9.75/10 i like it (high-ish end) dat score blind rating: 1/5 social/racial matters presented? were the bodies at the end the unburied Bucurau people? names & pronunciations correctional officer at a prison vs human resources at grocery store tried to shoot wife, store, and then park? Thanks, God the whore was never seen again after returning? fuck the mayor Lunga was pulling the trigger the whole time, wth?
The score and lack of it. The racial matters presented. 👌🏿 The presentation of the townspeople and their regular lives. The way they valued their history (e.g.: "We'll clean it all up good and scrub the floor. But leave the walls as they are."). Lunga's style and Teresa & Domingas' hair. The fact that I'm still questioning Lunga's gender. The presentation of the "civilized" folk. How this was basically The Most Dangerous Game with a happy ending.
(MAJOR SPOILERS)
From a discussion I took part in after
Ah, The dinner table conversation before SHTF. Domingas' polyamorous relationship. Lunga's forefinger was fully pressed against his revolver's trigger while he pointed it at Michael (the German-American) near the very end of the film. Maybe I don't know enough about guns, but that's a clear sign it's either out of ammo or needs to have the hammer re-cocked, which it already was. Took me out of the film enough to drop its score down to 9.75/10. >.> The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, which has film adaptations. Really enjoyed the book in high school. The whole "game" is an allegory of civilized people's obsession with hunting wild animals for sport. One of them made it blatantly clear when he confessed to his peers what he planned to do to his wife after their divorce and, upon realizing she wasn't in town, couldn't bring himself to do to complete strangers at grocery stores or parks. Dude thanked the "person upstairs" for making him wait so he could do it in Brazil instead. Add to this the fact that one of them explained to the "tourists" what they did to the farmers was totally different because they used vintage guns,... which now that I think about it are also what the townspeople used (e.g.: Winchester 44). There's something about the mayor selling out the entire town to foreigners' bloodthirsty pleasure that I fail to put words to. His statement "We'll all pay for this. Even I'll die for this." after realizing the foreigners were killed makes me wonder how deep that rabbit hole goes. Add to that the fact that Forasteiro (the male "tourist") was a judge assistant tasked with helping them. Classism? Maybe it's just good ol' racism. Meh.

Some Most Dangerous Game shit w/a happy ending. History tells all; they are peaceful but fully capable of violence. Kept the guns in the museum and used 'em when needed. Scrub the floors but leaving the walls as is; history. Higher power telling him to relieve himself in Brazil instead of US; hell of a statement about civilized Euros. Digging the soundtrack. Face fucking gone; surprised they helped her. The judge assistant not killing his own; thinking he's White like them; Latino. Crazy German-American. The whole game is an allegory of civilized people's obsession w/hunting wild animals for "sport". If I did a review, the subtitle would be “Dealing with Savages”
