What I Watched This Week – 5/14-5/27
Tumblr media
School Rumble S1&2 - I've avoided this series for the longest time because I had it mixed up in my crumbling old brain with Rumbling Hearts, which looks like something I would hate. Instead of a bug-eyed visual novel adaptation, this is actually a fairly amusing shounen love comedy with a fun cast of over-the-top characters, which is totally in my wheelhouse. It's not really a romance, as all of the comedy depends on the characters always being thwarted in their efforts to snare the objects of their affections, but for the most part the laughs keep the lack of romantic progression from feeling frustrating. It does have the same problem Gintama had, though, in that it felt a little flat towards the end as it tried to wrap up the story threads somewhat seriously. I haven't bothered tracking down the final OVA, as I'm pretty sure it pairs up a number of the characters, and there's no way I could see the story doing that in a way that satisfied me. 7/10
Tumblr media
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card - This is a funny little series to try to talk about. I enjoyed it while I was watching it, as all the characters I loved in the original series are back and still loveable, and the visuals still look great, but after I finished watching it, it all felt a little unnecessary. Everything was pretty wrapped up at the end of the main series, and it didn't really need a sequel. Additionally, this series doesn't really do anything that the Clow Card and Sakura Card arcs didn't already do. In fact, a lot of this series straight up repeats the events at the beginning of the original series. So, it's a fun extension of the story for fans who want more adventures for their favorite characters, but it's not the sort of sequel that introduces any dramatic changes. 7/10
Tumblr media
SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist - I really wanted to enjoy this raunchy comedy about a world where dirty jokes, porn, and other "immoral" material is outlawed by the government, but two things held me back. First, there was a main character who was infatuated with the main boy and sexually assaults him, steals his underwear, and relentlessly sexually harasses him, and I found it dreadfully unfunny. Every time she was onscreen, she annoyed me. Second, queerness existed in the story only as a source of amusement. There was a BL doujinshi that was passed around the girls at the school for them to titter at, and there was a boy with a crush on the main boy whose penchant for wearing a bra and panties inspired anyone who saw it to throw up. It just fatally undercuts the story's message of resistance against conservative moralizing and repression when it takes up the conservative position that queerness is gross and weird itself. I will give it some credit, though, for giving viewers a recipe and instructions for making lube at home. 6/10

hEYYY GUYS I’M BACK IN SG my waking hours have been garbage tier for the past two days but i don’t think it’s jet lag?? probably exhaustion since i was busy throughout the two weeks and didn’t get much rest
i’m still in the middle of editing pics so pls enjoy some market aesthetics and a kinda long post about my last day in netherlands while it’s still fresh in my head
Tumblr media
25 / 5 / 2019
i woke up really early in the morning to finish packing bc the bus was picking us up at 10 am and my tired ass didn’t want to pack the night before
since there were around 9 hours to spare until my flight (at 9 pm lol), my friend and i planned to visit the albert cuyp market in amsterdam!! it’s the largest and most popular daily market in netherlands i think
ended up taking two other course mates along bc i guess they didn’t have anything else planned and waiting around in the airport for 9 hours+ wasn’t really the best idea
we were lucky that it didn’t rain even though the sky was particularly dark
Tumblr media
there was so much food!!! and a lot of souvenir shops but they didn’t sell anything particularly appealing and part of me wanted to save up in case i spot some stroopwafel magnets or something
i didn’t but honestly they should make some
had slight regrets of getting lunch at albert (it’s a supermarket btw) bc i was too full to try all the food at the market but...... maybe it was better for my wallet that way
in the end i settled for some delicious BATTERED FISH CHUNKS (3.65€) and PISTACHIO ICE-CREAM (1.50€) mmmm i was super deprived of fish during my entire trip so that was good!! and also i really wanted to have the ice-cream-in-a-cold-land experience
Tumblr media
my friend got FRIES WITH SATAY SAUCE from one of the stalls so i tried some!! the fries themselves were good but the satay sauce basically tasted like peanut butter which was...... weird in a not good way
then i realised that i don’t even eat satay with the sauce so idk how the sauce is supposed to taste like lol
we found a nice chocolate shop and they had really pretty-looking chocolate bars but!!! i’m afraid they’ll melt by the time i get back to sg so i didn’t buy any
i really wanted to get these for some ppl tho ahaha
Tumblr media
oh and there was a guy...... who looked like ash......... i couldn’t help but take a photo... yeah maximum creepy i know
Tumblr media
like all the touristy destinations there were more stroopwafel stalls and so i succumbed to my Tin Desires and bought another tin of stroopwafels
IT WAS CHEAPER AND HAD A NICER DESIGN THAN THE ONE I GOT AT THE WEDNESDAY MARKET!! i should’ve waited dammit
i can already hear my dad’s disapproving remarks bc i’m basically paying an extra 2 to 3 euros for a tin... that would eventually rust lmao
why do i need so many tins anyway?? nobody knows but i must have them
Tumblr media
this is gonna sound mildly disgusting but every time we were near a fruit stall my jacket would be covered in flies
there were two possible reasons for that: (1) my jacket is filthy from being worn too often and/or (2) the yellow colour makes me look like a mango or something
idk i’m inclined to believe it was the latter since my pants were spared and i’ve worn the same pants for almost two weeks
shout out to my friends who were constantly removing flies from my back where i could not see (☞゚ヮ゚)☞
the stalls were starting to pack up at around 4–5 pm so we took it as our cue to return to the airport
Tumblr media
had dinner at leon but ummm would not recommend their fish wrap bc they were so dry...... i feel like all (i.e. two) of our meals at the airport have been disappointing ://// especially at the price we’re paying for?? if you gotta eat at schiphol airport i’d probably suggest the burger king... sounds like the safest option imo
Tumblr media
(WHERE’S THE SAUCE)
after dinner there wasn’t much time left until our flight so we just did some last minute shopping at albert
some flight things:
the food on my return trip wasn’t as good... i think it was a really bad idea for them to give me beans ;; my stomach hurt so bad during the first few hours
HEY HEY HEY I SAW THE AIR STEWARDESS GIVE OUT ICE-CREAM BUT THEY DIDN’T GIVE ONE TO ME whYYY
and they didn’t serve me bread or drinks the whole trip... i mean i knew why but still......
watched cafe funiculi funicula on the plane and it was surprisingly good??? it’s got a death parade vibe... much feels wow if you do end up watching the movie you can guess which part/case turned on the waterworks hahah
later i picked johnny english reborn (i.e. the second season bc i watched the first one on my departing flight) to recover from the feels but i couldn’t finish the movie so no spoilers pls
plane landed in sg at around 4 pm on sunday!!
dad wanted me to get dom for my relatives aND I ALMOST BOUGHT A $200 DOM PERIGNON (bc that was the only ‘dom’ i know from watching that one gintama episode) WHEN HE WANTED A $50 D.O.M
the thing that saved his wallet was my inexperience bc i tried to purchase at the departure hall instead of the arrival hall so the salesperson stopped me hahah
Tumblr media
i also took the opportunity to visit the pokecen in hopes of finding a gengar but there wasn’t any
got myself a pyukumuku carabiner instead with the only S$10 that i brought with me overseas!! i remember wanting one a while back for some reason
Tumblr media
aaa it’s been a long two weeks but i will miss the netherlands
surprisingly i didn’t actually miss home that much even though it was my first time being away from home for so long??
not sure if it was bc i was too busy to think of home or a conscious decision i made so that i could appreciate the most of my trip
well apart from the fact that i was quite salty about how my phone kept acting up every time i tried to take photos and i didn’t bring my camera so i lost a lot of photo opportunities wehh
anyway pls stay tuned to my back logs~

Binge-Watching: Gintama, Episodes 262-265
It’s time to wrap up the second season! In which we get another Star Wars copyright nightmare, Shinpachi proves his worth, and Sadaharu brings it home.
You’re My Only Hope
And so, we reach the end of Gintama Season 2. It’s been one hell of a ride, full of laughter, tears, groans, cheers, and everything else under the sun. But as all good things are wont to do, it’s time to bid the series farewell for the briefest moment before immediately jumping into the third season (don’t worry, I’m not taking another two-week hiatus in between this time). In a lot of ways, these past 15 or so episodes have felt appropriately climactic; it’s been nothing but massive, emotional arcs stacked one on top of the other, giving pretty much every character in the show’s pantheon at least one moment to hog the spotlight all to themselves. And the Pinky Promise arc we just finished last time might as well have been the true season finale, blowing the skates and status quo into the goddamn stratosphere with the promise of sending these characters into an even more exhilarating world of adventure. For now, though, this final arc serves as an epilogue of sorts that sends the second season off in appropriately GIntama fashion: by completely ripping off Star Wars as the foundation for its own emotional rollercoaster.
At this point, it really is getting comical how much glee the show’s writers take in repurposing and mocking the iconography of the American blockbuster, to the point where our guest character is literally named “Obi-one” (His real name is Obe Hajime, and hajime is the Japanese word for first, so yeah. Well played, punmeisters.) I can’t help but wonder how these references go over in Japan; Star Wars is a big enough juggernaut that it’s undoubtedly part of the pop culture conversation all over the world, but there’s something kind of inherently amusing watching this show treat it with the same lack of reverence as it treats every obscure otaku cult classic it’s raked over the coals (I’m 90% certain that Kagura and Gintoki were farting as they stared nonplussed at Obi recounting his space adventures). Then again, this is still Gintama, and as has been made abundantly clear time and time again, there is no cheap potshot that it can’t somehow wrangle into something genuine and real. What starts as a lark at the expense of George Lucas evolves over the course of three episodes into an actual badass lightsaber duel, packed with emotional resonance and teeth-clenching drama. And it’s time for the main cast’s most underappreciated player to finally take the spotlight: Shinpachi’s glasses Shinpachi himself.
Brothers in Arms
It is entirely too easy to overlook Shinpachi. I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of it myself in the past. He’s the straight man, after all, meant to ground the absurd, but memorable, personalities of everyone else with his more straightforward, but familiar, perspective. Hell, this season’s first arc was centered around the idea of Shinpachi feeling undervalued as the token normal character in a cast of utter lunatics. But honestly, looking back at the full picture, Shinpachi is legitimately one of the most important characters in the entire bunch. That normality that everyone in the show endlessly mocks makes him the glue that ties everyone together; everyone can relate to Shinpachi on some level, and how overwhelmed he feels dealing with the outsized personalities of everyone around him. Lest we forget, it was Shinpachi’s desire to restore his family dojo that first drew GIntoki’s attention all the way back at this story’s very beginning. He literally started this whole damn show in the first place. So there’s a welcome sense of closure in how this season finale echoes back to that very first episode, finally returning the save-the-family-dojo plotline into the show’s canon (”Sorry to make you wait 260 episodes.” No worries, Otae.) We’ve come such a long way since Gintoki first lost his chocolate parfait in the restaurant where Shinpachi worked. And if there’s one thing this arc makes abundantly clear, it’s that Shinpachi may have come farther than anyone.
Shinpachi is a character defined by his insecurities. He always feels like there’s someone he has to measure up to, or someone he can’t hope to reach. Even his otaku obsessions point to this tendency of his; is there any more perfect expression of his sense of inadequacy than devoting his energy to an idol who can never love him in the same way he does her? But throughout the show, he’s confronted those fears time and time again, facing up to his failures and standing right alongside his new family every step of the way. Gintoki, Kagura, and all the rest inspire him to be the person he never thought he could be. So what happens when his former role model, the closest thing he had to a brother in the days when the dojo still hummed with life, comes back into his life after so long, only to be revealed as a sleeper agent planted by a hostile alien race into holding the earth for ransom? At last presented with the clearest symbolic possibility yet to break free from the chains of his past, but at the cost of losing someone both he and his sister care for dearly? Of course he chokes. Of course he can’t take that step. Even after all this time, he can’t see the strength he possesses. He can’t believe himself capable of that kind of courage.
It’s a good thing, then, that his new family can.
Smile for a New Day
Which brings me to the one issue I have with this arc: I feel like Gintoki’s motivation is blanketed behind too many levels of misdirection to be immediately grasped in the way this kind of intensely personal drama needs to be. When he first attacked Obi in the bathhouse, I was shocked. It was a level of cruelty and callousness we’ve never seen from him. And the horrified expressions on everyone’s face really drove home just how out-of-character this was for him. But I feel like a step was missed in detailing how Gintoki came to the conclusions he did. How did he know that Obi’s real self had been supplanted by an evil side the aliens planted in him? Why did he think this kind of ruthless attack would be the best way to try and drag the real Obi back into the driver’s seat? I get that he was trying to spare the Shimura family the pain of having to put him down themselves, taking on the bad guy role like the martyr-complex idiot he is, but how did he have access to all this information? It took me a good few minutes too many to really parse how we reached that point, and as a result I was playing catch-up with this arc’s emotional thrust for longer than I should have been.
But once I caught up to it... holy hell, was this a fantastic affirmation of how far they’ve all come. Once Shinpachi realizes how Gintoki was trying to spare him, he finally summons the strength to shake off his fear and face this specter of his past head-on. In a duel decided by a single strike, he faces down the boy he once was and the man he is becoming. And in a truly poignant moment, it’s him this time around who tells Gintoki to lean on his shoulders. Gintoki takes so much upon himself, goes so far to fight for everyone else’s sake. But this time, it’s okay for him to be weak. Shinpachi doesn’t need a perfect role-model big brother to shore up his insecurities anymore; he just needs a family he can share them with. And Gintoki recognizes that fact by actually giving Shinpachi his freaking sword, a symbol of their new connection, to finally put his past to rest. This is who they are now. Not broken, scared people floundering through life, but family. Family who can look out for each other, fight for each other, lean on each other, and push each other to be their best selves, no matter how hard it may be.
We are never perfect. We struggle, we fail, we try again, we fail again, and we get right back on our feet. Sometimes, we can’t help but cry in the face of everything standing before us. But we fight on regardless. Because the things just beyond our reach are always worth fighting for. And maybe, one day, we’ll be able to greet them with a smile. If that’s not Gintama crystalized into a single thought, I don’t know what is.
Sadaharu’s Closing Bell
And speaking of pure crystalized Gintama, it figures that for as meaningful as this arc ends up being, it’s the mostly inconsequential side story following it that truly stuck with me. How the hell have we not had a Sadaharu-centered vignette yet? Kagura’s had two emotionally devastating atom-bomb pockets of feeling already, you’d think a character who literally can’t talk would be a perfect candidate for that formula. Well, we’ve gotten there at last, and good god, it packs a wallop. For the first time, we get to see Sadaharu’s relationship to the Odd Jobs family in his own terms, how he processes them, how he reacts to them, and how they inform his own behavior without him even realizing. And for the first time, he himself gains a true appreciation of what they mean to him, as he’s unexpectedly forced into caring for a lost puppy much like he was back when he first showed up in episode 10. Since neither of them can talk, their bond develops entirely through their actions and facial expressions, letting it silently seep into our souls the way it seeps into theirs. And holy fuck, does it hurt when things take a turn for the worse. I half-thought we had been planar-shifted into Grave of the Fireflies, with how intensely Sadaharu was trying to keep this pup alive and how increasingly futile his efforts seemed. That one montage where Sadaharu grows increasingly exhausted trying to catch food for them all, only for the pup to grow increasingly weak and frail, until both of them don’t have the strength to lift another paw? Jesus. That was so fucking cruel, show. You better thank your lucky starts we still ended on a happy note, or I would’ve crawled through the screen and given you a taste of my fury.
But then again, that’s this show in a nutshell. it takes you places you never expected you could go, makes you feel things you were never prepared to feel, and leaves you in awe of the journey it’s been able to take you on. In a way, this was the only possible option for the end of the second season; sometimes, the biggest, most important moments can only be communicated by the smallest gestures. So thank you, Gintama. Thank you for still reminding me, after all this time, just how meaningful those gestures can be.
Odds and Ends
-”It’s because you watched the volume 2 DVDs and remembered!” Jesus wept, this show is merciless when it comes to flaws in its own continuity.
-”Thank you very hamnida!” Sure.
-”You just mastered the art of jamming it up his ass!” Truly, the most noble of sword schools.
-”This matter doesn’t exist on earth.” Shinpachi’s face askjdshdkjasd
-”Hey, this guy’s shooting idiot beams out of his head. Throw him in the slammer.” NOT THE TIME OKITA
-Yeah, you ain’t holding these tears back. Even if you can smile with them.
-”You know, with all these long arcs, we haven’t had a chance to take a break.” You know what, fair. You two deserve a vacation.
-”YOU SPENT HIS LIFE ON NUTS?!” his fucking face holy shit
-”Macademia nuts... are really good.” Guys, Kyubei’s the fucking best.
-”WHY ARE YOU GRILLING THEM?!” Shinpachi’s Glasses Don’t Fucking Deserve This(tm)
-”Who was that? Who called me Ridley Scott?” askdjhaskjds
-So the implication is that Katsura was present for the last big arc, but was such a prima donna that he never found a good time to make his entrance. Seems about right.
-STOP MAKING ME LOOK AT SAD KAGURA YOU ABSOLUTE MONSTERS
Goddamn, and that’s a wrap. See you later tonight for my season 2 reflection!

Binge-Watching: Gintama, Episodes 92-99
Why, yes, I did just tear through the rest of Gintoki’s fourth cours in a single sitting. What can I say, this show does things to me.
Fleshing Out the Sidelines
I’ll admit, I sometimes wonder doing this blog if I have a tendency to read into things that don’t exist. As fun as it is to break down and tear apart shows in detail, pulling on the various disparate threads to uncover what kind of tapestry it’s weaving, I’m always questioning if a particular thread I’ve picked up on is actually important, or just a red herring that I came across thanks to the particular mindset I approach anime with. At the very least, it definitely makes for a more active watching experience. The first episode in this bunch of GIntama is bookended by an extended meta joke at the expense of long-running shonen series that resort to padding and filler to keep from catching up to the manga, or to compensate for various production/budget issues they run into. As expected, it’s quite hilarious (”Well, this script was written in December.” “Yeah, don’t you know how long it takes to make an anime?”), but what’s interesting is that it also explicitly calls itself out for running up against those same constraints as part of the joke. And looking back at it after finishing out the fourth cours, I can’t help but think that this was intended as a kind of preemptive explanation or acknowledgement of some sort.
Because it definitely feels like this final third, while still strong and carrying the usual Gintama greatness, slips a bit into “filler mode”, for lack of a better term. There are no more massive emotional arcs or big, surprising upheavals, just a series of fairly disparate stories. And I know Gintama’s an episodic series by nature, but after the excellent pacing of the first two thirds of this cours, pulling out big, memorable moments pretty regularly, this last third does sort of feel like cruise control. And you know what? That’s totally fine. Gintama’s secure enough in itself as a story that it can afford to kick back and relax for a bit as to avoid burning itself out.
And for what it’s worth, we still get plenty of interesting little stories in the sidelines that flesh out the background characters a little more. Hasegawa gets a pretty cool arc about him reconnecting with his estranged wife and starting to pull himself out of the pit of obsolescence that is the Madao life. It’s got a strong conclusion and one of my new favorite Gintoki quotes ever (”I have no intention of bringing you a rope to hang yourself. But if it’s a rope to pull you out of hell, I’ll bring as many as you want.”), even if hanging the whole thing on a case of mistaken perversion feels a little lazy from a show that’s been so good at kicking those tired old tropes in the teeth (though Gintoki’s fantastic lawyer mode almost makes up for that). And we get a sort-of sequel to Catherine’s introduction all the way back in the first arc, reminding us that Otae has a heart underneath her crabby exterior and allowing the bizarre cat burglar some welcome depth as she pulls away from her dark past. There’s also that fascinating turtle assassin who uses his cowardice as his greatest weapon on the job, who I wouldn’t mind seeing more of, and that ridiculous Ultraman parody that puts the sturm and drang of super robots in the role of a beleagured middle-aged woman while still managing a powerful message about not neglecting to care for yourself. So yeah, if this is Gintama cruise control, I still have no problems being on this ride. Here’s to two years worth of episodes completed, and here’s to however many more to come!
Killer Endings
If there is one thing of interest to be gleaned from this stretch of episodes, it’s that Gintama is really becoming an expert at the killer ending punchline. In the past, it’s mostly allowed its various shenanigans to have fairly conventional endings, wrapping up loose ends and sending the characters of the week off with a smile. But here, it’s starting to step its game up and end its stories with punchlines that had me rolling on the floor. Umibozu’s space adventure is pretty much a perfect example of this (and hello again, Daddy Kagura! Man, this stretch of episodes is really bringing back a lot of good memories). For the entirely of its run, it’s literally just a straight-up space epic, abandoning any familiarity with the show at large to tell a straightforward sci-fi yarn with big space battles and heady philosophical concepts. And I’m not gonna lie, I was a little bored throughout it. None of the characters really had enough life or energy to make up for the lack of Odd Jobs. But then, right at the end, it’s revealed that the entire damn adventure was literally just a 30-minute commercial for hair serum that Umibozu was shilling. And I fucking lost it. It’s such an utterly brilliant subversion that it made the relatively underwhelming proceeding episode completely worth it. And the two-part games tournament, a glorious mockery of Nintendo’s cult status (Bentendo OwEe. Seriously.) and all things gaming, ended with a similarly unexpected burst of glory when Gintama takes off his VR gear to realize they’ve been accidentally beating up the spectators as they fought their way through the game... and then just casually puts the gear back on. Gintama’s got plenty of killer punchlines under its belt by now, and I’m glad it’s getting better at sending me off with its best.
I Fucking Love Kagura
And now, let’s talk about the single best part of these episodes. Gintoki is sick, so the Odd Jobs crew needs to operate without him for the time being. The concept of a Kagura/Shinpachi team up was exciting enough on its own. But then, the client of the week comes through the door, and who should we see but Kagura, dressed in GIntama’s signature kimono, greeting the client with a Tomokazu Sugita-worthy drawl: ”I’m Odd Gobs Gura-san.”
Readers, I think I might’ve lost it just a bit at that moment.
Seriously, you all know by now that Kagura’s my favorite character in this show, and I absolutely love her parent-child relationship with Gintoki. And now, we’re given an entire half-episode where she’s literally play-acting as her adopted father, taking on all his mannerisms and swagger. And it’s fucking incredible. I had the biggest, dumbest smile on my face for twelve straight minutes. She is so. fucking. CUTE. She’s got her dad’s tics nailed down to a science, and the level of detail she pours into her parody of him is stunning, right down the classic philosophical lecture to teach the client a lesson. And my god, her interacting with Sachan and being the sadistic prick she always wanted GIntoki to be (”Hey, nice pig rack.”) was every bit as absurdly genius as I had no right to hope it would be. At this point, there’s literally no chance of any character ever taking Kagura’s crown. I love her so fucking much, and I hope she keeps being this awesome.
Odds and Ends
-Kagura casually popping whole clementines into her mouth is big mood.
-”A NOSEBLEED?!” askjdhakjsdhasd
-I’m gonna miss this OP and ED. I think they might be my favorite ones yet.
-I’ll admit, Shinpachi in Greaser getup is not something I was expecting to see today.
-”You too.” She sounds so betrayed askdhakjsdhaksda
-Seriously, we fucking NEED an official GIntama high school AU at this point.
-The freaking line photography bit slew me. We’re officially at Evangelion levels of meta.
-”Objection! Please rewind and play that part again! The one with the spanking!” Somehow, some way, this damn show always makes the most uncomfortable shit hilarious.
-Nice discount Star Wars opening music.
-”I’m going to get my toupee.” Again with the lines that have no right being so badass.
-sdkjahsdhas Kagura literally just popped up through the cardboard box
-OH GOD I DID NOT NEED TO SEE THAT ALMOST NAKED GOLD STATUE OF PRINCE BAKA WHY
-”I can catch a flu anytime I want. Don’t underestimate me.” Kagura. Please. My heart can’t take it.
-Only when he’s sick goes Sachan have a change to cuddle up to Gintoki. Enjoy it while it lasts.
-”To look at the flower shop girl’s petals?” GIN-SAN WHY
-Best way to get ahead in a long line: offer delicious food to those in front. Gintoki is wise on many levels.
-THE EPIC CHINS HAVE RETURNED! HUZZAH!
-”It’s not Zura. It’s Katsuo!” I love everything about this.
-Let’s be real, I would totally play a dating sim this batshit insane. I mean, if Doki Doki Literature Club can exist, so can Swordfish Murder Plot.
-”You and I are different levels of blandness.” Um... burn?
-”This is why men are hopeless. What woman did you get that from?” aksjhdaks
-The Elder is the real hero of this game.
Four cours down, four to go before the end of the first season. Damn, it’s been a ride. See you next time as we cross both the halfway mark and the 100 episode mark at the same time!
