In a letter to fellow lawmakers, Rep. Rita Fleming, Democrat-Jeffersonville, pushed back on criticism that her birth control bill plays into the hands of anti-abortion advocates by excluding IUDs.
“This should not be politicized,” she wrote in a letter. “It is the optimal way to help women who need it most.”
...
But there’s another player in the conversation: Indiana Right to Life, an anti-abortion group that pushed for the state’s recent near-total ban on the procedure. Bill co-author Rep. Cindy Ledbetter, R-Evansville, testified that IUDs were excluded from the bill because of Indiana Right to Life’s concerns that IUDs are a form of abortion. In truth, IUDs prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg, either through a copper implant or the release of hormones
...
“Every single year, choices in reproductive health are constantly being clawed back, taken away, banned in the state of Indiana,” Sen. Shelli Yoder, D-Bloomington, said in an interview with Mirror Indy. “I see the writing on the wall with what’s happened with (HB) 1426.”
Yoder and Sen. J.D. Ford, D-Indianapolis, were the sole votes against advancing the bill to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Yoder, who cannot use hormonal birth control herself because of medical issues, said all forms of contraceptives should be offered to Indiana Medicaid patients. “I am very concerned that Right to Life has been effective in messaging a lie about IUDs,” Yoder said.

Video from Paul Lee:
“CBS News outtakes of a rally in support of Claude M. Lightfoot (1910–91) (10:57), Illinois executive secretary and alternate member of the national committee of the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA), addressed, among others, by singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson, Sr. (02:04), Washington Park, Chicago, Ill., Oct. 3, 1954. The rally was sponsored by the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), a CPUSA front group. The "Mr. March" Robeson refers to at 06:37 was Herbert (Herb) March, a Jewish Communist trade unionist. At the end of his remarks, Robeson sings a portion of "John Henry" (09:11), a folk song popularized by Huddie William (Lead Belly) Ledbetter and Woody Guthrie. At the end of the video (12:28), William L. Patterson (1891-1980), executive director of the CRC, could be seen sitting between Robeson and Lightfoot. In 1951, Patterson submitted to the United Nations "We Charge Genocide," a petition on behalf of African Americans. CLAUDE LIGHTFOOT "On June 26, 1954, Lightfoot was arrested on the basis of a secret indictment returned by a federal grand jury in May. He was charged with membership in the Communist Party and knowledge of the Party's objectives 'to teach and advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States by force and violence as speedily as circumstances would permit' as specified in the Membership Clause" of the Alien Registration Act of 1940, or Smith Act. "He believed that the U.S. government targeted him in order to send a message to Black Americans to stay away from the Communists (and from civil rights activities in general. "The Lightfoot case was appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where Lightfoot was acquitted in 1964" (http://chsmedia.org/media/fa/fa/M-L/L...). TARGET Robeson was also a target of the reactionary hysteria whipped up by conservative Republican Wisconsin Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (07:19), known as McCarthyism. Robeson was a steadfast fighter for civil rights at home (03:39), a champion of colonized peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America (04:03) and working peoples around the world (04:16), a longtime and fervent admirer and supporter of World-War-II-ally-turned-Cold-War-enemy the Soviet Union (now Russia) (06:57) and a close ally of the CPUSA (04:35), which was formally outlawed by the Communist Control Act of 1954. As a result, he was refused a passport to travel abroad by the Department of State (04:25) from 1950-58. The government admitted in open court that his passport was withdrawn due to his activities "in behalf of the colonial peoples of Africa" and because it considered him "a spokesman for large sections of Negro Americans" and "disapproved ... [of his] political activities and associations abroad" (Lenwood G. Davis, "Paul Robeson Had To Be Silenced," The Crisis, April 1984, p. 205). Once the most well-known "black" persons in the world, Robeson, who moved to Great Britain in 1958 and returned to the U. S. in 1963, his health broken, was reduced to obscurity at the very moment that the modern civil-rights movement was reaching its apex. ROBESON AND CHICAGO According to informers for J. Edgar Hoover's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which surveilled and harassed Robeson and thousands of other radicals, Robeson, a frequent visitor to the Windy Cindy, returned to Chicago later in October 1954. He performed at concerts at the Persian Hotel, sponsored by the Chicago Committee for Paul Robeson, on Oct. 29 and at the Chopin Cultural Center, another CPUSA front, on Oct. 31 (Chicago FBI Report, "Paul Robeson, wa [with aliases]; Internal Security-C [Communist]," Jan. 6, 1955, p. 11, FBI headquarters file on Robeson, 100-12304, serial no. 314).
