Rue picked a daisy. Lost in her thoughts she missed what Runty had said and looked over with a short, “Huh?”
“Are you okay?” Runty asked again, “You haven’t really been paying attention at all today…” she was on the path her chair could roll through, watching Rue gather daisies. The human watching them a couple yards back.
She hesitated. That image flashing in her mind again of the mass of muscle being brought out of the tank and cut upon to that tiny face, “I… Has… Has no one told you what happened last night?”
Runty frowns a bit confused, “I was in the labs last night. They’re looking at why my hips hurt so much. I’m hoping it’ll get me a better coushion… so no, I don’t know…”
“…” Rue looked away to the flowers in her hands, “You uh… you’re an aunt. Maybe… or at least you were for a bit.”
The blue mewtwo blinked at her. She blinked again and rubbed her eye divot a bit as it ached again…
“Runty?” She asked the other cautiously, “I-I’m sorry I shouldn’t have gone snooping.”
She shook her head, “Stop. Stop… it… It’s okay. I just…” she looked up from the rubbing to reveal she wasn’t just the ache it was to wipe tears, “Is he still okay? Did he make it?“
“Oh, oh yes One is okay. They were already talking about him stable before I went back to the room,” Rue assured her.
Runty nodded, “…so… my big brother had a baby? How?”
“…they had to cut it out…” Rue shivered at the memory.
“No, no I mean how could that even be possible? We’ve always been called infurtile. Cause mom is, cause we were cloned from parts of her and she is…”
“Oh… I had no idea…” Rue didn’t know what to say other than that before looking at Runty surprised as the crying mewtwo started to laugh.
Runty stopped even wiping her eye, “A baby. My brother had a baby… it wasn’t a terrifying tumor it was just a little baby… C-can you believe I wished it would go away? I wonder if he did the same… Sage always would say she could talk to him. I never could so I haven’t in decades…”
Rue stepped over to kneel down and put a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t dare say something just yet.
“E-even if it didn’t make it… even if it was too weak. I-I can’t believe it. He had a baby. But there hasn’t been flowers, Mom said they only can grow when a mew wanted a baby and could have one… but, they haven’t been around… but there had to be one right?” She sniffed and smiled as it was dawning on her through the overflowing emotions, “I think Sage brought him his flower…”
Rue thought a moment, “… let’s go visit him…”
Runty wiped her eyes and nodded, “Y-yeah. Okay… bring the daisies please?”
Rue nodded and they started back for the building…

The room was mostly empty as they had managed to time it for the lunch break. Only Tyler was there talking to the mew on the screen but paid them no mind.
Runty stopped in the doorway, her eyes fixated on the loud black stitches on the soft green and how odd the yellow tint was to the liquids of the tank, “…He’s okay… but where…?”
Rue spotted it first and pointed out the counter, an egg incubator was humming away. A tiny green ball was inside.
Runty hesitated looking over but with a supportive hand on her shoulder she dared to get her chair closer…
The usual energy that’d suspend an egg so it wouldn’t get bumped had the tiny thing floating a few inches from the bottom. The tank as a whole swallowed it just how large the tank was and how small it was.
Runty reached up a hand to touch the glass, closing her eye and looking at it…. Just the smallest winking of that white outline and a soft shifting color inside it… it was so weak. But it was there, “Hey little nibbling… I-it’s your aunt…”
Rue watched a moment before something came to mind and she slipped out while Runty was enamored with the baby…
She looked at the beanbag chair and picked up the simple teddy ursa toy. It had helped her that first night and been such a nice soft thing to hug besides the fuzzy pillow she loved. One last tight hug. She was sure Annie wouldn’t mind but even if she did there was a little baby that was no bigger than her thumb bulb that needed a friend even more.
“Hey Runty, can I scoot by?”
The little mewtwo looked up and smiled before wiping her eye again, “It’s such a fighter. Every time the colors try to get really small they push them right back… it’s… it’s really amazing… scared me…” she pulled her chair back a bit, “Is that a toy from Annie’s room?”
“Yeah, I think they need the company from it more right now,” Rue offered, she looked at the teeny thing. She could see what Runty mentioned, it matched with its struggle to figure out breathing. It really was way too tiny, but it was figuring it out. She had hope they would figure it out completely, “Here you go little one. It helped me sleep, now it can help you….”
Runty took Rue’s hand, “they’ll have good dreams now no matter what…”
Rue smiled and watched the baby a little while before tugging Runty’s hand and then going to put the daisies beside One.
Tyler looked over as he noticed his break was over, “Oh! Perfect I was supposed to get you Rue. You’ve got to go through one last test before I walk you to the portal department. Say goodbye to our Rue,” he smiled with his metal filled teeth.
“What? Really?” Rue looked to Runty worried, “…Are you going to be okay?…”
Runty seemed to have shrank in her chair, her hand squeezed Rue’s, “y-yeah… I will be…. I-I’ll miss you though….” Her voice was small and uncertain.
Rue’s voice caught in her throat, “I don’t want to leave…”
“I’ll be okay… I was glad to meet you,” she forced a smile for her friend, “We should meet again sometime…”
Rue looked down. Silent a moment before Runty let go of her hand. She looked to the small mewtwo. The lump now stopping words.
She all but just fell down into a hug. Squeezing Runty. Only one short whine getting out.
Tyler scratched his head feeling bad but, “Come on, we shouldn’t be late okay?”
Rue stood up and rubbed her red eyes, “…o-okay…” she squeaked out. Looking back at Runty before reluctantly following Tyler. The last thing she made sure to look at was the tank, that bear set beside it with that teeny baby inside. Hopefully it would make it… it was struggling, but it was a fighter. Surely it would make it…
