fox rolls a 12. +3 dexterity modifier. sleight of hand specialization +2. proficiency bonus +2 sleight of hand +4 fox scores 19. FAILURE.

 “oh,   i've got it,”   said the fox.   he already had his lock picks out,  two between deft fingers.    “watch and learn.”   it's one of the few things he's taken pride in.   card games are one thing.   locks are another.   a thrilling another.

a complex lock boasting seven pins,   but one he was certain he could best.   he'd faced worse,   hadn't he?   no,  all he had to do was insert his lockpick and wrench and carefully manipulate the pins.   he tested it once,   mentally mapping out the order of the pins.

no tension on the first pin.  no tension on the second.  he carefully applied pressure to the third until it gave way with a click.   perfect.   the first pin gave way just the same.  then the fourth.  then the sixth pin.  the second.   then the fifth   ----

nothing?   he frowned,   testing the order again. three.  one.  four.  six.  two.  five. nothing. he checked the other pins.  and it was going so well?   “piece of shit,”   he muttered.   “come on.” he checked the order again,  this time with a different pick.   that should have been right.   right?    “fucking door   ---” annoyed,   mortified,   he gave it a shove.  as expected,   nothing.

he glanced at the other man with a nervous laugh.   couldn't a man show off without   ...   without that?  no fucking way.  “i,   uh.   i think it's enchanted.”  it has to be!
