Harlots is fairly good this year of showing the special limits to men of colour’s agency under early imperial capitalism. every man of color on this show has been used and propped up in a role by a white woman. was Will that wrong when he said Margaret would never treat him like his if he were white? I don’t think Margaret is a racist, but she did take his loyalty for granted and imo wasn’t entertaining as much of his angst, his interior life and personal guilt. i also think it’s interesting to compare the treatment of Rasselas and Noah in 2x05. They’re both men of color “playing” parts in the vestal virgin festival on behalf of white women, albeit on different planes of ethical intent.

others smart than me have talked about Noah there, and how Lydia’s flags were raised because she holds the popular belief that only upperclass white men have the “right” to rape white women. i know Charlotte and Mag’s are short-staffed on men to play along, but they were putting Noah in a very dangerous situation as a black man impersonating his way into a rich white circle to feign participation in white girl’s rape. Even if the façade was made in the exchange of money, I don’t think i can express how that’s a REALLY dangerous situation for him be cast in on white people’s behalf.

Rasselas’ racial difference was marked upon a few times, mostly as the subject of orientalist fetishization by white women. One of Margaret’s girl’s referred to him as the handsome “Eastern” looking one, folding his “Oriental” status into the physical appeal of him as a sex object. On the other but connected side of this spectrum, we have Lydia casting him as the Eunuch--completely desexualising him into a sexually nonthreatening, submissive stereotype into these white men’s fantasies that amalgamate Asian, Roman, and Greek rituals together around the violation of a white body. I think these sexual (de)charged logics are also located in that interesting beat where Lydia kind of uses Ras as a surrogate Charlie, allowing him to lean on her and be comforted by her. She doesn’t give a shit about his welfare or grief about his partner. She’s infantalizing and desexualising him to fulfill her emotional needs, just like she will in the ceremony to fulfill her financial ones.

Not all of this is executed as self-awarely as I’d like--I’m certain they were thinking about how these men’s agencies are at the will of white women, but i dont think it’s treated as “text” enough for them to be thinking about it. the show, too, showcases violence and objectification against colonized male bodies to fulfill the narrative needs of white female characters.
