Evoke App Review: Can Do For You
AI-Powered Campaign Creation: Evoke boasts an AI engine that supposedly handles the heavy lifting. Users simply choose a campaign type (e.g., ClickBank, Solo Ads) and provide basic information like the affiliate link or website URL. The AI then allegedly crafts targeted campaigns designed to generate clicks.
Zero Technical Knowledge Required: Evoke positions itself as a beginner-friendly platform, eliminating the need for users to understand complex Facebook ad targeting options.
Multiple Campaign Types: The app reportedly offers various campaign options, including ClickBank promotions, Solo Ad integration, weight loss niche marketing, and Amazon product promotion.
Set-and-Forget Automation: Evoke promises complete automation after the initial setup. Once the campaign is launched, the AI supposedly takes over, optimizing and managing it for maximum results.
Transparent Performance Tracking: Users can supposedly monitor campaign performance through an in-app dashboard displaying metrics like impressions, clicks, and conversions.

Evoke App Review: My Recommendation
Evoke App offers a simplified entry point to Facebook advertising, particularly for complete beginners. However, its limitations in user control, transparency around the AI algorithms, and potential for inflated expectations make it a gamble. Consider your marketing goals and experience level. If you prioritize a hands-on approach and optimizing campaigns for long-term success, exploring established Facebook advertising strategies might be a more sustainable approach. On the other hand, if you’re a complete beginner seeking a trial run with Facebook ads, Evoke could be a starting point, but temper expectations and be prepared to learn more in-depth strategies for long-term success.

Samsung's Olympic Galaxy Note 8 isn't for sale, but I wish it was
In addition to the honor of representing their homelands, this year's Olympic athletes will also receive something else: a limited-edition Galaxy Note 8. Unlike Samsung's first Olympic phone, though, it's unlikely that this version will ever go on sale to the public. To own one, you have to be a world-class athlete or an Olympic staff member whose job is to support world-class athletes. To play with one, though, you just have to write things on the internet, so here we are.
To be quite honest, I'm bummed by Samsung's limited Olympic production run. Like the Pixel 2 XL before it, this Galaxy Note 8 blends an all-black face with a white back meant to evoke PyeongChang's snow and bitter cold. It looks, well, fantastic. The rest of the Galaxy Note 8s color options Samsung devised were pretty understated, but the bright white finish around back — complete with those Olympic rings — makes me wish Samsung did white phones more frequently. The S Pen is white too, which made it easier to spot among the rubble on the blasted wasteland that is my office desk.
Beyond those flourishes, this is functionally the same Galaxy Note 8 we reviewed (and mostly loved) last year. A special dark theme is enabled by default, making app icons look like Olympic-colored wireframes, and you'll find the official PyeongChang 2018 guide plus an app called PinQuest for collecting "exclusive" virtual pins around the chilly Olympic Village. (Apparently, collecting Olympic Pins is already a thing, but the allure of intangible pins seems pretty limited.) Strip all that stuff away and you're left with a very familiar foundation.
Actually, it's more familiar to some than others. I sort of doubt anyone at the Games would particularly care — at least for the next week or so, anyway — but they're getting the model with 64GB of internal storage and Samsung's Exynos 8895 chipset. While Samsung hasn't officially confirmed its update plans, this suggests that these special edition Notes might get their long-awaited Oreo builds before our Snapdragon 835 models.
Chris Velazco/Engadget
This all might sound a little frivolous, but these phones will do more at the Games than just promote the Samsung brand. In a recent release, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that the Notes "contain essential logistical and competition information for the athletes," which is why representatives from countries like North Korea and Iran will receive the phones despite not being able to take them home. Sadly, I couldn't fool the phone or any of its apps into thinking I was an up-and-coming curling prodigy, so there was no way to access any of that juicy information.
This limited-edition Note ultimately isn't much more than a clever marketing ploy, but it was still a little thrilling to handle a (very small) piece of Olympic history. The opening ceremony officially kicks off early tomorrow Eastern time, and I'll be half-heartedly checking to see how many competitors will be whipping out their Notes in the middle of it.

!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!!???!!!!!!!!!
okay now the actual words:
1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
[also answered here]
Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus. It still sneaks up and slaps me in the face sometimes. Though I hated the ending of the last book but let’s not go there
3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
I mean??? I love the Boueibu fandom, because I feel like I know everyone (even if I don’t know everyone) and it’s nice seeing other people’s fandom things and being like ah, yes, you’re the one who - . And then people recognize you’re own fandom things and you’re just like????? But the fandom also isn’t is-anyone-even-home small *cough* starmyu *cough*.
So yeah I really like the Boueibu fandom kudos to you.
(Also a shout out to the Haikyuu!! fandom for their love of rarepairs. Or maybe that’s just me and who I happen to follow, lol.)
8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?
What even is… my latest fandom??? The latest fandom I’m actually active in is Boueibu. I actually started watching Boueibu right after watching Hamatora because it was around the time everyone was comparing Kinshirou and Art, so that was like, half of what was making up the Hamatora tag. Then I watched the PV and went hiroshi kamiya and whoa look at that I’m on episode five already where did the time go? (Not even because I’m particularly fond of Hiroshi Kamiya (though I am), but because I’m always oddly proud of myself when I recognize voice actors? Idk why.) I got really into the actual fandom after reading some Enkin fics and also falling in love with the Student Council. The first fic I wrote for the fandom was actually for an exchange.
My latest fandom in general is Mystic Messenger. I’d been seeing stuff pop up for it for a while and then it showed up in my recommended apps on Google Play and I just?? What the hell, why not. Let’s do this. And here I am (though I’ve only finished Yoosung’s route so far ;;;; )
10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
Yes, very much yes. I’ve read fic for so many fandoms but have only gotten around to writing for 4 of them (5 if you include PJO but I haven’t written for it since I’ve been on AO3). The ones I can think of now are Daiya No A, Joker Game, All for the Game (book series), Kuroko no Basuke, Prince of Stride, Ao no Exorcist, Oofuri, Tsuritama…
16. Are their any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?
From Haikyuu, I’m not the biggest fan of KuroKen and Kenhina (is Kenhina popular? I don’t even know at this point). And… Asanoya, I guess? It’s not that I necessarily dislike these three as much as I’m just meh about them.
There aren’t any ships that I’ve come across that I actually dislike from Boueibu, and the ones I’m meh about aren’t really popular anyway? So.
And Rintori from Free!. Idk why it just never clicked with me??
18. What ship have you written the most about?
Tsukkikage (hq!!), apparently, though I mostly write about platonic relationships, it seems like.
22. Is there anything you regret writing?
[also answered here]
If I posted it, I don’t regret writing it. I might not necessarily like some of my old writing, but I don’t regret it. However, there are some things I’ve written down or typed out and immediately deleted because hell no this will not see the light of day not on my watch why did I even think to put those words together what was I -
27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?
[also answered here]
Coming up with titles. I love writing cute little (or heartbreaking) summaries, but titles? No thanks. It’s like I’m pulling words out of a jar, except the jar is locked, poisonous, and on fire. (Though I usually end up liking my titles, anyway.)
31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?
[also answered here]
Literally anytime?? Someone comments?? I get really jittery and excited because wow someone wanted to say something about what I wrote??
While the last ask has my favorite comment, I’m going to compile some of the nicest things people have said about my writing just because it makes me happy and I can:
“goddd your writing is so beautiful i’m so jealous” - nardaviel
“and your writing is amazing, it does a beautiful job of evoking the quiet that theyre both having to deal with. i think the present tense is part of the effect because it makes it seem less like a recounting of events (which by necessity is an act of communication, and this whole thing is about an inability to communicate) and more like we’re experiencing these things alongside atsushi. but i think there’s more going on than just the choice of tense.. maybe part of it has something to do with all the parentheticals at the ends of scenes…? they seem like quiet little asides, thoughts that don’t make it out into the main narrative the same way thoughts aren’t making it out of atsushi’s head 3 tbh i don’t really know, i’m just thinking aloud because i’m trying to learn from your talent a;ljsd” - @nardaviel
“Your style is so pretty as always, I loved the descriptions and how you portrayed the characters’ thoughts and perceptions of the world around.” - you, actually
“I know that I’m gonna read this many times over in the future…. I need a moment.” - Rudxinna
“Kudos to you for keeping everyone so nicely in character, for fleshing them out so well as they age, and for showing just enough of each scene.” - chromyrose
“I loved this. I cried and laughed while reading it.” - Pechat
“You really have a gift for zeroing on these quiet significant moments.” - odoridango
“How is everything you write so amazing and perfect??” - odoridango [Honestly everything odoridango has ever commented makes my heart soar]
[I am currently basking in happiness. Thank you for giving me the excuse.]
36. What’s your favourite genre to write?
[also answered here]
Slice of Life, assuming that counts. I love the atmosphere.
40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?
everything Plot, in general. Trying to connect everything into a coherent storyline. I find it easy with vignettes when you can get away with connecting them with subtleties or repeating lines, but having one event leading into the next without awkward breaks is a struggle. (Which is probably why I mostly stick with oneshots.) I also struggle with writing the beginning. I usually start in the middle of the fic, which will sometimes end up being the beginning anyway, orz.
44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

Just. All the platonic ships. All of them. I love platonic ships so much???? Give me all the friendship I will take it gladly.
From Boueibu, the third year OT4, as well as Kinatsuen and AkoIoRyuu (though I don’t actually ship the latter that much.) I feel like people really like them but there still isn’t that much content for them? though the only romantic ship i’ve really written is enatsu so i shouldn’t be talking
For Haikyuu!!, I’m especially fond of TsukkiKage and KuroKage, so. Also Yachi ships. They are adorable.
For Free!, I still miss reiharu, orz. I should write more for them. Other people should write more for them. More reiharu for the soul. Also Gou/Haru friendship??? It just occurred to me now but more Gou/Haru friendship would be amazing.
46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?
Hmmmm, I’d probably recommend an endless start of april, which is a KuniKage fic from hq summer hols. I really like the atmosphere, and how I formatted the fic. I also managed to stuff karasuno first year friendship in there. But mostly, I had a lot of fun writing it, and I think it shows. I’m overall really proud of it. (I’m also still really fond of fairy lights, lol).
48. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?
I try my best to leave reviews, especially when the fic made me really happy and/or really emotional. A comment can make my day, so I try to leave as many as possible. (Though I am guilty of not following through on this). I try my best to be detailed, but most of the time they end up just being really incoherent, orz.
50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
I think it started when I stumbled across a Lazel (PJO/HoO) fic over google search?? Then I read all the obligatory high school and harry potter AUs for PJO and then the tear jerkers and I was totally hooked?? And of course the first thing I wrote was for a rarepair, lol. After that I really wanted more platonic Jasico content, as well as a Nico-centric AU, so they were some of the first things I wrote about.
When I started really really wanting to write fanfiction, though, was after reading the fic Catch a Falling Star (free fandom come cry with me). It kinda became my fic writer’s dream to write a long one-shot like that (still kind of is, and is probably why I fell in love with long one-shots in the first place), and the imaginary friends concept has always stuck with me. That fic inspired me a lot, along with a few others. I’m still stumbling across fics where I go I want to write something like that, but that was definitely the start of it.
And here I am now, lol.
51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
[also answered here]
For the other “also answered” ones, I wrote something new(ish, in some cases), but I’m gonna copy paste this one bc I’m not sure what else I want to gush about:
I hate fanfiction’s reputation????? A lot???? Like I’ve seen/read my fair share of horrible fanfiction (have more than likely written some) and, yeah, some of it’s just pointless fluff or smut or the like but???? There’s also some really really really meaningful stuff out there??? And even those that don’t have some life-changing meaning mean a lot regardless - there are fanfics that have lifted my spirits and honest to goodness probably saved me, ones that have made me laugh so ridiculously hard I’ve woken someone up and ones that have made me cry at 3 AM wondering how something this beautiful graced my eyes??? Like???? It might not interest you but give it a chance, or at least keep any trash to yourself (unless it’s like, legitimate trash, but. That’s a very fine line you’re walking. A very fine line.)
And because I don’t want to end on a hateful note:
I love the little communities fanfiction builds???? Especially in smaller fandoms, or in rarepair fandoms (for lack of a better word). I love talking to other writers when I can and seeing how proud they are and getting little comments and I just?? Fanfiction communities are actually great.
And once more for good measure: !?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!!???!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!

25 Tips on How to Stay in Touch with Customers Through the Coronavirus Pandemic
Businesses around the country are struggling to respond to the effects of COVID-19. Whether your operation has closed or you’re just struggling to stay relevant in the time of social distancing, communicating with customers is key. But do you know how to stay in touch with customers?
How to Stay in Touch With Customers
In all likelihood, you may need to reach out to customers in multiple ways to really get important messages across. Here are 25 tips on how to stay in touch with customers you might consider.
Send Email Updates
Probably the easiest and most direct way for many companies to stay in touch is by email. Most small businesses already have an email list where they send newsletters or updates about sales or new products. This can be a valuable way to let customers know any changes your business is making right now due to COVID-19 or any specials or updates that may be relevant to them.
Send Text Messages
If you have a small client list and want to keep everyone up to date personally, a quick text is an easy and non-invasive way to share short bursts of information. You can either reach out to people individually or send a text blast if you have customers who have signed up for text updates.
Make Phone Calls
If your business has a few important clients that you really focus on, you may want to reach out to them personally by phone. Make sure they know about any changes to your business and answer questions they may have.
Start a Video Chat
Video chat is another option that’s perfect for businesses with clients they work with regularly. This is ideal for communicating with those who you may otherwise meet with face-to-face or in instances where you may need to share visuals.
Use Chat Apps
If you need to provide virtual customer support to your customers in real time, chat apps like Facebook and WhatsApp can be very valuable. You can easily share the link to your chat profile so people can reach out to you when they have questions. Or you can send out individual messages if you have relevant updates.
Host Livestreams
Another real time option for communicating with customers, hosting a livestream allows you to broadcast video messages and interact with viewers. You might host a Q&A session, simple announcement, or some kind of demonstration to help customers during this time.
Post on Social Media
There’s a good chance your company has at least one social media account that you update regularly. This is the perfect way to not only share updates with customers but also to engage with them. Find out what they want from you during this time and build community around this shared experience.
Send Direct Mail
For local businesses or those that communicate with customers mainly offline, direct mail is still an option. Design a small flyer or write a letter that shares what your customers need to know.
Send Notes with Online or Delivery Orders
If your business ships or delivers products, use that as an opportunity to communicate. Share a handwritten or personally typed note letting them know how much you appreciate their business and include any other details they may need to know.
Create Video Content
Video can be an incredibly powerful tool for sharing complex thoughts or evoking an emotional response. There are tons of different ways you can use this tactic. You might share an honest take about what’s going on with your company on YouTube or go a more lighthearted route by sharing humorous content on TikTok.
Post in Online Forums
If there are any online forums that are relevant to your industry, posting or responding to others’ posts can help you stay connected. Just make sure to be responsive and don’t just spam people with your own updates.
Comment on Online Posts
Social media, blogging, and forum posting are two-way streets. You don’t need to create your own posts to communicate with customers. If you see other posts online that may be relevant, leave a comment.
Update Neighborhood Groups
For hyper local businesses, you may be able to reach customers in your immediate area through apps or groups like Nextdoor or your local neighborhood association’s website. This may be helpful for businesses like local restaurants that are offering delivery just within a specific radius.
Publish Blog Posts
If your website has a blog section, a simple blog post here and there can go a long way toward keeping your customers updated. This gives you a space to share long form messages, in case your company has any information to share that doesn’t fit into a tweet or Facebook post.
Start a Podcast
For those who are interested in sharing audio content with customers, a podcast could be the perfect solution. If you don’t already have one, this period where you have extra downtime may be the ideal time to get started. Or you could join another podcast as a guest and then share that episode with your online followers.
Add Live Chat to Your Website
If your business needs to answer questions or provide support to customers right on your website, a live chat feature may be the perfect solution. You can communicate back and forth without forcing your customers to ever leave your site.
Update Your Google Listing
Google is often one of the first places people go when looking for information about businesses. By updating your Google My Business Listing, you’re communicating the information that may be most relevant to your customers.
Respond to Online Reviews
Businesses should respond to online reviews on platforms like Yelp and Google regularly anyway. But since many entrepreneurs now have more time on their hands, it’s the perfect time to catch up. Thank people for sharing their thoughts and encourage even more people to do so.
Add a New Section to Your Website
When people visit your website, they’re looking for up-to-date information about your company. If things like your hours, shipping times, or availability has changed, add a short section at the top of your site so people will clearly see those changes.
Host Virtual Events
For businesses that normally host in-person events, consider hosting an online event instead. You might make a Facebook group, start a mass Zoom call, or maybe even host a Twitter chat to get everyone talking and interacting.
Work with Online Influencers
If you want to cast a wide net and communicate with lots of potential customers in a particular industry or interest area, consider influencer marketing as a communication method. You can have people with a significant following broadcast a message to their network instead of just relying on your own contacts.
Host Webinars
Webinars are helpful for teaching new concepts or exploring complicated subjects. If you’d normally meet with groups of clients or host workshops, this is a perfect way to reach a large group of customers at once.
Offer Your Expertise to Other Outlets
If you have some insights that may be valuable to people during this time but don’t want to just rely on your own website or blog, share it with others. You can reach out to local press outlets or offer to guest blog for others in your industry.
Take Out Ads
If you have something really important to share, purchase ad space to make sure it gets seen. This can vary widely, from online ads on specific sites to ads in local print publications.
Provide Something of Value
Actions speak louder than words, especially during a time like this. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do to really stay top of mind with customers is to provide them with something they really need or want during this time. This will look different for every business, and may not be possible for some. But for example, a carryout restaurant might offer free delivery to medical workers and first responders. Or an online business that sells virtual courses could make certain content free so people can learn a new skill while they’re sheltering in place. It may not make financial sense in the short term, but people may remember the gesture later on when they can afford to buy additional products or services.

The styling is a bit confusing, but the X4's peppy 248-horsepower four-cylinder motor and crisp handling won me over.
The BMW X4 has a pretty firm ride, so it might be the best highway cruising choice.
One of the more perplexing vehicles I've tested at Business Insider is the BMW X6.
Back in 2015, I sampled the X6 M, a high-performance version of the vehicle, a "sport activity coupe."
"It's certainly the oddest segment in the motoring world, outside of 'shooting brakes' (two-door station wagons) and limos with hot tubs," I wrote.
That impression has long stayed with me, even as this weird segment has grown. It was the first thing I thought about when BMW was kind enough to loan me a X4 for a week. Would this smaller, less burly version of the X6 M, this fastback revamping of the stalwart X3 SUV, strike me as strange?
As it turned out, I had a good test lined up: a 250-mile round-trip run to my daughter's sleepaway camp in New York's Catskills. There would be highway driving and some nice twisty, windy roads to put this sportif SUV through its paces.
That's what these vehicles are all about. The idea is to combine crossover SUV versatility with sports-sedan styling and that whole "ultimate driving machine" vibe. I daresay, for the Bayerische Motoren Werke chariot to be all things to all people — but mainly something different from buyers who can't accept a sedan but don't want the stigma of an SUV.
A word on the "coupe" part of "Sport Activity Coupe." A coupé, of course, should have just two doors, not be a convertible, and historically not be a utility vehicle. Times change, obviously. You have to abandon your allegiances to traditional automotive nomenclature. Why? Because BMW says so.
This SAC, a 2019 X4 xDrive 30i, also arrived with all-wheel-drive, which again sort of bucks the whole coupé ideal, giving life to the notion that two-doors with sporting pretensions should be rear-wheel-drive machines.
But anyway, we must address the contraption before us, and so onward. Here's what I thought:
Behold! The 2019 BMW X4 xDrive 30i! The paint job was a handsome "Dark Graphite Metallic." Styling? A sort of oomphed-up sedan, with a sloping fastback.
The signature BMW kidney grille dominates the front fascia.
A closer look at those bold chrome blades, framing the legendary BMW badge.
Can you spot the Hofmeister Kink? I sure can, mainly because the slope of the fastback exaggerates the rear-end design of the X6.
I mean, let's be honest: it doesn't look to great from behind.
Here's the X3, the crossover SUV that's the basis for the X4 (both are made in South Carolina, by the way).
Read the snowbound review >>
And here's dangerous big brother, the X6 M.
Read the review >>
The X3/X4 are compact SUVs, sitting below the midsize X5.
xDrive equals all-wheel-drive! The 30i trim packs a turbocharged, 248-horsepower inline four-cylinder engine under the hood.
There's about 30 cubic feet of cargo area under the fastback hatch ...
... More than enough to handle a large suitcase and a laundry bag crammed with enough linen and sleeping bags and miscellany to get a teenager through two weeks of camp.
All BMW from the driver's point of view: the ultimate driving machine lives on on this purposeful cockpit. The steering wheel is heated, as are the front seats.
The center console provides a decent amount of storage and a pair of cupholders. BMW's wonky toggle shifter and the controls for the controversial but now much-improved iDrive infotainment system are also there, as is the selector for the X4's drive modes.
There's a large dual moonroof that let's in abundant sunshine!
And the rear seats, while not capacious ...
... Are adequately roomy. The "Tacora Red Vernasca Leather" interior, which comes with contrasting stitching, is lovely and expensive, a $1,700 extra.
Speaking of lovely, after some miserable summer weather in the Northeast, I had spectacular skies for my drive into the Catskills.
Our companion was BMW's iDrive infotainment system. It's been around for a while, an in the X4 is utilizes this fairly large central touchscreen.
The system isn't the easiest to use — all the sub-trees and decision forks seem to just what the average German engineer would order — but it get the jobs done and is reliable. GPS navigation was faultless, the audio system sounds quite good and offers USB/AUX inputs as well as an old-school CD player. There's also a small suite of apps, including a weather app that given the stormy, rainy nature of our Northeastern summer, I consulted often.
So what's the verdict?
To be honest, I was confused in the beginning by the X4, but I warmed up to it.
I should really favor the fastback ute over its SUV counterparts, but the oddness of the X4's shape takes a while to overcome. I like fastback sedans, after all. And there's no question that the X3/X5 family of crossovers is quite solid. There are good reasons why people love these vehicles, combining as they do SUV capability with BMW driving DNA.
What really won me over and vanquished some memories of the X6 M's warlike powerplant was the eager pep of the X4's four banger and the pop it could channel through its eight-speed automatic (there are paddle shifters and a manual mode if you want to go there). The 0-60 mph sprint passes in about six seconds, and I averaged an impressive 25 mpg.
The X4 30i leans toward the sporty side of the driving equation, but it isn't as bold as the M40i trim, which takes the ponies to 355 by swapping an inline four for a twin-turbo inline six. After a few days, I began to genuinely enjoy the X4's tossable nature, not something I often encounter in SUVs.
The major negative I encountered was the rather stuff seats, which when paired with the rather stiff ride no matter which mode I was in, and despite a lumbar support, evoked protests from my embattled and aging lower back after a few hours on the highway. The X4's cargo hold was up to the task of a road trip with gear, but the seats left something to be desired.
Mind you, when you chuck the X4 hard into a corner, you appreciate those seats and the crisp composure that the SAC's suspension and chassis delivery.
All this means this vehicle is really for suburbanites who would like to stand out from the crowd and who favor more driving in their ultimate driving machines that have been designed for tasks other than driving. I can accept that.
And after a week, I embraced it.

Ponzi Games Are Breaking Out on the Ethereum Blockchain
The hottest new apps on ethereum resemble an old favorite: the Ponzi scheme. At least that’s the early consensus on FOMO 3D and PoWH3D, two of the platform’s top three apps entering Tuesday.
According to data website DappRadar, both games have amassed 20,000 ether ($9 million) in trading volume over the last 24 hours, a figure that puts them on par with top decentralized exchanges and that exceeds the highest highs of CryptoKitties, the blockchain’s most famous viral decentralized application (dapp) to date.
Perhaps unique to both projects though is how they create an incentive to bring new people in so users can share the spoils as they do so. Both applications also collapse if new users quit joining in a way that’s similar to a basic pyramid scheme.
However, these particular games make it much more complicated (and maybe more fun).
“At the core, they seem to be taking the ideas of pay-per-bid auction models that were popular in 2009–2011, except instead of selling ‘real’ products for the bid price, they sell nothing tangible or of real value,” Sid Kalla, of token project consulting firm Turing Advisory Group, told CoinDesk.
In penny auctions, people paid a tiny amount of money to make a bid on a real item. The final winning bidder might get a deal, but the organization running the auction would make many times over the price of the item from the fees collected on the way to that bid.
At least then auctioneers took on some risk: the cost of the item and operational costs. With these games, there’s none (except perhaps indictments).
Both projects appear to be by the same group, which calls itself “TeamJUST.” The creators are keeping themselves anonymous. The two products have sparked a furor among crypto enthusiasts, who are warning buyers not to support what they allege are pyramid schemes.
JP Thor, CEO of CanYa, a startup funded with an initial coin offering (ICO), wrote on Twitter:
“One thing for certain, this thing won’t end well.”
But financial blogger JP Konig was more philosophical, writing on Twitter, “It is human nature to seek out gambling opportunities like Ponzis. Till now the only option has been shoddily-run offline Ponzis. If ethereum’s relatively clean Ponzis displace the bad ones, the world is (a bit) better off.”
As Konig points out, Ponzi schemes are nothing new on the blockchain. Dapp Radar founder Skirmantas Januskas pointed out PoWH 3D on March 31 with a Medium post. “Let’s be honest, this is a pyramid scheme. Every user is getting paid for the users that join later,” he wrote.
In an email to CoinDesk, one of the anonymous team members of TeamJUST wrote:
“There’s a lot of misconceptions. It’s a game of semantics. By some definitions, almost all of cryptocurrency itself, as well as Social Security, have certain properties of a Ponzi.”
But what seems to be developing now is a sense of traction around the projects. While PoWH 3D has been on the blockchain a while, it wasn’t till mid-July that it started to really rise on the dapp charts, perhaps helped in part by TeamJUST’s followup, Fomo3D.
And it may be that the games’ very sketchy nature was part of the charm. Both projects have sites that make light of their approach. In many ways, they strike a similar tone to July 2017’s Useless Ethereum Token, the ICO that measured buyer’s contributions in the number of big screen televisions its creator could purchase.
He raised about $80,000 or 310 ETH at the time, promising nothing.
PoWH 3D
As the rise of these newer games shows, though, that promise still seems to work.
The “PoWH” in PoWH 3D’s name stands for “proof of weak hands.”
Using a token called P3D and a custom decentralized exchange for users to buy it and sell it, the creators added some elaborate features to make a relatively simple and familiar idea more fun on a blockchain. Every time someone transacts, it levies a 10 percent fee. That fee is then distributed to everyone still holding the token.
So, people holding P3D get paid as people come in, and they get paid as people go out.
It also rewards users for creating affiliate links that draw people in, and rewards them for sticking around over time. It calls these functions ‘staking’ and ‘mining.’
As the site puts it: “Yes, our staking and mining systems are comedic jabs at cryptocurrency as a whole, they’re also immensely more fun, and reward in (ETH) instead of something that ‘may’ have value later.”
And its creators argue that you can’t call it a scheme if it’s upfront about how everything works:
“We recognize that a trustless smart-contract managing value in this way simply was not possible before this point in computing history. There’s no scheming here at all – it’s upfront, honest and completely transparent.”
Fomo3D
Fomo3D, which launched on July 8, is another TeamJUST game that recalls “The Button,” an experiment that ran on Reddit in 2015, which itself evoked penny auctions (without any money on the line).
In the Reddit game, a simple button was accompanied by a 60-second timer. When a user clicked the button, the timer would reset. If no one clicked it, the timer would run out and the game would end. It took two months and over 1 million clicks before someone let the timer run out.
Fomo3D works in a similar way, except pushing the metaphorical button costs a little money. There are now over 21,400 ether (nearly $10 million) on the line at the time of writing. Users of the game buy a “key,” and each purchase sets the countdown (currently at around 24 hours) back by a certain amount.
As the game’s wiki explains, “Players receive a stream of passive income from the game as keys are bought during the round. These rewards can be withdrawn anytime.”
To massively simplify how this very weird game ends, fundamentally: when the countdown runs out, the smart contract “drains,” or pays out. Winners depend on which “team” a person joins and — to make it weirder still  — part of the winnings can even go to holders PoWH 3D’s token.
In that way, it’s helping convince users in its first game to stay in. And it seems to be working: Fomo3D has far more transactions over the last day so far than its predecessor.
Fomo3D consciously evokes the seedier corners of the cryptocurrency industry. The username of the last player to buy a key is splashed across the site with the warning that they’re “exit scamming,” the practice of taking investors’ funds through an ICO and making off with the money rather than building whatever product was promised.
Scam or be scammed
Creativity and humor aside, most think the change in tone isn’t enough to brush aside concerns.
“I think it appeals to people as a way to gamble with some ‘exciting’ rules of the game,” Kalla said. “Given some of the time frames on which this operates, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this run for a while before losing steam.”
For some critics, the cheeky references to scams are a bit too on-the-nose. The most upvoted comment on one Reddit thread about FoMo3D – “my wife still doesn’t believe in mee” – is a reference to the most notorious (recent) crypto Ponzi scheme, BitConnect.
The joke may be on the players though. Péter Szilágyi, one of ethereum’s more well-known developers, took the time to detail an attack that could potentially undermine one of the schemes on Reddit this week. Which raises the question: if the stakes behind a game designed to rob its players gets stolen, did the thief really do anything wrong?
The answer may be one that the dapps’ users are soon to find out.
UPDATE (24, July 2018 14:08 UTC): CoinDesk added comment from TeamJUST subsequent to publication.

Jason Nwoga, Elliot Hadley & Lee Knight in COMING CLEAN. Credit Paul Nicholas Dyke
Relationships used to be so easy. Two people met, fell in love, moved in together and remained faithful to each other through the rest of their lives. Of course, this is utter balderdash and in reality, relationships can be quite complicated with monogamous, open, polyamorous to name but three. The important thing in maintaining a relationship is, so we are told, to be honest and communicate with each other. But, is it really? The subject is explored in Kevin Elyot’s play Coming Clean, a 35th-year-anniversary revival, as the headline of the Queer Season at the King’s Head Theatre.
It’s 1982 and in a flat in Kentish Town two friends are comparing their previous night. William (Elliot Hadley) is recounting his exploits after he left best friend Tony (Lee Knight) to go off with some ‘trade’ he had picked up in the disco they were both at. Although they are really close friends, there is some jealousy in William’s attitude to Tony. Not only is Tony in a committed relationship – coming up on 5 years now – with writer and lecturer Greg (Jason Nwoga), but the relationship is ‘open’. For those not in the know, this means, that Tony and Greg remain committed to each other but are able to have one-off hook ups with other guys whenever the fancy takes them. William seems happy to hang around all day chatting but Tony has things to do. His partner is away at a conference and Tony is waiting for his new cleaner to arrive and work his magic on the rather unkempt flat. When the doorbell rings, Tony goes to let the cleaner in and William has his breath taken away as the handsome Robert (Tom Lambert) arrives and lights up the room. Robert is a young ‘resting’ actor who does the cleaning, and a bit of cooking, on the side to make ends meet between acting jobs. The introduction of Robert into Tony and Greg’s house is welcome – since the place will finally be cleaned up – but ultimately will have a profound effect on the three of them.
Coming Clean is definitely a play of its time. For some of the younger audience members, the idea of going to a disco in the hope of meeting someone must seem totally alien in this day of social media and dating apps. The interesting thing is that although set in the 1980s parts of the story are still prevalent today. Meeting people and going off with them is still as fraught with danger as it was 35 years ago and relationships are just as complex. So, on the whole, I liked the story itself. My problem is – and I will probably find myself on the Gay Mafia hit-list – I don’t think Kevin Elyot was that great a writer of the spoken word. OK, I’ve only seen two of his plays, and neither was ‘My Night With Reg’ but I find his dialogue sometimes a bit heavy and taking a long time to not go very far. The strange thing was that the scenes between William and Tony were really well written and I could have listened to the two of them bantering on together for ages.
So having said that. This production is extremely good. It starts with Amanda Mascarenhas’ set which is meticulous in design and really evokes a home of the early 1980’s. This attention to detail extends to the costumes and I have to say Robert’s Walkman cassette player – an early iPod for the youngsters out there – was great to see. Coupled with the scenery, was the impressive sound which came from the right parts of the stage – the telephone rings and we all look towards the sound, the record player goes on and the sound comes from the speakers – many congratulations to Sound Designer Yvonne Gilbert there. These two elements all added to the realism and Director Adam Spreadbury-Maher made full use of them bringing the production together beautifully. In fact, as far as the direction goes, there were some amazingly superb touches that really impressed me. For example, without giving anything away, the shift from Scene 5 to Scene 6 brought a gasp of astonishment from me for two very different reasons – one of which was down to the directing.
Moving to the actors and the four strong cast were really good in their roles. On the journey home, my companion and I had a long discussion about the characters and the way they were portrayed. Of the four, my favourite was William and full credit to Elliot Hadley for making him outrageously camp, vulnerable and surprisingly strong at the same time. Lee Knight’s Tony was a much more complex character and, reading the playtext this morning, I’ve come up with all sorts of theories about his personality and the reasons behind his actions. Lee should be congratulated for making Tony such an enigma. Another enigma was Robert. Initially, Tom Lambert seemed to make Robert a young, shy person but, as the play went on, he seemed to change and grow and I was left wondering about him. I think part of the problem is that, over the roughly seven months of the play, Robert’s life changes in many ways and although the audience knows what has happened, they don’t know why, which I found slightly frustrating. However, Tom plays the part extremely well and with his looks and winning smile, is absolutely perfect for Robert. Finally, of the four, I found that I never really warmed to Greg. Jason Nwoga played the part well but I just didn’t like Greg from the start and had real trouble understanding how he and Tony stayed together which leads me back to the start of this paragraph.
All in all, I did enjoy Coming Clean – and really appreciate the multiple meaning of the title. While I had some issues with some the writing, the story is fascinating and the production is first-rate. As with many gay plays, the themes explored are easily translatable and, in this case, relevant to relationships across the orientation spectrum.
Review by Terry Eastham
The play is set in a flat in Kentish Town, north London, in 1982.  Struggling writer Tony and his partner of five years, Greg, seem to have the perfect relationship.  Committed and in love, they are both open to one-night stands as long as they don’t impinge on the relationship.  But Tony is starting to yearn for something deeper, something more like monogamy.  When he finds out that Greg has been having a full-blown affair with their cleaner, Robert, their differing attitudes towards love and commitment become clear.
Cast: Lee Knight as Tony, Elliot Hadley as William/Jurgen, Tom Lambert as Robert and Jason Nwoga as Greg.
