Nonbinary Presentation Flags: 

Stag: 

Red represents NB responses to and variations on cultural concepts of masculinity, as interpreted and queered by nonbinary individuals; as well as rejection of the idea that these aesthetics are tied to binary gender. It also represents the firm assertion that any “masculine” aspects of stag presentation are self-asserted and self-affirming and not related to being “read” as “masculine”. Red represents rejection of the pressure to present to binary eyes.   

Gold represents NB identity itself.

Burgundy represents NB boldness, strength, and bravado, independent of any notions of masculinity. 

Fox:

Green represents NB responses to and variations on cultural concepts of androgyny, as interpreted and queered by nonbinary individuals, as well as NB fluidity and genderfucking; it also represents the firm assertion that any androgyny presented by a fox is self-asserted and self-affirming and not related to being “read” as “androgynous”. Green represents rejection of the pressure to present to binary eyes.      

Gold represents NB identity itself.

Orange represents NB rebellion, transformation, and independence, independent of any notions of androgyny.

Swan: 

Light blue represents NB responses to and variations on cultural concepts of femininity, as interpreted and queered by nonbinary individuals; as well as rejection of the idea that these aesthetics are tied to binary gender. It also represents the firm assertion that any "feminine” aspects of swan presentation are self-asserted and self-affirming and not related to being “read” as “feminine”. Light blue represents rejection of the pressure to present to binary eyes.

Cream represents NB beauty, softness, and grace, independent of any notions of femininity.

Non-binary Presentation Terms

Although words like butch, femme, masc, and fem have been applied to nonbinary folk since their inception, they don’t always meet the needs of non-binary people in comfortably describing the way we look. 

So here are a new additional set of options! We’ve considered two different “axes” here – one that relates most closely to the masc—fem scale, and one that considers “effort”, or a level of… drama or ostentation in a look. They can be combined as one pleases or used individually! 

Additionally, please apply them at will to yourself based on your own ideas about what it means to dress femininely or dramatically or androgynously etc. These words are not to be held hostage to cissexism or gender roles. These words also describe presentations that are inherently not binary – the only reason we’re using words like “masculine” and “feminine” to describe them at all is for ease of communication. They can and should describe particular looks, including those that people are inclined to gender, without actually gendering them. 

Note: These are not coined with the intention of being gender identities. They have nothing inherently to do with gender identity. You can be a demigirl stag, etc. (That said, if someone wants to use them as a gender because you feel it’s tied closely to your presentation, we’re certainly not stopping you.) 

Here they are!

Stag: A “masc”, “butch” or “tomcat” equivalent, describing a presentation one considers to be associated with ideas about masculinity, or a presentation others might consider masculine. 

Fox: Describing an androgynous, fluid, or combined presentation; can be applied to any presentation a person feels doesn’t resemble the other sides of the spectrum.  

Swan: A “femme/fem” or “doe” equivalent, describing a presentation one considers to be associated with ideas about femininity, or a presentation others might consider feminine. 

Sparrow: A casual, minimalist, muted or low-effort presentation. For example, for those folks who just roll through their closet and go. 

Crow: For presentations that are in-between, combined, or fluid along a scale of effort/ostentation. 

Peacock: For presentations that are high effort. Glam, dramatic, flashy, flamboyant, attention-drawing, etc. Dressed to the nines, so to speak!

why stag?

what are stag/fox/swan?

in 2017, tumblr user marlowelune outlined a three-way system of nonbinary presentation labels, named after animals, in this post [link]. (they also provided a separate axis of ostentation or drama in presentation, but we’re focused on the first three labels for now.) the terms were further expanded on by tumblr user nonbinary-culture, including flags and more formal definitions [link]. the three proposed terms were stag, fox, and swan. what do they mean?

stag is a gender presentation interpreting masculinity through a nonbinary lense, without necessarily conforming to cis concepts of maleness or masculinity. it taps into concepts and expressions of nonbinary strength, courage, and boldness.

fox is a gender presentation interpreting androgyny, fluidity, or mixed presentation through a nonbinary lense, without necessarily conforming to cis concepts of these terms’ definition. it taps into concepts and expressions of nonbinary rebellion, transformation, and independence.

swan is a gender presentation interpreting femininity through a nonbinary lense, without necessarily conforming to cis concepts of femaleness or femininity. it taps into concepts and expressions of nonbinary beauty, softness, and grace.

these terms were always intended to be agnostic of individual sexuality or gender identity, to reject cis ideas of what it means to be masculine or feminine, and to be defined by the people who identified with them. they are not genders (except in the way that ‘butch’, for example, can be used as a gender), and they are available to all nonbinary people.

sadly, these labels enjoyed a brief period of popularity, circa 2017-2018, and then seem to have largely faded into obscurity. this blog argues that they should be readopted and popularized, and is specifically aimed or centered on a stag presentation.

why use these terms?

regardless of your stance on discourse, or your agreement or disagreement with the terms’ creators, stag/fox/swan labels offer nonbinary people a useful tool: concrete ways of identifying our presentation without labeling ourselves as ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’. think of them as similar to a term like ‘butch’, which is usually used to express that the bearer has a ‘masculine’ presentation that is explicitly centered in WLW identity, is not cis male, and does not conform to cis men’s ideas of what it means to be masculine. 

there are certainly nonbinary butches, and this post isn’t to say they should all call themselves stags, it merely intends to point out that specific existing labels like butch don’t meet the needs of all nonbinary people-- not all of us are comfortable identifying in that way. these terms are important and historic, and the goal is to create the use of new terms, not supplant anything.

the only inherent limitation to stag, fox, and swan as labels is that they be used by nonbinary people. a butch nonbinary lesbian, a transmasc gay man, a transfem genderfluid person, and an unaligned agender person could all identify as ‘stag’. and what you think stag looks like doesn’t have to be what i think it looks like. the point here is just to find common ground, and shape terms for ourselves as a nonbinary community that can encompass many different individuals. this blog aims to contribute to that.
