#OTD in Irish History | 4 March:
1704 – Penal law ‘to prevent the further growth of popery’ restricts landholding rights for Catholics; gavelkind is reimposed on Catholics (unless the eldest son converts to Protestantism, in which case he inherits the whole); a ‘sacramental test’ for public office is introduced, directed mainly at Ulster Presbyterians. 1771 – John Ponsonby resigns as Speaker of the Irish parliament for political…

Internet: there’s a new biography of Buckingham coming out in October 24
Me: sounds interesting - can’t be worst than The Kings Assassin, blimey that was terrible.
Internet: it’s by Lucy Hughes Hallett - she wrote that book about that fascist dude and on Cleopatra throughout history
Me: sounds interesting, I did like that Cleopatra book
Internet: it’s titled The Scapegoat
Me: so, maybe not a hatchet job? Feeling cautious excitement
Internet: here’s the blurb -
From the winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize, a stunning biography of one of the most flamboyant and enigmatic seventeenth-century Englishmen at the heart of political and royal life.
George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), was loved by three monarchs. King James I of England, whose bed-fellow he was, called him Steenie, after St Stephen whose face 'was as the face of an angel'. James's son, later King Charles I, equally enthralled by Buckingham's glamour, made him his best friend and mentor. Anne of Austria, the Queen of France, confessed that 'if an honest woman might love someone other than her husband' then Buckingham would have been her choice. Many believed that he was her lover. Buckingham was a dazzling figure. On horse-back, or cutting capers, he displayed a figure whose grace not even his worst enemies could refuse to acknowledge. He was also a skilful player of the political game, who rapidly transformed the influence his beauty gave him into immense wealth and power. When he travelled to Paris to fetch home Charles's bride, Queen Henrietta Maria, he wore a pearl-encrusted suit worth enough to pay and equip a sizable army. By the time he was thirty-three he had been first minister to two successive kings.
He lived in dangerous and complicated times, an era where witch hunts coexisted with Descartian rationality. Buckingham stood at its centre both culturally and politically. To the House of Commons Buckingham was 'the chief cause' of all the 'evils and mischiefs with which the country is afflicted'. When he was assassinated in 1628, at the age of thirty-six, King Charles said that he himself, and the monarchy he represented, had been 'wounded through the Duke's sides'.
All of Lucy Hughes-Hallett's books have explored the interface between actual events in the world of politics, war and international relations, and the operations of imagination and desire. Buckingham will, first and foremost, be a compelling story, but it is also story rich in significance, with deep resonance for today.
Me: aww crap 💩

For shopping, brands, or styles you're after, New York is a haven for fashion lovers. Showgoers gave their own spin to the latest fashions. Check out the top outfits of this year's shows and presentations. An outfit of wide-leg, cropped pants and a shirt that has a striped pattern can be equally effective. This is a stylish look you can wear over and over and. The secret to making it work is to choose the right colors and textures, and to add a funky twist with a few strategically placed accessories. Although Amy (Grace Phipps) and Paul (Hi Kong Lee) are somewhat overbearing They are nevertheless believable as her most trusted friends. AN: Ah well I’m a little late, and this is probably the only one I’ll do knowing me, but anyway x
Sure I’m using Grace instead of Daithi since she makes my life a bit easier, I’ll make Daithi content soon x
Ship: J.ames  “J.immy”  L.anik / Grace MacLochlainn
TW!!!!: Mentions of death/murder (In the song like), possibly triggering historical events, heavy (Hindu and Catholic) religious themes,  that’s it x
P.RO/C.OMSHIP DNI, GNASHING OF TEETH.../NEG!!!
=========
Prompt: Simple, but sweet.
“Will you not dance with me?”  Grace requested, taking her husband’s arm like she was Radha in the Rasa-Leela, taking James in such an embrace it was akin to God Themselves.
Ironic for a man with a Biblical name, no?
“Honey,” James began, taking Grace’s form in his arms, “I’ll always dance with you, mh?”
“I love you, Jim.”
“Love you too, Grace.”
They were silent for a moment as they began to dance, the DJ quickly getting the notification to play the song Grace had requested to play when she danced with James.
“As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol”
As the aul Rebel song went on, the story of a man soon to be killed, and his ever loving wife, that story lingering with the two.
The story of that Irish prison,  and the husband's punishment, not to mention his wife’s grief.
The song continued as the two danced.
“Yet, all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me”
It was hard to see beyond their own personal struggles, but together it was like the Allies..but given the song's nature they were more akin to the ICA.
“Oh, Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger”
She, Grace, had had the song played at their wedding, she knew the significance, and Fuck, it ment the world to her.
Plunkett and Giffords story was one for the ages.
The song had continued for a good while, but the lyrics meant everything to Grace.
“Now, as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking, too
On this May morn', as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you”
Grace, herself named after that famous Irishwoman, a sweetheart in history, a beloved person - Grace was named after a historical figure just in the same vein as her James was named after one of the Christian Saints of the same calling.
As Lord Krisna took the Gopis of Vrindavan, not to mention His beloved Radharani, James took Grace in his arms and gently guided her along the divine dance they were performing.
How Holy was She?
The Divine Couple.

The iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, the award-winning structure is also known as the ‘Blinking Eye Bridge’ or the ‘Winking Eye Bridge’ due to its shape and tilting method. the bridge takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the River Tyne, including the Tyne Bridge and Robert Stephenson’s High-Level Bridge. It contains enough steel to make 64 double-decker buses and each opening and closing takes four and a half minutes.
If you are travelling on a pleasure boat up the River Tyne, you will pass under the bridge. On daily basis, those watching from the banks of the river join the thousands who enjoy the sight of the Millennium Bridge tilting on its axis. The bridge not only serves a functional purpose as the River Tyne’s only foot and cycle bridge, but its grace and engineering also attract people from all over the world.

She Loves Me, the enchanting musical currently gracing the stage at 42nd St. Moon from June 8 to June 25, is a true gem of theatrical craftsmanship. With a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and based on a play by Miklós László, this production offers a delightful journey into the world of romance and unexpected connections.
"She Loves Me" is a heartwarming musical that tells the story of Amalia and Georg, two employees at a 1930s European perfumery who are constantly at odds with each other. Unbeknownst to them, they are also secret pen pals who have fallen in love through their heartfelt letters.
As the story unfolds, Amalia and Georg navigate the challenges of their workplace while unaware of their deep connection. Alongside their colleagues, including the charming womanizer Kodaly, the eager-to-please Sipos, and the vivacious Ilona, the characters find themselves entangled in a web of mistaken identities and romantic entanglements.
Through a series of comedic mishaps and misunderstandings, the truth behind Amalia and Georg's pen pal relationship is eventually revealed. As their love blossoms, they discover that true love often hides in unexpected places and that their initial animosity was merely a facade for their true feelings.
Filled with memorable songs, including the beloved "Vanilla Ice Cream" and "She Loves Me," the musical showcases the complexities of human relationships, the power of love, and the transformative nature of forgiveness. With its enchanting setting, endearing characters, and timeless themes, "She Loves Me" captures the essence of romance and leaves the audience with a warm and joyful heart.
Under the skillful guidance of director Peet Cocke, the cast brings the story to life with remarkable talent and infectious energy. From the moment the curtain rises, the chemistry between the characters is palpable, immersing the audience in their intertwined lives.
Leading the ensemble with grace and charisma, Sophia Alawi portrays the endearing Ilona, capturing her character's vulnerability and resilience. Riley McFarland's portrayal of Georg is equally commendable, his heartfelt performance capturing the essence of a lovestruck romantic. Together, Alawi and McFarland create a captivating and believable connection with their co-workers at Maraczek’s Perfumery, igniting the stage with their blossoming love stories.
The supporting cast shines brightly, each member leaving an indelible mark on the production. Nick Nakashima brings depth and warmth to the role of Sipos, while Jourdan Olivier-Verde's portrayal of the charismatic Headwaiter is brimming with charm and charisma. Marah Sotelo delivers a stellar performance as Amalia, effortlessly capturing the character's wit, charm, and longing for love.
The creative and production team's efforts are truly commendable, with Daniel Thomas leading the way as musical director, ensuring the melodies and harmonies soar with precision and emotion. Leslie Waggoner's choreography adds an extra layer of elegance and fluidity to the production, seamlessly blending with the narrative. The work of Adriana Gutierrez (Costume Designer), Kia-Hao Lo (Scenic Designer), and Brittany Mellerson (Lighting Design) beautifully create the atmosphere and visual tapestry of the show, transporting the audience into the world of the 1930s European perfumery.
Tanya Telson's stage management expertise keeps the production running smoothly, while Emma Gifford's assistant stage management brings precision and organization to the backstage chaos. Mary, God’s Humble Servant
Today's inspiration comes from:
The God of the How and When
by Kathie Lee Gifford & Rabbi Jason Sobel
Bible Verses
"My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. — Luke 1:46–49 NKJV
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage. — Philippians 2:5–6 NIV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. — 1 Peter 5:6–7 NIV
Devotional
RABBI JASON
God chose perhaps His most unlikely vessel to set into motion the salvation of mankind: a teenage girl named Mary. Mary thought she was waiting for a wedding to a carpenter named Joseph, but something came to her that was far different — an improbable event she never would have dreamed of. A holy interruption. Much about Mary and her relationship with God is revealed when we read about her response to the angel when she was told she would give birth to the promised Messiah (see Luke 1:26–38). Mary showed tremendous humility of heart — the same humble quality we find in Yeshua (see Philippians 2:6–11).
A characteristic of humility is receiving. Probably understanding some, though not all, of the misunderstanding and scorn that would surely come, Mary embraced God’s new vision for her life without complaining or sarcasm. First Peter 5:5 tells us that
God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. — NKJV
You want God’s grace? Become humble. Mary was humble in spirit.
Being willing to decrease so that others can increase is the essence of humility (see John 3:30). It’s important to note, however, that I’m not talking about self-abasing. A truly humble person is secure and confident in God’s love. They know who they are.
Genuine humility is not thinking less of ourselves. It’s thinking of ourselves less.
It also takes humility for us to be completely transparent before others, allowing them to speak into our lives, encourage us, sharpen us if needed, and help us in our own journeys. Notice that when the angel ended his time with Mary, he said,
Nothing will be impossible with God. — Luke 1:37 TLV
Genuine humility is not thinking less of ourselves. It’s thinking of ourselves less.
Mary needed to be transparent to receive that word and then live by it. She responded by humbly worshiping and magnifying the Lord (see verses 46–55).
Think of what obedience meant to this young girl. She needed to confront Joseph and risk a divorce. She had to face her neighbors, whose imaginations must have run wild. She had to confront her parents and Joseph’s parents. But through all this confrontation and gossip, she was able to cling to the angel’s promise to her and to Joseph’s loyalty to her after his own angelic visit (see Matthew 1:18–25).
I find it interesting that Mary obeyed without hesitation. Obedience was her delight. Looking back at the times God has called me to do something, I have to ask, Did I react like Mary?
Not all the time. There were moments of hesitation. I wonder what blessings from God I lost. Today, we often regard obedience as a weakness. Mary’s example should correct our thinking. In Scripture, we can almost see that His will became her will. She willingly yielded to what God wanted for her instead of fighting for her self-defined life direction.
As in Mary’s experience, faith and humility together will lead us to God’s favor. To walk in our divine assignments and sing our unique songs, we will need to seek God’s presence, understanding that He is the source of favor to open the doors that only He can open — doors that no man can shut. Humility is knowing that you are in God’s control and, when the situation calls for it, having the bold faith to do what God has asked you to do.
Respond
How can following Mary’s example of humility transform your relationship with God?
What has God asked you to do for Him? How have you responded in the past?
Where in your life do you need bold faith to do what God has asked you to do?"
Excerpted with permission from the 10-Day devotional from The God of the Way by Kathie Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel.

Nov. 20, 2022Difficult GraceNYT Critic's Pick
The cellist Seth Parker Woods presented an evening-long, multimedia program titled “Difficult Grace” Saturday evening at the 92nd Street Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall. It was the full staging’s world premiere, but, as Woods remarked, he had premiered a “nucleus version” in February 2020 in Seattle; the coronavirus lockdown gave him the opportunity to rework his concept into its current form.
Woods was already a cellist of prodigious technical gifts and sharp intellect. This program has stretched him even further into performing as a spoken word artist and singer as well as instrumentalist.
Aided by the choreographer and dancer Roderick George — a childhood friend from Houston — “Difficult Grace” was a feast for the ears, eyes and mind.
In one portion of Freida Abtan’s “My Heart Is a River,” the audience sees a prerecorded video projection of two dancers as Woods plays live in front of the screen. The dancing figures straddle a cello that they are reimagining as a boat. The performer in front — actually Woods himself, with dancer Tamzin O’Garro behind — is wielding the cello bow as an oar. It’s a marvelously apt metaphor: Woods is an artist rooted in classical music, but whose cello is a vehicle that takes him, and his concertgoers, on wide-ranging journeys.
The program included works by a large roster of composers, many of whom used electronic sound design as well as live acoustic cello: Fredrick Gifford, Monty Adkins, Nathalie Joachim, Abtan, Ted Hearne, Devonté Hynes and Pierre Alexandre Tremblay. (In addition to Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, who died in 2004.)
Gifford’s piece “Difficult Grace,” which lent its name to the entire program, included projected artwork by Barbara Earl Thomas and was inspired by Dudley Randall’s poetry. Regrettably, it was difficult to discern from the auditorium seats much of what Woods was saying during long spoken-word stretches. (Projected supertitles would be a welcome addition.) The same was true during Hearne’s work with an unprintable title, with texts by the poet Kemi Alabi. Within the most riveting section of Hearne’s piece, Woods sang and played R&B-flavored harmonies atop hip hop-inspired electronic beats.
Tumblr media
Each composer who used prerecorded cello and electronic sound design, sometimes with on-the-spot manipulations, did so to very different aesthetic ends. Woods performed two movements from Abtan’s piece (“Opening Out” and “Seeping In”), in which the electronics and the live cello swirled around each other in haunting, echoing duets. Adkins’s gentle, cinematographic “Winter Tendrils,’‘ accompanied by an equally warmhearted film by Zoë McLean, used electronics almost like an invisible string orchestra, framing Woods’s cello in lush, glowing harmonies.
The most overtly narrative work was Nathalie Joachim’s “The Race: 1915,” which used projected images from the artist Jacob Lawrence’s “Migration Series” and texts taken from The Chicago Defender, the Black newspaper that was founded in 1905 and urged Black Americans to move northward in what became the Great Migration. Joachim’s music alternated between busy, cyclical motion and periods of meditative, slow arcs.
The most traditionally “classical” piece during the evening was a technically demanding cello sonata written by Devonté Hynes, whom certain music-loving New Yorkers may recall from his recent stint opening for Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden.
The other fully acoustic work was the third movement from Perkinson’s “Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite for Solo Cello,” entitled “Calvary Ostinato.” Perkinson’s music evoked centuries of Black American music, between lavish pizzicato sections which called to mind the connections between the American banjo and West African plucked string instruments and bluesy slides from note to note.
The evening ended with a powerful duet between Woods and George dancing live onstage in Tremblay’s “asinglewordisnotenough 3 [invariant].” It’s a piece that crackles with nervous, coiled energy. Woods often attacked his strings with furious intensity, while George’s dancing combined solid muscularity and sinuous movements. Somehow, all of these emotional currents found a home inside Tremblay’s score.
Difficult Grace
Performed on Saturday at Kaufmann Concert Hall, Manhattan.
