my uncle is very upset about ranked choice voting being a thing here, so he voted for one candidate only in protest.
him: if my candidate gets eliminated, then my vote didn’t matter and i become a disenfranchised voter.
me: but you chose to vote for a single candidate, so any disenfranchisement you feel is because you purposefully chose to ignore the set rules of the voting process to avoid proper representation. there are people who don’t even get to experience that much, because they are turned away from the voting process entirely.
him: there were no other candidates i wanted to vote for! so why would i cast votes for someone i didn’t like?
me: except that if there has been, would you have not used ranked choice to cast those two other votes for candidates you did support?
him: well, yeah, probably —
me: so what you’re admitting to me, to be clear: when there are less than three candidates you wholly agree with, you believe this process does not work and you are not being represented by the process and want it removed. but when there are threw candidates who represent your views, you have no qualms utilizing said system you just said disenfranchises you as a voter to institute representatives that better align with your far right perspective? you realize you cannot claim that you oppose rcv on the grounds it is not working when you’re utilizing it to full capacity only part of the time, that is delusional levels doublethinking
him: you’re not understanding at all —
me: no, no, i am
him: i regret raising you to care about these things, because you’re always wrong
me: am i tho
