it's complicated! neither of them actually live lives where they'd necessarily EXPECT combat, so their weapons are carried mostly in the case they need to defend themselves.

(lux's oversized rapier is SO inconvenient for this, but he's committed to his style. he DOES also have a smaller longsword for those low energy days though)

tana spends most of his days wandering through the wilderness, and avoids larger civilization as much as he can. the only reason he even carries a sword instead of just like. an axe. is because he enjoys swords as a concept. theyre cool.

lux on the other hand spends a lot of time in the larger coastal cities, and until tana shows up is at almost no risk of even getting harmed in the first place, for a variety of reasons, but mainly just because his services are incredibly valued (he's able to get them wares theyd have an INCREDIBLY hard time getting their hands on without him. hes a bit of a local legend in some harbor towns)

lux's sword IS magical, but he doesnt use it primarily for combat. it can create lil portals and lets him move around really fast, which he uses for a LOT of things (it's very convenient)

using their magic to for combat is something they both TEND to avoid. their magic is unique in the world, and being too obvious abt it may draw unwanted attention. depending on how you use it, it can also be INCREDIBLY draining, especially for lux. on tana's ref you can see constellation patterns glowing up his arms, and scars going even further. heavy use of magic ends up burning you from the inside a little.

when attacked, they would use their swords in combat, and if pressed further would use their magic eventually, and it would not be impossible for them to use magic in tandem with their swordfighting, but since they dont PRIMARILY live combat oriented lives, i'd more just categorize them as spellcasters who happen to carry swords with them.
