this got pretty long so read more

okay so christine's internal conflict is mainly about how she feels uncertain. this is pretty obvious from ilpr: "You follow a script so you know what comes next", "Most humans do one thing for all of their lives, the thought of that gives me hives". imo that's a very important part of who she is, she's bubbly and positive but she's also very pensive and that shouldn't be ignored. then ofc there's "I don't always relate to other people my age except when I'm on the stage" blah blah... she feels like nobody understands her, nobody appreciates her. the only reason jake won her over is literally because he complimented her on her acting- before that she just saw him as the 'pretty boy cliche' and was not interested in him at all. she just wanted someone to recognize her passion & talent and jake didn't actually do that (supported by the broadway version where he doesn't recognize her juliet costume and she gets upset. i think. i never actually watched the bw bootleg fuck me if i'm wrong.)

and speaking of the broadway version, when jake asks her about 'the last time she tried something new- and not on a stage', she doesn't have an answer. which leads me to think maybe she's too caught up in her own persona, too? like... in ilpr she says that she has a lot of interests and can't make up her mind on which one to pursue but she's just shown as 'the theatre kid', basically. (ok fine this might be a bit of a stretch bc there are too many characters in bmc for any of the characters to be explored in this much depth but for the sake of analysis stay with me) unlike the Popular Kids she didn't intentionally make up this persona, it's more like nobody notices her outside of theatre that she subconsciously keeps forcing herself back into the spotlight because she only feels appreciated when she's onstage as juliet or blanche dubois or whatever. once she steps down she feels lost again so she keeps trying to find herself in theatre. but ironically enough in theatre you can't really be yourself, you're always playing a role.

christine, for all she's painted as this perfect girl through jeremy's rose-tinted glasses, is not doing so well at school either. not many people look into this but in their defense it's difficult to notice since bmc is in jeremy's pov and he doesn't acknowledge any of her imperfections.

really it’s remarkable how much it’s like, my god, bmc’s doing all that & giving so much of [exactly what you could want] wherein it’s generally so rare to find / difficult to wring those things from just anywhere else, but here it’s so straightforward & permeating & Deliberate like well im overwhelmed & like

just one thing to touch on re: that sort of thing is bway agtikbi like, dear god. what a fun song, first of all, just on its own. the fact that jeremy & christine overall are So good which is an opinion but i’m right, and regardless of my also being right, i’m Discerning lol, like you Can Naught just throw a gesture at [romance] at me out here, swatting that shit away like cmon. don’t make me sit through this. but that we have these Displays of how like, this isn’t the sk8r boi [he was a boy she was a girl what more can i say] setup for like, why’s jeremy like this particular girl?? who knows??? & who cares b/c he’s some boy & she’s some girl so can i make it any more obvious???? like, she is Individually Characterized immediately like, she’s not the generic anygirl next door nor like oh the peak [performing femininity Correctly] girl anyone would be in love with, she’s also not even simply the like manic pixie dream girl(tm) situation when she’s really not even doing things “correctly” enough for that either, but even if you loosely categorize it thusly, here’s jeremy actually immediately being her mpdg in return lmao like she notices him, he’s immediately behaving in an elevated & dramatic way too, making a noise & fleeing the scene, like there’s Your attention-grabbing interest-capturing little weirdo too lmfao. the fact that in ilpr it’s a solo character portrait song but it’s also v relevant that jeremy’s there, jeremy has a role in christine’s arc the entire way here rather than like oh christine forever Simply Does Her Own Thing and jeremy gets to hitch his arc to this & get pulled along, like, she would’ve retreated to reading & waiting for rehearsal to actually start & then focused on going through that rehearsal, but it’s b/c of jeremy’s clear Interest & participation that she starts and then continues this song & gets increasingly fully Enthused & Expressive with it, she never is Just Being Herself(tm) fully, especially if there’s anyone else around and/or it’s not in the context of rehearsal or wherever else it’s safe to be so theatrical & enthusiastically so. and that they’re both just having a fantastic time lmao, the acting kills it so hard. like i’m always saying, if you can see those ilpr rehearsal / press day antics & Not be like “omg. them” then well alright but i don’t know how you manage it lmao

and i love how agtikbi is like, clearly a love song, and it’s a love song between christine and jeremy except also it’s Not, b/c christine’s singing about jake, except for the Very Straightforwardly About Jeremy “guess there’s a part of me that wants to / who knew??” section which, i like have to sit down, it’s So sweet lmao. and it’s that like, just like in ilpr there’s really still this indication that christine already Likes jeremy as well to a nonzero/increasing degree, but here she’s not even like engaging with the concept of “oh i guess i’m In Love With jeremy” b/c she’s instead engaging with “oh i guess i’m In Love With jake maybe possibly,” but the element of that closeness & affection & interest b/w her and jeremy organically manifests anyways, without a required conscious Romantic Narrative to it, actually (and stuff like this wherein it’s like, it’s already not the point of anyone’s arc that Being Eternal Romantic Soulmates saved the day rather than Being Ourselves Together / Via Mutual Support, but b/c it’s the latter that’s True throughout this story & is what matters, it doesn’t make sense to assume that jeremy & christine’s relationship is Nothing, or something superficial & insignificant at least, if for whatever reason they aren’t dating) like, that this Enthusiasm isn’t contingent on consciously focusing on one’s crush, and the enjoyment of their interactions isn’t either, when jeremy obviously v much knows he Likes christine, but she’s considering Liking jake, since that’s her way of venturing outside what she already knows & what she considers to be the rules & bounds by which she can remain safe enough / socially tolerated and maybe sometimes even move beyond to enjoying herself & being accepted. the Bowling Alley Performance Art interaction that leads into the scene like, my god. the moment when christine hugs herself to jeremy while singing about how she guesses a part of her likes to hang with him. i’m flipping out.

all this and the way that, of course, this is reprised as what’s now a straightforwardly romantic moment b/w christine and jeremy at the halloween party on the couch, when it’s this bookend of how like, okay, their forays into connecting with Popular People that followed agtikbi are fairly in shambles rn & they’re sure feeling worse for wear about that, but not yet fully [i suppose i’m having a crisis] about it, and of course this reprise Begins as specifically a reprisal of the “guess there’s a part of me that wants to / who knew?” sections of the original number, but wherein by contrast, with christine now more conscious of Liking Jeremy as well, the first line “it’s kinda killer to sit and chat with you” is now applying that word “Kinda” towards jeremy, like, now definitely actually considering how she might feel about him, romantically, rather than the titular Guy That I’d Kinda Be Into being jake, and of course that “kinda” then turns into “pretty” for the rest of the verses, and there’s no Guessing or “who knew?” tempering (addendum: that “who knew?” becomes “it’s true” in the reprise =‘] ). and of course the more downtempo & quiet execution, just like, in awe of that switch b/w off bway and bway where instead of getting bolder and more dramatic via a volume increase, jeremy stays as soft & downtempo when asking her out, like, help....that this Very Much Peak Love Song moment between the two, who have obviously been bonding over like, higher energy elevated spontaneity together, which is fantastic and which has already involved Vulnerability b/c neither of them are Just Like That with Just Anyone, as well as has been Real & Genuine since behaving in ways that seem weird / noticeably theatrical to others can sure be like that, but they also can have these moments of being vulnerable while very outside of both their elements or any guiding rails within a particular Situation, and they did just manage to again totally naturally have one of those especially spontaneous, elevated moments, despite both being unhappy & hiding out on this couch & uncertain where to go from here long term or short term, i don’t know what i’m supposed to say, just say what’s on your mind....and the Nd Communication / Socializing moments lmao, express yourself through some weird noise that’s improvised every afternoon or night, echo & build on that together & enjoy that completely, despite that it clearly doesn’t Fit In, but even once that moment of connection / particular exercise of that particular way of expressing themselves subsides, they’re able to have this interaction of even increasingly vulnerability / intimacy Within that subsided vibe, not propelled by peak spontaneous enthusiasm, but where like, the Emotional aspect is one that just as real & as close as ever even though it’s not happening with this peak Passionate Effusion of like, oh what must be Realest must be what’s most unfiltered & spontaneous & elevated, filters & hesitation / restraint / second-guessing & Not feeling “wow this is the most intense emotion i know, and i’m gonna just dive right into that and see where it takes me” must all lead people Away from what’s most genuine & right for them & etc etc. when that’s hardly true in general, and again from the like Neurodivergent For Neurodivergent angle b/w christine & jeremy, that’s another layer of how “um just be yourself :)” doesn’t mean everything and Being Yourself for real involves conscious effort rather than the shedding of that, and the fact that jeremy & christine’s relationship exists when they’re being fully spontaneous (which they can’t Just Do around anyone, anytime) And Also when they’re having this dialed back slower and quieter moment where it takes a little bit of back and forth to work up to saying something more direct....Augh

all that as kind of contextualizing leadup to Falling Over about the first agtikbi scene where it’s like good god they’re So precious already and that now it’s time for this banger of a song AND THEN when the section that Is truly directly more about christine and jeremy kicks in we have given the delightful chorus GLITTERY HEARTS with which to enhance the choreography and illustrate the apparent situation here and i personally am like leaning over clenching a fist like holy shit jesus christ i can’t believe bmc gives us so much so straightforwardly. and then the agtikbi reprise comes along and that’s yet another thing i crumple & explode over. thank you so much ;m;

I have a BIG problem with the main 4 ships, I could make a book of all of my cons with these but I’ll keep it simple: Boyfs- No Chemistry Arson Bros- Toxic (I liked your opinion on this ship) Pinkberry- Again Toxic Cinnabun- These 2 hardly interacted, And the fact that all the people who ship these are EXTREMELY TOXIC especially to opinions and it’s kinda sad

yes, yes, yes, yes. however i cannot keep it simple: i must have long descriptions for each.

 i freaking despise the people who apply lyrics from ilpr/agtikbi/anything that’s aimed at or sung by Christine and reframe it for boyfs to try and apply stagedork’s chemistry to your ship like no honey. boyfs are better platonic and we all know it. and then like ive said the way michael treats jeremy? id be singing get another boyfriend until the day i die.

as for arson bros/richjake... the SHIP NAME ALONE tells you why it bad. like you’ve prolly seen me say, without eVeRyThiNg else rich literally burned down his goddamn house. and as a suicide attempt? of your best friend? like yeah he didn’t have any clue what was going on but do you seriously want to be friends with that guy, not even mentioning how oh he was never actually friends with this guy? i would have some serious trust issues after rich (i love rich but like Dude jake and rich are Not working out)

pinkberry... like, i ship it, it’s a guilty pleasure ship for me, but i also really enjoyed rise of skywalker, but with both, i can understand the issues with it. (john boyega deserved better and the kiss was just a slap in the face ffs). pinkberry... god yeah it’s toxic. brooke needs to do some growing on her own and take a break from chloe and find herself as a person without chloe stifling her, and chloe needs to like. fix herself.

cinnabun.... also ship it but also understand the issues. they didn’t interact but for this one i can kinda get it if we move past ‘‘wE hAvE tO pAiR EvEryOnE uP” it might be appealing for some if you do it right- jenna the ignored weird kid who’s desperate for a friend who listens to her and loves her, and christine the weird (possibly also ignored) kid who wants someone who listens to her and loves her. but yeah fundamentally it is people who want to pair everyone up and then nobody ever does anything with the ship.

on that point... honestly, every one of these ships with the exception of richjake, if you Actually Put In The Effort? you could kind of make it work. pinkberry needs brooke and chloe to go off on their own and figure themselves out, cinnabun’s the best off of the bunch and it honestly wouldn’t take much to get them to happen if you actually wrote them instead of shoving them in the background at the lunch table, and boyfs needs a long conversation with both of them, possibly a break to figure themselves out individually, and both of them being honest with each other and figuring out their issues/the issues with the friendship (michael’s reaction to when jeremy’s upset, for example), and then, and only then, could you build something on them. (they’d still have no chemistry though but id let it slide if you made it at least a healthy environment)

okay so i know most of this is stuff ive talked about before but Listen i have feelings on this fandom and i feel the need to say something a million times to get my point across.

also! yeah there’s a Lot of toxic people who ship this stuff but i don’t think that they’re All bad people (im friends with at least one person who ships it... yeah i swear i don’t bite you if you ship it if you’re not an asshole), the problem is the toxic people are Loud.

BMCNYC Thoughts 8/24/18

hi this gets real long so i’m gonna put it all beneath the cut. spoilers below so proceed with caution!

a girl came cosplayed as rich and there were so many michael hoodies and even one kid wearing the jeremy iconique striped shirt (and of course the creeper shirts)

they had the most amazing soundtrack playing beforehand that just set the mood

the band was super awesome - they were waving at us before the show started

i don’t know what i was expecting out of will roland but it certainly wasn’t this

he was soooooooo perfect as jeremy and i will touch on this later

we were so close that i could see every drop of sweat/spit that was excreted and it was kind of amazing

i knew this was going to be good from the moment will walked out in his boxers and my mom went “oh my god” in a deadpan

he squirted lotion into his hand from six feet away like what the hell boy

at the beginning of more than survive, jeremy puts on the most grandmotherly cardigan ever and i was like you wonder why you get picked on (also, he must have been dying, it was so thick)

every time mr. heere came out in his underwear, my mother went “oh sweet mother of god”

the chroreo, man - fabulous

when jeremy almost runs into the gossip trio he goes “ah! girls” and veers so hard

whenever christine does anything, it’s slo-mo and the lights are pink and the little lift thing to sign the sign-up sheet was brilliant

when george came out in the first song for michael’s solo, the cheering was so loud and he had the biggest smile on his face

he delivers the “you look like ass, what’s wrong?” line in the most exaggerated stage whisper

my mom was like “what the hell does boyf stand for?” and i just shushed her until the whole backpack thing happened it was fantastic

“my mothers would be thrilled!” this just makes me think that michael’s moms tease him about liking jeremy all the time (cause they totally know) ((and jeremy knows they ship him and michael)) and he couldn’t help but make a comment

STEPHANIE HSU IS A GODDESS

she truly embodies christine and all her amazing quirks

jeremy has the most intense love struck smile on his face while christine sang ILPR and she, like, patted his face and he was totally blissed out it was so cute

when she asks if she had seen her in any of the plays, jeremy nods super enthusiastically and christine is obviously surprised when she says, “oh, thank you”

christine gets kissing-close to jeremy and then runs away to make car noises and he looked so flustere

brooke and chloe come on stage for play rehearsal holding hands

jake fucking dABS when he’s taking to christine during rehearsal about serious stuff

the bathroom scene

rich calls jeremy “tallass” and mr. reyes was like “me?” and rich goes “not you”

“stalls are for girls *gasp* *high “genuine” voice* are you a girl, jeremy?”

the penis line made my mom shake her head so hard

he still lifts his shirt at the end of the song and friends, i am only human

he winked before he left after the squip song and hot damn

two-player game is so gay, so gay and they slap the controllers a lot like i wasn’t expecting that and jumped every time it happened

michael goes to spencer’s for some ghostbusters soda instead of crystal pepsi and he says it tastes like ghosts in a really gruff voice

the way will acted out being synced with the squip was perfect i couldn’t have imagined it any other way

he like rolled around the front of the stage and screamed and tried to avoid being touched

the squip would like “control” his dance moves by moving his finger

also, the squip touches jeremy a lot like on the face and the shoulders and jeremy looks so uncomfortable

the way the squip speaks i can only describe as surfboarder genius - like real smart, but with a smooth flowy, well... chill voice

nothing could’ve prepared me for the outfits the other cast members were wearing during be more chill pt. 1. nothing.

george looked like the fucking gay sugar daddy i know he wants to be deep down

stephanie totally stole the show with her electric scooter

george and gerard’s characters almost kissed in the background and a mini little squeak come out of my mouth

when jeremy mentions madeleine, chloe breaks a fucking hanger and it’s glorious

brooke carries a la croix with a straw everywhere and it’s hilarious

do you want a ride? was also exceedingly gay even though brooke was trying to get in jeremy’s pants

jeremy just so truly hates himself

be more chill pt. 2 broke my heart bc will just looks ready to cry at any given moment

when jeremy wakes up the next day, he whispers to ask the squip if it’s still there and taps his neck and goes “are you still on?”

mr. heere: “are you talking to yourself?”

jeremy: “i guess i am”

A GUY THAT ID KINDA BE INTO OMG

it’s so sweet the way that christine kind of just lets go of what little filter she had and the hug she gives jeremy is perfect

the squip starts to malfunction when he finds out the song was about jake

when the squip gives jeremy the “me or michael” ultimatum, they stand on opposite sides of the stage with jeremy in between them and i got chills

listen. bruh. honeybruh. i knew that the optic nerve blocking on thing was gonna hurt me in my soul but i was not expecting it to hurt that bad

so will  c. gave the line with conviction like he was doing it for the greater good

but will r. delivered the line with such a sad voice it sounded like he was gonna cry and then the black thing came up and blocked off michael and i gasped. i was shook™️

loser geek whatever was so good!

he was like trying to convince himself that cutting out michael was the right thing and he was so torn up like he felt the universe owed him one but what if that came with getting rid of the only true friend he’s had and he looked like he was tearing up

INTERMISSION

my mom: he is so mean! me, thinking she means the squip: who? mom: jeremy!

THEY PLAYED THE FUCKING PANTS SONG BUT REDONE AS LIKE ELEVATOR MUSIC WHO THINKS OF THIS STUFF?

there was a girl crying in the front row and i was like honey me too

something i noticed right at the beginning of act 2 was that the longer jeremy had the squip, the neater his hair became

the dance break in halloween was so cool and i kinda wish i was doing it with them and jeremy’s costume made everyone go oooooh

during do you wanna hang? chloe walks her fingers down jeremy’s chest to his belt and he looked like he was about to die

she also climbed along the back of the bed and fell off and it made me laugh so hard

the squip makes jeremy drink alcohol and after he spouts off some japanese, he fucking face plants into the bed and is offline what a way to go

jeremy escapes to the bathroom and michael does a dramatic and super unnecessary hand flourish before grabbing jer’s arm and nonchalantly going “sup?”

when jeremy called michael a loser, the most outraged gasp went through the audience it was such an amazing solidarity (“a shared negative emotion is the quickest way to blah blah blah blah blah”)

and now my favorite: michael in the bathroom

i was so close that i could see every pained face and teary eyed look and ALL OF THE FIDGETING LIKE THIS BOY DAMN NEAR HAD A PANIC ATTACK AND I ALMOST CRIED

he sounds more upset with himself than anything like all of this is somehow his fault and i was sitting there like BABY NO IT AIN’T YOU’RE IN LOVE WITH AN IDIOT

he genuinely gets more and more afraid/panicked when people start knocking on the door like he was trying so hard to make it seem like he wasn’t crying i cri

he curls in on himself the whole time and george just does an amazing job of portraying someone with anxiety

“some of us need the bathroom” “i’m having my period!” pause “take your time, honey”

the most jolting part of seeing this was the fact i couldn’t go back and listen to mitb 5 times in a row

the big white thing is asleep on the couch while chris and jer are talking and when he gets up and walks away, chris like stops laughing and goes: that’s an adult

rich slaps himself when he’s upset/overwhelmed/doing something his squip deemed wrong and i sat there going “baby, no!”

okay so i knew that the other people came on as girls during the smartphone hour bUT I WASN’T READY I WAS. NOT. READY.

tiffany’s voice is just incredible and if you’ve never heard her sing you’re missing out

brooke just fucking yeets her banana off stage it’s incredible

also her scream at the end of the song is me realizing i have to go back to school soon (yike)

jeremy’s interaction with his dad right after that had me going “jesus fuck, jer, you went too far calling your own father a loser unreal”

they switched the pants song and the pitiful children and it kind of made more sense like that

michael gets slid on stage smoking a fucking bong and he desperately tries to hide it as mr. heere talks to him

as they were doing their thing, george’s (buildt) thighs were on full display and, as i have stated before, i’m only human! i really couldn’t help but stare

christine knows about squips because a kid at her theater camp got one and was sent to a mental hospital and she’s really pissed and upset that jeremy was using one to talk to her

i felt so bad for my daughter jenna because she goes “no one’s ever asked me that before” after jer asks how she’s feeling

i anticipated there was going to be a boss ass dance break during the pitiful children and DAMN IT IT WAS SO GOOD

they had people “on stage” for a midsummer’s nightmare about zombies facing away from the audience so we saw their “backstage” area

the costumes for that are a+ like super futuristic and kinda extra and amazingly glittery

MR. REYES IN JEREMY’S COSTUME: i assume you’ll want your costume back, mr. heere

when brooke gets the pansy serum, she takes out her straw to drink it and i was like how the fuck is a squip getting up that?

there was such an anticipation for michael makes an entrance and it got so much applause they had to wait until it died down to go on

when jake’s squip is synced with jeremy’s and he’s walking without his crutches he’s like slapping his legs to show he’s not in pain anymore

when christine sings “jeremy, i love you” he looks like he’s in physical pain because he’s realizing this isn’t how he wanted his to happen and i felt that

michael starting to scream with everyone disconnecting from their squip because he has no clue what’s going on is a big fat mood™️

as the squip died it spoke in japanese and i thought that was an interesting little addition to make it more authentic

it made me real happy to see that they followed through with the hair thing because jer’s was a mess in his hospital bed

when he wakes up, rich is in a full body cast and he’s speaking with his lisp which is so pure

he has his whole totally bi revelation and, again, so pure and the largest cheer went up you could tell gerard was super happy it was adorable

he says that michael has visited jeremy a lot and asks if he’s his boyfriend and all that

which bmc scenes make you the softest bc for me it's gotta be most of the stagedorks scenes ESPECIALLY a guy that i'd kinda be into. mostly bc of christine cause her and michael are my favs (i love them all sm though) but also bc of jeremy because he is a close second to both of them. also vimh but vimh makes me cry a lot although nowadays i can hardly watch one scene without at the very least tearing up. anyways yeah which ones make you soft

i simply rewatched bmc and took notes for this and really got off track at points in the sense of sticking to What Makes You Softest but that’s how it goes babey

ACT ONE - in mts when jeremy is just having a whole moment being smitten in christine's presence while she's inelegantly picking herself up off the floor and smearing on lip balm and adjusting a skirt wedgie - jeremy and michael just being default that glad to meet each other in the middle of a random schoolday - michael hyping up jeremy's crush on christine and just encouraging this momentum to get jeremy to sign up for the play - ilpr.....that christine stops after like, the first two verses and goes back to her book b/c she doesn't figure someone's looking to listen to her beyond that but then she sees jeremy's still 110% paying attention and the whole rest of the song enfolds with increasing enthusiasm - jake doing that whole bit "all the pressure i feel to be the best at everything all the time" lmao classic stuff here, depressing content delivered in this humorousse way. charming moment - "leave me alone, i've had a bad day" - 2pg......when michael taps jeremy on the shoulder to get jeremy to join in on his choreo, which jeremy then does.....that michael asks if jeremy will be too cool for Video Games and jeremy just responds Emotionally Directly......we love the Favorite Person moment......that this song just ends with the two of them grooving 2gether god bless - jeremy stammering and Tics and Fidgeting when the squip remarks uponst it - jeremy delivering the Looking Pretty Sexy Brooke as awkwardly as possible and she's just like "thanks :)" - jeremy's own Theatricality coming out......hey hamlet - jeremy spinning around in place alternately addressing both brooke and the squip with "oh i'm supposed to meet my friend michael" - nice little detail wherein brooke signals for chloe to join in on her choreo - speaking of, v fond of the Moment jeremy is in on both their choreo......brooke sort of alarming jeremy with her whole attempted grande finale, straw and all, ft. the first instance of her messing with his hair so much she's just tugging his entire head around - cute that jake and rich have a sort of 2pg-esque handshake routine too - jeremy's "that's sad, what should i do" reaction re: jenna - rich's Earnest invitation to come over and play xbox... - "bonjour, jeremy" "ooh brooke!" and this whole exchange, her complimenting him, him laughing at "That Was French" and remembering to ask about pinkberry - love the whole choreo sequence/s in sync up, especially fond of his Moments with the girls, bumping hips with chloe (twice), hearing some Gossip from jenna, posing with brooke.... ;__; - the bowling alley performance art exchange before agtikbi ;____; - agtikbi......the glittery hearts choreo.....the whatever! the interlude or whatever!!! the I Guess A Part Of Me section hhhhoughhh ;o; ;o; ;o; ;o; ;o; that she pulls him into a hug and puts her head against his shoulder omggg ;_________; - brooke just trying to interact with jeremy the Right Way w/o any guidance on the bleachers and it continues to be awkward and funny....like comforting just his Leg while he converses w/his squip.....how she just ends up Physically pushing him around by the hands and head and shoulder and etc......whole situation here in upgrade.mp3 clearly less than Ideal but jeremy and brooke are nevertheless very cute individually And together - meanwhile jake also trying to genuinely Be With christine in upgrade is also charming lol, quitting archery to hang w/a girl like her.... - i always love when the Playful Shove brooke gives jeremy at "but at the mall, you looked at me" pushes him back a whole few steps....this moment of them truly Getting each other sans anyone else's interference.....tres magnifique - jeremy being That psyched to see michael for the first time (in like, less than one full day lol)....michael being That psyched just hearing that jeremy's cool scifi thing worked out after all - lgw ;_________________________; - like i'm some normal, handsome guy..... - giving us All that silence after "The Problem Has Always Been Me" - the whole bit where he launches into the "I'm Not The [series of insults]" and i've realized it's really especially a stretch to say i'm Soft for these moments in lgw but i Am vulnerable and that's its power. little 1" tall will roland on my screen here just made me shed a real tear doing That.....

well thinking about that Languages vein in the two scenes ft. rian and winston, first of all just.....yeah it makes complete sense that winston assumed rian was talking about programming languages, fun that it was different from his list of math meetup languages that he tossed out for taylor back in 3x09.......a Language-Related moment in that he’s misunderstood how she was using the term “language” there.........and then that taylor asks rian to translate for winston, which means many things, what with how we’ve been forever talking about winnie n tay being on each other’s wavelength at great at communicating in each other’s Language and understanding the other and how it sure makes sense to think of taylor as the one person winston doesn’t have to translate himself for (which this scene doesn’t disprove, seeing as he’s just like, a bit less than stone cold sober lol).........and taylor asking rian to translate instead sure seems to speak to the fact that rian didn’t need a whole year to Understand winston / interact with him Where He’s At with an understanding of his actual intent and what he really Means, and taylor is perceptive and you can see rian and winston right to their left through the Transparent Wall of that one office, maybe they’ve noticed the quants having conversations and/or more specific examples of like, rian Getting winston and reframing / rephrasing things so that other people get what he means also, or whatever. and then the language-related moment of rian instead breaking out the not-quite-fluent spanish lol..........still semi-inadvertently “translating” the situation for taylor in informing them that for some reason axe thought it would be great if everyone got Fucked Up on drugs that can’t possibly even be in trial as pharmeceutical 50-packs. didn’t hedge funds do this in the 80s like. i almost can’t suspend my disbelief that axe would be This stupid, but also i don’t care so moving on

another reason jere and chris’s relationship is written well (see always: it’s not that hard!! ugh!!! super simple things to do but no we have to have a zillion horribly-handled empty guy/girl relationships!! why not) is just that like.....it doesn’t do that exasperating thing where the girl who is being crushed upon just needs to Notice the guy in the last 10 minutes and it will be like “wow yeah we’re dating now” like the only way to have a positive relationship at all is to be like well i’m your girlfriend now

but like, jeremy and christine actually have A Relationship Development over the entire course of the musical And there are strong suggestions that they have a very parallel experience in terms of how they Like each other, despite jeremy being the one who starts out with a crush while we don’t have reason to think christine has a crush on him at the start of things, but it sure seems like she does start to have this genuine interest in jeremy the whole time even if she isn’t necessarily thinking of it in that way the entire time

like ilpr is a solid and genuine foundation showing that christine can be herself in jeremy’s presence, not even independently of his feedback either, i.e. if he hadn’t responded as positively as he had she probably wouldn’t have been as genuine and open as she was. and we get to see that jeremy experiences this and totally enjoys it, that Reaction when she gets super worked up with the punches and voice all I!! LOVE!! PLAY! REHEARSAL!! is golden thank you william....and like!! they’re kindred spirits!! christine isn’t ~too good~ for him b/c she’s Popular (since she isn’t even officially in the popular group, not even later on when she’s dating jake and considering Jeremy to be popular), it’s that jeremy thinks Absolutely Everyone is too good for him b/c he thinks he’s fundamentally deficient/inferior just As A Person somehow...”like i’m some Normal handsome guy” is really a hell of a verse....anyways the point is that jeremy is in his heart a christine-esque person in terms of the way christine is So Passionate and weird and dramatic and loud!! but jeremy isn’t really aware of this at the time and trying super hard to repress everything abt himself and in being drawn to christine he is recognizing that Quintessential part of himself w/o realizing it

ANYWAYS and at the end of the rehearsal scene jeremy feels put out like once again there’s been a takedown / i just wanna know that christine is aware i’m alive....but she IS aware he’s alive and he HAS made a positive impression on her, he just like, looks at jake as the Epitome Of Popular super appealing guy, (see: jake/jeremy...), and sees himself as the total opposite end of that spectrum, how could anyone like him when jake’s around, and being in such a negative / failure-expecting / self-loathing place that his perspective is skewed and he can’t see that it Wasn’t a total failure in terms of getting christine’s attention

and then! a guy that i’d kinda be into is all like “oh look here’s this love song between christine and jeremy” but then it’s like “syke!! it was christine and jake” but it’s not Really a psykhe because it’s a love song within a love song with the “i guess a part of me etc” section. and jeremy definitely Feels that in the moment but then again gets such whiplash and the whole thing in his mind is eclipsed by once again having it confirmed for him that she’s into jake. but like, of course it’s easy to see why her relationship with jeremy is developing at the same time as she’s interested in jake, b/c there’s no reason for that to be impossible and yknow, once again christine feels like she can be genuine around jeremy and share her real thoughts with him and she Wants and Likes to talk with him. 

and yknow it doesnt help that the squip steps in and is like “its hopeless christine will never like you unless you totally remake yourself” and such, but still, it’s actually going along okay, and jeremy hasn’t even needed the squip to do it. yeah the one incident of him kinda cheating by getting the squip’s help is saying him having a whole Thing at the mall was performance art, but then really it’s all just cancelled out when the squip has jeremy say that he has no reason to join the drama club save his thespianism, and christine is evidently a bit put out by that “why ELSE would i be here”

and then yknow seeing christine liking jake, the center of the whole popular group, and with the squip telling him he needs to be more like those Most Socially Successful people, natch jeremy believes he needs to figure out how to cut it as a ~popular guy~ and then goes off and does that for the rest of act 1 while christine and jake do their own thing

but then Oh The Couch Scene..........it’s so beautiful. and the squip is off and jeremy feels like he’s Messed Up when his impulse is silly and weird....but that’s what he’s really like!! and christine vibes with it and it becomes most obvious that that part of him, the actual Genuine Jeremy part of him, is what’s led him to have what’s arguably his most successful connection with her, just based on sitting down and talking for a second and making each other laugh......like, it Sure Is Something that jeremy learns that christine already thinks of him as popular but just seems to think this divides him from her......this subversion in which now christine thinks of jeremy, who’s supposed to be the loser geek whatever with the unattainable crush, as the out-of-reach Popular Guy......and i like that christine thinks jeremy’s been getting it on with everyone but it just turns into them laughing about her pun. b/c whether he had or hadn’t it’s nice to know christine would not take real issue with that lmao......it’s a great time for someone to express some respect for jeremy’s autonomy. and well anyways!! they have their heartmelting reprise and like. it’s not that christine tells jeremy she doesn’t actually like him and at that point i’m fairly sure that she’s more Aware of possibly maybe liking him. but like!! similar to him she’s been trying out a slightly different version of herself, and it’s just now hitting this roadblock b/c jake in his element here hosting a party w/ all the other popular kids has to be more like his ~Usual~ self than his “i’m also trying new things” self that led to him dating christine.....and, yknow, it’s a lot at once when she’s conflicted abt her and jake and her own sense of identity in general and like, regardless of how she feels about him, right in that moment still at the party of course she’s not gonna feel confident that yes let’s immediately jump into this new relationship. but that doesn’t mean she Doesn’t like him on her own b/c. yknow, their relationship is slowly developing in the background for her even as she focuses on these other things. b/c that’s how it goes sometimes!!

and then yknow the house burns down and everyone’s even more conflicted about everything and jeremy telling christine abt being squipped just freaks her out b/c like, surprise, and b/c yknow, now all these interactions between them which felt very genuine (and were!! the squip doesn’t really direct jeremy at all even if part of the time knowing that it was there gave him this confidence he wouldntve otherwise had, but ilpr / the couch bit was a wholly unsquipt affair) seems like maybe jeremy was just parroting the squips instructions the whole time, and it’s easy to see how that feels like a betrayal, have i said this exact thing before? idk. and then, yknow, her kind of being like “jeremy wtf” is a moment of calibration for him but oh no the squip’s going rogue!! etc. but the fact that it upsets her means her interactions with jeremy held real value to her

and then yknow The Play......first of all? jeremy having the squip for a while means that it’s glitching him up, screwing with his voice and movement, but its still not capable of entirely overriding jeremy’s own commands. thus, presumably, it’s not possible that christine’s 30-second-old squip would be able to force her to do or say something she didn’t want to at all, despite the fact that like, clearly it’s not natural, i really doubt it’s just like the squip mecha-piloting christine’s body and voice. it’s all a bit fuzzy b/c yknow, jeremy’s squip is at the center of the network and everyone’s is being synced to his, and so it seems like jeremy’s squip could tell other ppl’s squip what to do maybe, but it’s hard to say how it truly operates b/c a) chaos and b) jeremy’s squip, a Known Liar, c) is now lying more than ever to try to drag jeremy past the finish line of its plan

but anyways my point is that like. obviously without everyone being squipped, christine at that point would not have just suddenly declared her love for jeremy, and jeremy always Reacts to the weirdness of this and that it doesn’t seem right. but! a)! totally think christine does have her own crush on jeremy at that point. and!! wildly relevantly!! b) the squip just beamed lore from rich’s head (his locker combo) right into jeremy’s via their link, so? if the goal of jeremy’s and christine’s squips was to convince christine asap that Being With Jeremy Would Be Ideal?? why NOT give christine access to jeremy’s real actual feelings for her. she would need convincing anyways, clearly she was just mad at him 3 seconds ago, clearly she was questioning whether any of what she might have thought jeremy felt for her was real!! so it would only work in their favor to let her Know what jeremy’s actual thoughts and feelings are. and then, yknow, if she’s got THAT issue of thinking he wasn’t genuine resolved, and if having her own squip has her like, immediately able to understand why jeremy wanted to have/keep one, and if she’d already had her own Real Feelings for jeremy in the works, and with how she’d probably be questioning her own judgment extra hard anyways thanks to the stress and confusion of the whole Fire problem on top of the vulnerable place she’d already been in re questioning her relationship which she got into while questioning herself.....not super wild to see how she could be convinced vs the squip must totally be forcing her and doing a total system override

but anyways even if, yknow, it IS all of christine’s real feelings at that point like the squip assures him it is in some versions, jeremy recognizes that he doesn’t think it Should be happening this way even if it is supposedly working out in his favor. and then he proves that he’s not gonna let christine stay caught up in his mess and that he prioritizes her like, being allowed to be her own person vs them getting to Be Together, and just icing on the cake that he’s willing to sacrifice himself in a very real way to do that, b/c natch he doesn’t know that the chain reaction thing will happen.........and well then anyways vimh very obvious and even though it’s The Next Scene jeremy’s been legit comatose for however long and christine’s had some time to reflect on events w/o even having the pressure of it being possible to interact with jeremy and been able to make up her collective mind......and anyways the point is that in a lesser piece of media it’d be like “wow thanks for helping me out jeremy, i’ve truly never noticed you but now i’m like cool nice let’s kiss”, but instead it’s that the play and the moment of truth between them and the aftermath is all possible b/c of the way their relationships been developing and the way their individual journeys and their feelings for each other have been awfully parallel in many ways and it’s fitting b/c of that kindred spirits thing and what’s the point of this post? idk. it’s me saying imo christine lowkey has a crush on jeremy already and that this is a way better story than doing the “i didn’t even consider us friends but One Thing happens in the last 20 min to make me go ‘jerry??’ and yeah let’s date now”

honestly Let’s Talk About It. generally using he/him pronouns which is not to say i am banking on jeremy totally being a boy b/c honestly the Content in the musical supports Any non-cis gender identity

i mean over and over you have other people bringing up jeremy’s gender and telling him what it is and challenging him on not Being A Guy The Right Way (aka just the squip doing that really) and jeremy never really directly expresses his own thoughts or feelings on it except in lgw, when he’s singing about feeling inadequate and wrong and wanting to try to be what he “should” be

right off you’ve got jeremy’s dad saying “we’re all men in this house” which, yknow, implies the absence of jeremy’s mom, but also is happening while the Disconnect between jeremy and his dad is also being set up. it could be that jeremy isn’t actually a man but they’re not close enough to discuss it / jeremy doesn’t feel comfortable discussing it, or actually jeremy Is a trans guy and that’s a way his dad is just being fully supportive of that -- since the scene also isn’t trying to show us that his dad is failing in every possible way, just that he means well but is clearly struggling and can’t really be there for jeremy.

the “girls!....boys!” thing (if its in the official final bway show still?) is bi as hell and also like, could be Gender Times of jeremy not feeling like he fits in with anybody. jeremy’s particular Identity could be a nonbinary one!!!!

lord knows, also, we love a loose too-big Outer Layer. not only is that gay fashion but it’s also trans guy fashion

last i heard they might’ve taken out rich’s “are you a girl, jeremy” line? but boy was that whole thing just......so trans. IS jeremy a girl? is rich knowingly or unknowingly taking advantage of jeremy’s insecurity re being a trans guy? jeremy doesn’t even answer. it could be anything. he might not even know.

i don’t really remember off the top of my head the squip’s verbatim lines about how jeremy needs to Man Up or when he says it / how often....but i know it comes up multiple times and like....yknow the squip’s whole thing is playing on jeremy’s insecurities and telling him the way he is is awful and only the squip’s judgment on how things should be Is Good....so, again, jeremy being a trans boy? a girl? both/neither? could all fit here

somewhere in joe iconis' track-by-track breakdown of bmc, he mentions that recorders = christine BUT in listening to the obcr, it sounds more as if recorders = jeremy seeing christine, and not just christine herself (mainly because i can't hear any recorder during her part in upgrade w jake but it's audible in mts when he sings her name). they're there in ilpr, and agtikbi + the reprise, AND iirc it's also in the scene before the play when jeremy offers her a squip and she refuses. it's essentially all of the times when christine is present at her most christine-esque. the only other time it's NOT there is during the play and like we already know that part of jeremy realizing that christine is squipped/isnt herself during the play is the fact that she rhymes 'into' with 'you' despite having never rhymed the final lines before, but there's also.... no recorder.... hence, both lyrically and musically, it's lacking the thing that kind of. distinguishes christine in jeremy's mind.
