What If: Kieran agrees to letting Juliana handle his hair in Chapter 15 of Azure Dive?

This is a snippet I decided to do because yesterday, it was a certain author's birthday. But I couldn't finish on time because my internet died for the remainder of my night. So @dipplinduo, have this day late birthday present ;w;

“Want me to fix your hair up a bit?” Juliana offers, showing a spare hair band in the palm of her hand. She must’ve detected the hesitant look in his dark yellow eyes. “I’m just going to put it into a ponytail, nothing fancy or eye-catching!” And there was that reassuring tone of hers which had a habit of melting away his concerns. How does she do it? How can she just easily calm his nerves like that? It was frustrating she had that much control over him, after everything. 

But, on the other hand he decided to humor her a bit. His hair was a beast to tackle as Carmine liked to put it. Which is why it used to be the unruly mess it was known for. “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt I guess.” He tried to come across to her in an aloof manner. That was how cool people do it right? He was cool. 

“Then come sit in front of me, I won't bite.” Juliana had that irritably cute smile on her face that reminded him of sunflowers. He moves over to sit in front of her with his legs now criss-cross flapplesauce. Kieran could hear Juliana crawl up to him a bit more, she must be standing on her knees to accommodate the height difference they now shared. 

“Just a ponytail.” He huffs, looking down at the floor of the violet tent they were in. 

“Of course! Do you want it high, low, or in the middle?” 

Frankly, Kieran didn’t really care but, if he had to answer her back. “Middle.” There was something weirdly electrifying about having Juliana this close to him. And she hugged him mere moments ago! 

“Gotcha! This won’t take long!” 

Kieran lightly tenses up the moment he felt her fingers run through his hair, it felt different. It felt… intimate with the way her nails lightly scratch his scalp, the strands of his hair sliding off her fingers. He eases up because it felt nice. 

“You have such pretty hair Kieran, I’m jealous. Can I brush it?” Juliana asks with her voice filled with warmth and Kieran mumbles a yes. Trying to mask away his eagerness for more of her touch. Soon a brush made contact with his hair, and that felt nice too. He could fall asleep to how gentle and soothing Juliana was messing with his hair. He closes his eyes letting out a soft sigh and slight shiver over how good it is. He could get used to this. The birds were chirping outside, the tree leaves lightly rustling, all while they were in this tent. It was the two of them. No Champion of Paldea. No Champion of Blueberry Academy. Just him and her. Sharing this soft moment with no prying eyes and hardly any words between them. Their actions meaning far more than simple words. With Kieran just melting into her from the experience. 

Locks of his hair were being bundled up into her hand and Kieran felt it being bound together by the hair band shortly after. Kieran turned around slowly while Juliana sat down again, grabbing her phone to show him what she did to his hair. He liked it. Rather than just one color covering over the other, there were locks of mauve and black mixing in neatly with each other. With the short ponytail being right at the middle just like he said he wanted.  “Thanks.”

“Mhm, you’re welcome.” Juliana smiles fondly at him. Kieran didn’t know what overcame him but he decided to impulsively run a hand through her side ponytail. “K-Kieran?” Juliana’s cheeks were rosy. 

“Your hair has grown longer too…” He murmurs, gently feeling her soft chestnut brown hair against his hand.

“Y-Yeah…” Juliana responds, her soft blue eyes with violet hues didn’t move away from his own. Even when Kieran boldly moved on from her hair to running the back of his fingers down the side of her face. He could feel his ears getting warm when he witnesses her subconsciously lean into his touch. She liked being touched by him as he liked being touched by her. 

“Juliana…I-”

“HEY! I SEE YOU’RE BOTH AWAKE IN THERE!” Came the most obnoxious and loudest voice, that Kieran began having not so pleasant thoughts about the source of said voice. “FOOD IS ALMOST READY!” Crispin when I get my hands on you…. 

Juliana immediately flinches back, her face incredibly red and no longer able to meet his gaze. “O-Oh yeah! Don’t want the food to be cold! We should get going!” Juliana started to crawl out of the tent in a rush. 

“Yeah… we should.” Kieran looks down at his hand that was just on her face. Mentally screaming at himself, he could feel his face match the same shade of red as Juliana's.

Silently memorizing and burning everything that happened in this tent into his mind for many years to come.

Drayton reflects on everything that leads up to the present day, while the revelations won’t stop coming for Juliana who might find herself in danger, which is just another day for her at this point.

Update on Chapter 20 of Azure Dive

I'm nearing the home stretch! This is how long the chapter is so far and I'm not finished! I anticipate maybe another 1k-1.5k words until completion.

I can't go into too much details why this chapter took an extra while on top of the laptop ordeal and DipplinShipping Week eating up a chunk of that time. Because it's actually spoiler territory if I elaborate on it more! The most basic answer I can give is quality control and check for this chapter in particular. This may be my most difficult chapter to write yet. But I think it is very worth it in the end and I'll be proud of it looking back on it!

Good news, Tech Support couldn't figure out what was wrong with my laptop so they're sending me a brand new one! I have no clue when it gets here though. But hey, updates will shortly be more consistent again!

The release date of this chapter is most likely going to be this Sunday.

I know I didn't describe what Juliana looked like in Chapter 2 of Pair of Aces. But the Childhood Friends + Juliana Attends Blueberry AU was starting to give me some brainrotting so I decided to make this doodle of her. Showcasing how living in Kitakami and being besties with Kieran for the past seven years, changed her a little. I made her hair slightly longer to differentiate it a bit from the hairstyle she has when wearing a jinbei.

(God I hope my actual laptop comes back from repairs soon, I do not like Paint and how it messed up making it transparent ;-;)

Headcanons

She unaware of her own growing romantic feelings for Kieran, despite everything they've done together. They're there, it's just... she hasn't realized them, and is kind of dense about it.

She's still a battle prodigy, but without Nemona there to kick start her drive, she just goes with the flow. Only battling when someone asks her and doesn't have much of a drive to get stronger.

She is part of the BB League Club, ranking around in the middle.

One time she got hurt when Kieran (who was nine at the time) thought it would be a good idea to go up Oni Mountain to find the Ogre. Her ankle got twisted and Kieran got harshly scolded by both her mother and his grandparents. She accepts his tearful apology. Unfortunately, the events caused Juliana to not be able to run like she used to anymore.

It took six to eight months for nine year old Carmine to finally warm up to the seven year old 'Outsider'. In present day, they're close friends!

She winds up getting a similar accent to Kieran and Carmine after spending seven years of her life in Kitakami.

Her Starter Pokemon that she received at Blueberry is Snivy, that is currently a Servine! It was a welcome gift from Drayton, the reigning BB League Champion.

Her very first Pokemon came from after meeting a strange and tall man that was looking into the legends and myths of Kitakami. He gives her an egg that later on hatched into a Togepi. (It's now a Togetic)

You ever just as writer go like this when reading the foreshadowing you've built up and think you've executed it well on your own work?

Caution! - Contains spoilers for the newly released Chapter 19 (As of this post)

Chapter 5 He crushed Blair’s hopes and dreams like it was a small twig, Juliana showed up finally and now he can relax and be alone. Not bothering to take part in one of those movie night hangouts or sleepovers that his classmates liked to do. He didn’t mind the fact he never was invited to any of that despite being Champion or the ‘Go to Guy for Help’ they sometimes refer to him as. He believes he finally grew grew numb to the concept of loneliness. Or that’s what he keeps telling himself.

Chapter 19

“It’s no big deal! You’re a dear friend to me Kieran, this is what I do for any of them.” Juliana reassures him before turning to her TV. “Is there something you wanna watch while eating? I got Pokeflix and Zuzu.” She turns on her TV and spots the Brycen-Man films and Big Monster series being available for streaming on Pokeflix. “Those take me back, I remember watching them so much my mom had to buy  another DVD copy of one of them.” 

“...You like Brycen-Man and Big Monster too?” Kieran blurted out, before looking away embarrassed. “I-I mean that’s cool…” 

“Yeah I do! Especially Big Monster! It’s where I got my love of reptilian Pokémon!” Before she knew it she was gushing about the two franchises. “And I just recently learned that Unova’s current Champion played the main heroine for them!” 

She heard a low chuckle from Kieran, “Well why don’t we watch Big Monster 2: The Mechanical Menace? It’s my favorite of them.” He gently pats the spot right next to him, inviting her to sit with him.  To which Juliana immediately accepts. She sits close by him and selects the movie.

And.

Kieran looked away for a moment. “My parents…” He muttered before sighing. “Uh…I’m still feeling a wee bit light-headed. I think I’m gonna go lay down and rest here. If… If that’s okay with you, that I can stay the night here.” 

“Kieran, you’re free to stop by and rest here whenever you want. You don’t have to ask.” Juliana lets out a light giggle. “I’m probably gonna go to bed real soon after I put away the rest of the soup and grab your clothes out of the dryer.” She gets up to head to her closet. “I think I have a spare blanket here somewhere. You can take my bed. I know it’s not entirely comfy laying on my couch so I’ll-” 

“But this is your room!” Kieran interrupted her, shocked. “How is that fair?”

“Well there’s only one bed so unless you wanna share it.” Funny, a few days ago she was a blushing mess on the idea of sleeping right next to Kieran. But now? Not so much, here she was trying to humor him even with the small blush she could feel on her cheeks. 

“T-Then let’s share it so that neither of us wake up with neck or back pains by sleeping on the couch.” 

“That sounds fine to me! Let me just get my PJs on and do what I said I was gonna do!”

I'm back from vacation!

First of all, there was an overwhelming number of votes pointing towards "Yes" in the poll so that's neat!

Secondly, I'm already hard at work on Chapter 18! I can't really say much without spoiling it too much. But when I said I was bringing the heat, I'm bringing the heat! It'll be one of my most action-packed chapters yet! And I'm so excited to work on Azure Dive again! Gaaaah!

Lastly, if I do happen to slow down in future updates, it's because I'm most likely working on another project! Like the prompts for DipplinShipping week that's coming up in about a month or so!

Actually, not lastly, but this time it is for sure the last one! I'm leaving you with an out of context gif that has something to do with the upcoming chapter! Just because I missed working on Azure Dive, that fic is my baby!
