Rossville Historic District, roughly bounded by B, E, Main, and Amberly Dr., is a registered historic district in Hamilton, Ohio. The area takes its name from the old town of Rossville, which merged with Hamilton in 1854. Rossville was founded in 1804 as a separate city from Hamilton. It was named after Senator James Ross of Pittsburgh, a friend of George Washington and General Arthur St. Clair. Throughout the 19th century, Rossville was known for its inns, agricultural businesses, breweries, and industry. The town joined Hamilton in 1854, and served as a valuable refuge during the great flood of 1913.

The Rossville Historic Preservation Organization, founded in 1974, coordinates preservation activities in the neighborhood. One of their most popular events is the bi-annual Rossville Home and Garden Tour where visitors can stroll through many of the homes and lush gardens in the neighborhood. The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 6, 1975. It contains 123 contributing buildings. The neighborhood is located on the west side of the Great Miami River across from downtown Hamilton. Large mansions line South 'D' Street and other stately homes line Ross Avenue. Both sides of Main Street are lined with a variety of 19th century commercial buildings that once contained taverns, lively stables, hatters, meeting halls, drug stores, and grocers. The architecture of the Rossville and Main Street area provide excellent examples of all of the major styles of domestic and commercial buildings from the 1830's through the 1920's.

Ok it got long so I put my real thoughts beneath the cut. TLDR is I love it here, there’s a great balance between low cost as far as cities /major perks of a city, but I’m probably leaving to go back where my friends and the sun are.

Love the city and hate its weather. I’m looking to move in a few months because I struggle hard with living in one of the most overcast cities in the nation. But that aside it’s pretty phenomenal. I live in a very walkable area with good transit access and there’s a great balance between low cost of living (for a major metropolitan area) and an actually interesting dynamic place to be a young person. But your experience, like in any city, is going to vary widely based on your job, your social circles, and your neighborhood. A lot of people don’t mind the winters either, I just am very susceptible to changes in mood based on the weather. But I get by pretty okay with a SAD light. The other thing is that unless you live within a pretty contained triangular chunk in between the rivers you’ll be driving everywhere, and that driving will comprise of some of the most insane intersections, bridges, and tunnels ever. But I love the city and its character and fully expect it to be much more expensive and sought after in the next couple decades as the climate pushes people northeast. So get in on the ground level, get reservations at Apteka if you’re a vegan and drop into Chengdu Gourmet if you’re not. OH and our urban parks are incredible, you can legitimately HIKE in those bad boys. Hmmm what else… I’m too scared to go to gay bars w/o friends (all my friends live in other cities for various reasons) but I hear it’s an okay scene. But if you’re used to and seeking a nightlife comparable with other areas you might be disappointed. But tumblr tends not to attract those types. Other tips: shop regularly at the ethnic groceries in the strip district and keep a Steelers schedule on your fridge solely so that you know when being downtown is a no go. Primanti Brothers is overrated, you’re looking for quirked up restaurants like Vinnie’s Pizza, Asian food in Squirrel Hill, street food in the Strip, holes in the wall in Oakland, etc. It’s not a great city for Mexican food. OH the library system!!!!!!! Literally my home away from home. It’s unbelievable for a city of this size, thanks to Andrew Carnegie’s billionaire guilt philanthropy. And the Carnegie International art exhibition every four years is something you MUST mark on your calendar. Ok this is all insanely specific since you didn’t come to me saying “I’m moving to PGH gimme tips” so I’ll stop.

But I’d really advise you to have a solid plan for creating a community when you move to a new place. I think a lot of people are like “I’m going to move to X city!! Yay :-)” and then a year in they think they hate the city and they’re miserable when they just have no idea how to make adult friends, and they isolate themselves in an apartment far away from everyone they love. This city’s no different.

And I do eventually need to stop doxxing myself on here so I’ll stop posting about where I live whenever I move :-)

Bucky Porter: Working Hard to Live an Honest Life in His Hometown

This guy is like an old-school umpire. Calls ‘em as he sees ‘em, even if it hurts. He’s the friend who’s going to give you truth, but he’s also the man in the meeting who will call out the B.S. and tell his version of how it is with no one’s fragile feelings holding him back. Bucky Porter tells it like it is. Now, everyone who knows Bucky knows he sure can sing a pretty song even when he’s not performing on a stage, but there is no doubt he loves where he lives, wants to preserve his versions of what’s been best in Wheeling during his lifetime, and he’s not shy to tell ya when there’s an issue with something. He’s a contractor, a dad, a son, a fiancé, a realist, and a hard worker because that’s what is dad was … and still is, in fact. Bucky is your typical Wheeling man in his 50s. He’s just old enough to remember that once-upon-a-time thriving downtown, the Elby’s Big Boy, the Cooey Bentz Santa, rock concerts at the Civic Center, and the annual end-of-summer Park vs. Central football game, so, yeah, he’s qualified to know a thing or two. So, why not ask him? Bucky and his family reside in the North Wheeling neighborhood of the Friendly City. What neighborhood do you like better – South Wheeling or North Wheeling? I was born and raised in North Wheeling. It will always be home. I don’t mind South Wheeling though; there are good people who live there. However, I believe we have much better representation on City Council in North Wheeling than in South Wheeling. Also, I think we have a little more to offer in North Wheeling due to the proximity of Main Street, Interstate 70, and downtown. It definitely makes it a more accessible area. How do you feel about the direction of the city of Wheeling? I like the improvements I am seeing with the downtown area. We are replacing turn-of-the-century infrastructure with modern technology. Let’s not stop there, though. It would be nice to see a project similar to the stadium areas of downtown Pittsburgh and Pullman Square in Huntington, WV. We need revitalization spread to other areas of the city, as well. Plus, all of the folks campaigning for the rights of the homeless who do not live in the downtown neighborhoods need to come live in North, South, or East Wheeling and deal with these people on a day-to-day basis. It’s easy to campaign for them from afar, but what would they do when these street people harass THEIR daughters as they are trying to run on the jogging trail? Or steal from them or vandalize their property and vehicles? I’m all for rehabilitation and second chances, but I believe in survival of the fittest. The reality is that no one has ever handed most of us a school degree, a job, a house, a car, etc. We all had to work for what we have. The free handouts (although necessary at times) make it too easy for some of these people. Hopefully, we Gen X’er’s will be around to see the city grow to what it once was and see a safe city for our children and grandchildren. Porter and his long-time girlfriend Miranda Cordery became engaged in April 2023. Do you believe rock n’ roll will make a comeback someday? Why or why not? I don’t think rock n' roll will ever make a comeback. That’s not to say that music won’t progress (or continue to regress if you’ve heard some of today’s offerings. lol). I remember going out to see live music as a teenager in various clubs almost any night of the week, but those venues are gone and so are those bands. There’s not enough interest from the younger generation to learn an instrument, become accomplished, or make the effort to travel to play. It’s hard work. The music scene has shifted to bubble gum-ish Country and overly digital Rap because that’s mainly what people want to hear now. There’s nothing wrong with those choices, but they aren’t rock music. Not many folks out there play their own instruments and write their own quality songs of rock n’ roll genres anymore. Where in Wheeling is best to go if you want some silence in your life? There are many areas of Wheeling that offer silence and solitude, including sections of Oglebay and Wheeling Park. We have beautiful cemeteries here to walk through and think as well. My favorite place to go, however, is the river. Just sitting there in silence on a summer evening is relaxing and refreshing. Bucky and Miranda love to venture out to hear live music throughout the Wheeling area. To me, that means what you expend to the world with your energy is what will return to you. If you expend love, then that’s what you should receive in return.
