Research on 3D Sculpture
Tumblr media
This is done by Alexandra leykau.
I like this image because it looks like an open book.
Alexandra Leykauf was born in 1976 at Nurnberg Germany and studied in  Nuremberg; Gerrit Rietveld Akademie, Amsterdam at the  Academy of Fine Arts (audiovisual media & photography) and Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (residency).

The Reason behind what I Made...
You use to find out all information in books. but, nowadays you can find just about anything out on the computer through the internet. This has lead to people these days gaining more knowledge and facts than ever before but lacking in wisdom in what to do with that information.
The Materials I used
X2 books
Picture Frame
Black Acrylic paint
Double sided sticky tape
Glue
Why??
I used quite a thick book to represent all information back then (pre-internet) but then a thinner book to use as the computer because information now is compacted into a small space.
I used a picture frame as the screen of the computer because I thought it would be a different and unique item to use but would resemble a screen well.
I used double sided tape to stick the picture frame to the book.
I used glue to stick the pages together, to make it more sturdy and stronger so it can hold the weight of the frame.
The picture of the keyboard I took of my laptop at home, I printed it onto photo paper.
My inspiration...
Tumblr media
This image called ‘Open book’ by Alexandra Leykauf was where my first thoughts came from...
I thought about ‘Books’ in relation to what we have now, in contrast to what there was before. Back when there was no internet.
’’The Location
I Chose the Library to take my photographs, as this is where you find computers and books together.
If I did it again, what would I improve on...
I would have real computer keys instead of a picture of a keyboard.
I would have found alternative ways to make sure the computer could stand freely.
in conclusion...
I am happy with my Final outcome and the way I have included hints of Alexandra’s work within my sculpture.

Photographers who do photo sculptures
Tumblr media
Judy Barrass
Judy Barrass presents her 3D sculptures in little cubes without one of their sides so you can look into it and see her image. Shes an artist born in Canberra,  she focuses on “Small sculpture, art-in-nature installations, digital media, video and projection, virtual world art, writing, artist books, animation, printmaking, illustration”. this is said on her page.
As you can see in this image, she is allowing the people to get close to her sculptures so they are able to see her images properly. She also has a picture on her page where it is a triangle with words projected into it, on a wall.

Darren Harvey Reagan
Darren presents his work in a plain white background on a plain white stool/worktop. He stated on the ‘Parallax Photographic Coop’ website “ These images were followed by months of meticulously carving and photographing chalk rocks in the studio, forcing a geometry and line to shape the objects towards the photographic surfaces they eventually become. The Erratics combines these sets of images within a new text work by Harvey-Regan that explores how the processes and concerns within the work might be further expressed and shaped through the act of writing.”
His ‘Erractics’ sculptures are all pretty similar, the pure white background and stool/worktop, i would say this really brings out the details of the of the rock and brings out the look of it being 3D.

Alexandra Leykauf
“Alexandra Leykauf works with photographs, photocopies and film – her pictures and installations deal with perspective, deception and illusion. Photographs that have been found, for example, from burnt down theatre and cinema halls are torn from their original contexts, processed and manipulated, so that the ‘unique character’ of a picture is put into question.”-  Cornerhouse Publications.

Introduction To The Project - 08/01/2019
Initial Reaction
When we were first told that we were creating a 3D Photo Sculpture, by making our own sculpture, I was confused. Firstly as to how to make any kind of sculpture and why, and secondly because I wasn’t sure what sculpting had to do with photography. Having looked through the powerpoint full of examples, I now realise its making a photo into a sculpture thats 3D in some way.
When I heard we were going to be making sculptures I was concerned as I’m not a creative person in terms of crafting and making things. However, having looked at some of the examples, I have a few ideas and am quite looking forward to attempting to execute them.
Research
Alexandra Leykauf
Tumblr media
This is an example of a very simple Photo Sculpture. Here an image of a box has been taken, blown up and then the image folded in a way that it both stands up and adds depth to the original photo. It is a very simple sculpture yet a very effective one.
Judy Barrass
Tumblr media
I particularly like this sculpture, as the photographs involved are all landscape and nature shots. I’m passionate about nature photography so seeing this rather than boxes and people in sculptures is quite appealing to me. Here the photographer has created ‘Artist Books’, a free standing sculpture that functions as a book in order to showcase their photography. I also like that twigs are used to bind the book together, as it fits well with the images of the trees and nature.
Kristina Bragg
Tumblr media
This is another photo sculpture that I really like. Again, it uses nature photography and some of the beautiful colours and shapes seen in nature, combined with origami. To create this sculpture, Kristina took several photos of the objects she wanted to make in paper (in this case, tulips), and thenedited them together in such a way to create a net, so that when they were folded, all the pieces would be in the correct places. So, the inside of the tulip inside, and the petals outside. One of my ideas was to do something similar to this - paper flowers made using photos taken with a macro lens to capture the details of the flower.
Brandon Lattu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of Brandon Lattu’s pieces, titled ‘Random Composition 6-40′. Several of his works involve the use of gradients of colour fading into the photos. This is quite literally a ‘photo box’, in that its a box showing different photos. I think its a great way of showing different photos in one piece creatively, and the colour gradient is eye catching and makes it more interesting than just a box with photos on.
Letha Wilson
Tumblr media
This is one of Letha Wilson’s pieces, titled Moon Wave. I find this interesting in the way that it is printed on vinyl and curved like a wave, giving depth to the picture and making it more interesting than a standard flat picture. I’m not sure how it was put around the pole or if it was somehow made around the pole, however its a great way of the photo interacting with the surroundings, and an interesting way of getting it to stand too. Personally I love the way the black and dark blue of the image contrast with the bright white pole going through it.
A lot of Letha’s pieces involve showing nature photos in an interesting form, for example by showing the image in an interesting way like above, or crumpling the image using rocks, or making a collage of parts of the photos and parts of nature.
Rachel de Joode
Tumblr media
To be completely honest, I don’t find this sculpture particularly appealing, however I find the techniques used in creating it interesting. Firstly, the images appear to be of some kind of clay like textures. The use of texture in the image draws your eyes to it, and in some of the pieces, the photos have been edited together in weird and random shapes pasted over each other, like a collage. Again, a different way of showcasing texture. Next, it seems like the pieces have been laser cut, judging by the black border around the outside of the images. I personally think this adds a nice looking effect to the piece.
Szymon Roginski
Tumblr media
I think this piece is really clever and creative - instead of taking one picture of a scene, or lots of pictures and a collage, the artist has taken individual photos of different textures on the scene, such as the dirt and the sky, and then turned these images into a 3D pentagonal shape. Then, by carefully arranging these shapes, they have recreated the scene. I think the final result is really effective and looks great.
My Ideas
These are just some initial ideas that popped into my head so they’re not really fleshed out at all, but I thought I should note them down anyway.
Fruit - Firstly create some kind of model (not sure how) in the shape of a melon slice or a citrus segment. Perhaps just using cardboard for the model. For the outside edge, create a collage of the skins of fruits that are that shape - so for a citrus segment, a collage of the textures of oranges, lemons, limes etc. Then for the rest of the sides, collage of the inside of those fruits, so the segments themselves. For a melon slice shape it could be foods that are cut into triangular shapes, for example watermelon, pizza, cake/pies, etc. Or perhaps I could just stick to a general fruit theme, and as many are round, make almost a 3D pacman shape model - so a sphere with a segment cut out and use photos of any fruit, with the inside images being in the cut out segment. I’m not yet sure if this is a good idea and where it would be displayed.
Birds and water/grass/flowers - This is my favourite idea so far, although I have a few different options of how I could execute it. I really love nature photography, so I think it’d be really cool to get a load of close up shots of bird feathers. Then to print these out and fold them into origami cranes. I could then put them on a collage of water images, or create a scene using grass textures (like Szymon Roginskis piece above) and make origami roses and flowers out of macro photos of flower petals. This piece would then be displayed in a open natural area like Newstead Abbey.
Real plushes - I’m a big fan of cute plush toys and I have a few at home. This is probably my weirdest idea, but I was thinking I could try to make these plushes realistic. For example, one of these plushes is a cow whale.
Tumblr media
My idea is to create a model of plushes like this, and then use real animal photos/textures to recreate it. So pictures of the texture of a cows coat on a model of a whale. Again, I’m not sure if this is a good idea or where the model would be placed.
