HI YES I see many people have already provided suggestions, but I'd like to add that a lot depends on what you're looking for (accuracy to the original? easy to read? sounds like epic poetry? etc.), which is obviously going to vary A LOT from one translation to the next. There have been loads of translations of the Iliad into English since the 17th century, of varying quality, and a decent amount of translations into French as well. As someone who owns over a dozen different translations of the Iliad, and has read dozens more, I'd second the recommendation of Fagles and Alexander. For French I would recommend either Victor Bérard or Paul Mazon.
Also, some small self-promotion: I have a list of all the different translations of Homer that I've read and reviewed (as well as various other discussions and comparisons), if you would like to do some more specific research into which translation(s) is best for you.
Let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer!
does anyone here have a good translation of the Iliad to recommend, either in french or english?

FMA translation:
Javert smiled and advanced into the open space that the Thénardiess had staked out with her eyes.
"Don't come any nearer! Get away," she cried, "or I'll crush you!"
"What a grenadier!" said Javert. "Mother, you have a beard like a man but claws like a woman."
And he kept walking toward her.
Original:
Javert sourit et s’avança dans l’espace vide que la Thénardier couvait de ses deux prunelles.
– N’approche pas, va-t’en, cria-t-elle, ou je t’écroule !
– Quel grenadier ! fit Javert ; la mère ! tu as de la barbe comme un homme, mais j’ai des griffes comme une femme.
Et il continua de s’avancer.
Very weird mistranslation!
There's a moment in the Brick where Javert says "I have the claws of a woman" but in the Fahnestock/MacAfee translation the line is incorrectly MIStranslated as "you have the claws of a woman."
And when I think about that translation choice my brain goes "I can't believe the translators Declawed their Javert...that's just irresponsible Javert ownership... if your Javert keeps ripping up your curtains you need to provide him with more Enrichment bc declawing is never the answer"

ok an actual french speaker, explain the pronunciation of Enjolras to me. Because - listen, I’m Canadian, I minored in French language in university, my accent is pretty good, I’m like - conversational, okay, my french is pretty mediocre but I do speak the language.
I was always taught that most ‘s’es on the ends of words don’t get pronounced except when bridging with a word that starts with a vowel. so why is this name an exception? because I’ve heard that audiobook clip in official actual french and they say it with the S and that seems so weird to me? with the education I do have?
like I’m genuinely asking I??? it goes against the rules I was taught and I’d love to know why.

Dreamt that calling things “avuncular” was the new slang. Shimmering with possibilities, this word.

“yeah, i study ancient rome,” i say as i scroll through a list of roman emperors. i linger over one, scrutinizing his face; after a moment, i nod and mark him down on the “pretty hot” list. “i guess you could say i know a few things about it.” i show said emperor to my friend, who nods in approval. “my colleagues agree that i make valuable contributions to the field after all.”

#no one else was there #they were all arrested the previous week #we didn't see it because it wasn't relevant to Marius' journey
It’s disproportionately funny to me how Gavroche is the only character in Les Mis who’s explicitly stated to have taken part in the July Revolution
