In his years stationed in Setauket, he had never thought he would promise his heart to another. Marriage was never something he dreaded or thought of as something that he wasnโt capable of, but with his familyโs mounting debt, it was the last thing on his mind. Until Anna Strong came along. Then when that fell through and he looked upon the married couples walking the city street, he wouldnโt have thought that he would get another chance here in the colonies. Scotland, perhaps. But that changed when Patience walked back into his life, a woman he grew to have a friendship with and now a woman he grew to love.
ย ย ย ย ย Edmund figured she was asleep still until he felt a light touch drift over his arm. He looked down, clearing his throat as he readied himself to speak. The touch persisted again, it seemed to grow in more intensity that he couldnโt swat away as his own desires clouded his judgment.
ย ย ย ย ย โ Patience, โ he spoke her name in a low, hoarse voice, clearing his throat again as he began to slowly move towards her, his mouth right by her ear. โ Are you feeling alright? โ It seemed stupid to ask as desire thrums within him, but Edmund canโt figure out what else to say. He seemed to forget what to say when he was around Patience sometimes. At least, he managed to say something. She always seemed to understand what he was feeling without him needing to say it.

ย ย ย ย Caleb Brewster may be exiled from Setauket with his leanings and role in Washingtonโs Army, and no less for his questionable deals on the London Trade, but there was a time and place for such rash action. Edmund tried to sway from the violent, reckless kind Simcoe seemed to pursue. It was quite obvious to Edmund, in both hindsight and at that moment, that the man struck with palsy had no place in the poisoning of his horse. It was instead all thanks to the devil in green in front of him.

The voice is unfamiliar and he can only assume itโs from the redcoat eyeing him a couple of blocks back and decided to follow him, consequently finding him in this darkened alley with his back turned. The secret pocket in the arm of his black jacket is closed as well as the curling parchment full of scribbles and jotted down numbers and Abe takes a breather before he would meet the man face to face.
ย ย ย ย Fear sits tightly inside his chest and the weight presses down on him like an anchor, keeping him rooted in his place. A breath loosens his stiff joints and he finally turns around to meet not a redcoat, but a tall, broad man that was more unknown to him. He wasnโt wearing an ugly red uniform of the Kingโs Army that always made a young boyโs reddened cheeks more prominent, no, he preferred a white outfit instead.
ย ย ย ย If heโs not a redcoat, was he here to rob him?
ย ย ย ย His words slither into his mind again and it makes the hair stand up on the back of his pale neck. Despite this, a polite and friendly smile is drawn upon his lips as he raises his hands as if to surrender and to feign innocence.
ย ย ย ย โ You were looking for me? โ he raises a brow at this and places his hands on his hips, the pressure of the knife tucked away in his sleeve reminding him that wasnโt unarmed. Itโs what led to large families after all. Generations of marriages, births, and more that led to where he stood today. But something was embarrassing about it.ย Where would he start?ย He had a few ideas in mind, but his inexperience sounded pathetic to his own ears.ย
ย ย ย ย ย On their wedding night, Edmund stared at her reflection in the mirror of the vanity. There is an unspoken expectation here that heโs almost fearful to speak about. If only because of the discomfort it can give his arranged wife.ย
ย ย ย ย ย โ I hope you find the room alright. Weโll be staying here for the time being. Iโll be assisting Major Andre. Then, once Iโm finished with my responsibilities here, weโll be traveling to Setauket, Long Island. Are you familiar with the place? โ It was always easy to speak of work and his duties. He could hear himself fall into the consistent rhythm of formality, the place his voice often dipped to when he was speaking with his fellow officers. He fidgeted with his robe and looked over at Marisa again.ย
ย ย ย ย ย โ Do youโฆ figure we should? โ He finds himself cutting off his words with pauses and stutters, a rosy complexion rushing over his cheeks at the mere thought of broaching the subject of intimacy. โ You are aware of how wedding nights go, Marisa? โย But she doesnโt have to. She doesnโt need to.ย
ย ย ย ย ย He cleared his throat and then fully turned himself towards her. โ It's not required of us, you know. Iโm content retiring for the night and figuring out the details tomorrow morning. โ Maybe heโll figure out how to not trip over his own tongue by that point, too.

Still married, yet no husband in sight, in the middle of a city with a particular redcoat on the prowl with a spy thatโs also on his tail -- York City was not the exciting getaway it was years ago with the turn of the war. It seemed with each day, with each return, the city that once held Edmundโs awe had darkened as it was clear the British werenโt as powerful as once imagined. They were losing their grip on the colony and while Edmund stayed true to his King, he had learned of the snakes that had tainted his own side: the officials who laughed behind his back and the unchecked brutality that ran rampant. Anna had a right to be fearful, but he was afraid he couldnโt offer much in terms of safety. With Abraham close by, with Simcoe recognizing Edmund in the coffeehouse, either men were bound to seek him out again and Anna might be wedged in the middle once again.
ย ย ย ย ย A deep sinking feeling had taken hold of his gut when he saw her at his doorway and his grip tightened on his office door. Had she been looking for him? Hasnโt she done enough in their last meeting? If she could easily lie to his face and couldnโt give her own truth, he didnโt see why he had to take her pleas into account.
ย ย ย ย ย But this wasnโt the kind of man Edmund was. Looking into her wide, brown eyes, he felt a tug on his sympathy and with it, resurfaced his wish to protect her from harm. To protect her from Simcoe, from the mess the cabbage farmer often pulled her into. Willingly, or not.
ย ย ย ย ย He opened his mouth to breathe out a sigh and stepped back in the doorway. He opened the door further to allow her entry, giving her a broader view of his new office. It was smaller than the room he was given at Whitehall.
ย ย ย ย ย โ You may come in, โ he lowly admitted her entry and turned on his heel to return behind his desk. As he sorted through his papers and stuffed them into various drawers, he was quiet until in the middle of the tense, silent air, he asked her a question.ย
ย ย ย ย ย โ Is there a reason why you traveled to York City? โ There are familiar faces here and not all of them are friendly.

ย ย ย ย ย Despite Edmundโs arrival to the colonies was made by an act of desperation to keep his familyโs finances afloat, even with the revolution at everyoneโs doorstep, Edmundโs outlook had been optimistic at the start. However long this war may go on, Edmund would stick to it as a testament to his King and as long as his parents needed him here, but it seemed at every corner he turned, the bright, optimistic view he harbored, in the beginning, drew darker and darker. The colonies were in turmoil from the revolution, but that ill will and madness seemed to infect those on his side as well. Led by his gullible broken heart, Edmund was quick to find himself in a similar situation to the last with Mrs. Wright, and this time, he didnโt know if he should toy with the idea of โloveโ any longer. Love would only be in daydreams, in fairy tales and novels, and within his mother's reassurances that it was still attainable for him; life was too cruel for a fleeting emotion to remain permanent.
ย ย ย ย ย This time, he harbored no anger, instead, all he felt was disappointment in himself. He shouldโve known better than get himself tangled in another relationship.
ย ย ย ย ย His finger stilled in its glide over the top of the envelope in his hands. The thought of heading out the door and sending the letter to his mother left his mind as his lips thinned, pressing his lips together in his contemplation. His loveโs words hung in the air, yet he couldnโt piece together what to say in return. He had run from Setauket, from his failure of a wedding, and now here he was in York City with another woman that occupied his thoughts just as much as Mrs. Strong did. If not, more. He could only run so far, but even that didnโt seem to serve him.
ย ย ย ย ย He looked up and it took more strength than he imagined to look Patience in the eye.
ย ย ย ย ย โ I wish you wouldโve told me sooner, too, Mrs. Wright. โ

It was her eyes that held it the most and he looked onward with a frown pulling on his lips as she moved to the bed, sinking into the cot as if she hadn't had a chance to sit down in months.
ย ย ย ย ย His inquiry was a soft one, a touch above a whisper but not high enough to extinguish a candleโs flame. At first, he assumed maybe it was a consequence of Richard nagging her again that made her look so beaten down, but then he realized from her attire that it was another matter entirely. She wasnโt dressed in her fine gowns, a few skinny wisps of hair were loosened from her pinned-up hair, and her hands were redder than usual. Then, his accusatory thoughts pointed to another man.
ย ย ย ย ย โ Is it Simcoe? โ
ย ย ย ย ย He drew away from the loosened clothing chest and crossed the bedroom floor, allowing his body to sink into a spot next to her on the bed. He didnโt reach out to touch her even if he wanted nothing more than to cradle her face, push back the strands of hair, and really behold her. He feared that if he touched her, she would shatter like glass. โ Has heโฆ has he visited you? Simcoe? โ Edmund couldnโt dial back the way his voice quickened at the mere thought of it. He could imagine Simcoe standing in her doorway, ordering her to stay put and not return to Whitehall. To him. Edmund knew that John was capable of killing DeJong or anyone he wanted to get to corner what he desired most. With his men trying to control the town under Hewlettโs hold, the killing of DeJong would be nothing more than an accident. A man like him was destined to have enemies, he could hear his shrill voice in the night.
ย ย ย ย ย A relieved sigh left his lips at the fact DeJong was very much still alive. Not so much for his sake, but for Annaโs. Even if the tavern belonged to DeJong now, it was still a relief that Anna still had her position in his tavern with the tensions brewing in town upon the devil in greenโs return. It was until Edmund noticed she was looking at him that her inquiry reached him.
ย ย ย ย ย โ Iโm fine, thank you. โ His voice softened then and he got to his feet, extending a hand if she needed help to stand. โ Aberdeen should still be in the kitchen at this hour. She should be able to make a meal for you there. Please, Anna, you canโt go to bed on an empty stomach. โ

Do they think they are a bad person?: โWell, he is certainly an enemy to the British Army, a rebel no doubt in his beliefs, but aside from that: no, I donโt believe it is right to call Benjamin Tallmadge a bad person. Iโve seen more barbaric people that violence outweighs that of the Major. Mr. Tallmadge at least takes fairness and mortality into consideration for his actions.โ
Do they think theyโre a good person?: โGood is subjective. I disagree with his beliefs, but from what Iโve observed of the Major, he is a gentleman.โ (It hurts his brain to call him a โgood person with his whole rebel belief).
Do they find them attractive?:ย โOh heavens no. Ben is agreeable to the right company, but not to my eye.โ
Are they a friend or foe?:ย โA foe, but I would wish to stray from a battle with the man if avoidable.โ (Hewlett wishes he could call him a friend but the war makes this whole friend or foe discussion complicated).
Save or kill?:ย โI believe Ben deserves to be met with mercy, but if he ever wishes to strike on Setauket and to hold it under his control than that of the King, violent action will be taken.โ
Kiss or diss?: โI would politely decline.

There were moments in his military career when sleep was hard to come by; days when all he could do was stare at the ceiling in the morning, so tired and worn, to where it was a tiring task in itself to rip the sheets off of his body. But the chance to see a star-filled sky, the relief of retiring to his office after a hearty dinner, and a chance to meet some of the good people of Setauket strengthened his movements. Now, in this dreary room and in this house that was too big for a single person, it wasnโt the same. He would come across many forgetful faces in his day-to-day work, there was no incentive to try to make conversation with his fellow officers when he learned of their gossiping behind his back. He was too naive to notice when he was in Setauket that he resembled somewhat of a respectable figure than a man who took a beloved dead manโs job.ย
ย ย ย ย Also, there was a noticeable difference. Edmund wasnโt needed anymore; his purpose was already spent as real intelligence hardly trickled in by this turn in the war. The King was losing and loyalists were already packing their belongings for a trip across the pond to Britain or its neighboring countries.
ย ย ย ย He climbed the stairs to his office and the wood under his feet creaked at every step. He tucked a book in between his arm, pressing it tightly to his side as he took each step until he reached the top. His job had grown so boring and his days had been drawn out so long that he decided to fall back into his habit of reading. In Whitehall, he found the time to read, but it was minimal in comparison to now. All he had to do was forge intelligence reports to almost prove his position was worthy.
ย ย ย ย As he walked down the long hallway, he paused before twisting the knob of the door. Yes, he always shut the door when he left, but he swore he could hear shuffling inside. If it was a rat running across the floor, he imagined it would be much quieter in the daytime. No, this was someone and Edmundโs stomach clenched at the idea of his ruse being found out. Somehow, someone saw through his forged reports, and spotted the inconsistency of the claims, despite intelligence being mostly word of mouth most times. He only feared the worst.
ย ย ย ย He opened the door and his eyes fell upon not one of his officers, but rather, a blonde head of curls of a woman. Surely, if someone was sent here to tell him of his double-crossing, it would be a man dressed in red. Arnold or Clinton for that matter and the secrecy surrounding it would be worthless. But not Philomena Cheer.
ย ย ย ย โ Miss Cheer.ย โ One could hear a huff in between his words as his mouth twisted into a small frown. โ What is the meaning of this? โ Edmund was sure that Miss. Cheer hadnโt reached out to him beforehand to meet with him, which only made him wonder why she stood on the other side of his desk. Exactly where he would stand if they were in a meeting.

annastrxng asked :ย ๐ Annlett?
Send me ๐ย and Iโll plan our museโs wedding. / @annastrxngโโโ -- accepting
How did our muses get engaged? Hewlett brought it up after a night star gazing in the heat of the moment, not realizing what he said at first but he felt it was straight from his heart and genuine. He didnโt expect Anna was going to agree, believing he mightโve overstepped at first with how short itโs been since her husband was gone.
How long were they engaged before they got married? I would say a reasonable time, it didnโt matter to him how long he had to wait for the wedding, only that they were actually going to get married. A few months maybe?
Who is in the wedding party? Iโd imagine itโs probably relevantly small, Abe was invited but he didnโt show up because he's a jealous cabbage patch boy. Richard is there, maybe Mary and Thomas, but it was a small gathering of some of Hewlettโs friends (like Wakefield for example), and whoever Anna wanted to invite.
What is the wedding venue? This is going to be a bit of a drift from t.urnโs canon but itโs the garrison, all cleaned up and decorated for their wedding. Then maybe they have a party at Whitehall afterward.
What are our muses wearing? Hewlett is wearing his military uniform with a special pin on his jacket for the event, Anna is wearing her best dress.
Whatโs the theme/aesthetic? There is some floral decorating in the garrison but the mood is happy and joyful for Hewlett & Anna but I feel like there is some tense feeling there with Richardโs dislike of Anna, Abeโs jealousy, Maryโs disagreement with Anna and her actions, and some of the communityโs view of her.ย
A special gift that my muse gives to yours before the wedding: Hewlett gave Anna a bracelet & a bouquet and sent one of his men to give it to her, wishing to adhere to the tradition of seeing the bride on the wedding day.
Where are they going on their honeymoon? Scotland maybe? Or York City for a visit? They might travel to both places with Hewlett wishing to speak to Andre for a moment before going to visit his family in Scotland. He mostly wants to show Anna some of the views there and have her meet his family.
