Prompt #28: Blunt
FFxivWrite2023
Tumblr media
"You look more grumpy than usual..." Glancing to her twin, Shurenn could see the frustration in her sister's eyes. "You're mad at Jagodai again huh?" Seeing the small twitch of Dalain's tail, she knew she'd hit the nail on the head. "You know.. If you want to having a bonding ceremony that bad, you're going to have to just tell him... He's pretty dense, so you have to be clear, direct and blunt about it." Scowling Dalain did not respond for a moment, mostly because she knew her sister was absolutely correct, and because much like her mate, Dalain could be just as dense and she knew it.
"So what then? I just walk up to him and go, 'hey I know we've been together a bit, want to make it really official and have a bonding ceremony?' and just hope he says yes?" She huffed and stared at her sister, who sat with wide eyes. "What? At least say something?"
"You want a bonding ceremony? Sure..."
She froze as the voice of her partner cut through the quiet. It seemed the direct route, while not intentional, had yielded at least a positive result. "J-Jagodai... I didn't hear you... Approaching..." Immediately she became flustered and her tail would shift with agitation. The large Xaela simply stared down at his partner and her sister, seeming a bit confused as he did not register her tone as mocking towards her sister and simply took the words at face value. "So you want a ceremony right?" He paused waiting for a confirming answer. Ultimately Dalain could only nod. "Okay." With a shrug the warrior simply accepted it and motioned to Shurenn. "Go talk to Sadu and it can be arranged, just tell me when to show up." His direct nature was not unusual, but it seemed the shock of his easy agreeance had rendered Dalain mute.
"We'll get it sorted out." Shurenn cut in, the silence too awkward and uncomfortable to be allowed to continue. "Anyways... Shall we start prepping for dinner?" For the moment, it was best to change the subject, letting her poor sister recover and compose herself.
"Yeah, I'll go help the hunters." Jagodai flashed a grin and reached out to pat both girls on the head, then headed off without a concern in the world. Left on their own, Dalain seemed to visibly deflate and finally come out of her shock. "That really happened huh...?" She muttered, but all her sister could do was laugh a little and shake her head.
"Told you it was best to just be blunt with him."

Prompt #18: A Fish Out of Water
FFxivWrite2023
Tumblr media
"I have never felt so out of place..." Grumbling with an annoyed look plastered on her face, Dalain meandered through the crowd, trying to ignore the stares and looks. Xaela were not super rare in the streets of Ul'dah, but they weren't abundant either, more so as identacle twins. "It'll be fine... We only need one more thing..." Her sister, Shruenn, spoke in a softer reassuring tone. If it wasn't for the fact she'd cut her hair short, they would look identical.
Even so, the fact the pair seemed to share a face garnered more unpleasantly curious stares. "I hate Ul'dah... It's hot and gross." The heat of the day was clearly getting to Dalain, and she scowled, shooting a glare to anyone who happen to be to close or meet her gaze. "We're on the last task, then we can go home and make something to eat." Reaching out to take her sister's hand, Shurenn gave a gentle squeeze, and it seemed to ease the Xaela's fiery temper slightly, but the embers continued to burn.
"Why couldn't we have gone to Limsa? It's nice there and surrounded by water..." It seemed nothing would quell Dalain's frustrations and so her sister simply continued to lead her through until they reached the merchant in question. Staring at the woman's wares, Dalain didn't really understand what was so important that they had to come to the worst city state to get it. Shurenn however seemed fully aware and spoke with the merchant for a few minutes while her agitated sister simply stared out at the crowd, tucking her thick gator-like tail against her body so no one would bump it. People seemed oddly fascinated that not all Xaela had slender tails. She literally felt like a fish washed ashore, and completely out of her element. Dalain caught another's look and she glared back with a sharp intensity to those pale blue eyes, enough that it made the man turn away. Compared to the soft expression of her twin, Dalain looked mean and rather unfriendly. While she wasn't as aggressive as she outwardly seemed, it was more of a defence mechanism to keep people away. Afterall, if she didn't let them get close, they couldn't hurt her...
"Are you done yet?" She'd begun to fidget, the stressed agitation becoming more prevalent in her inability to sit still. "Almost..." Her twin spoke without even looking at her, so focused on her bartering. In response Dalain simply groaned and and folded her arms across her chest, tapping her fingers on the decorative band of her top. Finally after what seemed like forever, though just a minute or two had passed, Shurenn turned to face her sister with a smile. "All done! We can go home now." The anger had slipped from Dalain's face and in it's place was a smile. "Finally!" She chimed and took hold of her twin's free hand, pulling her through the crowd of shopping people as if parting the waters. In less the half the time it took to get to the merchant, they were out and away from the congested crowds.
"I feel like I need a bath after being there..." The Xaela complained, finally releasing her sibling's hand. "I don't know how you can be so calm here. It's terrible and hot and it smells... And there are -SO- many people..." No matter how many times the twins had visited here Dalain never felt comfortable. She always seemed to feel out of place and had formed a rather strong grudge against the city.
"Will you feel better if we stop in Limsa first?" The words silenced Dalain's complaining and she lit up. "Yes! Lets go for a swim!"
Being the near the water was just better to her. It's where she felt she belonged.
Where she had always belonged, like the Ejinn she was.

Prompt #8: Shed
FFxivWrite2023
Tumblr media
I didn't really want the responsibility of it, but I felt it was fate. My role in the tribe. I wasn't really suited to be matriarch to be honest. I've always had a temper, and I'm quick to resort to violence, but I suppose that is not that unusual to many of the Xaela tribes.
Still, losing it all made me regret not appreciating what I truly had at the time. In the end I had to discard what I knew, and focus purely on survival for myself and the remaining few of my tribe. Even with all my efforts, ultimately I was only able to protect my sisters, my tribe lost to the bloodstained water of the inlet we had called home.
Sometimes I regret it, and I look back on my life with sorrow, shedding tears for the souls that perished, those I could not save. Other times I recall the joy of my upbringing, my family and friends, my mate... I was so lucky to have been so loved.
In truth, I did not think I would ever find that again, so focused on the survival and adaptation of life in a new world far from the customs of home. We managed somehow, barely keeping our heads above water in a world that would do us no favors. It was a constant struggle against a powerful tide. Yet we kept going, and eventually things improved. We found our way, and while it wasn't always together, we knew that no matter what, or how far apart we got, in the end we could always come home to each other.
Now? Life is peaceful. While my sisters continued in the world I returned to the Steppes, finding my place among the Dotharl, with my mate. While I miss the life I had, my friends and family, I do not regret the path I've taken after. It has given me an appreciation for those moments shared with others, the memories made between friends and lovers, the high of combat and victory... I no longer shed tears for the past, but rather remember fondly their faces and the joy they brought in their existence.

~ Auraugust - 5. Colorful ~
Under the gentle waves, surrounded by colorful corals and fish, a Xaela finds herself at home. An Ejinn, a daughter of the sea, she is forever drawn to the depths. It is a place of comfort, of joy and of unbridled freedom. She is one with the waves, swimming beside sharks, diving for clams, and simply thriving in the beautiful blue abyss.

J = Jealousy - Dalain
Tumblr media
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
If one looked up Jealousy in the dictionary, there a chance her name would be listed somewhere with it. Now, as she's matured a bit Dalain has managed to reel in her temper and jealous nature a bit, though occasionally it does rear it's ugly head. Particularly when it comes to competitions and her possessiveness over her husband and his time. She is highly competitive by nature. Deep breathing exercises have helped, but there are a few occasions where she has challenged someone to a duel because she felt they were getting to flirty with her mate. Usually her go to is a test of combat, a Bokh challenge, though occasionally just throwing something at the individual or glaring at them in the hopes they spontaneously explode or something... Thankfully she's gained a fair bit of confidence over the past year or two and in turn it's helped quell the insecurities that led to her jealous nature in the past.

Thank you so much for the ask!

~Prompt #29: Fuse~
Tumblr media
“Do I have a bit of a temper? Perhaps...” Giving a shrug she glanced at her sister who was giving a very telling expression.  “Okay I have a fair bit of a temper...”  Correcting herself and giving a little huff, Dalain scowled at her twin sister before sitting beside her. “It’s not that bad...” Complaining quietly, the Xaela took a sip from her cup and sighed, glancing up at the starry sky.  Raising a brow and smirking at her sister, Shurenn merely chuckled at the other’s weak attempt to deny the fact that she had the shortest fuse out of everyone.  “Sometimes it’s pretty bad...  You threw a cup at Ymir yesterday...” “And he deserved it.”  Dalain cut in, attempting to defend herself as best she could. “You also made Kurumi and Sajin run extra laps because they made a joke about you.” Pointing out a second moment of losing their temper, within the last day, to her sister. “Also deserved.” Dalain was stubbornly refusing to see the point of her sister’s words. Rolling her eyes, Shurenn sipped at her drink and sighed.  “I think it would be healthy to maybe work on culling your temper sometimes...  I worry it’s going to get you in trouble... And since you’re getting married tomorrow...” Leaning over she rested her head on Dalain’s shoulder.  “It might help since you and him both have thick skulls and to much attitude.” Giggling a little she moved back, dodging an attempt from Dalain to swap at her. Despite the gesture, there was no force behind it, and the sisters exchanged smiles. “I suppose I should work on it a little... He’s as fiery as I am...  And probably twice as stubborn...”  Looking out towards the large bon fire burning, her gaze fell on her betrothed and a softness overcame the Xaela’s sharp features.  “I’ll try. I can’t promise it’ll change much but.. I’ll do my best.” “That’s really all you can do...  I know you love each other, but both of you are always so gung-ho to explode when angry and I don’t want anything stupid to happen.”  While Shurenn knew her sister and soon-to-be brother in law would never hurt each other, she worried for those around them that might get caught up in storm of tempers.   Taking the words to heart, Dalain simply lowered her gaze from the far group and back to her sister.  “I promise. I’ll do my best to be good and patient.” The words were met with a gentle smile, though not moments later a small ball was launched in their direction, landing in Shurenn’s lap and igniting Dalain’s temper in mere seconds. “WHO THREW THAT? I’ll end you!” She hollered out at the laughing Xaela nearby, who thankfully were all friends, though they quickly took off as she got to her feet, ball in hand, and gave chase after them. Sighing, Shurenn got to her feet, watching Dalain chase others and throw the ball, shouting empty threats at them while laughing.  “At least she’s less serious now...  Still creative with the insults though...” Adding a little huff of amusement, the young woman meandered over to the rest of the group to visit and avoid her sister’s revenge on their friends. “One step at a time sister...”

~Prompt #26: Break a Leg~
Tumblr media
“Well, I suppose it’s your turn soon.” The voice belonged to a tall Xaela, his pale eyes locked on the young woman beside him.  “You sure you can take them?” A playful smirk followed his words and Akul gave the woman a nudge.  In response she smirked and bumped him back with her hip.  “Just try and keep up.” A confident tone to match her expression.
Today was a great day for the tribe, it was a blue moon and thus, time for the youth of the sea-faring Ejinn tribe to prove themselves as warriors.  As was tradition, they would go out into the depths off a steep underwater cliff and hunt for the silver-tipped sharks that swam below.  During the blue moon, the silver edge of their fins would shimmer and aid the youth in locating their nocturnal quarry.  Ultimately the task was simple, Return with a shark and prove your worth.  If one succeeded they would use the shark to fashion their own personal spear, one that would remain with them until death.  It was a bond with the beast and the waters, something not taken lightly for the tribe. Despite the jesting between the two, they understood the serious nature of the event and the risks that lingered.  Every time the rite was held, there was the risk of never coming back to the surface.  While warriors lingered in the area to help if needed, they were not always fast enough to prevent an attack, and so the youth had spent the months leading up to it in intense training and preparation. Today more than most however, was vital, because among the youth was the eldest daughter of the tribe’s leader, Dalain who had just come of age to partake. While her sister watched from the shores, the Xaela woman composed herself.  Despite the daunting nature of the task, she couldn’t look afraid in front of the the tribe she would one day lead. Even more so as her future mate stood next to her.  While it had already been decided, Dalain still wanted to prove she was the best choice for him. “Shed some scales.” The term used was an odd form of wishing one luck among the tribe, thought there was a genuine risk of that tonight and so her words were met with a nervous smile from the normally stoic man.  Rarely had she seen him this tense before, but he was considered the best of the young warriors and so the bar was set rather high for the young man.  As the moon rose, reflecting a stunning blue in the water, the conch shells were lifted and their sound carried over the water.  Xaela dove, their dark bodies disappearing into the ocean’s grasp.  Dalain lingered for a moment, looking back at her family briefly, until it was her turn and along side Akul, she dove in. It was the most exhilarating and terrifying hour of her life, but by the end, it seemed Nhaama had blessed them.  While not all managed to get their sharks, no lives had been lost this time, merely a few close calls and some new scars.  Dalain herself suffered a bite to her shoulder, but had managed to get her training spear into the shark, forcing it’s jaws open to free herself and successfully dragging the animal to the surface and onto the sand.  Despite the worry from her sister and the blood streaming down her arm, Dalain was proud and stood with her spear raised, by her good arm, belting out a cheer for her brethren. Akul had been successful as well and after dragging the massive shark ashore, he joined her, picking the smaller Xaela up and hoisting her onto his shoulders.  The evening would be one of celebration and joy, then the morning one of solemn prayer and respect as they honored the sharks and began to task of creating their spears. The afternoon to follow would be quiet and upon the end of the day, each new warrior would present their spear to the tribe and they would earn their right to be adults and stand in the tribe as true sea-chosen warriors. For Dalain it meant so much more, as the completion of the rite for both her and Akul meant they could soon be wed.
It was a lucky day indeed.

~Prompt #3: Temper~
Tumblr media
“Now now my little shark... No need to pout, you lost fairly.”  The boisterous and enigmatic voice boomed over the conversations around them, followed by a hearty laugh.  “Ah, don’t give me that face.”  His words in response to the puffed cheeks and narrowed eyes of the smaller Xaela woman.  “Or should I change your nickname to pufferfish?” At this point it was a little extra salt in the wound... ~ ~ ~ She hated losing, and her competitive streak was highly aggressive, matched with a fiery temper and extensive stamina, it made the spear wielding warrior a challenging opponent.  Unfortunately, while she was a fairly good winner, due to such a temper, Dalain was not a graceful loser.  The woman had gotten used to being one of the best spearmen in the tribe, beating many who were stronger and more experienced than herself, and unfortunately it occasionally went to the little Xaela’s head. Today was one such day where she had been knocked down a peg, and losing was leading to quite the teasing from both her twin sister Shurenn and her bonded mate Jagodai.  Such playful harassment was often taken in stride, with just as many comments dealt to them in retort, however today had been especially bruising to her ego.  Another had bested her in combat, a young Dotharl, one whom she had beaten in training every single encounter. Unfortunately, overconfidence had made her lose focus, as she was to busy taunting and flaunting her skills.  It only took one misplaced step for him to finally catch her, and trip Dalain up, costing her the sparring match.  With the loss came her fury, with enough rage to raise the seas and drown the lands, condensed into one small lizard, it took the intervention of the much larger Xaela, Jagodai, to prevent a fist fight as she accused the other fighter of cheating.    Once separated and the onlookers dispersing, she stood there huffing and scowling with unfettered fury, practically trudging a circle in the dirt from her pacing.  “I know he cheated, he HAD to. I never lose to that unbalanced brat!!” Giggling near her, a striking duplicate with shorter hair, Shurenn watched her sister throw a temper tantrum to top most she’d seen.  In their twenty-three summers on the planet she had seen worse fits but this one was among the top ten.   “You know... It’s very unbecoming to lose your composure like that sister....” She offered in her sing-song voice, trying not to let the amusement show to much.  Upon approaching, Shurenn extended her slender hand, intent on taking her sister’s hands and calming her, but the motions came to a sudden halt as Jagodai strode over and placed his hands atop both their heads, grinning his stupid little grin at them both, and instantly she knew he was going to make things worse. “So, would this be a bad time to ask when dinner will be ready?”  His yellow eyes narrowed with devious amusement as the seconds ticked by, waiting for his angry little wife to fully erupt. Shurenn merely glared at him for poking the shark even more. “This is why you’re going to die young Jag....” Shurenn muttered at him. “Tch, Dotharl don’t fear death.” He gave them both another pat on the head, and Dalain shifted her gaze at him.  “I will drown you.” Her icy blue eyes narrowed, accompanied by a threatening scowl. “Perhaps... I would like to live a little longer.....” The Dotharl corrected himself and chuckled, kissing Dalain on the forehead. “I’m sorry love, I’ll stop. How about we get you a drink instead?”
