Arthur knew her.

He did not know from where nor when, but the moment their eyes met, crystal iris drowning in his steel-blue ones, he had been convinced of it. When he opened the door at midnight and found himself face to face with the most otherworldly beautiful young woman he had ever seen Arthur’s words choked in his throat. Slightly embarrassed by how late it was, the angel handed him the renting advertisement she had printed and offered him a beaming smile that showcased four pearly white and sharp fangs. Such an odd complexion was soon to be forgotten for the gangster found himself enthralled by the way her plump and glossy lips reflected the corridor’s light as if her flesh had been engraved with diamond dust.

That was how he, a troubled veteran and an assassin, became roommates with her, an aerial performer who spent years in a mental hospital for unknown reasons. It didn’t take long for Arthur to fall in love. And to fall hard. Since she had entered his life, there were things that instantly soothed his urge to take drugs or his overwhelming violence. Like watching her stretch in the living room, her face rosy and pouting because of the pinching sensation in her hamstrings. When she let out small whimpers and long sighs, he would just obliterate everything else. Often she even asked him for help: “Arthur, can you please push my foot so that it touches my head?” "Can you keep my legs open for my splits?" Or “Can you seize my hips while I invert for my Aisha trick?” And he obeyed, craving some skin-to-skin contact with her. He had lost count of how many times they ended up laughing because she had slipped from the pole and they fell together on the living room’s wooden floor. For sure, she brought joy into his life. Peace into his mind. And soon, warmth into his bed. Her presence beside him was not only required, but it was also a necessary need for him to function properly.

Their life together was filled with little rituals and demonstrations of affection such as taking baths and showers together or establishing movie nights — even if, most of the time, they stopped paying attention to it at some point to sink into each other.

But her favorite one was when she exhausted herself at the pole studio late at night and he brought pizza from her favorite local restaurant. Arthur sat on the floor and watched his angel gracefully spinning on the pole, dressed in revealing exotic dancing gear and Pleaser platform boots. And when her training was over, she sat with him, snuggled in his loving arms, and shared the pizza together.

“Arthur. Do you want the last slice?” She asked, her French accent melting on her tongue. The way she pronounced his name made his legs weak — and it changed so much from the English way that he sometimes didn’t realize she called him.

“Ye can take it angel,” He grinned, his gravel voice cooing. Pressing a kiss on her temple, his mouth trailed down her porcelain skin until it reached her ear, “But I crave s’mthing sweet so I’ll take a slice of you for dessert, hm.”

She laughed and each time she did, he found gold in her voice and heaven in her eyes.

Paradise comes crashing down when he confronts her with the truth.

“How could you do this to me, to us?” He does not shout, instead he drinks and looks at her as he tossed the photographs of her and Heaven across the desk.

And because she cannot fucking explain why she thought they could have it all, that she could love two people when one refuses to even think love can be shared, Eva says nothing.

How can she tell him that she loves him, that she loves her and that despite what it looks like, Tommy is the only person she could ever wish to be married to?

Eva loves Heaven, but never the way she loves Tommy.

Tommy is the only man she’s ever wanted, the one who makes her feel understood and loved and safe. The father of her children, her partner in life and business and everything in between.

And now she had lost him.

She knows she has and that hurts more than losing Heaven.

Because if she were given a choice, it would always be Tommy.

Just as she knows Heaven would choose Arthur, and Eva would understand.

Her marriage dies tonight as she stands there in white like a bride.

“I’m sorry, Tom, I never wanted to hurt you.”

Days turn to weeks and weeks turn to months.

Arthur and Heaven have left their lives, only the brothers stay connected. Arthur forgave Heaven, whether because he doesn’t know how long it went or because he’s too under her spell, Eva doesn’t know.

First, he stops letting her in, then spends more time at work to avoid her, and last, he gives into his anger and fucks another woman.

“How does it feel, sweetheart? How does it feel to be paid with the same coin?” he asks, drunk, smelling of his secretary and touching Eva with all the want they still have for each other.

And she says nothing, because she knows she deserves the pain and humiliation from being betrayed just as she betrayed him.

He moves to a different room after, the one connected to hers so that the children don’t realize they do not sleep in the same bed.

Not that it gets past them, he is cold and distant now, even to Charlie and Diane who do not understand what’s going on.

She wants to leave, to stop hurting themselves and heal away from each other, but once you marry a Shelby your only choice is to die a Shelby.

Well, she was a Riley and a Smith before him, her husband is powerful, but so is she.

It doesn’t take much to get a lawyer and the necessary things to disappear out of his life.

And yet, Eva lets herself get caught.

Because deep in her heart, she burns to be with him still. The witch wants to see what remains in the ashes of paradise before she leaves it all behind.

“You won’t leave, just as I won’t leave either. No one else loves you like I do, and you won’t love anyone else like you love me.”

This he says burning the papers she’s gotten her cousins to give her.

This he says telling her that he’s fucked Lizzie and Jessie Eden and even May and that when he came, it was Eva’s name he said all those times.

“We are a match made in hell, sweetheart.

I can’t get you out of my fucking heart, and I don’t want to.”

That night they fuck, rough and angry and a strangely shameful after when he leaves her bed and stumbles into his.

That night Gabriel is conceived and for a moment Eva has hope.

Sure, it is too soon after Diane, but this baby could be what breathes life into what was once paradise.

When she tells him, she stands there in the same office where six months ago it all came crashing down.

Things do not return to the way they were before, but he is back beside her in bed, where they know someone who understands and loves them is beside them. He comes home more often, dismissed Lizzie and sent her out of her sight, and, for a moment, it looks like things will be better.

They campaign together, the perfect man with the perfect family.

Socialists to their core, hard working and just interesting enough to have you vote for him.

“Give me your hand,” she says when she goes in unannounced to his office in Digbeth for a visit.

He is still cool, but he has thawed enough to fan the flames of her hope. He won’t trust her again despite her giving him no reason to think there will be an encore of what happened between her and Heaven.

She deserves that, she knows she does and yet, she longs for what she had and threw away to chase after that spark she felt with Heaven.

She is Eve looking mournfully at all she cost them when God banished them from Eden.

She is Eve cursed to be mad in love with a man who’s only sin was loving her.

Eva is roughly five months pregnant when things finally seem to be healing between them.

They have not talked about it, except that she made a mistake that she will spend the rest of her life paying for because she doesn’t want to lose him.

His hand is warm under hers, the coldness of his rings feeling foreign to her touch even though she’s held and kissed his hand for six years now.

And yet, all that strangeness that has crept in between them melts away when they feel the baby kick underneath their hands.

“Will you ever forgive me?” Eva asks when he gives her a real smile, one that is warmer than any gesture thus far.

“I don’t know.”

Fun question: what topics do you think Scarlet, Heaven, Polly, and Eva would discuss if they went for Afternoon Tea together.

That's an excellent query, darling! I have to say that I love the idea of these ladies spending time together without husbands or children to interrupt them. I imagine no topic of conversation is off limits and they pour whisky or gin as often as tea. When visiting Arrow House, they might use a tea set which looks like this, something Eva would surely approve of. I'll share a few snippets of dialogue that came to me as I imagined their gatherings. I won't tell you who said what so you might have the pleasure of guessing. @evita-shelby, @call-sign-shark I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. Anything to add to this little party?

Hi Shark. I was wondering if I could be cheeky and request something from you. I was wondering if you could release a headcanon for Heaven with a list of fun facts about her (i.e. fave food, color, animal, vacation spot, book, song, drink...if she went to university what d'you think she'd study that kind of thing). She's just so interesting that I'd like to know more about her. Also, I read a fic she was mentioned in the other day and I thought you'd be interested. It was just a mention but I thought it was cool. Also, I can't wait for The woods whisper part 2. I'm on edge.

𝒫𝑒𝒶𝓀𝓎 𝐵𝓁𝒾𝓃𝒹𝑒𝓇𝓈

♢ Her favorite animals are hyenas. She dreams about owning one?? She’s weird asf I know.

♢ I personally imagine her voice like the singer of Sohodolls (by the way, this song from the group is her main theme song)

♢ Surprisingly enough her favorite color is not white, but red and gold.

♢ She's multilingual and speaks: French, Russian, German, and English all fluently.

♢ She's 25 at the beginning of HYE, even if throughout her life people struggle to give her an age since she has this very woman-child aspect.

♢ Her style is quite modern for the era. When she doesn’t wear elegant and revealing dresses with gold jewels, capes or fur coats, she loves stealing one of Arthur’s shirts and tuck it in her skirt. Similarly, he had to buy a second coat ‘cause she had stolen his. Most of the time she either dresses like a goddess or a forest nymph.

♢ She loves fun fairs and circuses! When they started flirting together and meeting at church every night, Arthur sometimes brought her candied apples.

♢ She might be an enchanting singer and she might love music but she's awful at playing an instrument. She tried piano, guitar, harp, and violin but she was terrible at all of them.

♢ She has empathy issues she hides quite well. Now, I’m not saying she has 0 Empathy but she lacks of it most of the time except with Arthur or on a few occasions. It leads her to be cold and sardonic with people outside of her private circle when she doesn’t “mask”.

♢ Did someone said “lemon pie”? She’d kill for lemon pies. It’s her favorite dessert of all time.

♢ Her Birthday is the 22 January.

♢ She's fond of myths, legends, and fairy tales. If she had to pick one tale and one myth she would go for the Red Little Riding Hood and the Beast of Gevaudan. But her favorite story is Alice’s Adventures.

♢ She's a "mama bear", which means she doesn't lose her temper easily despite being gifted with an ability for extreme violence but touch her husband, kids or family and she'll go f e r a l.

♢ She talked several times with Linda at church, unknowing Heaven was already fucking her husband (and she enjoyed it). I know, that's a dick move.

♢ She's a huge fan of horror movies and games (especially FNAF), with a fascination for cannibalism. With that being said, she organizes the best girl nights ever, especially during Halloween.

The Woods Whisper — excerpt

“It’s freezing!” You hissed, not even noticing the suffocating steam that accumulated in the shower nor how reddened your husband skin was at the places were the burning water rained down. The feeling of it on his freshest wounds made him grit his teeth but the pain didn’t kept him from staying in the shower with you.

“It’s burning hot, love.” Arthur replied, his gravelly voice soft but filled with undeniable concern at your inability to properly feel the temperature. Noticing that you were quite literally shivering despite the hot water pouring on the two of your, the gangster’s slim arms wrapped you and pulled you closer to interlock your bodies. Each of your curves and shapes perfectly melted in each other, like the pieces of a same jigsaw. Only when you crashed against him you let out a sigh of relief, shivers stopping all of sudden, and Arthur’s natural warmth spreading under your skin and crawling to your icy heart.

You hugged him back softly. Then tighter. More more, I need more of him. Then so hard that your nails broke the skin of his back, scratching him until his crimson blood stain your growing claws. A hoarse whimper escaped from his trembling lips, halfway between pleasure and pain. Lately, your relationship was filled with pain. So much pain. So much blood. You hurt him with teeth and claws, you ate his very flesh, but to Arthur and his mind, which was sinking as deep as yours, it felt like true love.

I must say that I died a little imagining Ellie obliterating everything around her and going feral whenever Tommy speaks in Romani. And what got me cackling even more is that Heaven is more or less the same. Hearing Arthur speaks Romani gets her WEAK.

At the beginning of their relationship Arthur never told her about it, fearing her reaction to him being a Romani so she discovered it completely by chance. Tommy was talking shit about her to his brother right in front of her when Arthur screamed at him using the same language. And god, when I tell you it did things to her. She had been so surprised by hearing him talking another language that she had remained silent the entire way home… Only to push Arthur on the couch as soon as the door closed *cough cough*.

On a less smutty note, Heaven is fascinated by foreign languages and is herself multilingual, which leads us to one of their favorite couple activities after dinner: Arthur teaches Romani to his wife, and she tries to teach French to him. It’s no surprise that Mr. Arthur Shelby Jr had learnt cuss words far quicker than the rest of the French lexicon though, except for the sentence “Je t’aime” and “Voulez vous coucher avec moi?”.

So yeah, little Hev shakes hands with Ellie on this. Pretty sure the girls talks about it a loooot while giggling and sipping tea. “I swear when Tommy whispers things to me in Romani… // oh mon Dieu don’t get me started on this gurrrll.”
