Are the Sixers REALLY going to keep Bryan Colangelo?
Tumblr media
We have that and more in Wednesday’s NBA newsletter.
Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Sixers ownership met Tuesday night to discuss and quite possibly decide the fate of embattled executive Bryan Colangelo amid the investigation into his Twitter scandal. An announcement could come any old minute. This is riskiest newsletter lead item I’ve written in some time.
But Woj also cites sources who create a sort of plan for how the Sixers might navigate free agency with a damaged, somewhat embarassing Colangelo at the helm. The upshot? Respected coach Brett Brown and new assistant Monty Williams will be front and center.
This raises two questions. The first is why you would keep Colangelo if he’s not going to truly lead your free agent efforts in a truly important offseason. Like, what’s the point? Is he actually so good a talent evaluator that the Sixers can’t afford to lose him? There is minimal evidence to this point, though he has a good record. Lots of GM candidates -- like, say, David Griffin and Sam Hinkie -- have good records.
The other question is how the most important Sixers, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, would feel if Colangelo stayed. Whoever ran that most prominent of burner accounts -- apparently Colangelo’s wife -- was highly critical of Embiid. That person violated the team’s trust by selling out Markelle Fultz and Jahlil Okafor. If Embiid and Simmons can’t trust Colangelo any longer, it’s time for Colangelo to go.
As such, there really appears to be no upside to keeping Colangelo around. So why debate? Get it over with. Perhaps he caught a bad beat by the initial report focusing on him running those burners -- a loved one going rogue on your behalf is a lesser violation for sure -- and perhaps if that initial report were more circumspect or nailed the right person this wouldn’t all be so bad. But it is what it is. Unless Embiid has had a total change of heart, this should be an easy decision for the Sixers.
Game 3 is Nigh
Wednesday will determine whether the 2018 NBA Finals will possibly be the second Finals sweep in LeBron James’ career or an actual quasi-competitive series. The tip is at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
Remember that the Cavaliers won Game 3 down 2-0 in what felt like a hopeless series in 2016. The Warriors won Game 4, all hell broke loose in Game 5 and Cleveland won out. It could happen.
(It’s almost assuredly not going to happen.)
Links Galore
Good David Murphy column on the importance of the Sixers doing this right instead of doing it fast. Hopefully both objectives can be met simultaneously.
How screwed are the Cavaliers if LeBron leaves? Quite!
LeBron explains what was going through his head in that now infamous video of the Cavaliers’ bench at the end of Game 1. He also shouts out C-Webb, which ... man.
Amid the bizarre, surreal shakeout from the Philadelphia Eagles’ canceled White House visit, LeBron and Steph Curry agree that the NBA champions, whoever it is, will not be visiting President Trump.
Meanwhile, the reigning WNBA champ Minnesota Lynx never got invited to the White House. They were in D.C. and decided to celebrate their achievement by giving back to a local school.
LeBron is on the cover of NBA 2K19. You’ll notice that he’s not wearing a Cavaliers jersey on the cover. Smart design.
The WNBA is letting two captains choose All-Star teams a la the NBA. The system is a little different without dedicated starters.
Brian Windhorst on the overwhelming importance of free agency.
Three WNBA games on Wednesday, including a nightcap 10:30 p.m. ET tip on ESPN2 (Storm-Sparks).
Perfect Zach Lowe headline: what the Warriors are doing to Cleveland is just mean.
How much does sleep matter in the NBA Finals?
New Era’s new NBA Draft caps are out. Blazers hat lookin’ like a million bucks.
Well this is outside the box: the Raptors are interviewing Sarunas Jasikevicius, an NBA flameout but one of the greatest European players ever and a rising star coach, for their head coach job.
The Connecticut Sun finally lost. The Atlanta Dream are just 3-3 but have wins over the Sun and Lynx, which seems impressive.
Fun Scott Cacciola essay on the awe and futility of LeBron’s performances.
Shouts to DeMar DeRozan for winning the Magic Johnson Award for on-court excellence and good media relations.
Diana Taurasi, the G.O.A.T., became the first WNBA player to break the 8,000-point barrier. (Not in one season.)
In the wake of the Las Vegas Golden Knights of Ice Doom’s incredible success, how good could a WNBA expansion team be in Year 1?
The Heat released a new ad. Hassan Whiteside isn’t there.
Be excellent to each other.

Public Enemies (2009)
Biography, Crime, Drama |
Public Enemies is a American biographical crime drama film directed by Michael Mann who co-wrote the screenplay with Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman. It is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34.
Set during the Great Depression, the film chronicles the final years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger as he is pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis, Dillinger’s relationship with Billie Frechette, as well as Purvis’ pursuit of Dillinger’s associates and fellow criminals Homer Van Meter and Baby Face Nelson.
In 1933, John Dillinger infiltrates Indiana State Penitentiary and assists in the jailbreak of his crew. During the firefight, his mentor Walter is shot and killed by the prison guards. Dillinger and company head for a nearby farm, where they change clothes and eat before driving to a safe house on the east-side of Chicago.
After killing Charles Floyd, FBI agent Melvin Purvis is promoted by J. Edgar Hoover to lead the hunt for Dillinger. Purvis shares Hoover’s belief in using modern methods to battle crime, ranging from cataloging fingerprints to tapping telephone lines.
In between a series of bank robberies, Dillinger meets Billie Frechette at a restaurant and impresses her by buying her a fur coat. Frechette falls for Dillinger even after he reveals his identity, and the two become inseparable.

Your Tuesday Morning Roundup
I still can’t believe last night happened. Markelle Fultz played, YES PLAYED, last night.
And he looked pretty good doing so. Like he was the first player to record at least 10 points and eight assists in 15 minutes or less good. It was the first time that happened since…yep, Danny freaking Ainge.

When asked about his “shoulder injury”, Fultz stayed silent on those questions.

But he was happy about the crowd reacting to him playing. He thought they were cheering for Nick Foles.
As for the rest of the game, it wasn’t a good start. The Sixers didn’t have a lead until early in the third quarter and were down as much as 10 before gaining a ton of momentum en route to a 123-104 win. It was their seventh straight win.
Joel Embiid had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Dario Saric also added 20 (plus a fun jump). JJ Redick added 19, Robert Covington scored 18, and Ersan Ilyasova and Marco Belinelli each had 11 points. Ben Simmons had a near triple-double with seven points, 11 assists, and 13 rebounds.

There’s still time to sign up to get Rob Perez’s Sixers’ apology letter.
The Roundup:
Michael Bennett surrendered to police in Houston yesterday and posted his $10,000 bond. He learned of his warrant while in his home in Hawaii and can travel back and forth while out on bond.
Bennett’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, delivered a strong denial to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro:
“He just didn’t do it,” Bennett’s attorney Rusty Hardin said by phone to NBC Sports Philadelphia on Monday evening.
“I strongly feel that way and not just because it’s totally inconsistent with his whole history and not just because he says he didn’t. I’ve talked to other witnesses. We’ve talked to other witnesses who also didn’t see anything.”
Howie Roseman spoke about the Bennett situation yesterday at the NFL owners meeting. He also spoke about other football-related moves, including Nick Foles and his availability and wanting more draft picks.
Head coach Doug Pederson spoke with the media earlier this morning. He wants Darren Sproles back.
Carson Wentz is also ahead of schedule on his rehab.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee has created a set of 40 Super Bowl bobbleheads. And with so many orders placed, it looks like more are on the way.
In Spring Training, the Phillies defeated the Pirates 6-3. Scott Kingery hit a homer and a double in the win. They’ll play the Pirates again in their Spring Training finale in Clearwater today at 1:05 PM. Looks like Jake Arrieta will take the mound today.
Speaking of Kingery, the Phils held a press conference to discuss his new contract and promotion to the big club. He’s had a nice couple of days.
Zach Eflin was sent down to Lehigh Valley in an important bullpen move before the regular season begins. But Tommy Hunter was placed on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.
The team’s Opening Day roster appears to be set.
Thursday also begins the Phillies’ radio experiment of three different Kevins in the booth with Scott Franzke for road games:
“It’s kind of a good way to deal with the situation without Larry totally stepping away to figure out and give us options long-term,” Phillies executive vice president David Buck said. “We’re not going to keep it as three guys doing half the games forever — that’s for sure. You can say it’s an extended trial for all three of them.”
Despite the rotating cast, one constant in the booth will continue to be Franzke, who has handled the full-time play-by-play duties since 2008. Franzke has worked with all three men during spring training, and that has allowed him to build a rapport with the new color analysts, who all bring different strengths, weaknesses and opinions into the booth.
“While it will be a different voice, you’re going to have three games in a row or six games in a row with the same voice. And so you get into the feel of it. You get to know how the rhythm of the team is working out,” Buck said. “Scott’s the key to this, and it’s harder on him than anybody to work with the different analysts.”
The Flyers look to give Dallas their ninth straight loss tonight as they take on the Stars at 8 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Winners and Losers of the 2017 NBA Offseason
Written by Jarrett Adams on August 1, 2017
WINNER – Thunder GM Sam Presti
Thunder GM Sam Presti has had one hell of a run in Oklahoma City. Despite being considered as one of the top NBA GMs over the past decade by NBA pundits, when Kevin Durnat left for Golden State people began to see some holes in his strategy of running an NBA team. For example, for every Thabo Sefolosha player he was able to make relevant (on a cheap salary), some of the deals Presti made was crippling the team. For example, is Enes Kanter really a $75 million dollar player? Kanter didn’t even start over a rookie last year. There’s no way I would have payed Kanter close to $75 million guaranteed.
The writing was on the wall after the way the 2017 NBA playoffs turned out for the Thunder. Quite frankly, Russell Westbrook needed more help. At the beginning of the season, many believed Oladipo could pick up some slack in a new role as Robin to Westbrook’s Batman, but to no avail. Oladipo was actually disappointing and did not live up to expectations this year. Some of that could be because Westbrook dominates the ball, and as a newcomer that can be a hard adjustment. Nonetheless the writing was on the wall. The Thunder were toast if they did not find solutions fast.
No matter how much I despise the Thunder and Sam Presti for trading James Harden, I will give credit when credit is due. Pulling off a trade for Paul George is probably the only thing the Thunder could have done this offseason to ensure future team success. And to only give up the underachieving Oladipo and second year forward Domantas Sabonis, this deal was easily one of the biggest steals in NBA history. Sure they’ll say George is a “one year rental” which could be true, but Presti is betting on a deep playoff run that will persuade him to stay. For example, say the Thunder make the Western Conference Finals and lose to the Warriors. It kind of makes it hard to leave the Thunder, considering you already play for a contender and they can offer you more money than any other team. Bottom line this deal was an absolute steal.
LOSER – Los Angeles Clippers
Is any team falling out of relevancy faster that the LA Clippers? The sky began to fall when Chris Paul decided to start a new chapter and leave to Houston. This is a terrible blow for the Clippers, because the whole allure of playing with “The Point God” Chris Paul is gone now. This will undoubtedly impact future team success. How will they attract free agents without CP3 leading the way? And does Chris Paul leaving put a nail in the coffin for “Lob City”? I think CP3 moving to Houston is the beginning of the end for the LA Clippers. Not to mention they also lost JJ Reddick and Jamal Crawford this offseason as well.
in a surprising move, Blake Griffin resigned; I guess he enjoys his money just as much as being the captain of a sinking ship. Dysfunction has plagued the Clippers before, and this year is nothing new. Doc Rivers was removed as the GM but is still on as head coach. In my view, its only a matter of time before Doc Rivers is replaced as head coach. Before that its was the Donald Sterling saga, Blake injuring his hand with Clippers staff last year – just an array of mistakes. At this moment, the Clippers are simply on a downward trajectory, with the bad news being that it could be a very long time before the Clippers can be championship contenders again.
WINNER – Houston Rockets
If the Clippers are losers this offseason, its only right my next choice for winner would be the team Chris Paul left LA for, the Houston Rockets. Now on paper, the Rockets have the strongest backcourt in the NBA. Some people question whether Harden can play more off-ball after taking so much of the load offensively last year. I think Chris Paul and Harden are good enough players to figure out a way to manage usage rates on the floor this season. The Rockets were also trying to make a play at Carmelo Anthony (still a possibility) before the Knicks withdrew the trade inquiry. Nonetheless, I like what Daryl Morey is doing with this team, he’s followed a path of aggressive moves to bring in more top tier talent to surround Harden, as he should be doing while Harden is still in his prime.
LOSER – Utah Jazz
Losing Gordon Hayward in free agency to the Celtics is a big deal, but not the end of the world for the Utah Jazz. In all reality, they were never championship contenders anyway. But, they have been rebuilding for some years, and were finally relevant again last year. Remember the constant playoff appearances from the Jazz when they had the combo of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer? Well last year was their first year back to relevancy since then. They’ve been slowly building the right way, with good prospects in several positions. But now with Hayward gone, what is this Utah Jazz identity? Simply put, they don’t have one. This Utah Jazz roster follows the saying “Too many Indians, and not enough Chiefs.” For the Jazz ownership, this was a crushing blow and hits home with the fans of the team. They basically have to trot out the same roster as last year but without Gordon Hayward, making the Utah Jazz a major loser this offseason.
WINNER – JJ Reddick & KCP Define the One Year SharpShooter Max Contract
I still remember reading the Bleacher Report update on my phone that the Sixers paid JJ Reddick $23 million on a one-year contract. This was one of the most shocking deals on paper but made a lot of sense for the Sixers. JJ Reddick steps in and fills the shooting guard role perfectly with Markelle Fultz at point and Ben Simmons at small forward. With the lack of success Philly has had over the past few years rebuilding, new Sixers’ GM Bryan Colangelo knew it would take overpaying free agents like this deal indicates. At the end of the day, the deal for Reddick and the Sixers is a win-win for both parties. The Sixers get their guard who can stretch the floor with one of the premiere sharpshooters in the NBA, and JJ Reddick gets immensely overpaid for one year. An overpaid one year deal has its’ advantages, including the fact Reddick doesn’t have commit long term to a franchise that’s been bad for so long. Technically, with the type of money Reddick will make in the 2017-2018 NBA season, he could leave the Sixers and play for less money on a contender if he wanted to next year.
JJ Reddick’s deal set the market for the rest of the NBA’s sharpshooters like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. When the Pistons rescinded his rights and made him an unrestricted free agent, it allowed him to get paid and find a winning situation where his skillset was desperately needed. The Lakers under a new regime were looking to offset some of the scoring they’d lost with guys like Luo Williams and Nick Young, both on new teams for the 2017-2018 season.  They signed KCP on a one year, $18 million dollar contract. When the Lakers want to sign you in free agency and give you that kind of money, you’re probably doing something right. KCP steps in with Lonzo Ball and will most likely see starters minutes to stretch the floor. Again, this deal was another win-win for both sides. The Lakers get their shooter, and KCP gets $18 million next season to start a new chapter in his NBA career.
LOSER – Cleveland Cavaliers
Coming off a loss in the 2017 NBA Finals, a lot of question marks surrounded the Cleveland Cavaliers roster. One thing was certain, and that was they needed to reload with another star to compete with the Warriors. Trotting out the same roster next year would have been fine in the weaker Eastern Conference, but not to win another NBA Championship. The Cavs really needed an aggressive move this offseason. Yet, things really started to go down the wrong path when they decided to fire their GM, David Griffin. David Griffin is credited with three straight finals appearances and the moves that got them in that position. For example, I give him credit for the trade with the Knicks that netted Cleveland JR Smith and Iman Shumpert. It’s still unclear why GM David Griffin was let go, but it most likely dealt with losing to the Warriors while having to pay luxury tax penalties with the NBA’s highest payroll. That is one way, in theory, to upset your owner.
With former GM David Griffin’s departure as the first domino to fall, the Cavs were in discussions to get the likes of Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, but could not close the deal. There was also rumblings they wanted Chauncey Billups to be their next GM, but they didn’t get that deal done either. After a while, the entire foundation began to crumble as leaks of Lebron leaving in 2018 began to surface. NBA media coverage was mainly focused on “Could this be the last year for Lebron in Cleveland?” and “Could Lebron join up with Lonzo Ball and Paul George in Los Angeles in 2018?” Despite these rumors, the claims triggered another chain reaction, in that now Kyrie Irving began making trade demands.
Now this Cleveland Cavaliers situation is getting out of control and the media is having a frenzy with it. One could argue that Kyrie’s request for a trade has damaged the relationship enough with Lebron that not trading him would be the wrong move. In reality, its going to be hard to get through an 82 game season with your two superstars butting heads. The duo has had a great past 3 seasons together, but maybe the tide has run its course. As far as trading Kyrie and to what team, if I was Cavs’ owner Dan Gilbert I would refuse to trade Kyrie anywhere. I revert back to the Kobe conversation when he too requested to be traded from the Lakers. Back then the Buss family was smart enough to hold on to him as an asset and just improve relations. You know what kills trade requests? Success. The Cavs are in desperate need of a trade, but not a trade of Kyrie Irving. My solution would be getting rid of Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, or JR Smith and targeting a guy like Carmelo Anthony. The only way to improve this team and get them on the same track at this point would be to increase the stakes of winning an NBA Championship. With Melo on the Cavs, not only does Lebron James stay long term after 2017-2018 season, but that  would also mean a new big three and thus a new era of Cavaliers basketball.

10 key questions surrounding the 2017 NBA Draft
Seemingly as soon as the Finals ended, the NBA dove right into silly season, with rumors, breaking news, and questions popping up all over the basketball landscape. With the draft quickly approaching, the entire league feels in flux, grasping at ways to compete with the Warriors or make a leap for the future.
Big names like Jimmy Butler and Paul George are rumored to be available, the Cavaliers mutually agreed to part ways with general manager David Griffin, and the Celtics already traded away the top pick in Thursday’s draft.
With still tons of time for moves, schemes, and unexpected changes, this could be one of the wildest draft nights in recent memory. Here are some key questions surrounding the draft.
1. Are the Celtics done dealing?
Boston reaped another major score from the highway-robbery trade that sent Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and others to Brooklyn, and a host of draft assets to the Celtics. After winning the top seed in the East and reaching the conference finals, the Celtics won the lottery and sat atop the draft, on the clock with their pick of the litter.
For most evaluators, the choice was pretty simple: Markelle Fultz is the consensus top prospect and would certainly be able to find a place in Boston’s lineup.
Danny Ainge saw things differently, choosing to send the top pick to Philadelphia for an extra first round pick (either in 2018 or 2019, depending on protections). Logically, the reward doesn’t seem like enough to pass on the chance to take Fultz. In essence, it feels like the Celtics traded a quarter for two dimes.
Perhaps the best reason to have made the trade is in an effort to stockpile pieces to swing another trade. The Celtics may be interested in building a package for George, Butler, or another star. More assets might look better on paper, but Fultz would have been a more attractive trade chip than the two picks Boston swapped for him. If the Celtics do try to make a trade, they might be interested in hanging on to one of the pieces they received from the Sixers to build their ever-evolving roster.
2. Is “The Process” over in Philly?
The Sixers will take Markelle Fultz with the first pick on Thursday and add their third generational talent under the age of 23. After surviving four seasons near the bottom of the league, Philadelphia is poised to grow into one of the most exciting young cores the NBA has seen in recent years.
Amazingly, the Sixers were able to move up to take Fultz without sacrificing any of the foundational pieces of their roster. Trading two marginal European stashed prospects (likely never to play in the NBA) for Nik Stauskas, some dead money, and tons of draft capital lesd the Sixers to swap the 5th pick for the 3rd pick in this year’s draft. The pick they’ll send to Boston in the future came to Philly either via that trade (from Sacramento) or in exchange for lowly Michael Carter-Williams (from the Lakers via Phoenix).
The wheeling and dealing of former GM Sam Hinkie gave the current front office the tools to acquire the perfect guard to fit with their budding young stars in the frontcourt.
3. What direction are the Lakers going?
Philadelphia will certainly take Fultz first, after the Washington guard visited team headquarters to meet the team and run through some physical and medical tests. After that, the Lakers are on the clock and could drastically change the course of the rest of the draft.
The most likely scenario probably ends up with local product Lonzo Ball staying close to home – convenient given the amount of baggage that will accompany Ball to his pro career. The Lakers didn’t need a point guard, until they shipped D’Angelo Russell in a trade to Brooklyn.
Now Ball’s path to his hometown team seemed perfectly paved for his arrival. TNT’s David Aldridge, however, reported that the Lakers discussed trading the second pick to the Kings for both of Sacramento’s top ten picks.
Lakers, per sources, engaged Sacramento in talks that would have sent the 2nd pick to the Kings for Sac’s two 1st-rounders (5 and 10) (1/2)
— David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) June 21, 2017
That would certainly contradict the idea that Los Angeles is in love with Lonzo Ball. Of course, this is all part of the Lakers’ efforts to acquire Paul George, who has expressed interest playing near his childhood home, without a contending team swooping in with a better offer for Indiana. It’s really enough to make anyone’s head spin, let alone a newly constructed front office that includes first time executives Rob Palinka and Magic Johnson.
4. Who will linger in the green room?
Even after the Lakers make their selection, there are no obvious player and team fits throughout the top 10. There is a consensus that the top eight or nine prospects are a ways ahead of the next tier, but the margin between each of those players is seen as microscopic. Each team could have a radically different draft board, causing chaos with each name read by Adam Silver.
This could leave one player believed to be a top five talent sliding into the back of the lottery. Two years ago, Justise Winslow received interest as high as the third pick before finally coming off the board as the tenth pick.
If the Lakers and Suns pass on Lonzo Ball, he could still be available as late as the Knicks’ pick at number 8. With teams nitpicking Malik Monk’s size and defensive potential, the Kentucky guard could slide into the double-digit selections. Dennis Smith Jr. has a super high ceiling and a relatively low floor, meaning we could see him taken by Phoenix fourth or not until Miami with the 14th pick.
5. Are the injury prone players worth the risk?
Recent seasons have been flooded by top draft picks unable to play due to injury. Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Jabari Parker, and Dante Exum have all missed entire seasons in their young careers. Some of these players suffered freak injuries, while others had obvious medical issues when they were selected on draft night.
This year’s draft has three players that stand out as possible rolls-of-the-dice medically.
Harry Giles was the top recruit in the nation coming of high school, but after three knee surgeries, he failed to show any explosiveness in his one year at Duke. His game was predicated on his athletic ability and freakish tendencies, though he looked decidedly human at Duke. He may never bounce back from the wear and tear on his knees.
OG Anunoby also suffered a knee injury at Indiana, namely a torn ACL. He’s likely to be ready for opening night, yet he could be severely hampered as he rehabs back into his former self. Anunoby made his living in Bloomington as a blur on the court, streaking around for blocks, dunks, steals, and highlight package plays. If he can only perform at 80 percent of his former athletic capacity, his game would really suffer until he can develop his jump shot and some other fundamental skills.
Lastly, Dennis Smith Jr. showed a lot of promise at North Carolina State last year in the first year after an ACL tear. Generally, players take two full years to return fully from that injury. If Smith has another gear from what he showed as a freshman, he could be a gamechanger as a pro. If his athletic ability has peaked, he could slide down the draft or prove to be a bust.
6. Which veterans could move on draft night?
The draft usually revolves around the young rookies hearing their names called by their new franchises, but occasionally veterans crash the party and a trade is the big story of the day. With every front office on high alert and making constant phone calls, there will be tons of rumors bouncing around this week.
Draft picks lose value once a player is actually selected (and that player’s value plummets once he takes the court as a rookie). Picks derive their value from the hope and promise of the unknown. Teams looking to unload veterans could be enticed to move on in favor of picks and packages of young talent.
Jimmy Butler and Paul George will dominate the conversation, as they did at the trade deadline, though we’ll also hear plenty about Kevin Love, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, Eric Bledsoe, Jordan Clarkson, Jahlil Okafor, and even Kristaps Porzingis. Dwight Howard, D’Angelo Russell, and Brook Lopez are already on the move and won’t be alone.
7. Will Phil Jackson make Knicks fans happy?
New York crowds are notoriously tough to please, and Phil Jackson has not quite endeared himself to the fans in the Big Apple in his time at the helm. Porzingis is disgruntled, Carmelo Anthony has always been difficult, and the rest of the roster is full of holes and question marks.
The Knicks should be positioned to land a strong player with the 8th pick, particularly a guard to pair with Porzingis. Reports out of New York’s recent draft workouts have centered around prospects learning or being tested on the triangle offense, causing serious concerns about the team’s motivations. Even scarier, reports say the Knicks are at least listening to trade offers for Porzingis. Nothing at Madison Square Garden seems out of the realm of possibility.
Thursday night Phil Jackson could shake-up the entire league with a trade or simply pick the best player available when on the clock. We won’t know until the commissioner reads the 8th pick, but all eyes will be glued to that selection.
8. Can Sacramento successfully move past the DeMarcus Cousins era?
The Kings are still suffering from years of incompetence in the front office, though Sacramento has a real chance to make noise this week. The Kings own two top ten selections, thanks to the DeMarcus Cousins trade during the season.
Those picks will be crucial for the Kings, without a first round pick in 2019 due to the Stauskas trade with Philadelphia. A core built around Buddy Hield, Skal Labissiere, Willie Cauley-Stein, and these two picks doesn’t seem like the beginnings of a contender, yet it is at least a plan and a path to a better situation than the team has been stuck in for the last decade.
This draft is the first major moment in the post-Cousins era for Sacramento, with a chance to really re-direct the franchise.
9. How much will we see from the Ball family?
As much as dedicated NBA fans want to shake off the effects of Lavar Ball as a sideshow, the Ball family will be front and center Thursday night. We could see Lonzo Ball selected as the second pick to his hometown team and the next chapter in a bizarre storybook unfolds. The Lakers are still wheeling and dealing, with Paul George, not Lonzo Ball, seemingly as their main target. There’s a healthy chance the pick is moved or taken for another team, leaving Ball’s future uncertain.
Teams near the top could be scared off by Ball’s strange jump shot, non-existent defense, and the circus that comes along with Lonzo’s skills. If Ball somehow passes by Phoenix at the fourth pick and Sacramento at fifth, we could be treated to the Knicks on the clock in New York City with Lonzo Ball available at number eight.
That’s the dream for NBA Twitter diehards, but no matter where Ball is selected, everyone is expecting quite the show.
10. Will a college senior be drafted in the first round?
In a bit of a quirk, this year’s first 30 picks may all be underclassmen or international prospects. Each of the last 10 drafts have included a senior chosen in the first round. The latest we’ve seen the first senior off the board in the last 10 years was Trevor Booker as the 23rd pick in 2009.
This year either Villanova’s Josh Hart or Colorado’s Derrick White will likely be the first senior taken, and both are considered fringe first rounders. It is completely conceivable that neither player, or any other four year collegian, is taken before Adam Silver passes over pick announcing to Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum for the second round.

A guide to the 2017-18 college basketball season for diehard college football fans
So you’ve been too distracted by football to pay attention to college basketball. That’s ok. You’ve missed a lot, but there’s still plenty of time to catch up.
I know why you’re here. I don’t really understand it, I absolutely don’t approve of it, but I accept it.
I know you only watched bits and pieces of the Maui Invitational because it was an alternative to Thanksgiving family interaction. I know you’ve only seen Trae Young in brief highlight videos on YouTube. I know you have, at best, a very limited understanding of who Pantelis Xidias is.
I know you’re only here because college football is over. It’s cool. You’ve been missing out, but it’s cool. That overtime was crazy.
Thankfully, we at SB Nation college basketball have been living and dying with every dribble that has occurred since the evening of Nov. 10, and we’re here to answer every question you would have asked if you hadn’t been so consumed with SEC rage for the last five months.
Hit me with some questions.
Ok so who is good?
Uh, well you’re actually joining the fray at a bit of an awkward time for that. Sixty percent of the teams in the AP poll lost at least once last week, including four of the teams ranked in the top five. We’ve had three different No. 1 teams, and all three have been knocked from that pedestal after being beaten by an unranked team.
Villanova is 14-1 and back on top of both the polls for the second time this season. West Virginia and Virginia, two teams that also have just one loss, each got votes for the top spot from the AP this week as well. Duke and Michigan State have each lost twice, but both are still safe bets to be in contention for No. 1 seeds a couple months from now.
So what’s the deal with this Trey Young guy?
It’s actually “Trae.”
That doesn’t seem right.
It is.
You’re the expert. So, whatever, go ahead. I guess.
A freshman point guard at Oklahoma, Trae Young has been the biggest thing in college basketball for the season’s first two months. Even though he wasn’t a top 20 player in the class of 2017, Young enters the second week of January leading the country in both points (29.4 ppg) and assists (10.2 apg). The only player in the history of Division I to lead the nation in both those categories at the end of a season was Dick Groat, who averaged 26.0 points and 7.6 assists per game at Duke during the 1951-52 season.
Because of his size, feel for the game, lightning quick release and propensity to pull up from just about any spot on the court, Young has already drawn numerous comparisons to Stephen Curry. Like Curry, Young also figures to have an opportunity to make an even bigger name for himself come March. Oklahoma went just 11-20 last season and wasn’t supposed to do anything overly significant this year. Thanks in large part to Young’s play, the Sooners are currently 12-2, ranked in the top 10, and looking like they’ll be a top five seed come NCAA tournament time.
Weren’t there supposed to be some other really good freshmen though?
Yes. Young’s brilliance has taken some attention away from just how good freshmen like Duke’s Marvin Bagley III and Arizona’s DeAndre Ayton have been.
Bagley, the top-ranked player in the class of 2017, has been every bit as good as advertised. The versatile 6’11 big man is averaging 22.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for Duke, and has had four games this season where he’s scored 30 or more points and grabbed 10 or more rebounds.
Ayton is a physical freak who is also averaging better than 20 and 10 (20.4 ppg, 11.6 rpg). He might be getting more attention if Arizona, the No. 2 team in the country to start the year, hadn’t gone 0-for-3 at the Battle 4 Atlantis in November. They ripped off a nine-game winning streak after that, but were dealt an upset loss by Colorado over the weekend. Still, yeah, Ayton is really, really good.
Wasn’t there another kid, though? Fultz or something?
Markelle Fultz is a rookie in the NBA now. He was the No. 1 pick in the draft last year.
But I don’t remember him playing in college at all.
That is completely understandable. You’re not alone.
Who am I thinking of?
My guess is Michael Porter Jr. of Missouri, the guy who was the No. 1 player in the 2017 class before Bagley reclassified.
Reclassifying is so weird to me. Like, you can just decide that you’re done with high school before you even start your senior year and everyone is just, like, “cool, go get ‘em in college?”
Yes, reclassifying is very weird, but we don’t have time to get into that.
So what’s Porter’s deal? How good has he been?
Well, it’s a little tough to explain.
Porter started Missouri’s first game of the season, but played just two minutes before being pulled because of a mysterious injury. That injury kept him out for the next week and then later kept him from even sitting on the bench because Missouri said it was too uncomfortable for Porter to sit, so he had to watch the games lying down in the locker room.
Eventually, it was announced that Porter would have microdiscectomy surgery of the L3-L4 spinal discs. It was also announced that the procedure would keep him off the court for three to four months, basically meaning that Porter’s college career lasted an entirety of two minutes.
ALTHOUGH, for the last couple of weeks, Porter has been making vague social media posts hinting that he might be back for Missouri before the end of the season. It could be a worthwhile cause for Porter. The Tigers are 11-4 with a couple of decent wins and no atrocious losses. Porter’s return could be what gets them back into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2013.
Show me come cool dunks.
Ok. Unnecessarily demanding and also not a question, but ok.
youtube
So how bad is the SEC this year? SEC basketball fever, right? haha.
Umm, actually the SEC sort of might be pretty good at basketball this year. Kentucky doesn’t look quite as formidable as they have in years past, but Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Missouri and Alabama all have the potential to make the tournament and potentially make some noise once they’re there. It should be an extremely competitive conference, and one of the most fun leagues to follow for the next two months.
So it’s the best conference?
I wouldn’t go quite that far.
The Big 12 currently has four teams ranked in the top 12 and five in the top 16. The league posted the best combined record in non-conference play, and each member of the league is currently at least four games above .500.
Kansas gonna win it for the 7,000th year in a row?
It does not appear to be a sure thing this year, but if Kansas does win at least a share of the Big 12 regular season for the 14th year in a row, it would break a tie with UCLA for the most consecutive league titles all-time.
So they’re gonna do it?
Yeah, probably.
Hey show me some buzzer-beaters.
We’ll start with William & Mary’s Oliver Tot, who had played 18 minutes without recording a single stat before doing this:
youtube
And then we’ve got a little bit of Stanford’s Daejon Davis for your brain:
youtube
And then we’ll wrap things up with this different buzzer-beater from Florida’s Chris Chiozza:
youtube
How’s Rick Pitino’s team doing?
Pitino was fired just before the start of the season after an FBI probe into college basketball revealed that one of his assistants had been working with adidas to funnel money to a recruit. Former player and assistant David Padgett is serving as Louisville’s interim head coach.
FBI probe into college basketball? Tell me more.
We don’t have time. Here’s a summary of every team, coach and player that has been affected.
Gonzaga good again? I bet Gonzaga’s good again.
Gonzaga’s pretty good.
Wichita State?
Even better.
DePaul?
Nope.
Ahh, I was just testin’ ya. Any chance the Big Ten breaks that national championship drought?
It’s possible. The conference on the whole isn’t especially great, but both Michigan State and Purdue would seem to have a realistic chance at winning six straight in March. They’ll also have an extra week to prepare for the Big Dance. The Big Ten is playing its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden a week earlier than the other power conferences are playing their league tournaments.
Only in New York.
Only in New York.
What about the West Coast streak? Any chance a team out there can win it all and break that streak?
Also possible, but less likely. Arizona State has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, but lost its first two Pac-12 games. Arizona is still one of the most talented teams in the country, but hasn’t been able to put it all together just yet. Gonzaga, as mentioned earlier, is good again, but they don’t seem to be quite as built for March as they were a year ago.
So what’s your Final Four?
We’re not doing this.
Why not?
It’s pointless to pick a Final Four when so much of who makes up the Final Four is based on tournament draw. I could wind up picking three teams that all end up in the same region on Selection Sunday.
Just do it.
Duke, Michigan State, Villanova and ... someone wild ... give me Seton Hall.
Did Rumeal Robinson really get fouled in 1989?
We’re done here.

Your Friday Morning Roundup
TJ’s face best exemplifies the December 76ers.
Joel Embiid was first “questionable”, then became “probable”, before being declared “out” about 30 minutes before gametime. That whole phase took about eight hours. That in itself is an entirely separate problem from the play on the hardwood. Yesterday’s injury report consisted of six players (Justin Anderson, Trevor Booker [who did play last night], Embiid, Markelle Fultz, Furkan Korkmaz, and JJ Redick).
The Sixers fell to the Toronto Raptors 114-109 at home after leading the game by as much as 22. Toronto went on a 30-8 run to take command of the game and once again disappoint the Sixer crowd. Dario Saric had a near triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists, along with a pair of blocks. Ben Simmons added 20 points, and Robert Covington collected 19. But that was nowhere near DeMar DeRozan’s 45 points and Kyle Lowry’s 23.
The team has lost eight of their last nine games, 2-10 since the calendar turned to December, and 4-12 since Thanksgiving.
Is Brett Brown really in the hot seat now? I’m not so sure about that. It could be another overreaction regarding the team’s recent struggles, but I do think there is some concern that his job isn’t safe going into next season. This was supposed to be “the year” the Sixers began to make their mark in the Eastern Conference in a good way.
David Fizdale is available by the way.
Sixers play Toronto again in the second part of their home-and-home Saturday afternoon at 5 PM.
The Roundup:
Check out the latest Crossing Broadcast, where Kyle, Adam, and Russ discuss last night’s game, among other topics.
Did you happen to watch the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl last night? Most of you probably didn’t and if you did (like me), bless your heart. Temple played and beat Florida International 28-3 for the team’s first bowl victory since the 2011 Gildan New Mexico Bowl over Wyoming.
Frank Nutile went 18-of-28 for 254 yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown, while David Hood rushed for 78 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown. Keith Kirkwood led all receivers with six catched for 96 yards.
The Temple defense recorded a bowl-record 7.5 sacks and three turnovers, a season-high.
The Owls finish the season at 7-6.
The Eagles are wearing black on Christmas. Not a huge surprise there.
But there were a couple of surprises at practice yesterday, specifically with those who didn’t practice.
#Eagles Thursday Injury Report DNP: DE Barnett (groin), CB Mills (ankle) Limited: LB Kendricks (foot), G Wisniewski (ankle) Full: CB Robinson (concussion), G Warmack (hamstring)
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 21, 2017
Patrick Robinson did clear the concussion protocol and he’s all good with that and with defensive backs coach Cory Undlin.
Fellow cornerback Ronald Darby apologized for his Twitter rant from earlier in the week after ripping on fans and the media for criticism of his poor play:
“I was just in my feelings,” Darby said. “I got to grow up. I had a horrible game, probably one of the worst games I have ever played. And that ain’t nobody’s fault. People expect highly of us. I do apologize to you all, too, for that. That was childish.”
Most Eagles fans don’t care about Darby’s social media behavior, unless it in some way indicates that he can’t handle the mental demands of the NFL. Cornerback may be the most psychologically taxing position to play, and those who succeed typically have short memories.
“It wasn’t the first time I played bad,” Darby said. “I play corner. There could be games like when you cover tight on somebody, and they make a catch on you the whole game.”
Whenever he’s not practicing or on the field for football, backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld aims to make children’s lives better.
Off-day for the Flyers, but that doesn’t mean we can’t compare Ivan Provorov to Nicklas Lidstrom, right?
In the past few games, Nolan Patrick has started to make some strides with the Flyers.
The Phillies have brought back Rico Brogna and Wes Helms to help out as minor league coaches. They also named former Cubs third base coach Gary Jones as manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
One game in college hoops, as Loyola defeated Drexel 68-62. Kurk Lee had 20 points for the Dragons, while Austin Williams put up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Three games today, with Temple in Georgia to take on the Bulldogs at 1 PM on SEC Network, La Salle traveling to Bucknell at 7 PM, and top-ranked Villanova playing Hofstra in Uniondale at 8:30 PM on FS1.
In other sports news, legendary broadcaster Dick Enberg died at the age of 82.
Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope can play and practice in California while serving a 25-day prison sentence stemming from an incident back in March.
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy was arrested after he threatened a man with a hammer.
The Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,00 after violating the league’s concussion protocol with Russell Wilson.
Florida State is playing in a bowl game they shouldn’t be playing in, thanks to a Reddit user.
WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon is selling $100 million worth of shares in order to start a new company, which might include a new pro football league.
Former New York Met Darryl Strawberry sometimes had sex in between innings during his playing career.
In the news, four people were shot in Southwest Philadelphia after a domestic dispute.
Papa John’s founder John Schnatter is stepping down as CEO of the company after he made controversial remarks about the national anthem protests by NFL players.
A government shutdown ain’t happening.
Life expectancy in the country dropped for the second straight year.
The past month for the Sixers, in one video:
