long time no text post, but oh my goodness i just wanted to gather my thoughts on lupinranger vs patranger because it’s reignited my love for super sentai www

if you guys follow me on twitter, then you’ll probably have seen most of this lol but i wanted to put everything into a semi-coherent post so without further ado i’ll be throwing my ramblings under the read more haha

i guess i’ll just preface this with saying that this is gonna be a mix of analyzing, headcanons, speculation, and me going “AAAAAAAAA” and will be pretty long ehe

haha anyways, i was verrryyy cautiously optimistic about this show -- still am, since it’s still in the first cour, but i’ve been very pleased with what we’ve been getting so far -- but i??? just don’t even know where to begin

the very concept of two opposing sentai teams is such a novel idea in the first place and so far the dynamic has been really fun to watch! i love both teams, though i have to admit i am just a biiit more into the pats haha

oh jeez, first off all, i love how well the teams parallel each other?? i’m sure kairi // keiichiro, touma // sakuya, and umika // tsukasa are noticeable so i won’t really get into it, but there’s also another way the teams act as parallels

okay so when the teams line up, the pats are tsukasa, keiichiro, and sakya; when the lupins line up, they’re touma, kairi, and umika. in this way, you can see another set of foils!!

kairi // keiichiro stay the same since they’re in the middle, but now we also have touma // tsukasa and sakuya // umika. touma and tsukasa are both the eldest of their teams and the most mature; touma is also described as “cold” and tsukasa is a “cool beauty” haha. sakuya and umika are both the youngest of their teams and also the most naive and least experienced

(also fun fact the pats are lined up shortest to tallest; the lupins tallest to shortest -- they literally mirror each other!)

and can i talk about how the team dynamics are kinda parallel each other?? because wow!! keiichiro and tsukasa know each other pretty well -- i’m not sure how close they would consider themselves, but they have a history since they spent time together in the police academy. personally, i see them as having a sort of supportive sibling kind of relationship and ground each other. then we have sakuya, who we can consider the outsider of the dynamic since he’s the youngest and least experienced

meanwhile with the lupins, kairi and umika are closer in age than with touma, which probably makes interactions with each other easier. i sorta see them as having one of those teasing, bantering sibling-like relationships (to contrast keiichiro and tsukasa’s haha). and then there’s touma, who’s a bit of an outsider in this dynamic since he’s the eldest and doesn’t necessarily have the same mentality as them

and goodness...!! i think the possible dynamics and interactions are so interesting!!

*wheezes* i’ve been trying to refrain from jumping onto ships this early, but... i’m like completely down for kairi/keiichiro --

shipping aside, i’m sure their dynamic will be explored throughout the show since they’re both the reds. i can totally see something like keiichiro eventually becoming an older brother figure to kairi in place of shori, but eventually keiichiro learns about who kairi really is and feels Betrayed TwT or perhaps kairi befriends keiichiro in order to gain more intel but eventually starts caring about him and is faced with a Moral Dilemma haha

nonetheless, i love how already we can see kairi and keiichiro slowly gaining respect for each other?? it’s more apparent with kairi -> keiichiro, since we see the moments where he stops and goes “huh... mr. hot blooded policeman isn’t so bad.” meanwhile, keiichiro is still learning to see that everything isn’t so black and white, what with how episode 6 ended, and i absolutely cannot wait for the day they team up together!!

umika/sakuya is also another dynamic i’m on the look out for! omg it’s like... on one hand, i can feel umika for being internal screams whenever sakuya tries to talk to her, but i’m also down if they do become a couple. at the very least, sakuya seems respectful of umika and i’m glad for that -- he just doesn’t know how to be subtle about his feelings LOL but considering how things are now, i can see their relationship being like umika slowly gaining respect for sakuya and maybe eventually returning his feelings

i think something that would be cute would be if sakuya also fell for lupin yellow and was sort of “stuck” between them hehe either way, i could see sakuya taking a hit for umika (either while she’s a civilian or lupin yellow) and that could lead to umika changing her perspective on him www

but in the meantime, i am forever amused at how kairi just gives umika this shit-eating grin every time sakuya comes in to the bistro; i bet he teases her about sakuya’s crush on her all the time haha

touma and tsukasa is a ship i’d totally be down for if touma wasn’t so dedicated to aya haha but!! i think, once the teams start working together, touma and tsukasa could possibly get along. i can see them being the exasperated parents, bonding over how much shit they have to deal with from their teammates haha

though... i’m not eliminating the possibility of touma/tsukasa --

could you imagine that, once they get to know each other better, tsukasa starts reminding touma of aya?? maybe in her mannerisms and beliefs, but wow, that would be heartbreaking haha

(man, just in general, i tend to gravitate towards cross-team pairings so that probably influences how i see things lol)

man, i’d also love to see tsukasa become like an older sister to umika and kairi?? haha idk, i think it’d be cute for them to call her “tsukasa-nee” and tsukasa looking out for them ;w; and also i want touma and sakuya to have moments together, mainly because i want sakuya to act over enthusiastically around him (”touma-san!!”) and touma to be like “wtf get lost” hahaha

omgggg, i know the whole point of the show is that the teams oppose each other, but i am completely ready for the day they join together *clenches fist*

and the characters!! are just so much fun ;w; i love all of them, but right now i think my faves are tsukasa and keiichiro. tsukasa is just highkey Relatable, being the mature one with deep dark secret of liking cute things hehe but i do hope we get to see more development from her, and i love love love how intuitive she is and how she was able to get a hunch about who the lupins really are. and keiichiro, he... had me at “ONORE KAITOU” lol but episode 6 really cemented how much i love him, he’s just so passionate and dedicated to his job?? sure, he’s reckless but i respect that he’s willing to keep himself in check. and like, underneath all the hot-bloodedness, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and very loyal ;u;

umika is also making her way up my faves, especially with episode 7?? her backstory is so sad, i wish i could hug her ;u; and to me... she seems to exhibit symptoms of PTSD, seeing how she froze up after seeing kairi get eaten by the gangler and it reminding her of shiho ;o; i’m really proud of her though, for being able to get through her hardships and come up with a plan all on her own! hhh, i’m really looking forward to seeing everyone develop really!!

and aaaaaa omg, the cast themselves is perfect?? if you follow me on twitter, you probably see me gushing about them all the time haha but they seem to get along so well and have a lot of fun with each other -- there’s that chemistry among them and it really shows on screen! ;w;

i’d also like to talk about the OST, like... i’m forever sad that there’s no ED, but the OP, derivatives of it, and the BGM is amazing. i remember listening to the previews of “chase you up” and “spin the dial” and thought that, though they sounded nice, there was something lacking. then i heard the complete OP and my jaw literally dropped at hearing the two songs combined to create the OP -- it felt complete, like both teams complete each other ashdfsd

speaking of which, i think i prefer “chase you up” to “spin the dial” but when it comes to the BGM, i prefer the lupins’ theme hehe. something i found really neat in the lupins’ theme is that there’s this section that sounds like the “HA-SHI-RE~ HA-SHI-RE~” part from the OP and... idk if it really means much, i just love it when i can hear familiar motifs haha

hhh thanks if you read all this haha sentai has always been my fave toku series but i felt like recent years have been lackluster since go-busters?? of course, i enjoyed some of the past few years, like toq and zyuoh, but i didn’t feel that same passion i did when i first got into sentai. i was worried that maybe i was “getting too old” or maybe just falling out of love, but!! i’m so happy with lupinpat so far and i’m excited to be excited about sentai again ;w;

Mighty Brother's "Naked Winter" is A Timely Release for Current Anxious Times

New Orleans band, Mighty Brother, recently released a music video for their single “Naked Winter” as a tease to their upcoming double album (The Rabbit. The Owl.), due in Summer 2020. "Naked Winter" immediately evokes a feeling of angst and foreboding, establishing the haunting, indie vibes that define the second side of their upcoming double album. The song is a slow-burner, but once the groove drops in, Mighty Brother takes us on a climatic journey, the apex of which features a wailing sax solo and the grittiest bass wah you’ve ever heard. “Naked Winter” captures familiar feelings of isolation, uncertainty about the future, and the feeling of being held hostage by uncontrollable forces such as the media (and, more relatively, the coronavirus), all while artfully exploring the band’s unique genre-bending style. We sat down with Mighty Brother to talk about their band's humble beginnings, new music video, and what's next for the dynamic group.

How did Mighty Brother get started as a band? Mighty Brother began as a duo songwriting project of Nick Huster and Ari Carter in Bloomington, IN, and quickly grew into a five-piece indie rock outfit based out of New Orleans. We started making music together in 2015. Ari likes to point to a moment after we had first jammed and shared some of our songs that he woke up hiking in Denali National Park, Alaska with one of Nick’s songs stuck in his head as the “aha’ moment for starting the band. After he returned from that hiking trip, we got to work on our first album. Where does the name 'Mighty Brother' come from? What does it stand for? The name came from “Dearly Beloved,” one of our early co-writes. “Mighty Brother” appears in the lyrics, and we felt it both a strong name and one that hinted at something greater than the sum of its parts. "Naked Winter" is a release from your upcoming double album..... what made you decide to release a double album? Short answer, we’re interested in music that creates an immersive listening experience. But we could go on… As writers, we both like long-form stories and world-building (think LOTR, Dune, Game of Thrones, etc.), so when we set out to write an album, we hinge on a concept and let that inform what we create. In a listening culture dominated by singles, we just kind of wanted to push back on that. If you’d like the full story of this particular concept... The Rabbit and the Owl first appeared as characters on the cover of our debut album Jettison. Reprise. We saw them as unlikely friends, predator and prey, the king of the night and jester of the day, and decided to place them on a simple, equal plane. Folks would ask, "So, who is the Rabbit and who is the Owl, and what do they represent?" Over time, the personification of these two contrasting characters grew, as did their stories. Certain tunes became characteristically more "Owl"-esque, while others were clearly the playful and energetic "Rabbit" shining through. Naturally, we ran with it (or took it too far), until a double album became the only clear and viable solution. Thus our upcoming Double Album: The Rabbit. The Owl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEB9ouscstw&feature=emb_title What's your favorite lyrical line in "Naked Winter"? “Yet tarried she along the yawning frozen fringes fair with Venus in her hair…” That line calls back to the moment of the song's conception, as the sun was setting over a frozen lake, and the light sort of just hung there. You could see Venus beaming through the naked branches of the trees along the icy fringes. There was a profound stillness that lives between the lines of that stanza. What I love most about the lyrics and the song format, is how they allude a sense of motion without moving. There is action in the lyrics, the sun is setting, the world is getting colder and darker, but there’s something beautiful about that. The main action is observing this, and we get the sense that no direct action follows, concluding with the words “silence where it sings” where we just want to shout into the void! Musically, the song cycles back on itself and repeats this refrain over and over again, building each time, driving forward each time, but with no real release: motion without moving. How did the idea for the music video come about? The music video, from concept to shooting, came together in the course of one whirlwind week last December. Ari and I had the idea of making a music video with an analog TV grid and digital mapping but had no idea where to start. When we contacted Bruno Doria and Worklight Pictures to chat about the concept, he revealed that they were, in fact, working on an analog TV installation already and that this would be the perfect push to pull it together. Following that chat, we crafted the video concept and narrative with our director Bruno Doria. We filmed the video about a week after first contact. Ari and I got together for a whole day and wrote out the narrative and scenes we wanted to capture. The driving themes we wanted to explore were isolation and media feedback cycles / fake news. We wanted to craft this sort of "blind leading the blind" metaphor and how that can escalate and fall apart. In this case it's mute leading the blind leading the tortured and finally (after an epic sax solo) finding some sort of liberation. It's tough times and we need to be really mindful of our bias and our voice and how we treat each other. That's at least what this video means to me, and I'm really proud of how it came out.

What do you hope the single conveys to fans? That we’re back! It’s been a little over two years since we released new music, so we’re hoping this new single is a good reintroduction to the band. We’ve been playing a lot of shows and working really hard on the double album, and we are ready to bring it to life! We hope that this single gives fans a taste of what the second side of the double album, The Owl., is all about. We can’t wait to turn that on its head when we release a single from The Rabbit. side of the record! What can fans expect next? We will be putting out a couple more singles before the album release this Summer. This is a very difficult time to be an artist, and we feel lucky to have new music to share while we’re all waiting to see what the next few months hold. We’ve had to alter our release schedule a lot with canceled shows and tours, but we plan to continue bringing our music to folks via live streams, and we are pushing to release more music sooner than later. How have you been affected by the global pandemic? Do you have a message for folks during the crisis? We mostly miss performing, and we really feel for our fellow musicians, artists, and hospitality workers during this time. Mordred was going to show up regardless just due to their friendship. It’s been mentioned several times, and glanced at a distance in Their Guiding Light. They’re almost opposites, which creates an interesting dynamic when the two are allowed to simply interact. He’s the anchor that keeps Mordred from going completely wild, and she’s the force that’s pushing him from being overly docile. Whether they like it or not, since their interactions in London, their intricacies influence each other in a subtle manner.

As stated, I don’t follow the fandom’s popular ideas blindly, though it does have a subtle influence on small scenes or concepts. Look hard enough and there are some meme references on occasion. I will admit that the idea of an ambiguous Mordred/Jekyll has been floating around since I introduced their friendship way back in Fragment 13. It was both London, and a strange explosion of supposed fanart, that sparked the idea. I simply leave it ambiguous at this point.

We’re dealing with someone that, in a sense, has a dual personality. Of course Gilles would make another appearance as well considering his own backstory. I felt it gave proper reflection and served as a nice mirror for both of them. I tried to make it seem like Jekyll was convincing himself by talking to Gilles, but I refrained from being overly blunt about it.

Besides Mordred, Hyde was the other guarantee for an appearance. They’re in the same body, so of course he would appear. Unlike what was shown in “A Study in the Color of Ravens’ Feathers” (Official work which I highly recommend reading), I decided to let Hyde take a spectator-style back seat instead of constant whispers. I created the idea he could simply set up a meeting with Jekyll if he wanted to discuss anything, though from the doctor’s perspective it would be more like berating.

I wanted him to be crazed, but not absolutely insane. He does what he wants for ephemeral pleasure, even more so than Drake, but that doesn’t mean he’s an idiot. He knows what’s going on and what he has to do to get “let out” more often to do as he pleases. It’s like a game of mental checks and balances, so while he does hate Jekyll, he knows he has to cooperate with him on some regard. Where this unique sort of partnership will lead will only develop form here, but I have at least set the building blocks for them.

He’s also the best asset to point out blatantly what he refuses to acknowledge. It’s ironic that the evil within he had refused to accept is now trying to make him accept other ideas, like a pseudo-snowball effect.

A bunch of the Prototype servants were mentioned, but not shown, to be directly involved with Jekyll. Besides Paracelsus, Arash is also supposed to be good friends with the assassin, though I’m saving their interactions for his fragment instead. There was also the two mentions of proto-Arthur so readers could get a general idea of what others knew of him in Chaldea.

Overall, it’s a very straight forward fragment to read. No real subtle intricacies, which made it an ideal follow up after Kiyohime’s addition. Next week we have Serenity’s chapter, and as stated, it is OC heavier than the usual. It doesn’t happen often, but they do get some spotlight… and for very good reason next week.

Final Note: For those who don’t recall correctly, if you watch the rabbit scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Gawain is one of the knights who gets his ass handed to him by the fluffy thing. You can see why Gawain is a little jumpy around Fou now.
