I just found this post again and I remembered writing it when I was said over the summer. yes, i’m still sad and I frequently jam to champagne problems but i’m also happy because I don’t think my value comes from how stupid boys feel about me. like miss swift said, i’m gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well. maybe i’m augustine to the boys who were my james but augustine might patch up someone else’s tapestry. so yeah.

I think the reason I love betty by taylor swift so much is because it makes me painfully aware that I’m not any boy’s betty girl, I’m their august girl. I’m not the kind of girl they’ll show up for, whose broken wings get patched, who gets kissed on their porch. I’m the filler, the one they sleep next to while thinking of someone else, the kind of girl who thinks she has a boy until he walks away and chases after the girl he really wants. I’m the one who pulls up in the car and forces them to get in, not the one they’ll show up uninvited at a party for. the girl who realizes he isn’t hers to lose. the girl who cancels their plans for a boy, not the one boys plan for weeks to surprise.

the summer love that is written off as a bottle of wine, sweet and intoxicating in the moment but all too easy to discard when you’re done.

also!!! the whole last chorus! “you had to kill me but it killed you just the same” - she had to let go of her past to embrace this new side of her but it hurt her a lot bc those old taylors are a part of her. “drunk on this pain” - how many times did she talk about being drunk on reputation?? “crossing out the good years” aka all her old eras were still good years.

and the reason she called it my tears ricochet? since it’s old taylor and new taylor, one cries and it bounces back bc they’re still the same person. so her tears...literally...ricochet HER MIND

I also thought illicit affairs might fit into the pov of the august girl. and there’s another song i think is from the pov of betty.

I wonder why Taylor talks about cheating and some breakup themes throughout this album. Obviously it has nothing to do with her personal life but it was a little jarring at first. I wonder what draws her to that kind of thing exactly and why she even thought it was important to share that story in these teenage love story songs. And I dont understand the order of that..how does Cardigan make sense first? Wouldnt August be first? Its confusing. Did she forgive him in the end? I only heard it once

we know that taylor enjoys writing breakup songs and really getting into the emotion of it (i can imagine she especially enjoyed it after writing lover which was so heavily love song based) and cheating is something she has experienced previously so can tap into the emotions of but also allows for a lot of creativity because it’s sort of a very emotionally heightened form of a breakup (as opposed to, say, being like “right person wrong time”) and allows her to explore various viewpoints within one narrative

as for the order, i don’t think the tracklisting is necessarily reflective of the chronological order and the story is very open ended. in my head it goes:

“august” - reflecting as the summer romance comes to an end

“betty” - around autumn, james is back at school (whereas in august she mentions ‘when you’re back at school’) and asking for betty’s forgiveness but we never find out if she gives it

(this is just me imagining some other connections but i think “this is me trying” could fit here as an older james (either like five years later, or a whole twenty years and taking place alongside “cardigan”) is still hung up on betty and going back to the town they grew up in)

“cardigan” - this is after a time jump, as taylor mentioned “a cardigan that still bears the scent of loss twenty years later” and the song talks about “when you are young” as though from an adult’s perspecctive, so my version is that betty doesn’t take james back and they go their separate ways but she still looks back on that first love
