one of my friends described us as having been put through the “gender blender” which I find eerily appropriate and also kind of funny terminology. have y’all heard this phrasing before?

As someone who grew up living under a rock in the early 2000s and was completely lost on what hip-hop and rap was good until earlier this year I would absolutely support a crash course playlist
Best listened to on shuffle. Very NSFW, including some lyrics from A Different Time. Tried to focus on the essentials and then a few noteworthy personal favorites. Look below the cut for some commentary on what’s what ⬇️

*this playlist is subject to change, and since it’s original posting has already been edited to add Beastie Boys, Salt N Pepa, and MF DOOM

I’m going to memorize some poems this summer, I think. A student came up to me in the library and asked to interview me. Poetry came up and we shared our favorite poets—I said Naomi Shihab Nye and Forugh Farrokhzad, and the student said it was a little basic but they liked Edgar Allan Poe. I was like “woah! The first poem I ever memorized was by Edgar Allan Poe” and then I recited the first two lines of “The Lake.” It was such a nice experience and I remembered how much I enjoy reciting poetry. So I will be memorizing some poems this summer and will share my progress.
My thoughts so far:
“The Lake” by Edgar Allan Poe (I need to touch up)
“Think of Others” by Mahmoud Darwish
“Kindness” by Naomi Shihab Nye
“To You” by Frank O’Hara
“Suicide of the Refugee W.B” by Bertolt Brecht
“What Resembles the Grave but Isn’t” by Anne Boyer
“Making a Fist” by Naomi Shihab Nye
“To a Stranger” by Walt Whitman
“Mayakovsky” by Frank O’Hara
“Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver
“Shedding Skin” by Harryette Mullen
“Letter to N.Y” by Elizabeth Bishop
“What it Comes to Mean” by Bronwen Wallace
“The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver
“A Litany for Survival” by Audre Lorde
“The Quiet World” by Jeffrey McDaniel
Any poem suggestions? Anyone else interested in memorizing poems?

Huge shout to my friend from an undergraduate philosophy program who started working out every single day, not for health benefits or to become conventionally attractive or whatever, but because -- and this is a direct quote -- he was concerned that otherwise he might "become lost in the world of signs and forget the things they signify". I have thought about this every single time that I've worked out since.
