Thinking about Steven Universe and just... okay so. Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond
There's been a lot of debate over whether she's a hero/"good person" or a villain/"bad person." But uh. Here's the thing: she isn't either. And that's kind of the whole point of the show... well, one of the main points, anyway
I'm not gonna go into writing everything about her character and/or the show we could possibly analyze to make this point— if I did I'd probably end up writing an entire-ass book —but like. It's true. 100% true, at least based on how I interpret the show
I don't want to push any ideas onto anyone else, but I do very much believe that this is the basis of what the show is trying to say
I'm gonna put a read more here because I tend to ramble:
So, Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond. She started colonizing a planet, realized there was sentient life on it and that all life is valuable and worth protecting, and tried stopping the colonization. The Diamond's didn't listen to her, so she stared a rebellion and faked her own death, traumatizing her closest friend (or lover?? Honestly I don't think that kind of relationship between her and Pearl was ever confirmed, but we 100% know that Pearl had those feelings, but I digress) in the process. After the war was declared over, she, along with the Crystal Gems left, try doing all they can for the corrupted gems left over. Then she meets Greg hundreds of years later and sacrifices her form to make Steven, a decision that was heartbreaking for all her loved ones
There's lots of good and bad points here, and that's the main takeaway: she was both good and bad. She can't be entirely described as one or the other. In every way besides physical, she was human. And you know what? So is every other character!! The Crystal Gems, the Diamonds, the humans— literally every single character has both messed up and done something good. There's more to everyone than being a "good guy" or a "bad guy." No one is one or the other. They're all just complex characters that can't be defined by such simple binaries
Nobody is perfect. Everyone has flaws or faults, everyone messes up from time to time, everyone has done something wrong before. It's important to acknowledge those things, but also to not allow them to define you. As such, you need to acknowledge the good things about you, too. Everyone has good qualities, everyone's done something good or right before. But, just as with the bad things, we can't let these good things define us, either. Both need to be acknowledged and accepted
To say that Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond was entirely good or bad, innocent or guilty, is to misunderstand the message that the show is trying to convey. She was not entirely innocent, but she was also not entirely guilty. And the same goes for every single character. The same goes for all of us
