I'm not really good with explaining myself (also English isn't my first language) but I saw someone else's post about it this week and their take when they first read the book was that Peeta used the "star crossed lovers" purely as a strategy in the beginning (the op of that post recognizes that they were wrong in that regard but it's such a good post! I could link it for you if you're interested?)

Anyways, they made the point that it started feeling real in the cave when Katniss is trying to get them food and she goes and says that Haymitch didn't want her to talk about certain topics. And then they kiss and Katniss feels something stirring inside

And I thought it was such!! An interesting view!!

Because like the op of that post and you just said: it would make sense for Peeta to feel a little betrayed at the end of the first book. Because even though it started as a strategy on his/their part, he fell and thought she was falling, too.

Which makes sense if we look at Katniss wording on that scene and the general opinion that she can't act out of the two of them. Of course he would think she was falling, after all he did.

yes i'm inclined to agree that it's the post-feast kiss!! i think it's the feast scene too -- @mollywog left an AWESOME reblog on my original post with some highlights for that exact same scene pointing to it as the moment when things become "real" for peeta. and i think, no matter how much we think peeta's crush is real or played up or whatever else, i agree that scene is significant as the moment where it becomes "real" for peeta. because she's willing to do something irrational for his sake.

and it's interesting too that that's ALSO the scene where it becomes "real" for katniss!! "it's him" she says -- she doesn't want to lose HIM. and then of course that famous "stirring" kiss

and interestingly we can also draw a connection to their beach kiss in catching fire -- another moment where the "reality" of losing peeta hits katniss in full force and she realizes she can't really deal with that. "i do, i need you" is kind of the grown up version of that "it's him" line -- they're both moments when she recognizes for herself that she isn't just doing this to survive, or because he happens to be there with her, but because she genuinely cares about HIM, as a PERSON, as an INDIVIDUAL.

@mollywog also pointed out that one of peeta's biggest pet peeves (seems like a weak word to describe it but go with it) is being called stupid or having it be implied that he doesn't "get" something. and yes it's a brilliant connection that it is the one line we get from his mother: where she calls him stupid. and whenever he gets mad at katniss and/or haymitch in the books, it's usually for implying that he's dumb or for keeping secrets from him. like when katniss says he doesn't "get" the concept of owing someone something and he's like um wtf. (that scene always makes me laugh bc she's like no peeta you don't get it, i owe you for saving my life, and he's like ok right... so the thing that you... also just did for me. but back to the topic at hand) and that moment at the end of the first book ties both those things together: not only does she imply that he misread her actions as genuine when she was faking them, she also says that haymitch kept the danger of their situation a secret from him -- and i think that hurts him too!

so i guess the answer is kind of what i was pointing to in my original post. that is, like, peeta is right! katniss IS genuinely falling for him, and he, correctly, picks up on that! it's not peeta's misreading of the situation, it's katniss' defense mechanisms that are the root of the issue. peeta knew when things became real; he's hurt that katniss is still denying it.

i guess it's just interesting because i feel like on a first read, it seems like peeta is just sad that katniss was faking their romance the whole time. but the more you dive into it, i think what he's actually sad about is that he thinks he misread the moment when things changed for her as just being part of the act. but the beauty of that is that like, he didn't! he was actually totally correct.

and katniss knows it too -- she talks about that kiss regularly. it also kind of ties into that quote from catching fire where she's talking about the fake pregnancy and she says "it could be true" but her logic isn't like "if this wasn't fake," her logic is "if i hadn't spent years building up my walls." so she kind of admits it as well -- that it's more so that SHE'S too scared to let it be real, and that SHE'S the one deluding herself -- not him! (i wonder on what level he recognizes that too! like, i definitely think he's hurt by her implication that he misread their whole dynamic. but i also wonder if there's a side of him that's also hurt that she won't let go of her defense mechanisms for his sake. because a part of him must still be thinking there's no way i misread ALL of that. why won't she just admit it too?)

ugh. so interesting to think about. he's so complex! it's easy to reduce peeta to just like -- king of my heart best boy ever the blueprint book boyfriend -- but he's actually a really interesting and nuanced character and his traits all make sense when you put them together in context of his background and his relationships. so good!!

Things that went through my mind while watching this episode:

--Tanjiro had told Inosuke that the reason Zenitsu didn't pull out his sword on him was because it was against Corp rules. Evidently, Zenitsu doesn't actually care about this rule.

--I know there is discomfort with Zenitsu chasing Nezuko around the room and pointing out that it wasn't in the manga, but like... the basis for it was there. ZenStans (and I am one) point out how the anime made him seem worse for how they added this chase scene and took out the later scene of Zenitsu talking to Nezuko in her box, but... the conniptions and uncomfortable attitudes towards girls do come straight from the manga. Zenitsu still had a lot of growing up to do (and given material that came out after the manga ended, in some ways, he never does). On first watch, I really wasn't being won to the ZenNezu cause... heck, I don't think it was until after the manga ended that I grew positive feelings toward ZenNezu instead of just "sigh, OK." (If you follow my blog, you've probably guessed by now that I do truly enjoy shipping ZenNezu now.)

--I also didn't have positive feelings for Inosuke yet at this point, I found him hopelessly unreasonable. But me now? LOOK AT THE BABY, BEING MOTHERED BY A HUMAN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 14 YEARS.

--In my digest of the last episode I said we get the joy of watching Inosuke explore his humanity, and that makes me see his perplexity at "live proudly" in a very different light. He has joined a pack (the Corp) and he wants to be a part of it, as beasts do, which makes him receptive to the rules. Oh, no swords? My bad, got it. Live proudly? What does that mean? Precisely, how? What's that weak old lady's position to be able to say this? Inosuke was so willing to go along and learn all these new things that he DID put on the full Corp uniform when he received it (but, according to the fanbook, didn't like how it felt and then demolished the top half). Look at how quick he changed into new clothes after Hisa-san brought him some new ones. He accepted it so quickly, whether just for a natural inclination to obedience or because it did feel nice on his sensitive skin.

--I wish the good-luck sparks lit against their backs would had been an ongoing thing. I love that touch so much.

--"Go bu-un wo" (good luck in battle) in a phrase that goes through my head a lot, and there are LINE messenger stickers of Hisa-san saying that as she makes sparks. A friend sent it to me before my first Nerd Test attempt and I felt very encouraged (and then I failed that time, but that's besides the point. I passed the following year).

--It's not stated anywhere how long they stayed at that mansion having a peaceful recovery (as peaceful as Zenitsu and Inosuke can allow it to be), but... this may be some of the longest Zenitsu has had people around willing to just chill out with him (as Kaigaku was never willing), the longest rest Tanjiro has gotten ever since his family was killed, and the longest Inosuke can ever remember sleeping under a roof.

--Watching that Corp member get sucked back into the trees as he screams for help? Legit terrifying. I love that they still show Tanjiro feeling scared enough for his hands to shake. Also, as an animation detail, Tanjiro does so much thinking with his eyes and the CG works so well to show this (it's like he's got some Rengoku in him).

--Inosuke just... stabbing spiders

--Murata!!! --Murata... I... I looked, but I didn't find relevant content in my blog to reblog in honor of his appearance.

--But, uh, look, Murata! It's the boy you took care of at the Final Selection! He's a Pillar now!

--AND THERE'S MY QUEEN NEXT TO HIM

--I don't know how long the Kamaboko boys were in recovery, but long enough for Kanao to do laps on them in jumping ranks through the Corp. She's exceeded Murata already (she was a Tsumonoto by this point, according to the first fanbook).

--Sorry, Murata... you're doing your best, I know. And I'm really sorry you had to witness your comrades killing each other. Murata deserves more credit for how much he's been through over the years, and how much he's struggled through with meager innate talent. Murata is proof of the merits of hard work. Let it be remembered that even when he had permission to give up on Himejima's strength training, he stuck it out (not likely successfully, but he deserves credit for effort).

--Love the sequences of the spider family throughout the forest, they set up Mother Spider to be a truly terrifying presence by coming last after Father being forebodingly large and still, Brother peeking at you, and Sister kicking her legs in time to the creepy music while she sits up in the tree tops.

--And later on we get our first Rui appearance. Forget wanting to "eat people and get stronger" as demons are tasked with, or even looking for the Blue Spider Lily, Rui truly does just want to play house and be left alone. Special treatment from Muzan, indeed.

--I hope the animators had fun on Spatial Awareness, zooming in to his hand at the end like he's grabbed hold of Mother Spider? Excellent.

--I HAD NO RECOLLECTION OF ZENITSU AND CHUNTARO DOING THE TAISHO SECRET TOGETHER. UKOGI LOVES RICE??? WHAT WASTED POTENTIAL FOR BIRD FIC.

// Aight here’s what’s up with Alastor’s hair, brought to you by a veteran hair dyer/bleacher, brace yaselves.

So this isn’t where I think canon is headed at all, but consider: Alastor is greying. He’s canonically in poor health, my headcanon is that whatever he contracted with to get his power is leeching at him. Some people go grey early. I’ve been having grey hairs since undergrad and I know someone who went full grey in his 30′s. Maybe he’s greying, roll with it.

So, we start with the presumption that his natural hair color is red, possibly a darker red than what we see now.

And then, he starts greying at the roots. So he dyes all his hair dark brown.

Why dark brown? One, because it’s what his hair color in life was. Two, because it’s a forgiving color and it’s dark enough to cover the existing red without requiring bleach, and three -- because dyeing grey hair is not like dyeing not-grey or simply bleached hair, let me explain, hang on.

Most color is formulated to interact with existing color in your hair, largely, either natural colors, or the result of bleach (which is a brass color unless you lighten enough. my hair is the color of a trombone rn). 

If you know basic color theory, then you know that purple/blue is on the opposite side of the color wheel as orange/yellow. You neutralize a color by combining it with the opposite on the color wheel. So, for example, if you want to reduce the post-bleach brassiness/orange and have your hair a cooler brown/blonde, you can use an ‘ash’ toner/dye. The dye has blues in it that neutralize the orange/warm tones in your hair.

If your hair is grey, then your hair just turns blue/green when you dye it with an ‘ash’ toner/color because there’s no yellow/orange to cancel out. Same with red dyes, they’re often formulated to build on the existing underlying orange/yellow (or brown) and they look wack on grey hair. I have greys and you can tell where they are bc of how they process reds.

One type of color that does work safe for grey hair is a series of dye marked as N, it’s a brown line of color, and it actually has brown pigment on it’s own. It’s not just made to add to existing hair color. 5N is a medium brown, 3N is a dark brown, 1N is as close to black as you’ll get with a brown base, etc.

So! Anyway! Al over here’s going grey and dyes his hair brown, like a nice 3N/4N color.

Here’s another thing about grey hair: it doesn’t hold color as well as pigmented hair. It fades really easily unless you’re using a dye made for grey coverage, and even then it’s not always good. You can see my greys now because they lost all the color where the rest of my dyed hair is still dyed!

So!

The part of Alastor’s hair that isn’t grey does hold the brown. The grey part at his roots? It fades. It fades to a shitty red, bc the red pigments in it cling like hell. Brown in general fades, stuff like red and black cling forever, don’t ask me why, idk.

Canonically, most of what’s in Hell is off-brand shit that doesn’t work well, Viv said it in a stream lol. He doesn’t get that nice high-ammonia 100% grey coverage long lasting stuff. 

So the bottom part of his hair is holding that nice brown color, the rest has faded to shit.

So he says fuckit and just dyes it red. If it’s gonna go to red anyway and red clings, might as well just stick to red. It does fade, too, he’s probably using Manic Panic vampire red but it fades down to the color it is now and it requires upkeep.

The brown part of his hair is too dark to pick up the red, so it stays brown. (Lighter colored dye won’t show up on darker hair -- that’s why you gotta bleach it, and Alastor isn’t going to run his hair through the bleach ringer without good reason. Do not get me started on bleach.)

So! Al’s hair is the combination of him greying and a few dye attempts. Now he just keeps up with the red when it starts to fade or his roots come in. Or when he has a mental breakdown. Dyeing your hair when you have a breakdown is Not Straight culture I’m pretty sure.
