Lookism Webtoon/Manhwa is Still About Lookism, After All

Added some new analysis. SPOILERS ALERT.

I read many complaints that Lookism webtoon/manhwa isn't about lookism anymore (some even call it "fightism" or "gangism"). I respectfully beg to disagree, since I think the manhwa/webtoon is still a story about lookism, despite the genre shift. I recently binge-read the webtoon/manhwa for about three weeks, so maybe that's why I can spot the threads of the lookism theme across the story.

If you want to read about the current arcs, please read point B right away.

A. Lookism in its basic definition (early arcs)

Spotlight Characters

1.Daniel

Lookism is "societal discrimination based on looks or perceived notion of beauty". As we all know, this concept can easily be applied to the case of Daniel (Hyungseok). With his second body, Daniel could access the things he previously couldn't even dream of: becoming a model, a singer, even a trainee, finding friends, crushes, etc.

2. Crystal, Duke, Aru,Jasmine, Yui and Zoe

Crystal (Soojung)'s smaller body and Duke (Deokhwa) experienced discrimination based on their looks. Others used their looks or appearance to manipulate others, like Aru (the singer of PTJ Company), or Jasmine (Youngmi), the girl who framed Vasco for theft. Yui and Zoe (Haneul) had to "sell" more than looks as streamers (they had to dress and act provocatively even though they're minors).

3. Vasco and Burn Knuckles

People like Vasco and the rest of the Burn Knuckles suffer from being stigmatized as coarse criminals simply because of their looks, tattoos and built, when actually they're really kind people.

4. The Stalker

The stalker ended up getting the attention she craved after putting on some makeup, making her look pretty even though she's a hideous criminal inside and outside.

So the school/trainee/daily life chapters of Lookism are very straightforward about what lookism is and about its impacts. Maybe that's why some readers think that the lookism theme stops there. But actually the theme stays even after the genre shifts to scifi/thriller/action.

B. Lookism and Its Further Consequences (later arcs)

Ever since the genre shifted, the manhwa/webtoon expanded its notion of lookism into further observation on its consequences.

Let's see.

1.Juvenile Prison and Jiho's Last Moment Arcs

Jiho

In his desperation, Jiho sought for societal acceptance through a series of crimes. He kept making the wrong choices just because he felt victimized and alienated (from lookism reasons). He ended up in a vicious mentality as a tragic, suicidal murderer.

2. Hostel Arc

Spotlight Characters

Eli

Eli (Jang Hyun)'s studies hairdressing, benefits from his gentle looks and mannerisms. So people previously always excluded him from the list of J (Jaewon) High gangsters (unlike Vasco, Zack (Jinsung), Logan (Taesung), Burn Knuckles members) before the God Dog crew came to find him. Had he dressed, talked, and looked like a gang member, many people would've distanced themselves from him from the get go.

Olly

On the other hand, Olly (Ochun / Ohchun), who at times acted and looked unhinged, started out as a sheltered kid who was starving for attention and kindness. People were scared of him but he didn't start out that way, and he made himself scary, ironically, to gain some footing in the world that Eli lived in and later abandoned.

In Eli and Olly's case, the former benefited from lookism while the latter was disadvantaged by it, that until their respective backgrounds were revealed people never knew that they were biased towards these two.

Sally and Warren

Sally (Serim) is perceived as a rich princess just because of her looks and her rumored wealth, but is actually a very lonely child who lives alone in a shabby place. Warren (Wonseok) is rumored and regarded as a scary school thug but is actually a brave and protective orphan. The two characters suffer from prejudices that are rooted in lookism.

3. Fourth, Third and Second Affiliate Arcs

Spotlight Characters

Vivi and Mitsuki

In the Third and Second Affiliate of Workers (Ilhae) arcs, people like Vivi and Mitsuki benefit from their wealth and beauty that they (almost) got away with horrible crimes that range from illicit drug use, manufacture, and trade, multiple counts of sexual assaults, human trafficking, and abduction. In a lookism-based society, the rich and privileged could benefit more when they are also beautiful.

Jake (and Daniel)

During the Third Affiliate Arc, Jake (Gimyung) was allowed to enter Vivi's nightclub and work there mainly because he doesn't look like a minor. While Daniel wasn't allowed, until he shows the Workers pin that Gun (Jonggun) gave him. They're both minors but only Daniel was suspected, because of how different they look, showing a bias caused by lookism.

Ms. Raccoon and Arin

In the Fourth Affiliate arc, an innocent-looking streamer nicknamed as Ms Raccoon lured Hostel's Amy and Natalie (Yejin and Eunbi) and later bound them under a slave contract in a secluded location. The two young girls would not be easily deceived had the streamer seemed hostile.

Daniel also met Arin, a beautiful but poor newbie streamer, who was later drugged and almost sexually assaulted by Vivi's cohorts. He regretted introducing Kwitch streaming to her. Her case is an example that lookism can turn beauty into harm when the beautiful is socially disadvantaged.

Johan and Vin

Johan (Yohan) and Vin (Hobin) live with a disability (visual impairment). In Johan's case he always covers his impaired eye with his hair, while Vin hides his polycoria behind super dark sunglasses. But Johan's disability was discovered by Zack in the Fourth Affiliate arc, and Vin was forced to show his during the Second Affiliate arc. In both ocassions, both characters were furious that their disability was revealed.

Before the Lookism arc, Vin even told Mary (Miru) that his dream of becoming a rapper had ended since people had seen his disability implying that what society wants is a perfect celebrity.

Although both Johan and Vin don't fully lose their self-confidence from their disabilities (and Vin spitefully targeted Duke because of his physique), we can't ignore the fact that both characters choose to conceal their disability and consider it as their blemish. This behavior is also a facet of lookism.

Channing and Jace

Channing (Changwon) of Ansan Public hurt and shamed his opponents by slashing them with tattoo pens. The purpose of this torture isn't simply to inflict pain but also to bring shame, since tattoos are still stigmatized in many aspects and in many places, including in Korea. So when Jace was slashed and branded with Ansan Public's name and address and in uneven colors, Vasco was livid. It was more than just his own trauma resurfacing, you know. Jace already got his own tattoos, but being branded and stripped like that was humiliating.

4. The Hunt for Big Deal, United Major Crews, Holiday 1, Holiday 2 Arcs

Spotlight Characters

D.G., Gun and Goo

D.G. (Diego/Dagyeom/James Lee/Lee Jihoon). Behind that beautiful façade is a guy who got away with murder and erased everything about his past.

Compare his case with Gun's and Goo (Joongoo)'s, who exude dangerous gangster-ish vibes (especially Gun).

Even though all three had killed people before, D.G. is viewed as angelic, while Gun and Goo are portrayed as demonic. Their case is a clear example of lookism-based discrimination.

CEO Charles Choi and CEO Steve Hong

Charles Choi (Dongsoo), who beautified D.G. (through plastic surgery? a second body?), knew all too well of the power of beauty. It's his true and tested method: he used his own daughter Crystal (Soojung)'s disarming beauty in the same way.

Charles himself benefits from lookism. Out of all the fighters from Gen 0, Charles is the only one whose face and mannerisms look like a legit businessman. So he passes as one, even though he was Elite, a killer like the rest of those fighters.

On the other hand, Steve Hong (Hong Kyungyeong), Charles's business rival, is brash and often poorly dressed, so the public probably would probably lend more support towards Charles if their enmity was exposed.

Though both men are terrible fathers, Steve clearly abandons Jay and would probably be more criticized by the public than Charles, who fakes his affection for Crystal and face it he's a good looking old man. Charles is better at lookism-based P.R.

Luah

Small, slender, and pretty, Luah (Rua) is underestimated and often feels unsafe when she's out alone in public. In fact, she's a thorough investigator under the Big Deal crew, enough for Jake and the others to acknowledge her capabilities.

Daniel (Again)

After being underestimated for years by his relatives especially his cousins Dylan (Hyungjoon) and David (Hyunggoo) and their families, Daniel only gains full acceptance and recognition after he slimmed down, became more confident, and grew taller. This situation shows how lookism is a social wrong because it can break families apart.

5. Lookism Arc

Spotlight Characters

Hangyeol (The Grimm Plastic Surgery Clinic)

Hangyeol of Workers runs a legit plastic surgery clinic. Without the high demand for plastic surgery, it would've been difficult for him to hide the dubious malpractice, asylum and shelter operations. And why is there such a rush for plastic surgeries? The answer is lookism.

Hangyeol himself takes advantage of his looks and demeanor. Because of these, his patients takes it for granted that he's a pro through and through when in fact he's insane (and is a minor).

Mary

Mary has to hide her background as a judoka because of her past body size and another undisclosed trauma. She and Vin had to leave their hometown Cheonliang (Chunryang) and settled in Seoul, and could only recently embraced their Cheonliang identity again after Vin's escape from Mitsuki's illegal fight club.

Their shared trauma of body shaming and disability makes it hard for them to believe in other people, an example of how lookism works in alienation.

6. Jake Kim, James Lee & First Generation King Arcs

Spotlight Characters:

Sinu, Taesoo, and Seokdu

Taesoo, who is Hudson (Hyunseong)'s teacher from Ansan, is traumatized by his disability. His bitterness and shame drove him to lose his belief in himself, and to retreat from society.

Meanwhile Sinu (Shinwoo) and Seokdu are never discriminated only because they put up a "tough front" that seem to have "surpassed" their respective disability (in what is probably an example of how their society treats them as an 'inspiration porn', a term coined by Australian disability activist Stella Young).

7. First Affiliate Arc (Current Arc)

Spotlight Characters

Logan (and Daniel)

Logan is back at his worst in the First Affiliate arc when he taunted Daniel with the past crude name "Pikachu". Daniel too had to resort to call Logan "Pig" even though he knows that it's a name given by bullies including Logan himself.

This situation is an example of how lookism in society makes it difficult for people to escape from labels, no matter how far they've come.

Side Notes

Not exactly lookism here but ageism: the dismissive attitude by younger characters towards the aging members of Gen 0. Well of course physically they're different from when they were young but they're still formidable people! But they themselves despise the younger generation, so the hatred is mutual.

Maybe Samuel (Seongeun)'s bitter rivalry with Jake about Big Deal etc. counts as lookism. Jake benefits from his Gapryong looks, and is the more acknowledged one in the criminal underworld, for better or worse. I'm not saying that Jake only has his looks, of course he's talented and tough, but Samuel had nothing (the running joke between the creators and the fandom is how he's cool because his father was an AC repairman). I wonder if that was why Samuel tried hard to make his physique more formidable before meeting Jake again (but Samuel is literally a bag of insecurities and maybe not just about his looks or heritage alone so who knows).

In the Future...

I think the lookism consequences would keep appearing in the manhwa/webtoon. I mean there's the problem of Daniel's, Crystal's and who knows who else's alternate bodies. Daniel's alternate body was probably created as a perfect human weapon, while Crystal's was to observe people (and Daniel?). I have this feeling in my gut that the alternate bodies were products of someone's (Charles's? Someone else's?) morbid dissatisfaction about human imperfections.

There goes my rant about the threads of the lookism theme across the Lookism manhwa/webtoon. I'm sorry that this turns out to be very long.

I made a post once, after ep 4th, where I poured out my little thoughts about JaeWon. But that was before err... shit hit the fan. 😑

Turns out, that JaeWon is an even more tragic character than I thought. When I was writing my post, I didn't know about his brother, about the situation in his house. I thought JiHyun was the first positive, innocent, pure experience in JaeWon's life. But - what is worse in my opinion, JiHyun is the SECOND positive, innocent and pure experience in JaeWon's life. JaeWon already had someone good in his life, he had the company of a person who gave him normal, human affection without demanding anything in return. And JaeWon lost that person, which he blames himself for. And fate put a new good person on his way, who again gave him selfless love. And JaeWon almost lost that person which he blames himself again. This is the worst thing that could happen in JaeWon's life: a second chance, a cautious hope for a new life, for a return to his old self, which he almost lost. I'm pretty sure, that among many reasons why JaeWon cuts himself off from JiHyun is because he wants to protect JiHyun, because he thinks he doesn't deserve JiHyun and as a form of punishment for himself for daring to reach for happiness.. And all JaeWon wanted was to take care of his brother and JiHyun. Caring and protecting are JaeWon's natural character traits. And the worst thing is that JaeWon is alone with this burden weighing down on him, because the therapist, although she helps, is not a close person, she cannot be with him all the time, they have appointments :) JaeWon is so completely alone with his trauma, with his guilt and grief for what happened to his brother and what he could have had with JiHyun. And in addition, as if that wasn't enough, his "friends" in recent episodes have outdone themselves to bring down JaeWon EVEN MORE, to add even more burden to him.

I have a lot of feelings for JaeWon, thinking about the tragedy of his life, how his sanity hangs by a thin thread, and how the world seems to have conspired to push his aleady fragile sanity, his mask, and his indredible self control to the limit. 

I'm so worried about tomorrow's episodes... I just want him to be happy 💖

kiki's pedantic gripe w t8s english subs

to preface: i don't mean this in bad faith at all. it is not not my intention to insult anyone who worked on subtitles for t8s, as it's very hard, often thankless work and i think the fact subtitles exist at all is brilliant. it makes the show a hell of a lot more accessible, even if they have their inaccuracies. if anything, i made this post more so as a vehicle to explain korean. everything else just stems from my love for this language, and my criticisms are secondary to that for me... so i hope at least this is slightly informative !!

the pattern i have noticed is the subs will.. mostly communicate the same sentiment? but not just. translate what's being said.??? ..

FOR EXAMPLE

jaewon asks if he can get a cigarette off of jihyun and jihyun replies (i believe, it's a little hard to make out) "저 연 언피워요" = "I don't smoke tobacco."

the '연' here i believe is short for '연초' which is a word for 'tobacco' and as the person in this thread explains (the person who asked the initial question was actually querying the line jihyun says that i am currently talking abt lmfao) people who don't smoke at all say, for example "담배를 안 피워요" = "i don't smoke cigarettes" (including e-cigarettes/vapes), the key word here being '담배' which means 'cigarette'. as the same person goes on to explain, people who vape would tend to specify that they don't smoke tobacco, as they do smoke cigarettes, just not tobacco ones. this would lead us to imply that jihyun vapes, even when translated into english as "I don't smoke tobacco" right?

the way the viki team chose to subtitle this is "I only vape". which i feel illustrates my point quite well. the point is gotten across!! yay!! but it's not what.. he says... like .. in terms of the vocabulary... and to me this choice, as representative of many like it, does a bit of a disservice to korean as a language and to the people that aren't familiar with it. conveying the same sentiment, in my opinion, is not the same as an honest translation, and it frustrates me a little that these subtitles are many peoples' only access to the show.

ships that i think are most likely to elope in vegas with an elvis impersonator officiating the wedding: dsoo (dongho x minsoo), hyuntae (hyunjin (ven) x taeseok), and youngseok (youngjoon x minseok)

dsoo: it's predebut, they're being stupid in vegas to celebrate the fact that they finally got the news that they're going to debut EVENTUALLY, so they get married wearing matching hawaiian button ups. dongho 100% still has the emo bangs when this happens.

hyuntae: idk man. they've got the vibes. if sa1nt went on a US tour and stopped in vegas for some reason, these two are absolutely getting married and minsung is the flower girl.

youngseok: ok i'm definitely biased bc i'm currently writing a fic focused on these two but like. i don't even KNOW how to explain it. i can just very clearly picture dae finding it hilarious that his 2 best friends outside of mayhem got married. with an elvis impersonator.

they'd do it for a bet: mindae (minsoo x daehyun), junjae (jun x jaewon) (lost a bet to nari), any pairing of marshmello, kyungyoung (kyunghun x youngjoon)

mindae: do i really need to say more. anyone even jokingly bets money that they won't get vegas married and they are chomping at the bit to prove that person wrong. absolute menaces (i say this affectionately. they probably give manager choi a headache but i love them)

marshmello: girls' night out gone marriage. i literally cannot decide who would be more likely to get married on a bet?? i feel like they're sort of an unstoppable force when they're together and having a good time.

kyungyoung: they are the same age. probably besties. hyuntae 100% used to torment them about being a couple or some shit. minsung bet them 1k that they wouldn't get married and send photos to hyuntae. kyunghun is not a coward so they got vegas married.

vegas married but only bc they are ELOPING (aka i kinda sorta ship these ones. a lot): daejae (daehyun x jaewon), dongsung (dongho x minsung) (I HAD TO IM SORRY), hyuntae again (hyunjin x taeseok)

daejae: listen if they're dating they are IN LOVE. POWER COUPLE OF THE YEAR. DO NOT SEPARATE. so yeah they'd elope in vegas.

dongsung: they'd be the couple that's secretly been together for a decade or some shit they're emotionally married already they probably have rings ready to go and they have no where else to get married.

hyuntae: either they are the best of friends or they're dating idk how else they would've lasted in sa1nt for so long otherwise. they kinda seem like little gremlins but like. there's something going on between them. let them get gay eloped for funsies.

LETS HAVE AN OMEGA FESTIVAL!

HAPPY ONE YEAR TO OUR OMEGAS AND WELCOME OUR NEW HERO, IRA!

New York City is the city that never sleeps and that never dies, no matter what you throw its way. After what happened in June, the energy was low the first two weeks. The citizens needed time to grieve and heal-- and of course, wait for parts of the city to be fixed. It's a slow and necessary process. There at their sides are the Omegas, the city's heroes help with clean up, fixing buildings, getting cats out of trees, making sure everyone is fine: they're doing their jobs but also just being decent human beings. It warms the hearts of the citizens, all grateful for their team of heroes who have done nothing but protect all of them.

The city's mayor doesn't care much for the Omegas but he does care about making his citizens happy. And what would make them happy? A celebration for their favorite group of heroes of course! It's an Omega Festival held in Central Park, the festival is to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Omegas being formed and to welcome a new member of the team, an individual personally recommended to him by his new acquaintance Linda McCall. There's drinks from local bars, food stands of some fan favorite restaurants, gaming booths such as basketball, darts, duck shoot, and even musical performances from local musicians. It's a day of fun for everyone, so come and enjoy yourself!

HE WAS CARRYING three paper bags from the grocery on his way back to his apartment when he noticed a girl trying to carry boxes. he didn't want to be rude and stare, so he minded his own business. it was somehow amusing to him that they are walking the same way, he supposed that their units are near each other. he gave her one last glance before he fished his keys from his pocket, however he ended up looking at her a little longer when the box she was holding went through her arms. he looked away and sighed because he felt bad for seeing what he shouldn’t. so he cleared his throat and turned his whole body to her direction. “you need help with that?”

the familiar scent of coffee lingered within duri’s nose, sat by a big window. on that day, he decided to visit his uncle’s and aunt’s café, a place that he spent his childhood and teen years in. it had seemed that a lot of times, when a place smelt like nothing but coffee, it had always brought him back to the warm embrace of the café that he grew up in, that he spent a lot of his days in. things still felt the same in the café, even though his uncle and aunt managed to upgrade it to bring it into modern times. maybe it was the energy that made it felt the same. 

he had moose with him on this day, who seemed to not want duri to leave the house on his own. he was laying on the floor, right next to the table, and would wag every time he got a glimpse of duri’s uncle or aunt. but, on this day, duri had invited jaewon out to the café, as it had been a long while since they last saw each other - due to busy schedules and all that. plus, he felt like it would be nice to see jaewon, to remind himself that everything was going to be okay. 

he took a sip of the mocha, placing it down. he looked at moose when he hears a tail hitting the floor, and the large dog getting to his feet, “dancing” a bit. he looked up to see jaewon, giggling softly. “hi, jaewon!” he greets. “it looks like moose is really excited,” he added on. “order whatever you like, it’s on me! don’t let my uncle or aunt tell you otherwise!”

the flight should take close to 4 hours. impulse travels abroad often enough that daesung had already had a good idea of how long it’d take, but he’d still been shocked to hear it. he always is. he’s not an easy traveler and he never has been; his restless energy is hard to contain on a normal day. stick him in one spot for hours on end and it feels impossible. it doesn’t help that it’s christmas, either  —  he’s excited about the holiday, excited about the tour, excited about spending the week in such a lively way. there’s a certain melancholy to it, too, but it hasn’t hit him yet. it only shows in the little things that he does without thinking too much about it, like prying for a conversation from his seatmate and turning to some classic warm-feeling christmas movie on the tiny screen in front of him to keep him company once he realizes that jaewon doesn’t seem all that eager to talk. the search for company, even if it’s in the form of characters on a screen who he can predict with such ease.

he tells himself that the movie is enough, but it really isn’t. he knows it too well, and most of the time, that’d be fine. but now, boredom takes ahold of him. he becomes a little too aware of his headphones pressing unpleasantly against his cartilage earrings and, despite the fact that the piercings have been healed for years now, they begin to ache. the restlessness is too much. so, he glances towards jaewon once again — the poor, unfortunate soul — and upon realizing that he’s miraculously still awake, daesung takes his headphones off completely. “hey,” he whispers to get his attention, not wanting to disturb any of the other sleeping passengers. it is half past two in the morning, after all, and he’s not trying to start his christmas off on a bad foot. “merry christmas. are you excited? it’s kind of... weird to be leaving for a tour on christmas, but... still! it’s exciting, right?”

ash had listened to all of the songs for this round when they’d been released onto streaming sites and made a little game of guessing who he’d thought had written all of the songs. he hadn’t spent too much time on it, because in the long run, it didn’t really matter, but he knew fans would be doing the same and wanted to ponder whether he himself would have narrowed down “girl, interrupted” to being his work.

having seen the songs being performed, his guesses of who might be behind them hadn’t really changed and he’s really not thinking too hard about it anymore when a break is called for them to start pulling people aside to do their post-performance talking heads. ash excuses himself to get some water, but when he spots jaewon out in the hallway as well, he can’t help his curiosity getting the best of him and he takes a detour from his water trip to the other man’s side. “it’s interesting so far to do it like this, huh? i mean, i have my guesses for who wrote all of them, but the first one’s got me kinda stumped."

she's finally won something that recognises her own composing and writing abilities in her life and for once, youngjoo finds herself unable to say something. shock plays a part in all of this, even as she dazedly acknowledges the fact that she has won, something else prickles in the back of her mind as her eyes flickers over everyone else a little uncomfortably. should she rejoice? or should she just keep mum and quiet to herself about her success?

she hesitates ever so slightly as jaewon catches her eyes, almost flinching as she watches him blankly stare into space for a spare moment, knowing through her own experience how devastating it must have been for him to have just barely made it through.

oh god. she was really not that good at this.

but still, compassion drives her out of her seat after the cameras turn off for a brief moment to slide into the seat next to jaewon.

"hey." she wonders if she'd be seen as patronising--after all, she'd just gotten a good result, while jaewon hadn't. would he be receptive to her tentative asking him if he was okay? a breath trembled in her chest as she lightly shook her head, trying to shake away all her worries. "i know this may not be something you'd like to hear now but..are you okay?" she murmured softly.
