Grimmtober Day 19: Rumplestiltskin
The poor miller's daughter sat there, and for her life she did not know what to do. She had no idea how to spin straw into gold. She became more and more afraid, and finally began to cry. Then suddenly the door opened. A little man stepped inside and said, "Good evening, Mistress Miller, why are you crying so?"
--
This is a small story, an ATU type 500 that is told like so:
A poor miller had a very beautiful daughter. One day, in an effort to make an impression on the king, he claimed that she was such a fine spinner that she could turn straw into gold. The king was impressed and wanted to put the girl to the test. He asked the miller to bring the girl to the castle the next day.
When she arrived, the King took her to a room filled with straw and told her that she had one day to spin it into gold or be executed. However the girl had no idea how to spin straw into gold, and as time went on she became scared and began to cry.
Suddenly the door opened, and a little man stepped inside. He asked the girl why she was crying and she explained her predicament. The man offered to do the task for her in return for a precious possession. The girl gave him her necklace, and the man did the work in no time. When the king saw the room full of gold, he was very impressed, but he became even more greedy.
He took the girl into an even larger room filled with straw and gave her the same terms. The girl was even more distraught, convinced that this would be the end. Once again, she began to cry, and again the man came by and offered to do the work. She gave him her ring and he did the work. Once again the king was impressed and took her to yet another room.
This time, if she succeeded she would become his wife, if she failed she would be killed. When the girl was alone, the man returned for a third time, asking what she would give, but she had no more precious possessions. The man then asked for her firstborn child, when the time came. She agreed easily, thinking nothing would come of it. The man did the work, and the king and the girl were married.
A year passed and the girl, now queen, gave birth to a beautiful child. She had forgotten all about the promise to the man and was shocked and frightened when he came to collect. The queen cried and pleaded and offered him the wealth of the kingdom to keep her child. He refused all until finally, he gave her an ultimatum. If she could guess his name in three days she could keep the child.
On the first day, she collected all the common names she could think of and sent a messenger to find names from far and wide. She recited them all to the man, but none were correct. On the second day, she sent messengers to find out what names were common in the neighborhood. She told these to the man, even including the rarest from the lot, but still, none were correct.
But on the third day, the messenger returned with good news. He had not been able to find any new names, but on his way back through the mountains, he'd spotted a fire and heard singing. There he saw a little man dancing and singing:
Today I'll bake; tomorrow I'll brew,
Then I'll fetch the queen's new child,
It is good that no one knows,
Rumpelstiltskin is my name.
The queen was delighted by this news and awaited the little man's return eagerly. When he approached, she began listing names, and as usual, the man replied no. Then she asked, "Is your name Rumplestiltskin?". The little man was so shocked he flew into a rage, for, of course, the queen had guessed correctly. He stomped his foot so hard that it became buried in the ground. Then he grabbed his foot with both hands and tore himself down the middle. The end. (lol whut)
You can't talk about Rumplestiltskin without talking about the power of names. The concept of "true names" being powerful is deeply entrenched in fae lore. In fact, the first thing you learn in fae interaction 101 is 'do not give out your real name freely'. (Interacting with the fair folk is a lot like interacting on the internet in the early 2000s).
Of course, it goes both ways, knowing a creatures true name gives you power over it. There is an inherent power of names in magical arts as well, which is why you may see this rule applied to sorcerers or magical rituals in some stories. Even outside of the realm of the supernatural and folklore, names have a lot of power.
Many cultures place importance on the naming of a child, and often names are seen to be tied to a person's luck and fate (numerology and astrology draw on this). Some cultures even have social taboos on addressing people by name in certain situations, usually based on their perceived social or professional rank.
Psychologically speaking, addressing someone by their name in conversation can deepen your connection with them. Being called by our name reinforces our identity, and creates a sense of familiarity with the people we're speaking to, even if they're near strangers. When you address someone by name, you put yourself on equal footing with them. The experience becomes collaborative, and both parties are more likely to gain something positive out of the experience.
The psychological power of names in group dynamics where power is a factor (the office, the classroom, or the courtroom for example) has been quite aptly named the Rumplestiltskin Principle.
So in short, names are pretty important, and we function better as we learn and use the names of the people around us. And if you're not going to make the effort to at least ask the name of the dude who's been helping you avoid death, maybe don't put your unborn child up for collateral.
