Titleist TSR Drivers for 2023

Following on the 2019 TS model and the 2021 TSi model the newest drivers from Titleist are the TSR2, TSR3 and TSR4 with improved aerodynamics featuring a “boat tail” trailing edge for less drag on downswing.

WYNTK The new TSRs debuted the last week in June at the PGA Tour Travelers Championship and the TSR3 quickly was adopted by the greatest number of players on Tour, finishing the year as the most played driver.

The designation TSR is no secret, “Titleist Speed Redefined,” and they have a couple of features that are very interesting. First is the extension of the crown to the rear, a so-called “boat tail” which and performs two functions. It creates a more even air flow over the clubhead on the downswing not unlike a rear spoiler on an automobile while providing a low drag location to place the rear weights each TSR model has.

The newly design variable thickness face interior of the TSR2 and TSR4 is built inward in discrete layers to produce similar rebound characteristics over the entire surface, an aid to those of us that don’t always hit the center of the face every swing. The TSR3 since it is targeted for those players who do tend to have impact in the center most of the time has a different design face, a Speed Ring, which gives the maximum rebound allowed in the face sweet spot. As we know the better the impact the better the ball speed and better the distance.

Note the $599 price is a $50 increase over the preceding TSi models and as of now Titleist’s driver stable still contains the ultralight TSi1 driver from 2021 for slower swing speed players.

Low-Spin Driver from Titleist

The New TS4

Titleist’s line for the 2019 season especially the TS2 and TS3 drivers were products of the Titleist Speed project, an internal program to maximize ball speed. The new design has paid benefits making Titleist drivers the most played on the PGA Tour and helped to remove the “too short and too much spin” reputation of earlier models especially the 917D.

Whether the feeling that Titleist couldn’t be competitive distance-wise with Callaway’s Epic/Rogue/Flash or TaylorMade’s M series drivers was fair or not, the TS2/TS3s have moved beyond that as a consideration. Last week they were joined with a model for better players who generate a lot of driver spin, the smaller clubhead low-spin TS4.

“TS drivers have exceeded all our expectations both on tour and with golfers around the world,” said Josh Talge, Vice President of Marketing Titleist Golf Clubs. “When it comes to driver performance, TS has shown that it’s no longer a one- or two-horse race.”

“While we know most golfers find their best fit in a TS2 or TS3 driver, there is a percentage of players out there with distinct performance needs, such as aggressive spin reduction,” Talge said. “TS4 is the ultra-low spin driver that still produces exceptional ball speed. If you want to hit it longer but are having trouble controlling spin off the tee, TS4 was made for you.”

So, what makes the TS4 able to make these claims?

As with the TS2 and TS3 the crown is cast titanium and 20% thinner, i.e., 10 grams less, than the 917 models of two years ago and the TS4 face is the same as the TS2/TS3, a variable thickness design Titleist calls Radial VFT. On difference thought is the classic pear shape clubhead since it is only 430cc has less air resistance and can be swung faster.

To get the lower spin numbers (Titleist says about 300 rpm less) and thus more distance the TS4 sole weight seen in the TS2 has been moved from the trailing part of the sole towards the front nearer the face. This moved the center of gravity forwards which produces a flatter, piercing trajectory. The tradeoff is this weight placement to produce the lower spin combined with the smaller clubhead means the TS4 is less forgiving, a critical factor for those whose swings have trouble getting impacts in the center of the face.

The TS4 like the other TS models comes with a stock shaft length of 45.5” and this is not the first time this approach of smaller head-weight forward has been used. Four years ago, Titleist brought out the 915D4 and TaylorMade just got approval by the USGA of a “Mini Driver” though from the scanty information available the clubhead looks to be less than 350cc.

Titleist debuted the TS4 at the Valero Texas Open with two of the 44 players using Titleist drivers switching.

I'll start:

VW beetle (original): battery could leak, leading to the battery tray (and also the floor) disintegrating. Heater channels prone to rust since they collected dirt/snow/water from the drivers shoes would lead to rust and eventually frame failure.

Mazda GLC Deluxe: body/frame mounts for the steering can corrode without visible signs of fatigue. Wheels would go inches out of alignment.

DSM eclipse: "crankwalk"

Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4: intake gasket poorly designed and will pop off under boost.

61-68 Lincoln continental and all 430cc engines in Mercury, Edsel, and Lincolns: water diverters would rust and no longer push water up to the heads, heads would warp. plastic teeth on timing chain tensioners (for noise reduction, not to save money) would disintegrate and timing wouldn't be consistant.
