“What do you think of the new Matron?” Nancy asked as she walked with Jemma from the staff room to the kitchen.

“Betty?” Jemma pursed her lips. “Well… I’ll miss Clara. I probably shouldn’t say more than that.”

Nancy laughed underneath her breath as they turned a corner. “I won’t tell anyone if you won’t. She seems worse than Edna—what a taskmaster. She’ll run a tight ship, at the very least.”

“And we’ll have to keep on our toes,” Jemma reminded her. “I don’t think a single thing will escape her eye. She’ll demand the very best from us.” Which she aimed to provide at all times anyway—but there would be no room for mistakes, not under Matron Betty.

This was not how Jemma wanted to spend her Easter Sunday.

Despite telling Milton she couldn’t get time away from the hospital to come to London, he’d wheedled about it endlessly in his next letter, guilt had set in, and then the universe had aligned so she had her monthly day off right at the start of the month, on Easter. She had no feasible excuse not to go. She’d used the Stewarts’ phone to ring him with her acceptance of his invitation and thought that was that—just one interminable party to get through—until the letter from her mother had arrived, joyful over the news of her excursion to London and asking (demanding, really) that Jemma join her for lunch before she left for Milton’s work party.

She’d seethed. Her fiancé was a snitch, it seemed.

She even said the year I spent at bloody finishing school was wasted.” Her shoulders sagged. “My mother wants me to be the best of the best and I’m afraid I’m just really not.”

But there was nothing else for it. She had to get up and get on with it, because that’s what everyone did in wartime. There could be no shirking of duty because she was afraid or uncomfortable. People depended on her to do her part.

Jemma pushed aside her blankets and got out of bed, wiggling her toes against the floorboards as she stretched. Time to start her morning routine again.

Reaching the back entrance, she pulled on the handle to one of the heavy oaken doors just enough so she could squeeze through, ignoring the housekeeper’s shout to shut the door behind her. She was outside now. She could do whatever she wanted!

Jemma Simmons’ eyes opened to darkness.

Her long-established routine immediately kicked in: silence the shrill alarm rattling away on the bedside table, switch on the lamp, then lie back in bed and blink up at the ceiling as her eyesight adjusted to the dim light that bathed her attic bedroom. She allowed herself one moment to be still and enjoy the comforts of her small bed before she stretched and got up, heading downstairs to the bathroom to begin the rest of her morning ritual. Time to face another day.

It was February, 1945. The Allies had long since pushed onto the Continent and were beating the Germans back, but they were suffering heavy losses along the way. As a nurse, Jemma had seen the worst of the casualties coming back to British soil from the front and even some that resulted from attacks at home—all of the blood and guts and gristle that were a part of wartime. Thankfully, she no longer dealt with death. Now she worked in recovery.

it just occurred to me that Cakeverse mightn’t have migrated over to Tumblr but here’s a crash course in my understanding of it but if others who are more in the know want to comment or correct me, please go ahead. 

It’s a trope that is supposed to be the little step-sibling of Omegaverse in that people have a trinity of alignments that they can naturally be but I personally more see it as a trope more akin to Hanahaki Disease. 

Regardless, the three alignments are Cakes, Forks, and Normal People

Cakes are people who naturally taste like, well, cake; additionally, its entirely possible for someone to go through their entire life without realising they are a Cake since the only way they really find out about their status is through the coincidence of kissing a Fork

Forks are people who can detect that Cakes taste like cake; its also not uncommon for Forks to have no sense of taste outside of making out (or eating) Cakes

Normal people can’t taste Cakes nor do they taste like Cake; normal people are the most common alignment and make up the vast majority of the population. A personal spin I put on this is that Normal people should be called Plates to keep to the theme

typically, the people of this AU are people but there are varieties and flavours of this AU wherein Cakes are made of Cake and Forks are depicted as being especially ravenous or sharp toothed. all in all, its a very flexible AU in presentation and themes.

the reasons for this happening can be varied and the trope exists on a sliding scale of silly to serious with silly treating it as a funny quirk with no deeper meaning with works on the more serious end really playing into tropes of medical distress or cannibalism. Additionally, it can be a recent thing or an unquestioned, long-standing part of life

I mean I wrote s1 FS being handed their daughter 🤷‍♀️

Pretty convenient that all the insane time travel and Deke stuff happens when Fitz and Simmons are in a (relatively) stable relationship. It’s the future. Theoretically, they could’ve been sucked into the future earlier, they just weren’t.

Things might’ve been crazy in season 5, but imagine how much crazier it would’ve been if Fitz and Simmons met their grandson at the beginning of season 3. Simmons is still dealing with the aftermath of Maveth and her feelings for Will and she finds out she and Fitz have a literal grandson.

Imagine if they met him sometime in season 2, where Simmons isn’t even sure what she’s feeling about Fitz and all that he said at the bottom of the ocean, and everything is complicated and strange.

Imagine if Fitz and Simmons met Deke in season 1. Two best friends. One might have feelings for the other. They meet their grandson.
