Local Poetry Reading part of the Worldwide World Poetry Day 2023 Celebrations.
Tumblr media
World Poetry Day, which takes place each year on March 21, was first declared by UNESCO during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard. Granada City of Literature in Spain leads the Cities of Literature World Poetry Day activity each year, and in 2023 their chosen theme is “Poetry for Life.” Granada’s celebrations commence with an opening ceremony at the City Hall central court, with the attendance of the City Mayor and other authorities from the cultural sphere where three poets will perform a poetry reading. This will be followed by 90 poets reading f in the gardens of the University of Granada Law School, 18 city bookstores and the long-running Poetry Slam Granada, in which 10 poets will compete to be judged the winner by public vote.
In all, a dozen of the 42 Cities of Literature are marking World Poetry Day with programs;
Dunedin, New Zealand: Dunedin has filmed performance poet David Eggleton, New Zealand Poet Laureate 2019-22, reading his iconic poem “What the future holds,” for sharing with our friends around the city, across the country and in other UNESCO Cities of Literature.
Durban, South Africa: Durban will celebrate with a short educational cartoon audio book compiled and written by Qap’s Mngadi and Artmatem Projects and Tradings Pty LTD that is based on true life issues that reflect peer pressure and teaches youth about the dangers of drugs.
Heidelberg, Germany: Heidelberg celebrates with a variety of events, embracing readings, poetry exhibitions and lectures organized by stakeholders such as the Heidelberg Forum for Arts, private initiatives and by writers from the city and the region.
Melbourne, Australia: Celebration includes an online video series with five poets from the cities of Heidelberg and Melbourne, to celebrate the culmination of a unique online writers room, Expedition Poetry.
Milan, Italy: Milan will hold several events between March 14-25 that feature poetry performances with poets and citizens, at Fondazione Mudima and at Triennale Milano.
Nanjing, China: Nanjing Literature Hall will receive a group of student visitors from special education institutes, Nanjing School for the Blind and Nanjing School for the Deaf for a shared poetry reading.
Nottingham, England: Nottingham Playhouse, Writing East Midlands and Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature join efforts for the project “Speak Easy for World Poetry Day,” a spoken world open mic night for young writers.
Seattle: Seattle City of Literature will celebrate by hosting bilingual readings in Spanish and English according to the theme “Poetry for life.”
Tartu, Estonia: Tartu will celebrate with a diverse program that involves different venues, age groups and audiences. The celebrations begin with poetry performances by children and youth at Tartu Literature House, including members of Tartu Poetry Theatre carrying out poetry happenings in cafés and restaurants.
Wonju, South Korea: Wonju will celebrate with written poems and promotion on the Wonju city-run Facebook. The participants will be citizens from Wonju. Each participating citizen will contribute a poem of their own creation which will be illustrated by Wonju City of Literature posted between March 17-21.

5 Reasons To Move To Otago!
Tumblr media
Mountains, rivers and lakes, stunning cities with unique atmospheres, globally top-ranked universities need we say more about the Otago region? Otago is one of the most beautiful and liveable regions in New Zealand, so there’s no wonder why you’re contemplating moving there. Today, we’ll set you on the right path and outline five top reasons to move to Otago.
Education
Otago is basically synonymous with ‘fantastic education’. The facilities in Otago are some of the world’s best for education: The University of Otago, in Dunedin, consistently ranks within the top 1% of universities in the world. Dunedin is known as a student town, with many kiwis and international students flocking to the beautiful city to get their degrees.
Family life
Family life in Otago is simply a dream. It’s perfect for all ages, from young ones to grandparents. Otago is a great place to raise children with many great primary and high schools, like Mount Aspiring School in Wanaka and King’s High School in Dunedin.
As you could imagine, Weekends are never dull – especially if you choose to live in Queenstown – the adventure capital of New Zealand – or close to it.
Jobs
Otago is a particularly great region to live in if you’re in education, tourism, technology, or any creative fields. Dunedin, for example, became a UNESCO Creative City of Literature in 2014, so if you’re an aspiring novelist, writer, or simply a book lover, your skills will be welcomed in Otago. Likewise, tourism is a huge part of the region. Adventure sports in Queenstown draws a massive amount of tourists each year, as do nature-based holidays in the region. And, as education is such an integral part of the region, teachers and university lecturers are always in high demand.
Housing prices
If the house prices on the North Island are getting to you, it’s time to check out Otago. While the median house price in Auckland is around $1.25mil in the Otago region, it is $721,000 – almost half that of Auckland. Moving to Otago is not only great for your family but great for your wallet too.
Nature
As humans, we crave being close to nature. Whether you’re a full-on outdoor adventure type who loves nothing more than camping, hiking, and water-skiing or have a more casual relationship with nature, Otago is the best place to get away from the hustle and bustle of a big city and appreciate the great outdoors.

Dunedin
Out of the three cities we went to (not including Queenstown because it was a fantasy land that belongs in a completely different category) Dunedin was my favorite. Everyone there was so relaxed and I had so much fun visiting The Octagon, which is basically an area with a bunch of bars, restaurants, and stores. At the center of it there was a giant statue of a man named Robert Burns. The statue was so grand and magnificent looking that I knew I had to learn more.
What I found out was that this same statue was also in 3 other cities. Alright, this dude must be pretty important. The one in New Zealand dates back to 1887. Dunedin was chosen for the fourth statue because of its Scottish roots. Robert Burns was a famous Scottish poet who followed a romantic style and often wrote lyrics and songs. He was admired for his work as well as his high-spirited character.
Many think it’s a bit odd that the most famous statue they have in Dunedin is of a man who has never actually set foot in the place. I get where they are coming from, however Robert Burns clearly had a big influence on the culture of Dunedin. He and the Scottish heritage is present in the architecture as well as the atmosphere in the city. His poetry was very popular to those in the city, and the impact of literature is huge especially in the time he lived, which we can see on the statue was from 1759 to 1796.

Back down to the Octagon in Dunedin, Robert Burns overlooks a series of plaques, set in the pavement, honouring New Zealand’s most notable writers. Dunedin was named a UNESCO City of Literature. It’s an inspiring walk. More are added as excellence is uncovered.

Otago's University: The Heart of Dunedin
New Zealand was still a fledging in terms of European settlement
when Otago University was founded in 1869. The University was pastoral land on the proviso it would offer degrees in Law, Medicine, the Arts and Music. In 1871, it boasted a staff of three professors, who between them lectured in Classics, English Literature, Mathematics and Philosophy. It wasn't until 1873 that Law was available to study and a further two years before Medicine was on offer. Medicine became the University's heart - my Step-Father, David Cordery, studied here at Med School in the late 1940's - as it was until recent decades, the only University in New Zealand to offer Medicine.
Otago University
is best known now (apart from the School of Medicine), for the School of Dentistry, which began in 1907 and the School of Physical Education which commenced classes in 1947 (a post-war phenomenon). In recent decades, the University has added numerous other courses of study, which has exppanded the campus area vastly. The campus, however, retains most of it's stunning old stone building as a heritage to years gone by and the many students who wandered the paved courtyards. Dissected by the Leith River, the campus covers a large area within central Dunedin city, making it an ideal campus for students, who tend to live within walking distance to the University. Otago University also has campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Southland with a total land ownership of over 22,280 hectares.
The University has over twenty thousand full-time students studying at various levels, which is why Dunedin is transformed during term time! These sudents (scarfies) add colour, vibrancy and energy to the city, which is noticably lacking once they leave for summer break. Whilst "scarfies' historically are well-known for their couch-burning and roof-top partying antics, policing of such activity has been stringent in Dunedin, and along with the advent of paying for study, students these days seem on the whole, to be here to study rather than party.
One of the stunning old stone buildings on the University campus.
