@shishikusas Hopefully it’s okay that I’m tagging you! I just thought maybe you’d be interested in this.

Okay, so.

I’ve always been curious about the [REDACTED] parts in God of Marie, because after all these years, to my knowledge, nobody has managed to decipher what exactly is being said in those two lines. And plus, it’s very unlike Masa to censor himself; he usually doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the content of his songs.

So I set off on a journey to try and figure out what those two lines are. The details of what I found out are under the cut:

I tried listening to those two particular lines slowed down to try & understand them, but it quickly became clear that wasn’t going to work. But fortunately, I then found someone named IchigoMinako who had made a UST of God of Marie (download link in the description). In that UST, IchigoMinako had managed to transcribe what are, from as best as I can judge, the actual lyrics being sung in the redacted parts.

Here they are, written in romaji & broken up as they were in the UST (more on that later):

(Gumi’s line @ 1:39) i(i) shi zu bu ra me ni wa bu ri sha su ku ka ta

(Miku’s line @ 2:56) au do ro(o) wa shi su ta(a) tan ko i tsu

I also took a stab at translating these, but, sadly, I was almost completely unsuccessful. I was able to venture a guess at a few of the words used, but that’s about it:

Gumi’s line-

I’m not sure if the i sound is lengthened just to fit the beat of the song or if it’s actually the word ii. I’m guessing it’s the latter, though, which means good.

Shizu might be a prefix meaning quiet/calm/still

Bura could possibly be bra

Miku’s line-

Doro could mean dirt/mud or be an abbreviation of dorobou, which means thief/burglar

Shisuta is almost definitely sister

Koitsu is a derogatory third person pronoun

One of the reasons for my struggles in translating is that when Japanese lyrics are written in romaji, it is difficult to differentiate between は used as a particle and the character わ, which are both pronounced wa. Thus, the two uses of wa in the lyrics are ambiguous, at least to me.

Another issue was whether some characters are lengthened to fit the lyrics or because that’s actually how they are in the original word. I don’t believe this is too big of a problem--taa and doroo are probably just put into UTAU like that to fit the melody--but the i sound is actually an issue. As I said above, this is because ii is a word in and of itself that means good. I believe it to be ii, but again, that’s somewhat ambiguous.

Of course, I would definitely say the biggest problem is my own inexperience with Japanese. Masa’s songs are hard to translate, as he uses complicated language and nonstandard grammar. It’s highly probable that a native Japanese speaker — or at least, someone with more experience than my 4.5 years of study — would be able to easily translate these. I don’t claim to be a translation expert by any means.

Which is why I’m posting about this! Perhaps one of you Masa Works Design fans knows more about what these lines might mean. But, at the very least, I hope I was able to shed a little more light on one of the prevailing mysteries of Masa’s songs. Hopefully someday we’ll get to know what’s actually being sung there!
