From the mid-19th century onwards, the economy developed thanks to fishing activities. 

In the first decades of the 20th century there was a sharp increase in the export of fish and nuts. The village then had five factories that employed 700 to 800 people, mainly fishermen's wives. However, from the 1930s to the 1950s, there were times of decadence, fishing traps were ruined, factories closed, boats disappeared and many houses were abandoned. The population was halved and fishing became a subsistence activity again. 

At the beginning of the 1960s , Albufeira was awakened to the tourist phenomenon , when it was sought after by international tourists, but it was mainly with the English that it prospered. Since then, the hotel industry in the city has developed considerably.

In the 1980s , there was a huge urban development, with the city growing to the east, where most of the administrative services were transferred, including the City Hall.

Beaches, Albufeira (No. 4)

Just a short walk from the Old Town, Fisherman’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) is one of Albufeira’s busiest and most historic beaches. It has excellent dining experiences, markets, live music and water sports. Fisherman’s Beach takes its name from the fishing boats that once launched and moored here. While many have moved to Albufeira Marina, some boats remain and provide a reminder of the city’s fishing heritage.

During the summer months, this small stretch of sand fills up with locals and tourists alike. Sit on the sand or rent umbrellas and sun loungers. The azure-colored sea invites you to take a refreshing dip and try water sports such as parasailing and water-sled rides. Walk to the edge of the breakwater to enjoy views of the Old Town and the rugged cliffs above the adjacent Inatel Beach.
