do you have any recommendations for books about tv? you always have such interesting things to say about tv, and I love reading about media, so was wondering whether you had any recommended reading
BOY DO I!!!!!
so there's bibliography on my iasip essay in my pinned post but it is LONG so here's some highlights (mostly sitcom-focused but not exclusively):
accessible/commercial/non-academic books:
sitcom: a history in 24 episodes by saul austerlitz
why we love sociopaths: a guide to late capitalist television by adam kotsko
television: a biography by david thomson
showrunners: the art of running a tv show by tara bennett (warning: this is Pro some very bad ppl but it is interesting)
tv heaven by jim sangster (this is literally just a huge list of the best/most notable uk/us shows of all time w a little mini review of all of them. i can spend hours flicking thru this book im obsessed w it)
sitcom style by diane friedman (this one isn't really like the others bc it's a photo book of studio sitcom sets w some annotations about why they look like that and i just think it's neat)
there's also all those show-specific essay collections which range from readable to dense (the iasip one and the community one are at opposite ends of this scale)
c/live ja/mes is a name that comes up a lot in this subject area for commercial writing but personally i do NOT recommend him, he's not actually that insightful he's just old and misogynistic lol
academic textbooks:
comic visions: television comedy and american culture by david marc (pretty accessible still imo)
queer tv: theories, histories, and politics by glyn davis and gary needham
because i tell a joke or two: comedy politics, and social difference by stephen wagg
cable guys: television and masculinities in the 21st century by amanda d. lotz
sitcom by brett mills
the unruly woman: gender and the genres of laughter by kathleen rowe
in terms of more general academic names that i don't have a specific book rec for, stuart hall is The Guy if you wanna talk about 'fiction affecting reality' and interpreting/analysing media and why representation is important, and then if you're interested in participatory audiences/fandom stuff that's a WHOLE other area but i find henry jenkins' stuff particularly interesting and relevant. there is of course also ms laura mulvey but she tends to be more film-focused, she's a p big name who gets referenced a lot tho so good baseline
anyway that's most the ones i can think of right now!!!! sorry if this is not what u wanted. i love u.

Huntress (gościnnie Jessica De Gouw), powróci do miasta. Oliver: Jesteś gotowy wrócić do gry?
Roy: Myślałem, że nigdy nie spytasz
Felicity: Według policji, gość, który przywiózł Helenę do miasta to 22-letni student politechniki SCU i członek Gamma Tau, co całkowicie tłumaczy to: “nie wiedziałem, że pomagam znanemu przestępcy”. Każda cycata znajdzie chłoptasia z bractwa do zrobienia wszystkiego.
Oliver: Ja też byłem w bractwie
Felicity: Mamy potwierdzenie

Broadway’s focus is on the Tonys – no new Broadway shows are opening this month – but Off-Broadway is bursting with new shows in June.
Carmen Jones at CSC
Skintight at Roundabout
Log Cabin at Playwrights Horizons
Great Leap at Atlantic
On A Clear Day at Irish Rep
Othello at Delacorte
Sugar in Our Wounds at MTC
Fruit Trilogy at Lortel
Woolf at Abrons
Cyprus Avenue at Public
Broders at NYTW
It’s not just all the familiar faces that lure. As the list below makes clear, it’s the  unfamiliar (and sometimes outright weird) that intrigue as well. Some (potential) highlights: Anika Noni Rose stars in CSC’s revival of Carmen Jones, one of a number of shows this month about the African-American experience.  Idina Menzel stars in Skintight, one of the strikingly diverse new plays with LGBT characters and/or themes this month. (June is Pride Month, after all.)  Melissa Errico is taking on another Golden Age musical for the Irish Rep. Eve Ensler has written three new plays, all on the same bill for Abingdon.
There are new works about white privilege, black oppression, slavery, immigration and genocide.  A play about class warfare was written by an eighteenth century German playwright, and has been adapted…in Russian.  The avant-garde company Elevator Repair Service is spoofing the absurdist Edward Albee.
This list is organized chronologically by opening date. Each title is linked to a relevant website. (Keep in mind that, with rare exception, the official opening date is not the same thing as the first performance. Opening means the night it’s reviewed — which these shows have not been yet.)
Color key: Off Broadway: Black/purple/blue.. Off Off Broadway: Green.
June 4
The Great Leap (Atlantic)
Written by Lauren Yee. Directed by Taibi Mgar. San Franciscan sidewalk basketball star Manford Lum, talks his way onto a college team as they travel to Beijing in the era after the Cultural Revolution, forcing him to juggle international politics and his own personal history.
June 6
Dan Cody’s Yacht (MTC at City Center)

Live: Billy Graham to be laid to rest after a final crusade

CHARLOTTE — The Protestant preacher known as “America’s pastor” will be remembered at a funeral Friday under a large white tent evoking his first “Canvas Cathedral” revival nearly 70 years ago.
The private service for the Rev. Billy Graham, who was 99 when he died at home in Montreat, North Carolina, last week, is expected to be attended by about 2,300 guests, including President Donald Trump and the first lady.
After the service at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, the globetrotting preacher and spiritual confidant to American presidents will be buried beside his wife, Ruth, at the foot of the cross-shaped brick walkway in the library’s Prayer Garden.
The noontime (11 a.m. CT) service, in many ways Graham’s final crusade, will be streamed live in the video player above or on FOX4’s Facebook page.
“It was Mr. Graham’s explicit intent that his funeral service reflect and reinforce the gospel message he preached for more than 60 years,” his spokesman, Mark DeMoss, said on the website of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
A tribute at the US Capitol
The 90-minute service in the library’s main parking lot comes after Trump and high-profile Washington leaders praised Graham this week at the US Capitol Rotunda. The influential minister became only the fourth person to lie in honor there.
Graham’s eldest son, Franklin, will deliver the funeral message Friday, according to the association website. Graham’s sister Jean Ford, his son Nelson and daughters Virginia Graham Tchividjian, Anne Graham Lotz, and Ruth Graham McIntyre will deliver family tributes. His pastor and close friend Donald Wilton, and David Bruce, his executive assistant for more than two decades, will speak at the burial.
A guiding light to generations of American evangelicals, Graham is said to have converted millions to Christianity. He evangelized to nearly 215 million people over six decades and prayed alongside US presidents from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.
US leaders who relied on the spiritual counsel of the man some called the “Protestant pope” included Lyndon B. Johnson, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Converting millions to Christianity
During his life, Graham reportedly persuaded more than 3 million people to commit their lives to Christianity. His preaching reached 185 of the world’s 195 countries, according to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
News of Graham’s death on February 21 elicited remembrances from Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, former Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush and many others.
Graham is credited with bringing the gospel message of tent-revival preachers into the modern media age by employing everything from telegrams to telephones to the internet in his lifelong quest to “win souls for Christ.”
Along the way, he avoided the types of public scandals that befell other prominent preachers.
His missionary work began in 1944 at rallies for the Youth for Christ Campus Life ministry. Within a few years, he held the first of his famous tent crusades in downtown Los Angeles, where 350,000 people heard him preach over eight weeks. Those who heeded his message of salvation under the “Canvas Cathedral” included a radio disc jockey, a small-time mobster and an Olympic athlete.
Graham founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 1950, launching a global ministry that even attracted followers from liberal Protestant congregations and Catholic parishes.
The preacher eventually took his crusades — a mix of hymns, preaching and patriotic fervor — to more than 80 countries, according to William Martin, a former historian at Rice University and the author of “A Prophet with Honor: The Billy Graham Story.”
His “last crusade” in June 2005 in Queens, New York, drew 230,000 people.
Graham also delivered his message via a weekly Sunday radio program called “The Hour of Decision” and wrote an advice column, “My Answer.” In 1956, he founded the magazine Christianity Today, a leading evangelical publication.
Born into a farming life
William Franklin Graham Jr. was born November 7, 1918. He was raised on a dairy farm near Charlotte. He said he made a personal commitment to God in 1934 after hearing an evangelist preach.
He graduated in 1940 from the Florida Bible Institute, now Trinity College. Graham was ordained that year by a Southern Baptist church in Florida.
Graham graduated in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Wheaton College in Illinois, where he met Ruth Bell, his future wife. She was the daughter of the Southern Presbyterian missionary and surgeon L. Nelson Bell.
The couple married in 1943 and later moved to Montreat. They had five children.
“I don’t think I could have ever married anybody that would have been more helpful to my work and ministry than she has been,” he told Larry King on CNN in 2005.
Ruth died in 2007 at the couple’s home in Montreat.
“Ruth was my life partner, and we were called by God as a team,” Graham said in her obituary. “No one else could have borne the load that she carried.”
The pulpit brought him great political influence. He urged Dwight Eisenhower to run for president in 1952 and served as an unofficial adviser to the former general after he was elected. He also became close friends with President Lyndon Johnson and preached at the former president’s funeral. President George W. Bush credits Graham for his transformation as a serious and committed evangelical.
But one political connection tarnished a largely scandal-free life. His association with President Richard Nixon led to embarrassment in March 2002. At the time, tapes of private conversations revealed the evangelist joining the President in making anti-Semitic remarks. Graham apologized.
While some critics have said Graham was not active enough during the civil rights movement, the preacher was credited with taking down ropes that separated blacks and whites during crusades in the early 1950s, according to historian Martin and Cliff Barrows, Graham’s longtime music and program director for the Evangelistic Association.
During a crusade at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1957, Graham asked the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to deliver a prayer.
After Friday’s service, Graham’s pine plywood casket — which was crafted by Louisiana prison inmates — will be lowered into the ground next to his wife’s grave. The couple had agreed to be buried side by side.

Trailer for local crime thriller Nommer 37 out
“With a title like Nommer 37 and set in a fictional Cape Flats area, you would think that this is a film about gangsters – it’s not. What it is, is an out-and-out crime thriller that tightens the screws of tension with every minute. It’s about everything that could go wrong for a couple when depression, curiosity, greed, fear and horrific bad decision-making collide,” says director and writer Nosipho Dumisa.
Entrapped in his apartment, Randal Hendricks (Irshaad Ally – Suidooster and Four Corners), a recent paraplegic, is given a gift of binoculars by his devoted girlfriend, Pam (Monique Rockman). But he is in financial debt to Emmie (Danny Ross), a sadistic loan shark, and when he witnesses a powerful criminal, named Lawyer (David Manuel), commit murder while observing his neighbours through his binoculars, he initiates a blackmail scheme in an attempt to settle his debt. With deception and greed around every corner, what follows is a thrilling ride that puts both their lives in mortal danger… as the world around Randal deteriorates further and further into chaos.

Nie jesteś w stanie go powstrzymać.

Tu chodzi o mnie. Okey, Sara potrafi przeprowadzić analizę krwi. Potrafi skopać tyłek. Potrafi wszystko. I ta jedna rzecz w której powinnam być dobra, to marnie zawiodłam. I dlaczego jeszcze mnie potrzebujesz, skoro masz ją.

Cytaty 🆒
Felicity: Zapłaciła pani sporą sumkę, doktorowi Gillowi. To on odebrał poród Theii. I to nie miało dla mnie sensu. Dlatego przebrnęłam przez dziesiątki teorii, aż sobie przypomniałam... Pani zeznanie, w czasie procesu. Romansowała pani z Malcolmem Merlynem, rok przed narodzeniem Thei. Merlyn jest jej ojcem?
Moira: Widzę, dlaczego Walter i Oliver tak wysoko oceniają twoje możliwości. A więc, co zamierzasz zrobić z tą informacją?
Felicity: Nie wiem.
Oliver: Felicity? Felicity, co się dzieje? I nie mów nic, proszę o prawdę
Felicity: Zwykle sporo mówię
Oliver: Zauważyłem
Felicity: Jednak nie o swojej rodzinie
Oliver: Zauważyłem
Felicity: Moja matka jest... moją matką. Nie wiem, gdzie jest ojciec - porzucił nas. Prawie go nie pamiętam, bolało gdy odszedł.
Moira: Masz, Oliverze... Kłamałam jedynie o Thei, by chronić ją przed Malcolmem.
Oliver: Nie, kłamałaś, bo to tylko robisz. I oto, czym jesteś, mamo.
