"Requiring financial 'transparency' by The Satanic Temple is a terrible idea"
Tumblr media
The Satanic Temple's supporters: "We're skeptical freethinkers who aren't beholden to dogma or superstition!!"
Also The Satanic Temple's supporters: "A public audit is probably just a waste of money and might make us look bad"
We say often, "Today is a good day for The Satanic Temple to release its finances."
Because, well, the Temple's owners Doug Misicko and Cevin Soling do shady shit with their finances.
But sometimes TSTers say the Temple shouldn't release their finances for review if the Christian orgs aren't going to.
Of course, many churches do it for their members or even post it online
The incorporated entity that is "Child Evangelism Fellowship" also does this, and apparently even pays for an audit:
[Note: The Satanic Temple, Inc., is also a section 170(b)(1)(A)(i), the same as CEF Inc.]
No such page or financials are provided for The Satanic Temple or its "constellation of affiliate entities" anywhere.
This is especially concerning given the supposed lack of knowledge Doug Misicko, TST Inc's treasurer and sole governing officer, shows when asked on the stand about nonprofit and for-profit.
Moreover, we’re still being sued by The Satanic Temple in federal court.
TST is now *also* suing Newsweek for writing about us. In addition, the Temple is now suing a TikToker in Texas for talking about our case. Check the pinned post for more.

‘An Illinois school district is defending an elementary school offering “After School Satan Club,” an extracurricular educational program sponsored by the Satanic Temple of the United States. The program, for children in grades first through fifth, will be taught by volunteers at The Jane Addams Elementary School in Moline, and will meet five times this year beginning Thursday, flyers circulating on social media claim. According to the flyer, the club will consist of science projects, puzzles, games, arts and crafts and outdoor nature activities. The club says it will help children learn benevolence and empathy, critical thinking, problem solving, creative expression and personal sovereignty. The Satanic Temple – essentially an activist group and think tank more than a religious institution – said the program is available at select public schools where Good News programs exist, and is meant to be educationally enriching. Members have no intention of converting children to Satanism. “Proselytization is not our goal, and we’re not interested in converting children to Satanism,” the temple says about the program on its website. “After School Satan Clubs will focus on free inquiry and rationalism, the scientific basis for which we know what we know about the world around us. “We prefer to give children an appreciation of the natural wonders surrounding them, not a fear of everlasting other-worldly horrors.” The flyer prompted a response from district leadership, who emphatically assured parents that “No teachers from Jane Addams, or any other district teacher, is involved” and “Flyers were not distributed to all students,” according to a letter from Rachel Savage, Moline-Coal Valley Schools Superintendent, to district families. She said that the space rental was “not generated by the district and is not affiliated with Jane Addams or the district.” A district parent had reached out to the Satanic Temple’s after school club, and told the group that the elementary school already offered a “child evangelism fellowship club” and wanted to bring their program to the school “to offer parents a choice of different viewpoints,” the superintendent said. Thirty flyers were sent to the school from the Satanic Temple and were placed in the school lobbies, as are all flyers for organizations and events at the school that are “religious in nature.” She further noted that the board of education permits community usage of its facilities, and approves several agreements with local churches. “To illegally deny their organization (viewpoint) to pay to rent our publicly funded institution, after school hours, subjects the district to a discrimination lawsuit, which we will not win, likely taking thousands upon thousands of tax-payer dollars away from our teachers, staff, and classrooms,” Savage wrote. The Satanic Temple says it views Satan as a “mythical figure representing individual freedom,” according to its website. “Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things,” the temple says. “Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world — never the reverse.”’

Today in Christian History
Today is Saturday, August 5th. It is the 217th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar; 148 days remain until the end of the year.
1590: Meletius Pegas becomes the Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria. He will endeavor to reunite the Greek and Coptic churches.
1604: John Eliot is baptized in England. His non-conformist views will eventually prompt him to move to America, where he will found fourteen congregations of Indian Christians, translate the Bible into Algonquin, and help prepare the Bay Psalm Book—the first book printed in America. Captured by Indians, he will learn their language while in captivity.
1720: Death in England of Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, a notable poet and hymnwriter, loyal to King James II. Among her best-known religious poems is “The Atheist and the Acorn,” which depicts an atheist as a fool for trying to outguess God’s arrangements. She had also written a praise hymn beginning, “To the Almighty on his radiant throne / Let endless hallelujahs rise.”
1751: Rev. John Cuthbertson, America’s first Scottish Covenanter pastor, arrives in America. His name appears frequently as a genealogical authority because he will keep a log of births and marriages. In it, he records over five thousand family names as well as notes of six hundred marriages and almost two thousand baptisms he performs in the course of seventy thousand miles of ministerial travels.
1833: Allen B. Freeman, a young man recently graduated from a Baptist seminary, arrives to serve as a missionary in Northern Illinois, but will die of cold and exhaustion in December the following year after his horse collapses under him, forcing him to walk many miles back to Chicago.
1835: Death of Thomas McCrie, Scottish minister and church historian. He and three other divines had left the General Association Synod and formed the Constitutional Association Presbytery. He also wrote biographies of John Knox and Andrew Melville.
1844: The first assembly of Queen’s College, British Guiana, meets. The school has been established by Anglican bishop William Piercy Austin, a missionary to the South American colony.
1876: Scottish missionary Mary Slessor boards the SS Ethiopia to sail to Calabar (Nigeria). She shares the ship with a cargo of liquor.
1955: Death of Jesse Irvin Overholtzer, founder and first director of Child Evangelism Fellowship.

Whelp, it's county fair week...
...which means I'll probably be mostly absent. I'm entering a bunch of baked goods, working throughout the week in the office and covering events, volunteering with my local Child Evangelism Fellowship chapter, and helping take care of a small army of horses.
I have plenty of posts queued up, and I don't think any of them are ask games...but just wanted to post a full warning.
In my absence, have this cutie:

(Serious) My son wants to do the "Good News Club" after school this year. I'm an atheist. What questions should I ask the leader before I let him sign up? My wife and her family are religious, and I am not. We respect each other's beliefs mostly by not bringing up the subject. We let my MIL take my son, soon to be 9, to church occasionally, to expand his social circle and because he likes it. So he wants to do this after-school club, but it's run by a group called the Child Evangelical Fellowship, which rings alarm bells. The church he goes to is methodist and so is fairly neutral in my book when it comes to what they teach. Before I let him start this after school group, of which I know nothing, I'd like to call their Team Leader ahead of time and ask some questions about what they'd discuss with the kids and the type of literature he'd be bringing home. I honestly don't mind if he's religious, as long as he doesn't get into the zealotry that I escaped from and which traumatized me as a child, which lead me to becoming an atheist today. So I'm trying to come up with a list of questions to ask this person to make sure I'm not going to regret this decision. Please add any more you think would be good. Sarcastic replies or "Don't do it!" are not appreciated here. I'd like some honest, nuanced feedback if I can. My son could really use the socialization right now and we don't have many avenues for that at the moment. Does your class teach that the earth is 6000 years old? Does your class have any mention that evolution is a theory or not true? Does your class have any mention of hell or punishment if God's word isn't followed? Does your class have any mention of gay or transgender people being confused or need to accept God to live the right way? Thank you in advance. EVANGELISM FUNCTION OF THE CHURCH “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” Matthew 28:19
Johan Companjen, President Emeritus of Open Doors International, was travelling in the Philippines. Finding it extremely hot in his hotel room, he called for a staff person. “Is the air-conditioning not working?” he asked. “Oh yes sir,” the man replied, “It’s working. It’s just not functioning!”
Jesus Christ ordained five functions for His church to be involved in for Him. We are to evangelize (Matthew 28:19); to disciple or train those who are evangelized (Matthew 28:20); to minister or serve people demonstrating God’s love (Matthew 22:39; Ephesians 4:12); to fellowship together (Ephesians 2:19; Galatians 6:10); and to worship together (Matthew 4:10; John 4:23). In the Bible, there is not necessarily a priority order for these five purposes. They are all equally important.
Evangelism is one primary function. If we really have come to know Christ as Lord and Savior, we will want to share this wonderful experience with those we love. It sometimes seems hard or embarrassing to share the Gospel with our friends and relatives. But if we really love them, and if we really believe that without Christ they will suffer for eternity separated from God, we will tell them no matter how oppressive the culture or the political situation may be.
Restrictions on the church cause new creative means of evangelism to arise. In a restricted country of Asia, one such creative method is to hire a bus and invite relatives and friends to a free outing to the beach. Once in the bus, the pastor with a hand-held loudspeaker starts preaching to his “captive audience” about the love of Christ. At the beach the sharing and fellowship continues…as well as a water baptism for new believers.
In Soviet Russia, a group of Christians took advantage of the funeral of a small daughter of one of the members to present a public evangelistic witness. On the way to the cemetery, they stopped every few hundred meters to sing triumphant songs of praise. The father of the dead child also gave a clear message of salvation in Christ. Many listeners along the way were deeply touched.
In Vietnam, Pastor Ho Hieu Ha spent over six years in prison for pastoring a growing church right under the noses of the unhappy authorities. But he felt that his imprisonment was not a waste because he used the time to witness to others who were also in prison. When he was released, he had led ninety-six people to Jesus and discipled them.
RESPONSE: I am committed to sharing Christ’s love with others. It is a primary function of the church.
PRAYER: Pray for those in restricted environments as they creatively find ways to witness about their faith.

Rosalind Jane Cousins (aka Jane Cousins), 87, departed this earthly home on March 7, 2023, surrounded by her loving family, to join her Lord and Savior. She was born on November 21, 1935, in Ellsworth, the youngest child of Merle B. and Ethel E. (Robbins) Grindle, Sr. Splitting time between Ellsworth and their coastal home in South Blue Hill throughout her youth. Jane graduated from Ellsworth High School, the class of 1954. She attended the Northern Conservatory of Music, the New England School of Theology and Bob Jones University, until a dashing local young man, just out of the Army asked her out.
Jane married Raymond S. Cousins on September 27, 1958, and the two launched a wonderful, happy family life together. The consummate homemaker, Jane raised six strong-willed daughters and kept a spotless house-no easy task! She dedicated herself to her children, filling the home with music, laughter, and love. She was also a seamstress, sans payment, making all of her own dresses. And could she cook sweet food! The counter was never without a plate of whoopie pies, date squares or her highly sought after chocolate cream pie. And once there was something for the family, she'd often turn around and cook something else to take to someone who was sick. She had a thoughtful, generous spirit.
Jane was an active member of the South Blue Hill Baptist Church. She frequently played the piano at the church over the years, cooked and cleaned for church suppers and events and co-led the church's Missionary Group. Under her leadership, the group created a variety of crafts to take to area nursing homes, where they sang for the residents. She was fun-filled and even pulled the rare all-nighter for a Rock-a-thon fundraiser (involving rocking chairs). Throughout her life she was involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship in a variety of ways. Most recently, she was a dedicated member of the Ladies' Bible Study group.
Jane is survived by her devoted husband, Raymond Cousins; her daughters, Martha Good and her husband, John of Greenville, SC; Beth Wartak and her husband, David of Easley, SC; Miriam Young-Studabaker and her husband, Steve of Stafford, VA; Betsy Bewsey and her husband, Adam of Woolwich, ME; Mary-Ellen Cousins of Yarmouth, ME; Maria Woodward and her husband, Peter of Sedgwick, ME and 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the South Blue Hill Baptist Church March 10, 2023 with visiting hour at 1:00pm followed by a funeral service at 2:00. Gifts in Jane's memory may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Eastern ME, 34 Harborview Drive, Sullivan, ME 04664 [email protected]
