!
