Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB On Friday morning it came down to the last game of the season with Country Bowls Cubs holding onto 5th position by 1 point against the Roundheads, so everything was to play for. The Cubs welcomed San Luis Pumas and were motivated to score as many points as possible and they did not disappoint. With 4 out of 5 rinks winning and the overall shots were a positive difference to the cubs of 44, can they hold onto 5th place? The newly formed cubs have excelled in their first year at competitive bowling and deserve every success. Winning rinks were Sandra McIlroy, John Burke & John Mallet, Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andrew Bryce, Dave Smith, Dot Davies & Niel West and finally Sheena Mallet, Derek Lewis and Peter Robins. Great result Cubs. Country Bowls Geckos were away for their last match of the season in  the afternoon against Quesada Swans. From the off the Geckos took command with a real determination to finish the season on a high with another good win.  A couple of the rinks were very close at the halfway mark and in the second half one rink was nip and tuck to the very end. By the 18th end the Geckos had their wish and were well up on all but one rink which was 3 shots up going into the last end, but unfortunately managed to drop 4 shots losing them the game by one shot. The victors were: Viv Brown, Pat Ray, Brian Ray, 20-12; John Jukes, Graham Richardson, Wayne Osguthorpe, 24-10; Carole Donnellan, Les Turner, Den Birkett, 18-13;  Really bad  luck to Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner & Jim Rennie who have been so successful all season to lose by just one shot on the last end.  Well done the Geckos. For more information on Country Bowls please visit the website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com tel 966191552 or email [email protected] EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday morning the Palominos entertained Greenlands Chestnuts and played well to take 3 rinks and the overall shots, with a wind that was tricky to say the least. A good result for the Palominos. The Raiders were at Vistabella playing the Buggies and met some strong opposition, though coming away without a point. Sometimes the opposition is just too strong. Meanwhile the Pintos were at Mazarron playing the Miners, the stiff breeze making playing a mat with a reduction from 8 rinks to 7, just a little difficult, never seems to work well to me. But as always the company was good and we enjoyed the day, though alas we came away with just one point. Friday found the Rangers playing host to La Marina Merlins, playing well and ending with 3 rinks and the overall shots by just the one, a good result showing that the extra moment of concentration can bring you the extra 2 points. Meanwhile the Mustangs were at Greenlands against the Oaks and put in a good effort and particularly perseverance in the case of John Skipper’s trip, getting used to the rink until 15-1 down, then coming back to win 17-16. The Mustangs came away with 2 rinks, a very good away result. We should at the end of the season thank the team captains for their sterling efforts. In the afternoon the Broncos were at home to La Manga Crusaders and had a great day, taking full advantage of the home mat by taking all the available points. Val Ryder, Sheila Cox and Mike Cox 18-17. Emma Walsh, Ann C Taylor and Keith Longshaw 25-10. Maria Wilkinson, Liam Foley and Rob Clark 33-10. Gill Bartlett, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 22-5. Brian Yates, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 27-11. Costa Blanca Bowls Roundup
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB The Pintos started the week at Greenlands playing their Sycamores and had a splendid, if challenging morning, played in good company. The Pintos came away with two rinks, which is always a good away result and further rink was just a 3 point deficit. Meanwhile the Raiders were at home to the Romulans from San Luis, who struggled to adjust to the mat, enabling the Raiders playing well to take 4 rinks. In the afternoon the Palominos were at San Luis against the Vulcans and came away with one rink, but many of the inexperienced players will have learnt much about handling a tricky mat. On Friday morning the Rangers found themselves, up against a very over strength Vistabella Swingers at home, I do find it tragic to see such obvious A division quality players playing in the C division, it can’t be good for all round moral. But there it is, although the Rangers took just the one rink, they played well under the circumstances and should only consider the quality of their own shots and be proud. In the afternoon the Mustangs entertained a strong San Luis Lions and played some fine bowls in some close matches, although one or two of us might be disappointed with our play today. But our older bodies don’t always behave as they should and we still enjoy the game and company. But the final score wasn’t bad against the Lions, who played well; the Mustangs took two rinks and had a shots deficit of just ten. Meanwhile the Broncos were at Quesada against the Swifts and put in a good show in taking two rinks, always a good result away from home. The Falcons really need to concentrate on the last 5 matches, 3 of which are at home so we have no excuse.  It is our advantage so let’s use it. On Friday the Royals were away to La Manga.  That is the end of that report!!  I believe our captain used the word Massacre. It is an experience playing at La Manga being the only grass surface.  All you could hear from the other rinks was “you need to give it more welly”, as the bowls are falling short.  In saying all that, we did manage to produce some good bowling, just not enough.  The final result was 46 shots for to 114 against giving us a grand total of zero to 12 against. I cannot not mention the friendly match that both sides put out.  All played in good spirits, fun and enjoyment.  The end result being a draw 13 -13. The Royals also have 5 remaining matches, 3 of which are at home, so the same applies.  We have to gain points at home. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. Very pleasant conditions and some unseasonably high temperatures for February. There have been some very hard matches for the Quesada squads - some that have impacted the league positions. But there’s still a few weeks to go, so plenty to play for.  In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls played San Luis Trekkers who won the match 8-4 and 98-88. Unfortunately this means the Pearls have slipped to 4th in the league but only 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles so hopefully a good win next week will see them back in 3rd. The Diamonds suffered their highest loss of the season at home to leaders San Luis Klingons. San Luis won on all 5 rinks with 103 shots to Quesada’s 49 and won the match 12-0. Quesada Rubies also had a bad day with a defeat by Greenlands Maples, who won 12-0 and shots 127-63. Results in the Southern League included a win for Quesada Swallows against San Miguel Bulldogs. The Swallows won the match 8-4 points and 84-75. A different story for the Swifts however, playing rivals San Miguel boxers. Although there were some close matches on some rinks, San Miguel boxers played extremely well and walked away with all 12 points and shots 108-64. This defeat means the Swifts will slip to 4th place in the league and now leave themselves a lot of work to do to try to catch up. Finally in this league, Quesada Swans also lost to La Siesta Golds, who won the match 8-4 points but Quesada won the shots 88-79. In the Winter league, Quesada played host to Benitachell in an incredibly close and competitive match resulting in a draw, 6 points each and the shots were 87 Quesada and 85 BBC. This performance means Quesada are now in 4th place in the league. Meantime, in the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers played San Luis Condors in another close match, which the Panthers won 6-2 points and 53-47 shots. Just a reminder that we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members.  So come along and see what we have to offer! Costa Blanca Bowls Roundup 26 Jan 2019
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB Monday saw La Siesta Sputniks orbiting around the Country Bowls rinks. Three of the Sputniks got ‘lost in space’ but two of them managed to hang around giving a result of Flamingos 8 Sputniks 4. Winning rinks; Agnes Burke, Pat Ray & Brian Ray 25 – 9 Rob Hallam, Graham Richardson & Jim Rennie 27 – 8 Craig Dyson, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor 19 – 10 Well done Flamingos. Country Bowls welcomed La Siesta Silvers on a beautiful dry Friday morning. Both teams were poised to take the points and as the wind picked up, the individual matches were thrown into turmoil. Rinks 5 & 6 both playing two styles of game and strategy and adjustments were the order of the day. In the end it was 3 – 2 to the Silvers with the Cubs taking the shots by 1. 76 – 75. Overall a great days bowling and a very fair 6 – 6 result. Winning rinks; Dean Webb, Derek Lewis & John Mallet Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andy Bryce. Good work Cubs. The second game of the day saw the Geckos away in the afternoon to San Luis Leopards with no less wind than the morning match. Winning rinks; Pat Emmett, Les Turner & Jim Rennie 26 – 14 Pat Patton, Dennis Wade & Brian Patton 22 – 9 John Jukes, Pat Ray & Wayne Osguthorpe drew with 16 – 16 Shots 97 – 83. Points 7 – 5. Well done Geckos. For more information on Country Bowls please visit the website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com, email [email protected], or telephone 966191552. El Rancho Bowls Club Monday found the Palominos having a bye. The Pintos played the Hawks at Horadada, with a stiff cold breeze bringing out the thermals and many layers, of course by the end of the match we had warmed up. The Pintos took a while to get used to the mat and in the end came away with two rinks, never a bad score away from home.In the afternoon the Raiders were at San Miguel playing their Pointers, which turned out to be a tough match, as we would expect as San Miguel always turn out a good team particularly with the home advantage, it's a hard call. The Raiders came away without a point but were not shamed. Friday morning found the Mustangs entertaining Emerald Isle Cavaliers on a wonderful morning with a stiff breeze, which made the bowling very tricky. Most of the way through the match the Mustangs were behind on all rinks, but came good to take 4 of the rinks and the overall shots by just the one shot. The Broncos were at Horadada playing the Royals and put in a good performance to take 3 rinks, a very good away result. The Rangers played the Conquistadors at Vistabella and were a trip short and no doubt the wind caused a few problems. They came away with one rink, but enjoyed the challenge. The annual President’s versus Captain’s teams will be played on wednesday 6th February, all are invited to bring donations of non perishable foodstuff, toiletries and unwanted clothing for Reach-out a charity for the homeless.  For further membership information contact Sheila Cox at [email protected] or Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at [email protected] Emerald Isle Bowls with Elwyn Morris Monday took the Titans to La Marina Explorers, and they had a great 10-2 aggregate 97-81, winners were M Riley P Coffey I Brewster 21-13, D Rhodes K Jolliffe D Gerrard 21-14, M Veale G Odell J Smyth 19-14    J Pooley D Leeming B Kavanagh 15-14 Neptunes played at home against Monte Mar Torreodores and had a fine 12-0, aggregate of 98-55    winners were M Whitelock J Westall P Heaney 30-9, D Horne S Wickens D Donovan 20-12, E Morris C Parsons A Malcolm 17-14, A Brown S Watson C Warner 14-13 Moonrakers played at home against La Marina Pathfinders, and had a good 10-2 aggregate 108-70, winners were, L Harris P Willicott R Clive 25-9, D Close J Loughran E Bennett 25-17, ,I Hughes G Ponsford M Willicott 24-10, V Cameron G Dyer P Dix 24-10, this trip scored a HOT SHOT Saturns travelled to La Siesta Pioneers and they got beaten 4-8 aggregate 85-94, winners were C Selby G Smith E Shepperd 26-19, J Elliott  F Thomas R Ede 17-14 Wed saw the Emerald Isle travel to BBC in the winter league, and they lost 4-8 aggregate 86-90 winners were R Clive C Smyth M Odell C Lindgren 17-12, D Jones M Veale J Mulloy P Coffey 20-17. Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham On Monday in the Discovery Division the Falcons were at home to El Rancho pintos and this was a much better result for us giving the team some much needed points.  We won on three rinks, two of which were a good shot difference.  One rink only lost by one shot.  Our winning rinks were: Carol Linehan, Mark Jukes and Terry Hucknall 20 – 15 Tracey Paffet, Ken Barber and Roy Thomson 26 – 13 Wayne Jackson, Les Davies and Mick Kirby 24 - 11 The shots for was 97 and the shots against was 73, giving us the overall shots.  The final result was 8 points to Horadada and 4 points to El Rancho. Very well played to all of the team.  A great result. On Friday in the Southern League Horadada Royals were at home to El Rancho Broncos and what looked like a promising start for the Royals being ahead on three rinks, the Broncos soon caught up and in one rink overtook the Royals.  The final result was we won on two rinks and gained the overall shots which were 92 for to 74 against.  This gave us 6 points and made the match a draw.  One of the rinks only lost by 1 shot.  Once again so close, yet so far.  Our winning rinks were: Tracey Paffet, Wayne Jackson and Terry Hucknall 23 – 8 Peter Davis, Fred Trigwell and Sheila Westwood 25 – 10 Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ Horadada, we have plenty matches left to play to move up those tables. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. We are also on Facebook Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson In the South Alicante Winter League all 3 Quesada squads played San Miguel teams this week. Quesada Pearls travelled to San Miguel to play the Beagles for a morning of very competitive bowling. Due to illness, the Pearls were unable to field a full squad but they won on 3 of the 4 rinks played and achieved 68 to 66 shots before penalties of 2 points deducted. They’ve maintained their 4th place in the league, just one point behind 3rd place San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile on a lovely sunny morning perfect for bowling, the Diamonds entertained San Miguel Alsatians, currently a couple of places below them in the League, so a result was a priority for both teams. Quesada won 3-2 rinks but the shots went to San Miguel by the narrowest of margins 91-90. The points were drawn 6 each so the Diamonds maintained their position in the league. The Rubies also hosted San Miguel - the Dalmatians. Not the best of days for the Rubies who lost the match 2 -10 and the shots were 65 to San Miguels 112. Onwards and upwards Rubies, plenty more matches to play! In the Southern League, Quesada Swifts travelled to Mazarron for a sunny and warm days bowling. Another important league match between Mazarron the leaders and the Swifts in second place, so everything to play for. After a tough morning, Mazarron were victorious winning 4-1 rinks and 97 to 54 shots, winning the match 10 points to 2 and maintaining their lead at the top of the league. In the Winter league, Quesada hosted Javea and the match ended in a draw 6 points each. In the Federated 4’s, Quesada Panthers played San Miguel Mohawks. Quesada won the rinks 2-1 but lost the shots by one, 48-49, so the match ended in a draw 6 points each. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors, and we have free coaching for new members.  So come along and see what we have to offer! Costa Blanca Sth Bowls Roundup 6 July 18
San Miguel Bowls Club – week ending 6th July By Gail Willshire The Moors finished the league with a flourish this week, winning 14:0 away to Horadada Hawks, 148 points to 74. This result meant the team finished the season unbeaten, 32 points ahead of the nearest rivals and with a massive shot difference of 378. The results were as follows: Lynn Greenland, Linda Plaisted & Gary Raby 17:14; Jan Allen, Stuart Hemmings & Dave Greenland 26:12; Gail Willshire, Brian Allen & Fred Willshire 27:15; Tony Sansom, Don Whitney & Mary Dyer 35:6; Bob Nesbitt, Cliff Plaisted & Stuart Denholm 21:10 and Sue Milner, Lee Sinclair & Steve Cantley 22:17. The Christians faced the squad at the top of league, San Luis Wellingtons, hoping to get enough points to avoid relegation. Pat McEwan, Dave Champion & Dave McEwan managed a draw 16:16 against one of the most experenced trips on the Costa Blanca, and were holding the game until the opposition skip drew in with his last wood. Sheila Errington, Sandie Hannah & Brian Errington also managed a draw 15:15 against another very experienced team. The game was nip and tuck, 15:14 going into the final end when the opposition skip again came in for shot with his last wood. Ian hope, Alan Dobie & Mike Douglas finished with another draw 16:16, after having been 10:4 down after 9 ends but picking up a 5 on the 10th, bringing them back into the game. 3 points meant they had to rely on other results to see what would befall them, but this was just enough to keep them safe. San Miguel look forward to having two teams in the top division again next year. The Wasps sessions have come to an end for the summer but will start again on Wednesday 5th September 1:30 for 2:00. €5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and woods available to borrow. For further information on San Miguel Bowls Club please contact the President Stuart Hemmings on 965720461, or the Secretary Gail Willshire on 965020492. Vistabella Bowls Report With Lynne Bishop The final game of the South Alicante Summer league for the GREENWAYS was played on Monday at home against the Quesada Blenheims, the Blenheims stood  a chance of winning the league but the Greenways team gave them a good fight for points, both sides had three wins but the overall shots swung in favour of the Greenways.  Captain Arthur Brown & vice Maggie Furness had a tough task of keeping over forty available players happy, they did incredibly well and the Greenways eventually finished fourth in the league..hopefully next year we will be able to submit two teams. Winning the points on this occasion were Mike Irwin, Arthur Brown & Peter Whitehall 21-9. Lynne Bishop, Mike Regan & Pat Rafferty 21-10 and Del Gunning, Charlie Watkins & Eric Bishop 20-10. Shots, VB 104(8) - 99(6) Quesada. Congratulations to San Luis the 2018  league Champions..they won every game except for one...the one we won! Thank you to all our Team Captains & Selectors for their hard work..a daunting task at times. Sue Wilson organised a Saturday morning Competition which  ran over eight weeks and was won by Mike Irwin, Mike was neck and neck with his closest contender Frank Barclay, it was so close it was down to a measure on a ditched wood that went in favour of Mike..Congratulations Mike and commiserations to Frank. Thank you Sue for running this. SABA KNOCKOUT. Both Lin Watkins & Maggie Furness have earned themselves a place in the semi finals of the Ladies Singles when they will be playing each other, good luck ladies...one of you will be in the final representing Vistabella! Also Lin & Charlie Watkins are through to the semi final of the mixed pairs. Good luck to all the Vistabella competitors in their next rounds, Arthur Brown & Martin Foulcer. Del Gunning & Gary Thorpe in the men’s pairs. Sandra Burrows & Maggie Furness in the Ladies pairs and Stuart Allman & Maggie Furness in the mixed pairs. That’s me now signing off for the summer...Hasta luego! COUNTRY BOWLS by Geoff Paylor The Country Bowls ‘ Badger’s’ travelled to San Luis on Monday 5th July for the last match of the summer season, and what a match, could it have been any closer with both teams going for second spot.? The morning was very hot as was some of the bowling. The ‘Badger’s’ played well against a very strong team from San Luis with  Brenda Jiggins, John Hassell and John Mallet winning with an amazing score of 36 – 2. ,  Joel Fernandez, Niel West and Phil Warrington with a score of 26 – 14. . 4 points in the bag. The team of Geoff Eggleton, Graham Richardson and Geoff Paylor met a very good trio and a skipper in good form losing 15 – 14. Ben Noke, Derek Jiggins and Andy Bryce played a very close game losing with a score of 12 – 14 on the last end. Craig Dyson in his first role as skip along with Dot Davies and Dave belton, and also Lynne Bryce in her first role as skip with Dean Webb and Dave Smith fought hard but were overcome in the end by the teams from San Luis.. The shot difference near the end was to our advantage and I started to believe we could grab 2nd spot in the league but the final couple of ends turned against us and we lost the shots 102 – 103 and settle for 3rd place which is a fantastic result for Country Bowls. As the out going skipper I would like to thank everyone but especially Andy Bryce, Ben Noke and Phil Warrington without whom we might not have finished the season.  Thank you to you all.  And a final note from Country Bowls committee to say a big thank you to Geoff Paylor for organising the teams. Thank you Geoff for your hard work.  For anymore information on Country Bowls please visit the website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com email [email protected] or ring 868183703 Emerald Isle Bowls Club by Elwyn Morris Monday the Victors travelled to Quesada Lancasters and had a great 10-4, aggregate 104-103 win. The winning trips were: S Kavanagh E Morris B Kavanagh 24-11 M Riley Parsons K Jolliffe 20-19, M Whitelock M Veale G Odell  17-16 C Thomas G Shoots M Odell  13-12 The Vulcans played La Siesta Wasps at home and the visitors took the game 8-6, aggregate 99-122, winning trips were A Brown S Watson  Close 24-11  B Doran L Freeman J Mullarkey 25-13, T Capewell C Ayling P Willicott 24-16 Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham On Monday of this week we played the last match of the Summer League Hurricane Division at home to San Miguel Moors.  To say it was not a good result for us is a bit tame as we lost on all six rinks and gained zero points.  However, in saying that, San Miguel put out their best players and we were up against it right from the start.  San Miguel played very well and well done to them to top the league.  The final shots were 74 for and 148 against.  Horadada finished up second bottom of the table with 57 points.  If only one team go down then this will be a good finishing result for us given the size of our club.  Well done to all the members who participated in the team and think positive for next season.  Thanks goes to our Team Captain Bill Stanaway for his efforts on the team selection.  It is never an easy job. After the match our spirits were raised with a bit of lunch and a drink at the Asia Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada.  A good laugh and a natter soon chased away the blues. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson It’s been a nervous but exciting week for Quesada with the last matches of the season deciding the winners and losers! In the VCL league QBC Tigers finished the season with a fantastic result winning the Division C league by 11 points and confirming their promotion to Division B next season. The Lions were hot on the heels of San Luis Falcons throughout the season but couldn’t quite catch them and finished second in Division A of the VCL league. Great performances from the whole team in all of their games. The newly formed Cheetahs were QBC’s third team in the VCL league. Although finishing in last place in Division C, they put up a creditable performance against other experienced teams whilst managing the additional challenges of a very small squad. The camaraderie and support throughout the team has been a joy and this tenacious and determined team will be back next season to fight again! In the South Alicante Summer League, the Lancasters had a nail-biting match against the Emerald Isle Victors who won 10-4. But the Lancasters came extremely close to reversing the score and remaining in the division as 3 rinks went to the wire, only losing by one shot, including missing the overall shots by only one. Well done to the two winning rinks:  Mel Highland, Peter Farrell, Peter Bradbury, and Colin Highland, Angie Goddard and Steve Gray. The Blenheims also suffered a last minute disappointment following a very tough match against Vistabella Greenways. They needed 11 points from the match to overtake San Luis Wellingtons at the top of the league but it wasn’t to be. Vistabella won the match 8-6 with shots 104-99 which means The Blenheims finished the season in second place. Overall its been a very competitive season, with strong performances and undoubted commitment and tenacity from all of the Quesada members and players. Thanks to the Captains and selectors of the teams for their hard work and to all of the members who have supported as reserves and have given their time as Markers. Quesada Bowls Club is sponsored by Spanish Life Properties https://spanishlifepropertiessl.com/ San Luis Bowls Club Report 06.07.18. Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup
Country Bowls by Geoff Paylor & Gordon Dixon The ‘Badgers’ travelled to the ‘Hornets’ nest at La Siesta on Monday in search of valuable points after last week’s disappointment. Alas, with the team cut to the bone in terms of players for selection we got what we deserved and came away with our tails firmly between our legs. I don’t doubt for a moment that the team gave 100% effort but the ‘Hornets’ had just a little more quality and luck. Scores are as follows; Linda Freeman, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor. 26 – 8, Lynne Bryce, Peter Dix & Gary Ponsford. 20 – 18, Ben Nokes, Peter Robins & Andy Bryce. 17 – 17. 5 points for us with 9 to La Siesta. Shots Badgers 90 – Hornets 119 Many thanks to Dave Smith & Derek Jiggins for turning up at short notice. On Wednesday, Horadada were the latest team to play at Country Bowls in the VCL. Early on all games were evenly balanced except the pairs where Country Bowls gained an early substantial lead. In the singles Country Bowls gradually got on top and ran out worthy winners. The pairs were consistent and won rather easily and the trips had a titanic struggle but came up with a strong last end to triumph. The rinks were put under a lot of pressure by a very good Horadada team who dominated the later ends to come out on top. All in all a good win for Country Bowls 10 – 2 which lifts us from the bottom of the league, a very enjoyable and friendly mornings bowls played in the glorious sunshine. Scores are as follows; Ladies Singles. Trish Dix. 21 – 2, Gents Singles. Peter Dix. 21 – 2, Pairs. Brenda Jiggins & Geoff Paylor. 31- 2, Triples. Salma Hempstead, Derek Jiggins & Phil Warrington. 17 – 2, Rinks. Graham Richardson, Ben Noke, John Hassell & John Mallet. 10 – 0. Total Shots. 100 – 75 For information on Country Bowls please ring 966191552 or visit our website www.countrybowlsmurcia.com El Rancho Bowls Club. With the Buckskins having a bye in the Harrier league this week El Ranchos first match was against San Luis Hawks at home, it was a tough old match with El Rancho just taking the pairs and losing the trips by just the one shot. So not a bad day against a good opponent, the sun shone and the company was good. Ladies singles: Sheila Cox 14-21. Gents singles: Jim Gracie 11-21. Pairs: Jane Hamill and Richard Lee 20-12. Trips: Ron Edwards, Rob Clark and Shirley Edwards 17-18. Rinks: Diane Yates, Jean Bagwell, John Skipper and Stew Hamill 19-25. What a splendid day Thursday was, as most if not all will know, El Rancho hosted a fund raising match between a supplemented Ireland team and El Rancho. The purpose to offset  the cost of speech therapy for Andrew Latham, son of Wendy and Barry who are members of La Marina BC. Andrew had a massive brain haemorrhage in 2015 and was not expected to live, but survive he has, with most of his faculties. But alas the power of speech has not at this point returned, but it is hoped that expensive speech therapy will allow this to happen. The activities provided with hard work by many, to extricate money from our pockets, proved to be very successful and I know such monies were given happily. The bowls match as you would expect proved to be great fun with much jollity and was enjoyed by both teams and the great numbers who had turned out to watch, support and spend their funds, a great day only marred by the necessity of the occasion. So on to Friday were El Rancho played host to Quesada Tigers in their VCL fixture, many have had a lot of practice and fun of course, this week. El Rancho had a splendid day taking 4 of the 5 rinks and also the overall shots. Ladies singles: Diane Yates 21-13. Gents singles: David Whitworth 21-19. Pairs: Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris 18-16. Trips: June Whitworth, Rob Clark and John Skipper 16-21. Rinks: Ron Edwards, Jean Bagwell, Shirley Edwards and Jim Gracie 22-13. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at [email protected] or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at [email protected]. Greenlands Bowls Club by Dave Webb In the VCL League we were at home to La Marina and following recent form we were kept to just one winning rink and very close in another. So the final scores were - total shots for - 64. shots against - 101. Points for 2. points against - 10. Our only winning rink was the ladies singles, Mary Lockley. 21 shots to 15. The Trips lost out by only 2 shots but there is always next week to look forward to. Horadada Bowls Club   by   Barry Evans On the playing front as very bad week for the Club. Monday had us playing at home against a strong La Siesta team and we suffered from a bad case of Wasp stings! La Siesta won on four rinks and by 115 shots to105.Our winning rinks were Wayne Jackson, Ron Odell and Alan Miller 21 – 11 and Pat Patton, Margaret Odell and Brian Patton 23 – 11.Two of our other rinks only narrowly lost so it could have been a better result. [caption id="attachment_20629" align="aligncenter" width="2468"] Horadada BC at the Opening Ceremony[/caption] Many thanks to those replacement players who had to be drafted in at short notice. In the VCL we were away at Country Bowls. Here we only had one winner, our rink of Les Davis, Roy Thompson, Jeff Hier and Alan Miller won 22 -10.We lost overall by 75 shots to 100. We now have gap for the Nationals so let’s hope we can pick up on our winning ways when the leagues restart. Good luck to our Nationals entrants. There is a practice game arranged for Monday 21st, 09.30 for 10.00, so please try and make it. Horadada always welcomes new members and our roll-up days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for further details. Quesada Bowls Club with Dee Stephenson Its been a busy week with some good results. On Monday the Blenheims were hosted by San Miguel Christians. Some very close results on the rinks but the Blenheims dug in and came away with a very good result winning on 5 rinks with a draw on 1 rink. Overall points 13-1, shots 82-115. Quesada Lancaster’s were at home to San Luis Wellingtons who were on top form and achieved a resounding win of 14-0 and 155-74 shots. [caption id="attachment_20628" align="aligncenter" width="1640"] Quesada representatives at the Emerald Isle[/caption] On Wednesday there was a home draw between QBC Tigers and QBC Cheetahs. The game was played in competitive but good spirits but Lancasters had a very good win 10-2 and 116 - 55 shots. The Lions didn’t have the best of days at San Luis against the Falcons who are top of the league.  But well done Chris Brazier, Pearl Houghton and Graham Phillips winning against a team skipped by Russell Marks.  Fortunately The Lions have still retained our second place in the league. The Cheetahs played away on Friday against the San Luis Falcons. After a very tough match, there were some nail-biting results on some of the rinks. San Luis came through in the end to win 3 - 2 rinks but to show how close it was the shots were a draw at 74 -74, the Cheetahs best shots score for the season. Points were San Luis 7 and Cheetahs 5. San Miguel Bowls Club – week ending 11th May By Gail Willshire This week’s report starts on 4th May when our Marshalls had a great result at El Rancho in the VCL. The team came away with 6 points and only just missed out on the shot differrence, 85 shots to 86! The husband and wife partnership of Sheila and Brian Errington won the pairs 15:13, the triples team of Ann Young, Bob Graham and John Staden won 22:16 and the rinks team of Ian Hope, Ken Hope, Paul Hayward and Mick Rogers won 25:15. Continuing with the VCL matches, the Deputies played away against the Monte Mar Lords during the week and managed a creditable 8:4 victory with 84 shots to 68. The singles both won handsomely, Ann Allen 21:13 and Gary Raby 21:7 and the triples team of Jan Farmer, Jim Jarvie and Alan Campbell were also able to add signficantly to the shots, winning 21:11. Unfortunately the Sherriffs came across an in form team from Vistabella this week. The marauding Vikings came to San Miguel and managed to win on 3 of the 5 rinks taking the shots as well, 72 to 90. Noel Davis and Fred Willshire were able to get a win in the pairs 14:10, and Jan & Brian Allen and Lynn Greenland won the triples 21:17.  [caption id="attachment_20627" align="aligncenter" width="3456"] The San Miguel squad at the Nationals Opening Ceremony[/caption] The Monday leagues saw results at either end of the spectrum for the club. The Moors had a fantastic result against Greenlands Gladiators, winning across the board and taking the shots 134 to 78. Possibly the best result came from Margaret Patterson, Noel Davis and Mary Dyer. At the half way point they were 3:13 down but clawed their way back to win 16:15. At the same time the Christians were at home to Quesada Blenheims and, sadly, only managed to get 1 point thanks to a 13:13 draw from Pat McEwan, Ann Young and Dave McEwan. Not a good day at the office! Good luck to all those playing in the Nationals. I’ll update you all on progress next week. If you are thinking of taking up bowls, why not come to Wasps on Wednesdays 1pm for 1:30 start. €5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and woods available to borrow. Costa Blanca Sth Bowls Roundup - 28 Apr 2018
San Luis Bowls Club Report 27.04.18. After last week's wish for the Champion of Champions tournament; we did have reasonable weather (apart from the gusty winds again) for the weekend semi-finals and finals; but we certainly had excellent bowling. The whole week of the tournament had been great; watching fellow bowlers fight their way to the finals. Suzi Cooper unfortunately lost her ladies singles semi final to Mary Dyer (SM) who went on to win the final. Mal Hughes had a real "game of two halves" turnaround battle in the men's singles semi-final, to beat Jason Prokopowycz (Q). The final against Richard Lee (ER) was again so close but after a tight measure the title went to Richard. Our rinks team of: Colin Jackson, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks, having defeated San Miguel in the semi-final went on to beat Benitachell in the final.Unfortunately later in the, windy, afternoon Keith Jones and Russell Marks lost their men's pairs final to Brian Miller and Steve Cantley (SM). All the clubs should be really proud of their respective champions. After all the excitement it was back to "business as usual" on Monday morning. South Alicante Summer League: Monday 23rd April SL Wellingtons home v VB Greenways, had a reasonable result 8-6, 117shots-109. Winners: Kath Reid, Ann Holland, Ian Kenyon 35-4, Sheila Cammack, June & Keith Jones 25-20, Steve Simmons, Sabrina & Russell Marks 18-12. SL Hercules away at La Siesta, were stung by the LS Hornets, points 4-10, shots 86-109. Winners: Roger Inwards, Mary Fromson, Roy Cordell 18-17, Sally Cordell, Mags Haines, Les Bedford 17-13. Information: www.sanluisbowls.byethost7.com  or contact June Jones, Club Captain: 691 903 773. Sheila Cammack Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham Only one match to report on this week and that was another great win in the SABA league, this time away at Greenlands against their Gladiators. We had a warm welcome from Chris and his team, and although there was cut and thrust between the two teams, the level of friendliness and sportsmanship did not diminish.  In the early stages of the match, Greenlands were ahead on most of the rinks, but once we came to terms with the green we eased ourselves back into the match, and eventually won on four of the six rinks.  We also managed to win the overall shot score by 105 to 91, thus giving us an overall win by 10 points to 4.  This means that we have won our first two matches in the higher division, and are currently in second place in the league, however, there is a long way to go!! The winning trips were:   Jeff Hier, Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 17 – 15 David Miles, Linda Hier and Terry Hucknall 20 - 11; Yvonne Hurlock, Les Davies and Brian Eatough 26 - 9; Irene Graham, Jack Linehan and John Hurlock 19 - 14. Well done to all our players.  2 out of 2 is a great result.  Let’s keep the winning streak going. Also this week, Greenlands Bowls Club held a 3 day open event in which we had 1 mixed trips entry of Irene Graham, Linda Hier and Jeff Hier.  This event took the format of a round robin. Each team playing 3 matches each of 8 ends.  2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.  Horadada just managed to pick up 2 points on day 1.  Due to prolonged rain, the afternoon matches on day 2 were cancelled.  Day 3, I’m afraid, did not turn out much better for our trips.  We only managed 1 win out of 3.  However, at least we got to use our waterproofs.  Over the 3 days we gained only 4 points.  Again the friendliness and sportsmanship was felt throughout the tournament.  Thanks goes to Greenlands for hosting the event. The social side of our club had organised a crazy golf day on the Wednesday but unfortunately the rain put the damper on that!  The members who went along for the day thoroughly enjoyed the lunch in Galindo restaurant at La Pueblos with plenty of wine and beer to wash it down.  The crazy golf will be rescheduled for another date. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information. Greenlands Bowls Club With the C of C running for the last week there were no matches to report, on Saturday the Roll-up attracted plenty of new and established and bowlers. For the new members it was a chance to meet and make new friends and everyone enjoyed the mornings bowling and banter. Thanks again to Rudy and Jim for organising the roll-up. In the summer league the Gladiators were at home to Horadada Hawks, but after some close finishes we were unable to clip their wings so the final score was.........Total shots for - 91.  Shots against - 105.  Points for - 4 points against - 10.  Winning rinks ..........Dave Field, Rudy Wattley, Skip John Obrien. - 21 shots to 11.  and  Zoe Wilcock, Terry Powel, Skip Dave Webb. - 21 shots to 12. The Greenlands Open Mixed Trips competition ran into some very wet weather on the 2nd day which resulted in re-arrangement of the matches in order to complete the final on the allotted day. After some very entertaining bowling the Spoils went to Fred Wiltshire's team, so well done to them and commiserations to their opponents Drew Gerrard’s  team. Let’s hope we have better luck with the weather next year. Emerald Isle Bowls Club by Elwyn Morris The C of C took place and Emerald Isle where well represented in all events, we were unlucky in some of the events but  we did have a Semi Finalist, in A M Stevenson in the Ladies singles, but to all that took part well done  the club are proud of you all Monday the Victors played at home against  Quesada Blenheims and they had a fine 12-2 win  aggregate 106-83,winners were M Riley J Pooley J Mulloy 23-14, P Heaney M Odell C Lindgren 19-8, C Parsons M Whitelock M Stacey  18-12, D Jones C Warner J Rimmer 19-16, S Johnson M Veale G Odell 15-13. The Vulcans travelled to play San Miguel Moors and they slipped to a 2-12 aggregate 73-122 defeat winners were L Burns J Loughran A Burns 20-9 ELWYN MORRIS El Rancho Bowls Club. The Buckskins on Monday played El Rancho’s only match this week, playing host to Monte Mar Torro on a morning that started with only a slight breeze, which soon became the forecast strong and gusting wind, which caused more than a little consternation. The match provided some close run rinks, but in the end the Buckskins came through with 4 rinks to Torro’s 2 and also the overall shots. Dolly ford, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 24-12. Lesley Day, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 16-23. John Richards, Bob Day and Malc Elmore 11-14. David Wright, Graham Day and Keith Longshaw 25-16. Brian Yates, Tony Abbott and Jim Taylor 21-9. Janet Wright, Ann Abbott and Malc Sykes 16-14. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or  at [email protected] or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at [email protected].

Shots, VB 110 (8) – 98 (6) SM. well done to all the squad, they finished third in the league, at times it looked like they could have done better.
The Saxons were up at La Marina fighting to save their bacon, Just five points were needed to survive relegation and that’s exactly what they got, no more, no less…phew!

SOUTH ALICANTE SPITFIRE DIVISION (A) 2017 WK 10
LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Didn’t start the week off too well as La Marina TS lost to Quesada DS five nil. Dave Hadaway and Dave Taylor lost to Derek Sale and Terry Morgan and also losing were Peter Parsons and Tom Spencer.  Still another two games to play.
The last VCL game promised to be a cracker …and it was.  La Marina needed ten points to stay up and Vistabella Saxons wanted five points.  It was close throughout with the Singles finishing first as usual.  This week it was Jan Parsons being the Star winning 21- 7 while Pete lost by a similar score.  The Pairs was a close fought game all the way through with Margaret Finlayson and Tom Spencer winning all the way until the 17th end when they dropped a four only to pick up a three on the last end to get a draw.
The Triples was a little easier but a good game to play in as our opponents clawed their way back picking up six shots on the last six ends.  Thankfully, Barry and Wendy Latham and Carol Smith held on to win by three. The two Rinks each had great games.  Barry Sadler, Dave Taylor, Roger Stacey and Dave O’Sullivan also dropped a four on the 17th end but got the necessary two on the last to secure a win by one shot.
Our other rink again went very close everything coming down to the last wood on the last end.  Unfortunately on this occasion it went to the Visitors.  Counting it all up La Marina 90 shots and Vistabella 88 making the overall score 9 points to 5 in favour of La Marina.  Can’t ask for any more than that.  Well done to all who played in a great game for the last game of the season in the VCL.

We will have 1 in Div A, 1 in Div B and 2 in Div C and it is as much the latter where we welcome players – either those who have played in the leagues and want to continue, or those who are now ready to test the water and get involved and above all enjoy the game.
Your commitment to joining San Luis BC would be needed BY 1st August with membership commencing 1st September. However by joining in July there would be no charge for August when bowling at San Luis.

Wednesday 21st June VCLeague SL Falcons were away v San Miguel Sherriffs; a close match right to the very end (which could have gone the other way), but even with Jules killing the last end so we could replay it, we couldn’t quite close the shot gap; 94-99, points 5-9. SAN LUIS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS:
Whereas some clubs may be considering reducing their entries for the coming winter season, San Luis Bowls Club is going back to 4 for the South Alicante league on a Monday and 4 for the Southern league on a Friday.
Being a competitive club does not mean that there is not room for everyone in ALL divisions to get at least one game a week.
For further information please contact the Club Captain – June Jones 966 188 920 or 691 903 773.

LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB BY ROD EDGERTON
The third match of the Ladies 4 wood pairs took place against Quesada and our ladies carried on the good work from last week and came away with a 5-0 win. Ann-Marie Stevenson & Pat Harman playing at home won 22-19 whilst Sue Mahomet and Sue Jordan were away and came away with a 15-13 win. With just two matches to go in this competition La Siesta are in a good position. Go Girls!!! Keep up the good work.
In the VCL League away against Vistabella Saxons the team only managed one win with Alan Barton beating Ian Kenyon in a nailbiting match winning by a single shot 21-20. Unfortunately this was our only win on the day but congratulation to our rinks team of Irene Laverick,Jean Hepehi,Dave Laverick and Jonnie Ball who managed 5 shots on the final end to cut the deficit in their match to 19-13.The overall result was a win for Vistabella by 106 shots to 73.
In the SABA League the Hornets were away to local rivals San Luis Hercules and the usual close contest took place. After 9 ends San Luis lead on 4 of the 6 rinks but a battling performance by the Hornets took the match down to the wire. Matches on 3 rinks being settled on the final end. For the Hornets the win by Ron Sheldon, Sid Gallup and John Ball being the most exciting and improbable as they were 5 shots behind with 3 ends remaining.
Sid Gallup played excellent running bowls and skip John Ball held firm to turn a one shot deficit on the penultimate end to a win by 19-18 at the death. Liz Comstock, John and Dawn Taylor managed a 16-11 win but they only held a 1 shot lead after 17 ends. The star on the final end was Liz who bowled three exceptional lead deliveries to take the pressure off. The Hornets did not have it all their own way on the other close match where Robin Harker for San Luis bowled a great wood to beat the Hornets Triple by a single shot.
Other good results on the day for The Hornets was the trio of Penny and John Porter with John Lincoln winning by 19 shots to 13 and Jean James, Irene Laverick and John Clarke who won 24-15. The overall match result was a 10-4 win for La siesta by 109 shots to 92.
The Wasps were at home to Vistabella Greeners the best rink for the Wasps was the trio of Sue Mahomet, Jim Hudson (thank you for standing in at the last minute) and Brian Fraser(first league bowls game for 2 years, welcome back) 22 – 10.  Sheila Chorley,Vic Mahomet and Brian Harman won18-13 and our drawing rink Joy Gardiner,Irene Mangan and Sue Jordan 16-16. It was nip and tuck on 2 rinks , but overall a good performance. Shots for 110 against 106 points with the points shared 7 apiece.
LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
The hat trick was on and we did it by beating another of the top three sides, this time it was at home against Vistabella Vikings. More the pleasing as we are still at the bottom of the league. The score was 10-4. The Parsons couldn’t keep up their romance and only Peter managed a win but it was 21-7. Dave Hadaway and Tom Spencer had a good win 19-9 after playing 21 ends. Barry Sadler, David Taylor, Roger Stacey and  Dave O’Sullivan won a tight game by 18-16.
The most exciting ending was left for Captain Colin Armitage, Carol Smith and Lynne Armitage. Going into the last end one down, they picked up three to win by two. So it is left in our own hands to see if we can come last but one in the final game. Seats are going quickly so please book yours now !!!
Last game for the Pilots at home to Quesada Lancasters who unfortunately, from our point of view, bombed us out of sight.  We lost 10-4 leaving us, I think, in third place. A good enough season though so well bowled to everyone especially our two winning rinks this week. Those of Mike Smith, Peter Bailey and Gina Hindle and Dave Hadaway, Arthur Cronk and Dave O’Sullivan who won 26-7. If you want a free pint ask Dave how his better half got on.
GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB WITH DAVE WEBB
There was no VCL match this week as it was a bye, in the Levante Lawn Bowls Men’s pairs competition Dave Webb and Phil Lockley won a hard fought game against Derek Jiggins and John Rimmer at Country bowls. It all came down to the 18th end with Greenlands leading by 19 shots to 17, country bowls were in contention holding one with a measure for two, the measure favoured Greenlands ! just.
Final score 19 shots to Greenlands 18 shots against, so they will now proceed to the the semi-finals on the 8th September, In the South Alicante Hurricane Division, Gladiators were at home to Monte Mar Torreadors. Final scores were – Total shots for – 104.  Against – 95.  Points for – 8.  Against – 6.  Winning Rinks were — Jean Thompson, Jean Giddings, skip Dave Webb. – 33 shots to 6.  Sheila Stead, Mary Lockley, skip Jim Oliver. – 26 shots to 15. Vic Young, Dave Giddings, skip Dave Thompson. – 20 shots to 10. A very pleasant game was enjoyed by all and nice to finish our last match with a well deserved win.
If you are considering leaving your present club at the end of this season then why not come to Greenlands Bowls Club. You can be assured of a warm welcome by our friendly team members, and play on one of the best surfaces around, so why not find out more by ringing Haley on 966844399.

LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
To be honest I didn’t know the 4 wood Pairs League was going on but I am glad to say I believe we could be top at the moment after beating Vistabella  4 – 1. Tom Spencer and Peter Parsons had a good draw whereas the two Dave’s, Taylor and Hadaway won 19-14. Keep it going.
On to the VCL and there we languish at the bottom but watch out.  We went over to Quesada the Numero Uno and won 8-6. We could have had another two points as Quesada only had the overall score by two shots.  Shot of the match has to be Captain Colin on the last end when his team of Lynne Armitage and Martin Butler had dropped a four on end 17 only to pick up a five with Colin’s last wood to win 25-24.  Well done to the Parsons both playing the Singles,(not together), it seemed to carry on as in real live and be together as they both won 21-16.  Last but not least came Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith, Wendy Latham and Barry Latham who played an ex La Marina player and great friend, Fred Roberts.  In an intense game right until the last end we managed to win by just two shots.
The Pilots got well and truly blown away, away at the Vistabella Greeners green by 10 points to 4.  Our only two winners were Dave O’Sullivan, Arthur Cronk and Dave Hadaway 23-12 and Jean Tregoing, Peter Bailey and Mike Smith 14-11.  No doubt they will be fighting back next week.
I have to say it is nice think we are a caring club when you saw the Union Jack flying at half-mast on both days the tragedies happened in the UK. Thank you Alex Whyte
LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT BY ROD EDGERTON
Following the finish of the Spanish National Championships the league matches resumed with La Siesta playing two matches in the VCL League against Greenlands Jasmines and Emerald Isle. Wins for Pat Reilly and Irene Mangan in the singles produced wins backed up by a 28-12 victory for Jack Burrell, Trish Reilly, Pat Harman and Mike Edwards in the Rinks. However, losses in the Pairs, Triples and other rinks match saw an overall loss by 120 shots to 102 to the Jasmines with La Siesta picking up 6 points to their opponents 8. Unfortunately the result against Emerald Isle was not as good with a 127 shots to 71 loss with our opponents picking up a maximum 14 points.
A great result for the Wasps in the South Alicante Spitfire Division with a 107shots to 86 win away at San Luis getting 11 points to their opponents 3. Star place goes to Irene & Dave Laverick with Brian Harman who from the 6th end never looked back from, where they picked up six shots. Dave Davies with Florence & Mike lead from the start to win convincingly whilst Ramsey Sinclair, Irene Mangan and Alex Morrice picked up a 3 and then 6 to stay ahead for the whole of the game. Joy Gardiner with Bill and Sue Jordan managed to win with the last wood of the game. Sheila Chorley, Brian Gardiner & Jean Cooper came back from 7 – 11 down to gain a 17-17 draw. Jo Elkin, George Richardson and John Taylor were behind for most of the game and then came back steadily to be 11 all on the 16th end, only to lose the last 2 ends by 1 shot each.
Disappointment for the Hornets in the Harrier Division falling to a 10-4 home loss to Country Bowls Badgers by 120 shots to 84, picking up 4 points to their opponents 10. Wins for La Siesta came from Hilary Clarke, Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet by 22 shots to 16 whilst Ron Sheldon, Sue Mahomet and Rab Logan who were winning easily only to get stuck on unlucky 13 shots. However, having managed to get a shot to go 14-13 up they went on to win. The La Siesta Invitational Triples with sponsorship from Quesada Fish & Chips took place last weekend with semi-finals seeing two La Siesta Triples facing each other in one half of the draw whilst in the other half two Monte Mar teams met each other. The semi Final losers for La Siesta were Harold Charleton, Sue Mahomet and John Taylor beaten in a close match by Dave Davies with Mike and Florence Edwards. The final was an exciting match with Bill Young for Montemar pulling out a great win on the last end for him and his partners Jean and Don.(see picture of winners below)

We are still looking for new members to join us for the 2017/18 winter season. We are aiming to enter an extra team in the leagues this year. With 4 teams there should be plenty of games for everyone. We welcome all bowlers, from the most experienced to those who want to step up from purely “social” bowling to the league challenge. We are a competitive but friendly club and Casa Ventura itself is a hub for the local area, offering a wide range of non-bowling activities.

The Torros visit to Emerald Isle face the Vulcans produced a very competitive
match. The Torros won on three rinks and the Vulcans won on two rinks. The sixth rink was a draw. It was disappointing for the Torros to lose the shots by 102 to 101, so it was honours even with 7 points a piece. Congratulations to our winning and drawing rinks.

LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Here we go then last month of the Summer Leagues.  Everything to play for, the Pilots to win their league and in the VCL, La Marina not to get relegated.   Best of luck to both. We did alright in the VCL getting six points off a very strong San Luis Falcons side remembering they won the league last year. Three wins each but the Falcons got the overall shots for the extra two points.  Our winners were in the Ladies Singles with Janet Parsons winning 21-6, in the rinks Dave O’Sullivan, Garth Slater, Tom Spencer and Dave Hadaway had a 18-11 win and very excitingly Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith, Jean Perchard and Terry Perchard won on the very last end by three.
Looking at the score sheet it could have been so easily 12-2 to the Pilots as two of our rinks only lost by one shot.  Instead we beat Monte Mar Torre 8-6 away from home. So well done to all to keep us up towards the top. Jean Tregoing, Rob and Margaret Finlayson won21-16 with Garth Slater, Carol Smith and Dave Taylor getting two more points winning 21 -14.  While Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith and Tom Spencer came up trumps with a 17-14 win.
Usually at this time of the year folk are thinking about moving clubs or people are about to move out here for a better life in Spain.  If you are one of those people why not come and join us at La Marina, friendly, happy club with a good social life out of bowls.  Great for new bowlers as we provide coaching.   If you are interested give our Captain Steve Hindle a call on 966184360.

COSTA BLANCA BOWLS ROUNDUP
LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Last Friday we had an early St Georges Day Disco and meal at Paolo’s and very enjoyable it was. Well organised by our new Social Secretary, Jean Tregoing.   On Sunday we had a St Georges Day tournament with costumes which ended up with a late start because some people couldn’t get out of bed…. so rumour has it.  Again very enjoyable and thanks goes to Bill Jones for sorting it out.   The winners were Peter Parsons and Barbara Forshaw. Don’t know how much they won but Peter, Jan and Barbara went on holiday the next day.
Second were Mike Stone, Reg Jackson and Derek Smith. Third came Maureen Kidd, Wendy Latham and Jack Chorlton.  I won a prize with Frank Pollock and although it was the booby prize, I did explain to the members as President I couldn’t win everything so I came last.   Monday saw the frolics go and the serious stuff start again. The Pilots played at home against Vistabella Greeners. Last week the Pilots had a great win and this week they had a great loss.  Losing by only one shot overall. Three rinks won or lost by one shot.
Our winning rinks were Sue Daniels, John Rae and Jean Tregoing 19-11. Dave Taylor, Steve Hindle and Mo Taylor 19-14. Terry and Jean Perchard plus Lorita Rae 20-19.  The VCL league started again for us at home against a strong Quesada side proven by the score by 12-2 to them.  Derek Toozer the newly crowned Champion of Champions Singles Winner proved he was a worthy winner by coming back from well down to win his singles game. Our only success came with Len Daniels who did better than the Blues, Steve Hindle and Andy Bartlett.
The Pilots flew over to play Greenlands Gladiators and came away with a 9 – 5 win. Very good. Congratulations to Barry and Margaret Sadler plus Mike Surch also Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Reg Jackson. Not forgetting Sue Daniels (not to be outdone), John Rae and Dave O’Sullivan and gaining our extra point with a draw Terry and Jean Perchard and Lorita Rae.
SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB REPORT 28.04.17.
Champion of Champions Tournament. In the finals at Greenlands, on Saturday 22nd. Tom Hill & Sabrina Marks played the mixed pairs against Jason Prokopowycz and Carol Broomfield. As expected there were some very close ends but Jason and Carol came out winners. The Men’s singles final was between Russell Marks and Derek Toozer. Russell’s semi final was a great display of bowling but the final went to an even higher level. Every shot was closely contested by both men and just as it looked like the shot wood had been played the next one beat it. Russell played very well but Derek was simply outstanding and was a well deserved winner. It was a great game to watch and will be hard to match in the future. Our rinks team of Steve Simmons, Sabrina Marks, Keith Jones & Russell Marks won through to the final, on Monday morning. Unfortunately they lost to Geraldine & Gordon Fisher, Janet Gatwood & Roy Mercer. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to our players for reaching 3 finals.
Spitfire Division: SL Wellingtons Monday 24th – BYE.
Harrier Division: SL Hercules, Monday 24th home v Horadada Hawks, some tight games to get close on shots; 101-106, 4pts-10. Winners: Helen Hammond, Dave Tilley, Scott Malden 28-11, Roger Inwards, Danny McErlean, Harry Epsom 14-14, Doug Beattie, Chris Jackson, Fay Beattie 14-14. Tuesday 25th away v LS Hornets, again a very close fought match with shots 100-108, 4pts-10. Winners:  Helen Hammond, Chris Brooks, Scott Malden 31-13, Roger Inwards, Danny McErlean, Harry Epsom 13-12.
Wednesday 26th  VCL, SL Falcons home v VB Vikings; as expected a hard fought match, points 4-10, shots 87-110. Winners: 3’s Bill Webb, Neil Morrison, Derrick Cooper 17-15, 4’s Jan Pocock, Lynn Morris, Sue Cooper, Brian Pocock 14-13.
We are currently looking for new members to join us for the 2017/18 winter season. We are aiming to enter an extra team this year in the leagues. Dawn and John Taylor had a cracking game and won from start to finish 23 – 12 whilst Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards hung on for a well-deserved draw 17 – 17.Irene Laverick, Sue Jordan and Brian Gardiner had a close match and despite leading early on they eventually went down by 2 shots. Jo Elkin, George Richardson and Brian Fraser came back with a 4 and a 3 shots on the last 2 ends to lose by 3 shots.
The final result being a 11-3 points loss. Thank you to our friendly team of Joy Gardiner, Ramsey Sinclair and Alex Morrice. On Friday in heavy rain and with weather more akin to winter than Spring the Wasps visited Quesada to play the Blenheims. Due to the inclement weather the match was decided after each rink had completed 12 ends. Each team won on three of the six rink with the best trio for La Siesta were Joy Gardiner, Norman Adcroft and Sue Jordan who won 15-7, thanks to a score of 5 on the penultimate end.
Beryl Styring with Florence and Mike Edwards lead from the start to win 13-6 whilst Irene Laverick with Pat and Brian Harman picked up 4 shots on the 8th end to push home their advantage to win 14-9.The overall shots went to Quesada by 74 shots to 64 thereby taking the points 8-6.
Better news in the Harrier Division with the Hornets remaining unbeaten and still leading the league. Their latest victory being a 10-4 home win against San Luis Hercules by 108 shots to 100.
The winning rinks were Jo Kocsis, Sue Mahomet and Pat Reilly 24-9, Hilary Clarke, Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet 21-13, Wendy Ralph with Barbara and Jack Cooper 20-18 and finally Jean James, Alan Ralph and Jonnie Ryder 18-16.
In the VCL league our team entertained Emerald Isle Dukes and lost by a narrow 114 shots to 105 with the rinks shared. The points being 8-6 in the Dukes favour. The winners for La Siesta were Irene Mangan and Mike Edwards in their singles matches whilst our Triples of Joy and Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper secured a narrow 19-18 win.
Lastly some sad news to report. On Friday evening 21st April our friend and fellow bowler Roy Millward passed away in Torrevieja Hospital after a short illness.  Roy was a keen bowler playing in league and internal matches.  He will be sadly missed by our club and many colleagues at other clubs. Our thoughts go out to his wife Sheila & his family.  Rest in Peace Roy, you will be remembered always.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB
Our bowling week began with the Buckskins entertaining Country Bowls Badgers in the Harrier Division and put in a good effort, sharing the rinks and taking the overall shots against a strong opponent. On Wednesday our VCL fixture was at Horadada, playing well and taking both the singles. Several of the others were close, particularly the pairs, losing by the just the one shot after dropping a 7 early on and losing the overall shots by just 3. Ladies singles: Jane Hamill 21-10. Mens singles: Richard Lee 21-11. Pairs: Jim Gracie and David Whitworth 15-16. Trips: Pam Harris, Mick Ager and Merv Armstrong 9-24. Rinks: Ann Taylor, Malc Elmore, Jim Taylor and Stew Hamill 10-15. Rinks: June Whitworth, Bob Easthope, John Skipper and Carolyn Harris 15-18.
Friday found the Buckskins playing at Horadada, as in the VCL, the weather not being seasonal of course, with some rain and a stiff wind causing a little consternation. But they are a good bunch and we enjoyed the morning, again taking two rinks and again we saw good bowling from both sides and two rinks is always a fair result away from home. Marion Haynes, Dave Haynes and Merv Armstrong 16-15. Emma Walsh, Ann Taylor and Jim Taylor 10-26. Jan Bright Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 13-22. Gary Dunstone, Malc Sykes and David Whitworth 13-18. Bob Easthope, Malc Elmore and John Skipper 13-26. June Whitworth, Mick Ager and Carolyn Harris 18-15. We are about to begin the South Alicante Summer League season on 7th  but there is still the matter of the Winter League to complete, with 2 matches this week. The Berleen team of Margaret Morrison, Pam Lockett, Charlie Marigold, Barry Edwards had a great win 25-11. The second Winter League match of the week on Friday 31st was home against our near neighbours; La Siesta. LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Two Winter League matches this week and two different results especially for the two Barry’s. On Wednesday we travelled up the motorway to Finca Guila where some of us met old friends and some made new ones. We won by three rinks to two with Colin Armitage, Mike Stone, Mo Kidd and Lynn Armitage winning 17-14.  Then there were the Hadaways who both won. Shirley’s four were the winners by 28-14 and she was helped by Phil Pape, Alex Whyte and Ann Stone while the girls once again carried their Captain and leader Dave to the fine score of 25-8. So well done Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons. Now come the two Barry’s both claiming they won the extra two points on the last end to give us the overall shots and an 8-4 win.  Both rinks got “stuffed “ but Barry Sadler, Peter Parsons, Mike Smith and Margaret Sadler claim their three shots on the last end won it while Barry Latham, Terry Perchard, Wendy Latham and Carol Smith say that cutting down the three against to one on their last end was the winner. As I am writing this you might guess we did it.
So on to Friday when the League Leaders Vistabella came, we were hoping to do the same to them as we did to Quesada but it was not to be. They won on three rinks plus the overall shots but by only eight.  They won 8-4.  The shining lights were the two Barry’s and, of course, their fellow bowlers.   Barry Sadler, Peter Parsons, Margaret Sadler and Mo Taylor won 21-19 and the Scribe won 17-8 with help from Dave Taylor who had a great game plus Wendy Latham and Kathy Manning.    Another little argument was did the number of wrong biases mess our shot difference up. Unfortunately nobody wanted to tell me who the miscreants were.
Once again the Berleen lead by Alex Whyte with Jim Freeman, Angie Butler and Martin Butler had a fine 21-12 win.

LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Another good result although we lost 7-5 to Quesada who were top of the Winter League at the time. It was definitely a Hadaway day as both of them won. Shirley did by one with great help from Phil Pape, Carol Smith and Kathy Manning and Dave managed a super win with only 24 shots in 18 ends. So well done the other three……. of course as you might guess, it was his three girls, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons. Our other Scotsman hammered his way to a well earned draw so good bowling, John Mallet, Mike Smith, Mo Kidd and Mo Taylor. The Berleen didn’t fare too well this week. Let’s just say they lost.
SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB REPORT 24.03.17.
Just as the spring season starts, cool weather & winter woollies are back again! Wednesday 22nd Winter League away at San Miguel a real game of two halves. For a long time it seemed we might only win 2 points from Keith Jones’ rink. Winners: Ann Holland, Keith Phillips, Sabrina Marks, Mal Hughes 16-15, Irene Everett, Vic Slater, Neil Morrison, Peter McEneany 20-20, Lynne Morris, Jo Pering, June & Keith Jones 22-15, Shirley Verity, Ray Clarke, Jules Pering, Russell Marks 16-12. With 4 matches to go, this result has moved us into 1st place, just 1 point ahead of Quesada so we have to keep fighting right to the end! The Berleen team just missed out this week.

COSTA BLANCA BOWLS ROUNDUP – 10 MARCH 17
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB.
Monday found the Pintos travelling to Country Bowls to play the Flamingos on a glorious if very windy day, which proved to be a little tricky. But we had a good morning’s bowls and came away with 3 rinks and the overall shots by a margin of one.
Meanwhile the Broncos had a very good day at the office, playing at home against Emerald Isle Saturn. Battling against the strong wind and a good team they took the rinks 5-1 and the overall shots by a good margin, well done all. Edward Elsam, Ann C Taylor and Bob Taylor 20-9. Ria Dukker, Tricia Elsam and Richard Needham 11-15. Gill Bartlett, Bob Easthope and Rob Clark 27-10. Fred Dunstone, Gary Dunstone and Gary Newson 15-13. Ngaio Baldwin, Peter Baldwin and Graham Day 21-12. Marion Haynes, Diane Yates and Dave Haynes 21-1.
On Friday the Raiders were at San Luis playing the Pumas, who are always a tough opponent, but it’s only the company that matters. Alas the Raiders came away without a point, but that’s not important, as long as you enjoy the outing. Meanwhile the Mustangs were playing the Blues at La Siesta and put up a good valiant fight to take 3 rinks, but lost the overall shots, a good result to finish the league.
A mixed bag of performances, brought grins and groans, but we had a good time. June Whitworth, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 25-24. Bob Morgan, Jim Taylor and David Whitfield 10-24. Barbara Jones, Sheila Cooper and Jim Gracie 17-9. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Geoff Jones 13-28. Denise Morgan, Ann Abbott and John Skipper 10-17. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 22-13.
