As I'm sure I've mentioned here, the Lee Morgan Complete Live At The Lighthouse set was one of my favorite archival digs released in 2021. Hermosa Beach bliss! Of course, many other live albums were taped at the Lighthouse — including a killer Joe Henderson Quintet double LP. Would I complain if that record got the same lavish treatment as Lee Morgan? I would not! But who knows what kinds of tapes still exist ... In the meantime, let's check out a very nice recording of the Henderson Quintet up the coast, just a few weeks before they hit the Lighthouse. Such a great band — Woody Shaw on trumpet and flugelhorn, George Cables on electric piano, Ron McClure on acoustic bass, and Lenny White on drums. And of course, Joe himself bringing the heat ...

Soon after the pandemic hit and I stopped working (St Pats) my roommate, Alex Gang, pointed out that I wasn’t getting any exercise. (At Doyles I clocked in between 3-5 miles a night walking all over the joint.) Thus began, at Alex’s urging, The Walkabouts. The ‘constitutionals’. I loved it. The slowing down pace, the places I’d hurtle past in a car. On my own it could sometimes feel like obligatory homework, but once outside, I was happy to be there. Solo was cool but I realized that if I could ask a friend of mine to walk with me, conversation would quicken the time. Since I’ve not been to the Behan or was yet to land a new job, my social life was void. But on these walks my friend(s) and I would have conversations that lasted a lot longer than they might have at a bar or glancing off co-workers in a ping pong rush. An hour, give or take, was a super good time for all those reasons. Some friends I hadn’t seen for nearly 20 years showed up. Dave Richmond (long ago ally at those Jacques Cabaret clubhouse nights) brought a bag of ‘magic rocks’ which I’d hand out (until I ran outa them) to whomever was with me. Ever the annoying ‘Dad’ Documentarian, I took evidence selfies so I could post em up on facebook. Then #thenickelanddimeband wound up back in the studio to work on a 7 song ep. ‘Who Would Ya Be Without Yr Friends?’ was one of the tunes. Back in 2019 during my surgery convalescence I asked Shamus Moynihan how I could thank everyone who chipped in on a GoFundMe site for the weeks I was outa work. ‘Write a song,’ he said. This is that song, only the 2nd blues song I’ve revere written, and, I suspect, with the exact same changes.

Note: God knows I’m lucky to have as many friends in my life as I do. Aren’t we all? But for this video I stuck with my MO of only including people who walked the walk or whom I ran into along the way. The song is also for those who live too far away or who for some reason I never asked to join up with me. All apologies on that.

The Hambletonian is held annually for three-year-old trotting Standardbreds. It is the most coveted North American race for trotters; among races for pacers, only the Little Brown Jug is as prestigious. The Hambletonian is the first, and most prestigious, event in the United States Trotting Triple Crown races. The Hambletonian is currently run at Meadowlands Racetrack in August.

Hambletonian 10, or Rysdyk's Hambletonian, (May 5, 1849-1876) was an American trotter and sire who profoundly influenced the sport of harness racing. The stallion was born in Sugar Loaf, New York, on 5 May 1849. Hambletonian has been inducted into the Immortals category of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame.

Origin and Early Years

Hambletonian 10 bred by Jonas Seely, Jr. on his farm at Sugar Loaf in Orange County, New York. He was sired by Abdallah who was a grandson of the hugely influential Thoroughbred sire, Messenger. Abdallah was ugly in body and temperament, so much so that he was sold to a fish peddlar for $5. Hambletonian's dam was known as the Charles Kent Mare or the 'Kent Mare.' Hambletonian was thrice inbred to Messenger, considered a foundation sire of Standardbreds.

Seeley's hired hand, William Rysdyk, cared for the mare and foal. Rysdyk became so attached to the pair and was so convinced that the foal would someday be great that he asked to purchase them. Seeley finally agreed, and for $125 William Rysdyk took his prize possessions home.

Hambletonian had an unusual build, being low at the withers (15.1 ¼ hh) but high at the croup (15.3 ¼). This length of hind leg did, however, provide a great deal of thrust with each stride, and he passed this on to all his get.

Career

Hambletonian 10, as he was registered, made his first public appearance at the age of six months at the nearby Orange County Fair in Goshen. He caused quite a sensation and horsemen started referring to him as 'Rysdyk's Abdallah colt.' This colt began his stud career at age two when Rysdyk allowed him to cover four mares. Meanwhile another son of Abdallah, Abdallah Chief, owned by Seeley C. Roe, was looming as a competitor for the local stallion honors. Roe had nothing but contempt for Hambletonian, and claimed he'd never be a trotter, only a show horse. This issue was settled in 1852 at Long Island's Union Course. Hambletonian and Abdallah Chief were hitched to skeleton wagons with their owners driving. Three minutes and three seconds after the start, Hambletonian crossed the finish line ahead of his rival. Roe still wasn't satisfied and insisted on another race. A time trial was held. Abdallah Chief went the mile in 2:55 1/2. Then Roe watched Hambletonian, in what would be the only time trial of his career, trot the mile in 2:48 1/2. Rysdyk then placed Hambletonian at stud in Chester and bred him to local mares for a fee upwards of $500. The horse's reputation quickly grew as a sire of speed, and Rysdyk made a modest fortune from the horse's services. In his years at stud, 1,331 foals were sired. From four of Hambletonian's sons (George Wilkes, Dictator, Happy Medium, and Electioneer), the lineage of virtually all American Standardbred horses can be traced.

Death

At age 27 on March 27, 1876, Hambletonian died. Both he and his owner, who had died in 1870, were buried in Chester, N.Y. Seventeen years after Hambletonian's death a granite monument, the gift of many people who had fond memories of the horse, was placed over his grave on Hambletonian Avenue.

Legacy

In 24 seasons at stud, between 1851 and 1875, Hambletonian produced about 1,335 foals. Through four Hambletonian sons, 99 percent of all of the harness racing horses in North America today trace their bloodline to him.

In the 1860s, one of his sons, Dexter, trotted the mile in 2:17.25-a record. Dexter was immediately bought for $25,000 by a Robert Bonner for his own private driving pleasure. A rigidly moral man, Bonner did not approve of racing or betting, so no one will ever know if Dexter could have trotted even faster. But ever since, no horse lacking lines to Hambletonian in their pedigree has ever done better.

The Hambletonian Stakes race, the most prestigious harness race for trotters in North America, is named in honor of Hambletonian 10.

Hambletonian Horse Race 2020

The Hambletonian first took place at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY in 1926. The race switched from Syracuse to Lexington, KY for the 1927 and 1929 races, however, because of rainouts. Starting in 1930, Good Time Park in Goshen, NY hosted the race until 1956 with the exception of 1943. That year, The Hambletonian was raced at Empire City Race Track, which became Yonkers Raceway in 1950, because of wartime gas rationing. The Du Quoin State Fair in Du Quoin, IL gained the rights to host the race in 1957 and held on to it until 1980. Since 1981, the race has been at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ

The Simpsons has a hidden movie starring Rainier Wolfcastle as McBain, and while the scenes are scattered through three seasons, they form a coherent storyline. Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons began as a series of animated shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, and after three seasons it was developed into a half-hour prime time show, making its official debut on Fox in 1989. The Simpsons is now one of the most popular animated shows and has entertained generations for years, becoming the longest-running American sitcom and expanding to other media as well, most notably film and comic books.

The Simpsons follows the daily lives of the title family and their closest friends and some enemies in the fictional town of Springfield. Although the Simpsons are a one-of-a-kind family, the town is full of colorful residents with their own quirks and problems, going from cold-hearted billionaires like Mr. Burns to homeless people like the Crazy Cat Lady and even a couple of celebrities – local celebrities, that is. The most famous one is, without a doubt, Troy McClure (Phil Hartman), who starred in various movies with strange titles, but the character was retired after Hartman’s death. However, Springfield has another celebrity in Rainier Wolfcastle (Harry Shearer), an Austrian actor living and working in Springfield.

Wolfcastle has appeared in various movies within The Simpsons, but his most notable roles are those of Radioactive Man (though that project didn’t go well) and McBain, an action movie hero inspired by real-life action stars Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. McBain is the star of a film series, and The Simpsons actually told a full storyline through different clips that appeared sporadically in seasons two to four, forming a “hidden movie” within the show – and here’s every scene and the story told through them.

Season 2’s episode “The Way We Was” tells the story of how Homer and Marge met in high school, but it made room for a McBain clip that marks the beginning of the movie. In it, McBain, a former policeman, finds evidence that Senator Mendoza is running a drug cartel and confronts his boss about it, but gets kicked out of the squad. McBain punches the captain out of the window in retaliation, and that’s the end of the clip.

The next clip is also in season 2, this time in the episode “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”, where Homer’s half-brother, Herb, was introduced. The McBain clip shown in this episode sees McBain and his best friend and partner Scoey tracking down evidence on their own as McBain was kicked out of the squad. Sadly, Scoey is gunned down by an assassin hired by Mendoza, who was looking to kill McBain but Scoey took the bullets. To make it even sadder, Scoey had just explained he was two days away from retirement, his daughter was going to graduate from college, and after finishing with Mendoza, he and his wife were going to sail around the world. McBain fails to stop the assassin, and as Scoey dies in his arms, he becomes more determined to take Mendoza down.

Another clip can be found later on in season 2, in the episode “The War of the Simpsons”, where Marge signs her and Homer for a marriage retreat. The McBain clip continues his quest to avenge Scoey, for which he decides that his regulated gun is too small, so he decides to use a bigger one. As he just got his job back, the captain reprimands him about the size of the new gun, but McBain doesn’t care and continues with his plan, though not before shooting and blowing away the Police Manual that stated the gun was too big.

Jumping to season 3, the continuation of the McBain movie can be found in the episode “Saturdays of Thunder”, where Bart gets involved in competitive soapbox racing. The clip in this episode sees McBain ambushing Mendoza during a meeting about his newest drug, where he kills everyone except Mendoza, who gets away by feeding him a drugged salmon puff.

The final part of the McBain movie is in season 4’s episode “Last Exit to Springfield”, where Homer takes the place of the leader of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant’s union.
